It varies from person to person, of course, but your favourite console generation is often the one you played most in childhood — in that impressionable pre-to-early teen sweet spot where a foundation of gaming memories are formed. That's when you play the classics you return to later in life for the sheer pleasure of seeing old friends and blasting though a comfortingly familiar game using muscle memory. For many of us, the 16-bit era cemented our love for video games, and later this month the Super Famicom turns 30.
With the anniversary fast approaching, we'd like your help to assemble the top 50 Super NES games ever. We recently asked asked you to rank the top 50 Wii games, and the ordering of this list will be similarly fluid, dictated by the games' User Ratings in the Nintendo Life Games database and therefore subject to change even after publication. Once an entry reaches a minimum number of ratings, it becomes eligible for our Top 50 SNES games list.
Below you'll find a partial list of the SNES library. Feel free to let us know in the comments anything missing that you'd like to rate — preferably games you think could make the top 50 — and we'll do our best to accommodate additions. To rate any title, simply scroll through the alphabetical list to find the game you want (or type the title into the search bar at the top to save your scrolling finger), click the star to bring up a rating of 1-10, and click the score you feel it deserves — job done! If you've previously rated your SNES games, just put your feet up; those scores are already logged. And if you need a reminder on a particular game, feel free to click the game title and check out our vintage reviews and screenshots.
We'll publish the results around the anniversary, but in the meantime happy rating!
Thank you for rating your favourites (or otherwise). Feel free to discuss your favourite Super Nintendo games below, and we'll reveal the results next week.
We've already compiled the Best 3DS games, the Best Game Boy games, the Best GameCube games, the Best Nintendo DS games and the Best N64 games, so check out those lists if you can't get enough of Nintendo's copious back catalogue. If you're after something less retro and more modern, we've also got the Best Switch games (so far) available for your perusal.

Easily Chrono Trigger. I'd also give honorable mentions to Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VI, A Link to the Past, F-Zero, Mega Man X and DKC. The Super Star Wars games are hard as all hell but super underrated imo
Obviously this isn’t an exhaustive list, but where is Wizardry V?! Must have been tough to choose from the hundreds of games available to put on the list!
My favourites probably Super Metroid.
I enjoy ALTTP, but it’s probably my least favourite out of all the Zeldas I’ve played, and the only one I haven’t finished.
Also, I just can’t get into Super Mario World or DKC- does anyone else have this problem? It is worth mentioning that I did not play any of these until the SNES Classic Mini in 2018, so it may just be a case of not growing up with them- but then how come Superstar is the only Kirby that I’ve ever wanted to play past the first level on?
Whilst the SNES did a lot of things first, I think most series have surpassed these entries a long time ago.
This is like ranking your favorite children. Sooo many amazing games....
Castlevania IV, Dracula X, Super Metroid, Link to the Past, Mario World 1 and 2 (Yoshi's island), all 3 Donkey Kongs, Final Fantasy 3 (6), and Chrono Trigger, are all 9s and 10s for me.
I appreciate that we can give a score to each game, rather than explicitly ranking them. Several games deserve a score of 10: Super Metroid, ALTTP, SMW, FF6, Chrono Trigger, and some others.
Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and Yoshi Island is my top-3 for SNES.
Chrono Trigger is also the 2nd best game ever for me, the best one is such super-boring choice...FF7 (sigh, I knows!), the PSX original then, not that godawful and blasphemous total reimagination of Final Fantasy 7 which is called "FF7R", but it should be called "The Complete Hubris of Tetsuya Nomura" instead...3rd is Resident Evil 4 on GameCube.
It's a such pity that we never received all those japan-only games translated and released in the western. But some of them has been released officially for first time in english recently, like Seiken Densetsu 3, Romancing SaGa 2+3, but there're so many more. especially from Squaresoft and Enix!
Just release Wonder Project J in english on Switch!
Zelda ALttP, Crono Trigger and Terranigma are 10/10 games. Some of the best adventure/RPG games ever made. DKC is my other 10/10 game here. The second one would be a 9.5, equally awesome, but it wasn't the same without DK...
