Update: As you might have guessed following his tweet earlier this week, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has now also congratulated Sony on the launch of the PlayStation 5.
Respect and good vibes all 'round. You love to see it.
Original Article (Tue 10th Nov, 2020 15:00 GMT): As we mentioned earlier today – admittedly because we were joking about the console being a decent display stand for our beloved GameCubes – the new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles have launched today worldwide.
The systems kick off a whole new generation of gaming, set to be expanded further when the PS5 launches in a couple of days' time. Whether you play Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, or indeed a combination of the lot, it's fantastic to see consoles continuing to thrive and be at the centre of our favourite hobby.
Putting any rivalries aside, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has captured this spirit nicely today by congratulating Microsoft's Xbox team and its head, Phil Spencer, on the launch of its latest systems.
Of course, Microsoft's relationship with Nintendo has been blossoming nicely just lately with more and more exciting collaborations, so perhaps this friendly gesture isn't quite the shock it might have been in the past. Spencer recently described Nintendo as "a jewel" in the industry, and has recently stated that the team "could be open" to putting Game Pass on Switch one day.
Are you expecting a shiny new Xbox to be delivered today? Will it sit alongside your Switch for the next generation? Let us know with a comment.

In a perfect world, I would love to have one of the consoles. I just don't have the time or disposable income to buy one in general or justify buying one or support buying games for multiple consoles when I barely have the time to play all the ones I have for just the Switch
Just realized the new Xbox, Playstation, and Game and Watch are releasing in the same 4-day period, all on different days.
buttering them up for Rare Replay I hope!
Xbox Series X on Switch when?
The Xbox does look like it’s the better machine this time round, I just couldn’t do without Playstation exclusives and Game Pass PC means I can play Xbox exclusives without buying the system. I’ll probably get the PS5 instead but not until they sort the multitude of issues.
"Will Xbox Series X/S sit alongside your Switch for the next generation?"
Not today, not tomorrow, not next year, will never.
Cannot play DDR Ultramix and DDR Universe = No Buy.
@UmbreonsPapa Oh man, I feel this. I keep looking at all the shiny ray tracing and 60 frames per second and 4k resolution and thinking, “maybe....” And then I look at my massive Switch backlog and I think “nah”.
@nessisonett What kind of issues?
I too can't go without the PS exclusives. Spider-Man and God of War are MUST haves for me.
I only recently (august, I think?) jumped on the PS4 bandwagon, and have played No Man's Sky almost as much as I played BOTW.
Hours of Aimless Wandering is very much a key gameplay element, for me!!!
But I'm in no rush to upgrade any further, unless someone releases "Aimless Wandering Simulator 2021" with a 1:1 Free-Roaming Earth to journey through.
I just cannot see ANY reason to buy an X Box Series X/S right now. Game Pass may be great but to shell out £450 to play games you can already play on your last gen console doesn’t make any sense at all. The cost of expanding storage for the s makes that become around the same price as the series X although S will sell to those that want a cheap way in. In time they will of course be great but right now I think it would make more sense to buy a top gaming PC rather than spending money on something that on launch day doesn’t offer that much new. After all, gaming is about the games and whilst a huge back catalogue is fine, new games and new experiences are what deliver and on day one, for me, X Box does neither.
Wintendo!
@Jayenkai I would seriously just buy a cheap PS4 or PS4 Pro right now. You will have at least a year of being able to play the same games albeit they won’t load as quickly. And it means when you do want to upgrade you can probably save at least 100 notes.
I plan to get an Xbox Series X at some point, but probably not until at least RTX enabled Minecraft is available on it. My son uses the Xbox One more than anyone, and that's the only thing he would probably play.
If I do as I've done in generations past, I'll get a PS5 in two or three years. But between Microsoft stepping up their production of exclusives, and Sony being Sony, that could very well change. I'll be quite interested to watch how the twins perform, in the near term, and beyond.
'Congratulations on the launch of your system, and a great line up of games to boot.....(looks for games)....as I said, congratulations on the launch of your system '
@Zuljaras i don't think they mean issue as in the console itself, but issues within the company. Lying to consumers, raised price tags, and just a general lack of transparency and thought towards consumers. Also their extreme censorship rules are starting to scare developers off. Not looking too good for them at the moment. The raised price tags are making me wait till the summer, there's really little need for me to get the console until at least horizon forbidden west or ragnorok comes out.
I'm just getting ready to go grab mine. Can't wait for the new generation to start and see where it takes us. Happy gaming ya'll
@Zuljaras None as far as I can see, it’s probably just saltiness on their end about not getting a launch day order.
