The Pokémon Company has confirmed the release date for the upcoming New Pokémon Snap. Budding photographers don't have too long to wait, as it'll be available from 30th April.
A brand new trailer has arrived to give us the good news, showing off some glorious, never-before-seen footage of the game. This time around, the adventure takes place in a region called Lental, and it all looks very lovely indeed.
Get ready for New Pokémon Snap, an all-new adventure for Nintendo Switch inspired by the classic Nintendo 64 game Pokémon Snap. Explore beaches, jungles, deserts, and more as you photograph over 200 Pokémon and investigate the mysterious Illumina phenomenon in New Pokémon Snap.
Wild Pokémon are all around and have adapted to thrive in all the various natural expanses of the Lental region. They may be seen living in groups patrolling their territory, wandering serenely on their own or even playing with other Pokémon species. With a careful eye and a photographer’s keen sense of adventure, you’ll be able to spot Pokémon lurking in all sorts of places, including secluded hideaways … and sometimes swooping down suddenly from the sky!
Players will be able to interact with Pokémon by throwing a Fluffruit, a tasty fruit found across the region, to catch their attention or watch them eat. You can even use this fruit to help draw out Pokémon into a variety of situations to see how they react. These serendipitous opportunities present a special challenge, and catching them with your camera at the perfect moment may gain you higher scores.

That moment when a spin-off game looks so much better and has much more personality than the main games
Oh yeah, and Nintendo is eff-ing random with their announcements. I guess that means general Nintendo Direct are officially deconfirmed for 2021
GotY. Done. Cheers 👍
So much better ? Because tiny space, more less pokemon and different company. Please think before comment
I absolutely forgot this was a thing. This looks far more interesting than the main games.
@JokerCK SwSh also has much tiny space outside of the Wild Areas and also not many pokemon on screen since they only spawn when you are close to them. And how is "different company" a legit argument, you are acting like GameFreak is a small indie-developer.
Please think before comment
That's earlier than I thought.
Looks incredible, day one purchase for me.
No sure why this exists. We have seen so many great camera modes integrated into main line games.
A main line Pokémon game with the Pokémon living in their natural habitat (feeding, playing, fighting) would allow the player to break away from the main story and capture the Pokémon with their camera. Plus you could have enjoyable side quests.
I wish Nintendo had full control of Pokémon. The Pokémon company seem stuck
@JokerCK Tiny? There have been at least as many environments as Sword/Shield shown off, most of which are bigger than the majority of areas in SS.
I can't wait to capture Jynx in her natural habitat: trashy music video sets.
@mariomaster96 Pokemon games usually get their own direct segment away from mainstream Directs. That said, it could be that they will just trickle out trailers for all games as and when due to covid.
Looks decent. Not for me, not a big Pokemon fan, but it looks good.
The Direct is dead. Long live the Direct.
3 questions:
1) Who’s developing this?
2) Why is that Meganium so big?
3) Has Bounsweet always been able to fly?
@JokerCK This looks bigger and better in every way. Probably because it wasn't rushed.
Welp, gonna be broke this year too, huh?
Well this just looks great
@meeto_1 Gameplay is completely different - this is basically an on-rails shooter. What you’re suggesting wouldn’t allow the photo taking concept to be as fleshed out as this will be.
I'll admit Im one of the few pokemon apologists out there for a lot of what Gamefreak have been pulling in recent years. But this is a spin-off title and the fact that it gives off a much more advanced feel then Sword and Shield is a bit insulting. If the mainline games took some cues from this, they'd be completely amazing.
Im not interested in New Pokemon Snap because I dont see the appeal of an entire game dedicated to snapping pictures of pokemon. Especially since we have a button for doing so on the Switch itself. But I'm hoping Gamefreak takes this and incorporates some of these ideas into the next Mainline Game. We're coming up to the 9th generation now, aren't we? They need to start making some serious jumps now.
Never played the original Snap but this lions fun. Always looking for more ways to fill my Pokemon fix.
side note: I’m going to need some more Pokemon ports or new games for this 25th anniversary announcement
Yaay... Physical release!! 😀😀😀
Let's get physical, physical ! 🤟
@sikthvash Yes and no, Pokemon usually get revealed in their own directs outside of general Directs but after that they do show them in general directs (or direct mini).
Pokemon SwSh for example was revealed in it's own direct in February 2019 but then shown in the E3 2019 direct, the September 2019 direct and the DLC was shown in the March 2020 Direct Mini
@ryancraddock Could definitely be a good contender...
Wonderful news to wake up to. I played the N64 entry for the first time on the Wii U VC a couple years ago. It has held up quite well mechanically. This entry looks very promising so far.
First 3D World, now this? Dammit Nintendo, stop trying to make me go broke!
Maybe but probably not
I'll wait for reviews to hear about how long it is/how replayable it is/etc., but it's looking decent so far.