I'm missing Final Fantasy IV and VI in the list, by the way.
I never had a SNES, but I have played ports or remakes of many of its best games. My favourite ones are Tactics Ogre, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
When I was a child I also played International Superstar Soccer Deluxe and Top Gear a lot.
Of those available on Nintendo Switch Online, the ones I played the most were Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario Kart and F-Zero.
P.S.: Final Fantasy VI is in my backlog, but I don't doubt that it is in the top 10 SNES games.
Oh man I will narrow it down to yoshiI island and Mario world . Depends what mood ,but they are 10s and can play them forever. If I got my critical head on I will say that Link to past is a bit too hard in places, and super Metroid , the shooting is not that satisfying and can be frustrating when you do that spinning air thing. But I still love them! X x x SNES game I want to play one day is turtles in time xxx
E.V.O.: Search for Eden needs to be added. Probably one of the most interesting/mysterious games on SNES. I'd definitely rate it in my top 50, though not necessarily near the top.
So many great games. Looking at the library it's probably the best console ever made.
Blasphemy! Where is "the hunt for the red october" with it's special stages with the Super Scope?
Oof, this is a tough one. Just so many classics. I’d go for, in no particular order:
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy IV/V/VI which are all brilliant in their own right
Dragon Quest VI
Shin Megami Tensei and if
DKC 1 and 2
Super Mario Kart
Earthbound
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
F-Zero
Super Castlevania IV
Turtles in Time
Megaman X
Super Punch Out
Illusion of Gaia
Tales of Phantasia
Goof Troop (basically Resident Evil but Disney)
Harvest Moon
Shadowrun
I get searching for Bubsy not turning up results(wish I never heard of it too) but Tecmo Super Basketball & X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse not listed? And I know I played a SNES Sparkster!
@nessisonett Solid list right there.
Umm, there are more games missing from this list than there are on it. Granted the absence of sports games and licensed crap is fine, but a lot of really good and/or underrated games are missing, such as:
Earthworm Jim 1 & 2
Incantation
Joe & Mac 1 & 2
Metal Warriors
Run Saber
Skyblazer
Sparkster
I could go on but you get the idea.
Man rock n roll racing was awesome back in the day! Special mention to Lagoon and Illusion Of Gaia.
Mickey's Magical Quest
Aladdin
Tiny Tunes
@nessisonett why is that you put Illusion of Gaia on the list, but not Terranigma?? Do you really prefer it?? In my opinion, Terranigma is a way better game (although I love the other one too).
@the_beaver Honestly never played Terranigma. It’s one of those games that I’d pick up if it was rereleased but it just hasn’t been.
I might be the only one, but I absolutely adored the racing game "Top Gear" The soundtrack was fantastic, the controls were solid, and it was just a lot of fun to play. That's why I enjoyed Horizon Chase Turbo so much since it reminded me of Top Gear!
Games missing from the list which deserve a crack at the top 50. Sorry the list is list. Not my fault
Adventures of Batman and Robin
Aladdin
Alien 3
Ardy Lightfoot
Battleclash
Biometal
Blackthorne
Brainlord
Bust-A-Move

Wing Commander 2: The Secret Missions
X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse
If these games aren't added then I'm calling for a revote lol
@nessisonett Ah ok, it makes sense then XD. Whenever you have the chance, I really reccomend you play it. It's a great game, and improves everything that made Illusion of Gaia good.
Why is the chaos engine missing amongst others. It really feels like the snes list is going to be a bit of a farce.
Done. That was fun.
The SNES isn’t the holy grail of retro for me so I won’t go through the list but I will say that the RPGs on it were absolutely phenomenal back then. If you liked RPG’s the SNES was high heaven.
This list is definitely way too short. But it was fun voting.
@nessisonett wow haven't thought about Illusion of Gaia in ages. Not perfect, but definitely a fun and challenging one that came together really well, used to love idling away in the Dark Space
@the_beaver ha just was saying how much I liked Gaia and saw your comment about Terranigma, good to know!