@LunarFlame17 I keep looking at the Series S and thinking for a Game Pass device(and with it a lot of games I want to play and would save the cost of buying on Switch) it will be great but also I have a backlog and regardless I'll be unlikely to be able to buy one anytime soon anyway!
everyone: "XBOX GAMEPASS CONFIRMED FOR SWITCH"
I don't see myself buying either of the new consoles to be honest, even if I could afford them at launch.
I think Switch/PC is a good enough combo for now. Focus on the first party Switch games and then get everything else on PC where it's cheap
@Zuljaras Storage including initial size and the price of expansions, the price of new games without PS Now providing as much value as Game Pass, backwards compatibility only being PS4 games compared to OG Xbox, 360 and One, Vita not being supported with Remote Play, the strange lack of a web browser and the lack of any killer software for the first 6 to 9 months. I would like to play Demon’s Souls as it’s the only Souls game I haven’t played but it can wait.
@GilbertXI Wow I guess I missed some news
1. By price tag you mean the 70$?
2. Lying? About Miles Morales being exclusive?
3. The small SSD size?
As for the censorship ... well I do not care that much as long as games are playable. I can live without nudity. Or you mean something else?
@nessisonett ooops let me tag you here because the comments fly fast here You answered most of my points
@jarvismp Absolutely! Managed to get a nice cheap PS4Pro, which I'm using to RemotePlay on my iPad.
(My various head issues make TV Gaming incredibly nausea inducing!!)
After years of fun with Switch in handheld, I figured it was worth at least trying the PS4s Remote Play, and was incredibly happy it wasn't a wasted opportunity!!
I'm glad that console manufacturers are congratulating rather than slapping.
Switch and PC for me. PS5 and XboxX are the least exciting "next gen" in 25 years. It would be actually hard to be less impressive to me.
i wonder if Nintendo is also gonna congrat Sony on the PS5 lauch(considering they history).
@Zuljaras problem about censorship is no developers like it, making them opt out of the console all together. Or if Nintendo or Microsoft comes up to offer an exclusive deal, they will be more inclined to take it.
$70 is not the end of the world, its just the implications of it. Its kind of already being shown, but the developers will keep on inching up the price, which will just make inflation go up even more. Its the fact that they are getting away with it this easily is what worries me,. Not to mention they're raising the price to 80 euros in Europe instead of 70 or so, not that familiar with the conversions, but either way a complete scam.
Lying not only about exclusives but about storage size and other things. It's just a hot mess.
I don't remember any controversy about SSD, it's the only thing that was not marketed poorly. But I have been taking a break from all news lately, for my own sanity, so I wouldn't know.
Doug seems to be more focused on the money than customer/ fan service. Wish they'd fix the issues with primary and secondary consoles, it sucks having to swap every time. I miss Reggie, way more personable and involved with Directs
@TeamRocket47 That's the real three-way console war right there - and G&W will probably do respectable sales
@quinnyboy58
Yes! Surely Microsoft can see that Cuphead and Ori were successful on Switch and that the larger audience for Rare Replay is on Switch. They've made probably most all the money they are going to make for it on Xbox consoles, might as well cash-in on Switch!
When are we done with this dystopia?
The US usurper, Trump, has been defeated. When will Nintendo be liberated from Bowser?
@LunarFlame17
Um, 4k 30 you mean. Ain't nothing gonna ray trace (their very simple implementation of it) at 60fps/4k.
I'd have rather sony/ms gone with 1080/60/full FX but it seems those guys can't give up the 'Moar resolution' war. Heck so far the PS5 is upscaling more than the XBSX so those dumb dumbs ain't even truly hitting 4k already on pretty bog standard hardware (nothing much special with the new twins).
Though ol' Doug needs to start talking about a Switch 2 or looking for a new job. Time for N to get off the dang pot and update the old girl.
The fact that he's congratulating Xbox and not Sony speaks volumes from a marketing point of view. I think that we're going to see a lot more of the Microsoft-Nintendo partnership these coming years.
@rdrunner1178 I’m really surprised it hasn’t happened yet. Seems a no brainer as Rare Replay would sell well on Switch I’m sure!
@nessisonett wow, I admittedly thought I was the only customer driven away by no Vita support.😅
Disgusting beahviour. Bowser never concedes to the competition. HARDWARE SPECIFICATION HARASSEMENT!
Good to see. The more Competition the better, it drives the whole industry on.
@Vriess
It may just be that Xbox actually launch today whereas Sony are a couple of days away. See what he does when the PS5 launches.
@Zuljaras Honestly, they’re small issues but there’s been quite a few of them which has put me off at launch anyway. Perhaps after the first price cut and then there’ll be loads to play on the console at that point too!