Mario next month, Monster Hunter in March and now this for April, that’s at least 3 big games for the next 3 months. Happy days for Switch owners
@mariomaster96 I stand corrected =0p Here's hoping we get traditional directs at some point. Safety first and all that though!
Never has this been so easy to say: DAAAAY OOONEEE!
The first game is such a huge part of my childhood. Played it to death with my brother and our friends.
This new game looks wonderful!
Not going to lie. I am so glad this is happening. Loved the first one and this looks wonderful
@Quarth just realised I pretty much said the same as you. Still counts tho!! Hehe
Did Pokémon Snap on the N64 take place in a specific region? Does every spin-off require that it takes place somewhere now? Is the Lental Region going to be brought up in any of the future games? Well, if the Orre Region is anything to go by, probably not.
Nintendo Direct is definitely OVER
This is a welcome surprise! Definitely plan to purhcase as long as the price is worth it.
Also, this doesn't deconfirm Directs. Pokemon always does things separate from Nintendo at large.
Next week or february partner direct i am calling it.
This looks like it will be a great game.
@JokerCK Actually it does look better than the main games, but it is still visually unpolished. When you look to literally any other first-party Switch game, the state of pokemon is absolutely inexcusable.
@everynowandben I’m not sure why the photography element couldn’t be fleshed out in an open world where you control the player. In fact surely it would be more exciting because you would have to find the hidden nesting spots or travel to the right mountain peaks during certain times/weather conditions to observe special behaviour of the Pokémon.
Taking a photo using the Mario odyssey system. Freeze frame and rotate around object, apply filters, stickers etc. Or use a similar system as BOTW and the animals are still moving. You could take selfie’s with Pokémon that are less hostile and scared of humans.
@mariomaster96 You don't like random nice surprises? I think that's better to wake up to than schedule myself to sit down for a direct I could possibly be overall disappointed in, but hey, maybe that's just me.
WHERE IS THE PRE PURCHASE BUTTON I'M READY
@Urso 🙄
@Munchlax
Bamco is developing this, although I have no idea which internal team is handling it. Maybe the same team as Pokken Tournament?
@Silly_G best comment. Niki Minaj, the Pokémon.
IT'S BEAUTIFUL.
Note how Meganium of all Pokemon is the one highlighted on the cover. Incredible, they can actually promote Pokes that are not overly shilled.
I adored the original, so I'll definitely play this.
I hope it will be compatible with the Labo VR camera. That would work perfectly with an on-rails photography game like this.
@KayFiOS Every spin off has had its own region. Every main game has had its own region as well.
@meeto_1 I don’t think what you’re suggesting would be bad necessarily, but that’s basically the equivalent of Star Fox Adventures compared to Star Fox 64. Pokémon Snap is an on-rails shooter, just like Star Fox 64. Fans don’t want it to be an adventure game, they/we want it to be what it is and always was.
The game looks beautiful, I want to get it but my only concern right now is if there is enough content to warrant 60 bucks, the old Pokemon Snap could be finished in little more than a few hours, though this one does have way more Pokemon. If the content is there I am down for playing it.
Looks beautiful
@Dpishere Same
@Dpishere The original was great because you could finish it in the span of one Blockbuster rental.
Wait wut?!?!? Really didn't think this would be out until fall as it's been invisible since the announcement.
Well this kills my March Direct @Grumblevolcano back to hoping for June.
@Ralizah Day 1 if it supports Labo VR. And since it's a camera game on rails it really should. Labo VR isn't PSVR but I own them both and Labo VR works well enough for short bursts, which an on rails game taking photos would likely be.
But it won't b/c why should it?
Edit: Watched the trailer. Barely stayed awake. Why are they marketing this game to the ASMR crowd? That trailer was HORRIBLE! I know on rails games aren't the most action packed but come on. Maybe they are marketing it to hypnotists to put their patients to sleep to dream of Pokemon? Need caffeine.
February - bravely default 2 and Mario 3d world
March - story of seasons and monster hunter rise
April - rune factory 5 and pokemon snap
Keep this up Nintendo!! This year is already better than 2020
@UltimateOtaku91 Def a great start to the year.
@HXLXIII Quite the opposite for me, I really love the anticipation for which cool new games could get revealed. It's just not the same if you go on a news site or twitter and see the news, all the excitement gets lost
@HXLXIII I just don't understand why they give each spin off its own region, because aside from the main line games, they never feel connected.
@JokerCK uh oh we have another person defending game freak
The showcasing of all kinds of Pokemon from each generation instead of the typical overfocusing on Gen I Pokemon is incredibly refreshing.
Wish they used this engine in the new games!