@TG16_IS_BAE 750 games and they had to boil it down, Strike Gunner (a family favorite) is missing but i know it's not a huge game.
Never owned a snes but I did pick up the snes classic so I can only really go on those games but yoshis island and Zelda was my most played
Please NL, I’ve got a job, you know
Trials of Mana 3 and Final Fantasy V but no Dragon Quest V or VI? Hmmmm. Not sure what to thing about this.
What's the purpose of this vote? Or rather what's the purpose of the result?
@MrBlacky They did this a month ago for switch games, Just a fun end of year list
Did someone already post:
Bionic Commando
Also, thanks to whoever post Alien 3 (loved it)
@muscpt Kid Icarus was on the NES, not the SNES.
@GutayS5
yes, moments later realized I read to fast and missed the "s" in their NES, Lol
You guys need to add Skyblazer, a hidden gem of a game that was published & developed by Sony Computer Entertainment of America before they were even making PlayStation games.
This star rating is broken I can’t give Zombies Ate My Neighbz more than 10 stars
@niner Thank for this, I was wondering where battleclash, black thorne, and lost vikings were. after reading your list i realized there are a lot more that I would love to rate as well.
There are so many Games left haha
Glad that Goof Troop is in there, very underrated and partly forgotten Title.
Parodius (it is just called Parodius in Europe) is such a great Shooter.
Mystical Ninja is also much Fun.
Star Fox 2 is better than Star Fox 1.
@Munchlax
Yeah it's probably that you didn't grow up with the games. Probably makes it harder for you to rate them as high as some of these probably deserve. But definitely nothing wrong with liking other games in a series more than these though. I personally like ALTTP as my favorite Zelda game, with a tie between WindWaker and BOTW for a close second. But then I am in my forties and was in my mid-late teens when I played these originally.
Lost Vikings 2 and Looney Tunes B-Ball were not included in this list.
Sim City was the start of my love for city builders & Metal Marines was an awesome turn based strategy game with some base building elements. Id love to see both on the SNES Switch Online service. I remember really enjoying Lemmings 2: The Tribes but I only saw Lemmings on the list.
There's Donkey Kong Country 2 and then there's everything else.
Wow, there are a whole bunch of games missing from the catalog, especially licensed games (several of which were actually good back then)! You can't really call it a list of the best SNES titles until you guys fix that.
It's very weird to rate these now. So much history in-between when I first played them and now. Some have better longevity than others that I'd have put right on top at the time.
That said:
These are the fundamentals for me.
There are some that I missed at the first go, being distracted by SEGA games that were great, too.
I hope to see some games I never heard of appear on this list instead of the usual Super Mario World and Super Metroid!
That Wii list came out recently and didn't have Action Girlz Racing in the top 50, so I don't have much hope for this one.
Ogre Battle was outstanding. Did not know a Tactics Ogre game was on SNES....
@dartmonkey EVO search for eden should be on this list.
Pocky and Rocky should be on this list. It’s the only one of my favorites I couldn’t find on here. I rated all my others.
Chrono Trigger
Super Metroid
Zelda: A Link to the Past
The Secret of Mana
Mega Man X
Mega Man X2
Mega Man X3
Mega Man 7
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World
Earthbound
Turtles in Time
Donkey Kong Country
Legend of the Mystical Ninja
Hagane
Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen
Shadowrun
Demon Crest
I didn't find X-Men Mutant Apocalypse which was one of my all-time favorite games.
I'd love to be able to show some respect for Super Fire Pro Wrestling X Premium, although I'll understand if it's not available since it's technically SFC. Still, couldn't find Super Bomberman 2 or 3, and those are some fantastic SNES games.
Shame I can only vote for Chrono Trigger once.
There are a lot of games missing
Tiny tunes
Taz
Fatal fury
Duck dogers
Batman forever
Separation Anxiety
Art of fighting
And a lot of others
KIRBY SUPER STAR #1
SNES has a lot of GOATs. It doesn't seem fair really.
Missing a lot of what I'd say we're obvious calls, no megami tensei games whatsoever, no dragon quest, adventures of batman and robin, mechwarrior, and while some might not be super great, a lot of licenced/multiplatform titles too, X men, alien 3, alien Vs Predator, Aladdin, pocky and rocky, bust a move/puzzle bobble, panel De pon should probably be there too
Why aren't so many popular games in the list???????
And I knew a developer named their game after one of our songs, Ogre Battle, but I didn't know they had used another of our songs to compose the name Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen. Anyway, is the game good???
Easy:
1.SMW
2.megaman x
3.dkc2
4.ALttP
5.yoshis island
6.chrono trigger
7.kirby superstar
8.ff6
9.SMrpg
10.street fighter 2
Runner-up: earthbound
Wild card:super star wars
And my list of the not so obvious GOATs:
1.Sim City
2.Act Raiser
3.Tiny Toons Buster busts loose
4.pocky and Rocky
5.Mystical ninja
6.panel de pon
7.super Castlevania 4
8.earthworm Jim 2
9.doRemi fantasy
10.super bonk
@John_Deacon Wow. Legend. Ogre Battle was also epic. Thanks for inspiring it
Huh, where's Civilization, DOOM, E.V.O.: Search for Eden, International Superstar Soccer Deluxe, Lemmings 2: The Tribes, Mortal Kombat 1, 2, 3 & Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, NBA Jam T.E., Populous, Robotrek, Sim City 2000, Super Bomberman 2, 3..., Syndicate, Tetris & Dr. Mario, Theme Park, Wario's Woods, etc. With so many essential titles missing what's the point of voting?
Why isnt Big Sky Trooper in the poll? Shame on your Nintendolife for forgetting about Big Sky Trooper
Where is mortal kombat?!?!
cries in Metal Combat: Falcon's Revenge
Donkey Kong Country
Love the natural settings in the first one especially.
Earthbound was, and still is, the game of my childhood. I have replayed it many times and it never fails to bring me back in time to relive those wonderful days of wonder.
Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid are on top of my list.
Some missing gems:
Der Langrisser which is the basis for the langrisser 2 remake released recently.
Dragon Quest V seems also missing, which is one of the best plots in the series.
1. Link to the Past
2. Final Fantasy III
3. F-Zero
@niner
Definitely several on this list are in my personal top 50. I love the muliplayer stuff so King of Dragons, Knights of the Round, Run Saber, Sat Night Slam Masters and Bomberman 2 need to make the cut
Never given out so many 10's during one of these! Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Mega Man X, Yoshi's Island, ALttP, and Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War were all no-doubters for me, with a ton more getting 9's. Only the PS2 rivals the SNES for me in terms of the sheer quality of its game library. This will be fun to see the results!
I expect to see Super Mario World, All-Stars, and Yoshi's Island make the list. All great games. I hope Kirby Super Star and Kirby 3 make the list as well, as they're both also among my favorites.
Hope you all don't mind if I take a little trip down memory lane here...
Chrono Trigger, 10/10. All-around amazing game. Only complaint - I wish there had been more of it. Such an interesting world.
DKC 1 & 2, 9/10. DKC 3, 10/10. I realize a lot of people think 2 is the best. Personally, I prefer 3, even though it was the most unconventional of the three.
EarthBound, 10/10. I just wish it didn't feel so tedious. But it's all worth it in the end.
Mega Man X 1-3, 10/10. Will never forget these games. Still disappointed that X or Zero couldn't be added to Smash Ultimate.
Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 3, 10/10. Both amazing, both high on my favorites list. Biased towards SD 3 - it still amazes me how much content they packed into a SNES game.
Super Mario All-Stars, 10/10. This one gradually climbed higher into my favorites list over time. I don't think it gets enough credit for having remakes of four different Mario games along with a slightly updated SMW. It's the early history of Mario in one package. Can't complain about that. (well, I can't at least.)
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, 10/10. Still love it. It's a great treat traversing through an alternate interpretation of the Mario world.