They need to localize titles again already. "New" doesn't have the same meaning in the US, where in Japan in this context, "new" roughly equates to the English "deluxe".
this leaves me hopeful that the next pokemon direct next month could be entirely focused on diamond and pearl remakes (if we get them of course). i personally think gf needs to take a break and wait longer so the next title is WAYYY better than sword and shield, but i wont mind one more gen 8 game
I hope it's not on rails. I'll buy it if not on rails.
@mariomaster96 I mean I got pretty excited seeing this in my news feed, but hey, ya know, to each their own! I am not saying I don't enjoy a good Ndirect, I'm just usually too busy to sit down and watch them, unless i know something I'm really anticipating and worth it is in it. Otherwise I'll find out about the other good stuff I "missed" elsewhere/eventually.
I kinda wish the real Pokémon games would be as lively as this game. I get why Gamefreak didn't do it, but it would have helped the franchise making the next big step.
@KayFiOS Do all the continents/regions in the real world ever feel truly connected? I've never been outside of the US, And I'm almost 30. The thrill of a new place is probably what they are going for. At least that's how I would perceive it. Different wildlife, different customs, etc.
@Munchlax the answer to your first question is Bamco
@HXLXIII Ok I lied, lol, i've been to Canada once as a teen, And it was pretty awesome.
That's an impressive trailer. It's packed full of charm, and looks great visually.
This was a welcome surprise. I know what I'm requesting for my birthday
And the game looks beautiful. I can't wait!
@Munchlax 1. When this was revealed at June 17th, 2020 it was shown that is developed by Bandai Namco, but which people from there are part of project I believe we don't know yet or at least I don't know.
2. When Pokémon releases trailer for any Pokémon related game they release bunch textual information outside video it self too. So those who follow Pokémon twitter already know why Meganium is glowing and big. https://twitter.com/Pokemon/status/1349710392755367936
3. Dunno.
@everynowandben fair enough. I feel like on-rails is really out of vogue and perhaps this game will not leave as many players content who remember and played the first one.
But if it turns out to be just the game fans want I’m happy for you. I hope future main titles do incorporate a camera feature like the one they just showed of for Bowsers Fury.
@JokerCK and you should learn the English language before you comment.
well this is just gorgeous
Looks great, will get it. Love the original. I hope Samuel Oak has a cameo in the game
No nintendo direct to announce this....
@HXLXIII Japan isn't connected to the US, but at least I know where it is in relation to the US.
@meeto_1 I'm guessing you didn't play the original Pokemon Snap, cause I have a hard time picturing its gameplay incorporated into the main games. Snap isn't just about taking random fun pictures, it's more of a puzzle game where you have to manipulate Pokemon and the environment with tools (often throughout the entire course) to trigger special poses that yield higher scores. There's nothing like it in any of the main games, and if they tried to shoehorn it in it would likely have to be a very simplified version.
@TeslaChippie
Yeah, this.
@meeto_1.
There are some great "photo modes" out there. Death Stranding has a fantastic one, in particular. But those are there for your own personal amusement, to capture fun moments. In Snap, the whole point is that, since you're on rails, you have a limited amount of time to find the Pokemon, draw them out, get their attention, find secrets, manufacture special situations and poses, etc. That's the whole challenge. I know on rails isn't exactly in vogue, but it's a different experience from, say, walking around in Breath of the Wild and snapping pictures of foxes from a mile out.
I never owned the original Pokemon Snap game, but would constantly play the demo via a kiosk at Blockbuster. Having said that, I am looking forward to playing this game and I can't wait until it is released.
Did the original offer much challenge? I never played it. I'm intrigued by this but concerned it might get old quick or not have much to do. I hope it's a game with good replay value.
@Kehkou Yeah I wish it was just called Pokemon Snap 2... I hate it when Nintendo just put New or Super at the front of the titles (Super Mario Party, the least super Mario Party game...)
@Clyde_Radcliffe The original can be completed in a single sitting. "Challenging" isn't the right word, nothing in Snap is gonna make you pull your hair out. This ain't gonna be the Dark Souls of animal photography games or anything. The fun of the original was that, while you could take pictures of Pokemon being cute, you'd get more points by being clever and bringing about unique events.
Like, a picture of a Pikachu = good
Luring Pikachu to a surfboard with food and getting a pic of him playing on it = great
The original had dozens and dozens of those little situations, and the whole fun of the game was figuring them out. Some of them were quite elaborate, requiring you to basically spend a whole course run setting up a rube goldberg machine to get one specific shot.
Not challenging, but fun and very charming.
Not my type of game. But i am glad a lot of people will be enjoying this game when it releases.
It looks gorgeous.
OH, i LOVE how they're showing me mon i can't use in the main game... LOVE IT!!
Labo VR Camera compatibility please > > >
@JokerCK You won't change there mind, I can tell their feelings from the many comments saying pretty much the same.
They should have checked the file size of the game, snap is a third smaller then sword and sheild.