Super Metroid, 10/10. I played it later in life and have zero nostalgia for it. But man oh man, what a great game. And "great" is an understatement.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, 10/10. Hardly my favorite Zelda game and I think it could be improved (mostly with a more diverse soundtrack and better graphics). But I recognize how great it is.
where's Earthworm Jim? <_<
NHL ‘93 (NHLPA)?
NHL ‘94?
The Romancing SaGa trilogy REALLY deserves to be here. Same for Dragon Quest V and VI.
Also, isn't it a bit late to still be calling Final Fantasy IV and VI, II and III?
@NGNYS Right, I saw that Seiken Densetsu 3 was listed here and got excited. I was so disappointed to not see the elusive Romancing SaGa trillogy here. Same for Dragon Quest.
I love Sensible Soccer <_<
There are many great games on the SNES.
There is however one timeless masterpiece. Chrono Trigger.
This, alongside Pokemon Gold/Silver are the only games from that era that still make it into my top 5 games of all time.
These games are missing from the database:
Super Bomberman 2,3,4,5
Dragon Quest 1-6
Sparkster
Had fun voting, but like others have noted this list sorely needs expanding.
I have a lot of love for prince of Persia on the snes. Konami did an incredible job translating this to the snes with one of my all time favourite soundtracks and an overhauled graphics engine. Did I mention the soundtrack?
Axelay is another favourite of mine with graphics and sound still holding up well today (and proved the snes could handle shm ups
I agree with others. Too many games I owned or played missing from the list.
SECRET OF MANA
Kirby's Fun Pack
DKC Trilogy
Mario World 1 and 2
Secret of Evermore
Seiken Densetsu 3
Zombie's Ate My Neighbours
Terrinigma
Mystical Ninja
Goof Troop
Pop and Twinbee Rainbow Bell Adventures
Could Micro Machines 2 and Mortal Kombat 2 be added please?
I never understood the fascination with DKC. Yes it was a technical marvel for the system, but the gameplay itself was meh.
Gundam Gachapon World X
Final Fantasy III
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Super Street Fighter II
Wild Guns
Contra III
Front Mission
Natsume Championship Wrestling
Super Bomberman II
Fire Pro Wrestling X
Most of mine are pretty predictable, so I'll just throw out the ones that are pretty weird (high or low). Ready for the flames!
Unusually high:
10/10 Mario's Super Picross (I 100%'d this on Switch)
9/10 Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest
9/10 Super Bomberman
8/10 Animaniacs
8/10 Super Turrican
7/10 Biker Mice From Mars
7/10 The Addams Family
7/10 Lemmings
Unusually low:
2/10 Mega Man X2
2/10 Mega Man X
2/10 Super Adventure Island
3/10 Secret of Mana
4/10 Secret of Evermore
4/10 Breath of Fire I and II
5/10 Donkey Kong Country
5/10 Donkey Kong Country 3
7/10 Donkey Kong Country 2
7/10 Super Metroid
7/10 Seiken Densetsu 3
If you could pop Mortal Kombat II in there perhaps...the SNES version destroys the Mega Drive one!
@6thHorizon yes yes, Mortal Kombat and Micro Machines 👍👍
Being from America, I didn't grow up with it, but IMO Terranigma is absolutely one of the best games on the console.
The rest of my picks are pretty obvious though. Except Secret of Mana, I really don't like, or even understand the love, for that game.
For me, some of the best SNES games are Megaman X2, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Super Metroid and Yoshi's Island. I played Megaman X and remember playing a lot of All Stars Super Mario Bros 3 (I never played it on NES). I did play Super Mario Kart but wasn't fond of the franchise until Mario Kart 64.
I didn't play or knew of a lot of third party games because I started playing SNES games in the first years of the N64 (I was like 5 or 6 years by then). I mostly played the games rented and the videos that my parents visited didn't have a lot of games.
Games like Zelda, Final Fantasy, Kirby and even fighting games were unknown to me, with the exception of Killer Instinct and Mortal Combat. I came to know about the other franchises in the N64/PS1's life. Nevertheless I enjoyed the games I only knew of at the time.
Rated some I knew, but noticed several games I own missing. Ultima the False Prophet, Robotrek, Eye of the Beholder, Drakkhen...
Admittedly I don't care much for the latter two, but I thought I'd mention it.
Chrono Trigger is my all-time favorite. Beyond that, I love Super Metroid and Illusion of Gaia, in addition to various others - LttP, Secret of Man, SMW, Yoshi's Island, DKC games, etc.
Mega man x2, Super Castlevania 4, Super double dragon, Super Mario world, Super metroid.
@niner it's criminal that Wario's Woods isn't in Nintendolife's list. Also, Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Paperboy should be on the list.
My 10s are:
9s are too many to list.
I'd like to think there can be only one 10 and that has to be Chrono Trigger. ALttP, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, Terranigma and DKC2 are all solid 9s. Secret of Mana doesn't quite hold up, so it's an 8 for me. Trials of Mana would have been another 9 were it not for the tiresome lag in menus.
Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse and Aladdin are sad omissions in this list.
No Kikikaikai/Pocky and Rocky 1&2... no Dragons Quest/Warriors series...no Tales of Phantasia. Super half hearted attempt Nintendolife
Why is "The Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse" not even listed on this site?
@Alphack3r
May I ask why you rate
Mega man x and secret of mana so low?
Two of my top 3 are conspicuously missing, NL... ngl
You really have to put more Games in there.
Tiny Toons Adventures - Busters Bust Loose is a short but really fun Game.
Wolfenstein is also pretty fun, even if it is censored, it has some great improvements (like a map)
Doom is a bit ugly but playable and at least it has more Colours than other Console Version of its time... and the Music is good haha
Worms is also really ok to play on the SNES.
The Dragon Quest Games are playable with English Patches and are good.
Primal Rage has to be in there.
Gods.
Joe and Mac 1, that i like more than the second.
And i want to downvote Hulk and Batman Forever, some more i have forgotten right now
Megaman X, LTTP and DKC2.
Really hope DKC2 rightfully ends up on top of the first one. The first one is an enjoyable platformer that controlled well, but the 2nd has so much better level design and gameplay variety. Transforming into animal buddies meant levels were built to take advantage of their abilities, leading to amazing levels like bramble scramble and web woods that DKC1 has nothing close to.
Also, 90% of DKC1 bosses were trash.
Still the best console ever for me personally:)
Super 3D Noah’s Ark
Final Fantasy III (VI), Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country 2, Chrono Trigger, Mega Man X, and Super Mario World are all so dear to my heart, it would be such a shame if none of them got recognition in the Top 10.
Also I don't like Secret of Mana. I don't understand everyone's love for that game. It's visually nice and has good music but the combat system and camera are atrocious. I won't call it overrated because obviously people like it, I just don't see the appeal. Seiken Densetsu 3 is a far better experience than Secret of Mana.
How weird to see Alcahest on this list. You guys downloaded a random snes rom torrent?
Zombies ate my Neighbors better make it into the top 50
Final Fantasy III *** Best RPG on SNES & Best RPG of all Time !!! IMO
@JacobMonks Amen to your comment on Secret of Mana. imo it's the most overrated SNES game
@niner I don't really like calling things overrated. It's obvious Secret of Mana has something that people see in it otherwise it wouldn't be so beloved. I just don't see it. I tried several times and it's just not for me.
That was fun. List of SNES games could really do with some padding out, but great to see one of my more random faves Krusty's Fun House on the list! Perhaps Bart's Nightmare could be added?
I felt like I did this before... but then I saw that I didn't rank any of the DKC games! Let's go through this again!
Lots of good games not on the list.
My vote from what is on the list goes to Terranigma.
Easily the best SNES game in every way possible.
I see the Dragon Warrior (ie what the Dragon Quest games were renamed to) are not there. A shame that as many of us would easily have them in the top 50
Star Fox 2 never released on the SNES so it should not be on the list.
I wish they'd update the article to say that the Super Famicom is 30 rather than 25, it shouldn't annoy me but it does.