@TeslaChippie Thanks! It does sound very interesting and different though maybe something better to buy on sale if it's a full price game.
pokemon company put out a press release. there are going to be 200 pokemon from 8 generations. 200! wow compared to the first game. that is alot. this is going to be awesome!
So Mario 3D World and Bravely Default 2 in February, Monster Hunter in March and Pokemon Snap in April. Helluva start to 2021.
@michellelynn0976
It really is. Apparently it was only 63 in the original. I didn’t realise it was so few!
@ThatNyteDaez so sweaty
@electrolite77. I know so awesome. i can not wait to get it.
I'm not seeing how this deconfirms directs? Pokemon always does their own thing
@TeslaChippie To also go along with what @Clyde_Radcliffe said, the game was set up in a way where it challenges you to improve upon your score. Whether it was getting Pokemon in those unique situations, taking a close-up shot, a Pokemon sticking out their tongue, or even a front-facing shot, you always felt you could do a little bit better.
I will agree the game wasn't overall challenging. The final picture is a Mew and that was (and probably remains) one of the more challenging objectives in the game. Hope there's more like that in this one
@dew12333 Mario Odyssey has a file size of 5,6 GB while Pokemon Sword has a size of 12,4 GB. Dragon Quest XI S has a file size of 13,9 GB.
Pretty sure that these file sizes don't show how big those games are. It mainly shows that Square Enix and Nintendo are better in compressing their files than GameFreak.
I think someone said it already, but a strong start to the year for Switch
This better have Nintendo Labo compatibility
@KayFiOS https://m.bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_world May or may not be a fun read for you, addresses some main points i am trying to get across. My main point is that there are many places/traditions/cultures/etc you do not know in the real world as well. Just like the regions in Pokémon, that they introduce with each new entry.
@MegaVel91 Try telling your teacher to sod off and see how you get on
The largely positive reaction has surprised me... I mean it looks like fun and it's obviously a huge improvement on the last Snap game, but is this really it? The trailer was average. The pokemon animations look OK at best. This looks like yet another huge missed opportunity... would love to be proven wrong.
(Maybe this is just another case of BotW making everything else look really average?)
@MajorTom Thank you for a more structured way of replying about the file size. As you have already figured I am not a programmer but I pretty sure that snap will be like the first with set stages/areas rather than open world like shield, pretty sure that makes a fair difference.
@dew12333 Well sword and shield aren't exactly open world either. Most routes are rather small corridors which you will likely be able to compare to the stages of snap. (with likely more detail in snap from what I saw in the trailer) The base game of sword and shield only has one open area, which is not really graphically advanced or lively at all. They improved on open areas with the last dlc but that is another story (and also not part of the base game storage amount)
2021 looking good
@JokerCK I think it's more the animations than the scale
Nintendo randomly announces this and now we know everything coming from February to April. Crazy how quickly that changes and people refuse to acknowledge it.
@MegaVel91 Lol yeah idk what you said as it appears you deleted your comment, but abuse doesn't seem like the right word. I'd like to guess they were just trying to get past the sensors on this site by using alternative words
200? Here’s hoping DLC is coming (if the game is good that is).
@meeto_1 All that sounds awesome!!! but is too much work for GF
Nope not a buy...I need all the pokemon in the game. I need all of them even the glitch from the GB version. If not this game is going to be bad.
Never played the OG one so will be be getting this one.
The original was more fun than it had a right to be and very charming. This looks to be more of that good stuff in every way. Definitely picking it up.
Well, where did this come from?
HOW IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THE FACT THAT FOR THE FIRST TIME THERE ARE REAL LIFE ANIMALS?(a toucan and a deer).
See? When you did the games of 2021 and include MP4 but didn't include Snap?
Everyone saying that Nintendo Directs are over clearly hasn't thought through the filming part that usually goes with them or wants to see everything announced from Sakurai's house.
Can't wait, hopefully ends up being a strong start for Pokémon's 25th Anniversary.
I'm just here for the negativity from Pokemon fans. The first comment in the thread gave me a taste of what I was looking for. It's by far the most negative branch of the Nintendo fan series. I don't hear as much complaining out of Mario or Zelda fans.
Honest question - when is the last time Pokemon fans were satisfied? Heard bad stuff about Sun and Moon, USun UMoon, Pikachu Let's Go, Pokemon SwSh ....it goes on and on.
Is there no joy left?
"over 200 pokemon" is a bit of a disappointment, since that means most pokemon probably won't be in the game. Still, unlike Sw/Sh at least this game has the excuse that they put a lot of effort into the models.
@electrolite77
Yeah, this isn't exactly my type of game, and neither is Bravely Default, but still, the first four months of this year there's something for Switch that should be able to satisfy most gamers. I'll be getting 3D World and Monster Hunter Rise for sure, if I can work into the budget maybe I'll branch out and take a flyer on this game if reviews and gamer feedback are good.