There are rumors that Microsoft is looking to buy a Japanese company. Everyone is suggesting Sega, but Nintendo already has a cozy relationship with Xbox...so much so that Phil Spencer said that Nintendo needs to be protected
@jarvismp
I’m the opposite. The idea of taking my large Xbox library (thanks to BC and Game Pass) and playing them with genuine improvements like better frame rates and decreased latency, along with better graphics and QOL stuff like much faster loading and Quick Resume is what sold me. I thought about a PC but for the price of a Gaming PC to match Series X I could buy a Series X and a PS5 (for the exclusives) and a little laptop to do Computing on. Different strokes etc.
I'm happy to see Nintendo congratulate XBox. It would be wonderful to see Rare Replay and a new Banjo Kazooie game on Switch. Oh and Halo Trilogy. And...and...oh...hey I can dream.
Will buy series X early next year.
@GrailUK
Lol, i only need one game on a nintendo console, Killerinstinct...........
Bowser only congratulating Microsoft is like Japanese developers neglecting easy ports to Xbox consoles. This shouldn't come as a shock to people. Besides, did you ever consider that Sony is the only one to really drive the whole "console wars" into the 9th generation?
I appreciate the good relationship between Nintendo and Microsoft. It has allowed players to get Minecraft on not only the Wii U, but the New 3DS and the Switch. It allowed Banjo & Kazooie and Steve/Alex/Zombie/Enderman to participate in Smash. Most importantly, it opened the possibility of having the Switch as another option to play Microsoft games, given we already got some former exclusives already.
It's cool to see companies surviving side by side also work together and acknowledge eachother. Good to see Bowser give credit like a boss.
Pun intended.
@UmbreonsPapa I'd like one console too. But that would mean a much more powerful nintendo console. I'm always willing to pay more since it would save me money buying a Xbox or playstation but I think most people are going to buy multiple consoles anyways. I bought a Xbox series x simply to play f1, dirt rally, and fifa with my nephew. That's a huge waste of money.
@The-Chosen-one Hahah, yes that too! (oops)
I just sold my never played ps4 to get an oculus quest 2. After a week and about 50 hours over the 3 of us, I am selling our never played Xbox 1 for another quest 2. That will give us 3 household switch’s, two 3ds’, and 2 quests. I believe the next gen of gaming isn’t just better graphics, but vr. I also believe SuperHot
in VR is really the Matrix.
I can't believe the guy's last name is actually Bowser.
If I was buying one of the consoles it would be a series X. I still sort of want one...
I honestly keep forgetting they're launching new systems right away. Just a few other things happening this year that keep taking my attention away from such things I guess, lol
@brunojenso Myself included. (Unless I pick up Let's Go Eevee instead).
first time Xbox buyer. my series X is on the delivery truck right now! ... and then i pick up my PS5 on Thursday. might as well go for broke and get all the systems!
I hope Microsoft shows gratitude by allowing Rare Replay to be released on the Switch lol.
@nessisonett what issues?
@nessisonett I wouldn't call those issues as they are nitpicks. I have my series x,PS5, and pc all for different reasons. Back compatibility just isn't going to be a real thing beyond ps4 so I think those dreams die there. Vita remote play is very much not worth it and not the novelty it use to be considering vita doesn't support a 5ghz connection.
Can see the arguments for not upgrading. I however ducked out early of the last gen and sold my One X for £320 before pricing was revealed for series X and the second hand market prices started to plummet. Only had to find an extra £130. Sold so much stuff for other reasons but was able to top up and order my series X. Just finished work to come home to my new console. Happy days.
Have to say that I miss Reggie so much :/
The trade:
Microsoft Gamepass on switch.
Nintendo mobile games on xbox (and switch).
You may not think this is a fair trade, but remember this gives Xbox a mario kart and a fire emblem.
@zupertramp
Well, at least his last name is not Koopa (Doug Koopa) 🤣🤣🤣
There are some common names that we think it came from video games first, let's say Seymour from FF X.
There are some peoples have Seymour name as first name or last name.
My XboxSeX is sitting right behind the Switch on the left side of my TV. Looks real good too.
Tomorrow, my PS5 will sit on the right hand side. And the holy trinity will be complete.
While the Xbox won't be sitting next to my Switch (nor will the PS5), I would love to have Gampass/xCloud on my Switch.
I'll definitely get an Xbox Series X when they bring out a beatifully themed special edition of it. And when I have a next gen TV that can deliver all that xbox goodness.
I 💚 Xbox.
I ❤️Nintendo.
💚&❤️
Probably waiting for the next Fable to come out, then I would consider the new Xbox or if I can stream Fable. And PS5 down the road for their first parties and exclusives. But like many I have a backlog on many platforms.
@rockodoodle I'd like to personally congratulate you on behalf of myself and the rest of the comment section.
Probably will get one next year at this time... Maybe a little sooner. I like the controller, interface and I have a backlog on that console too.
@Aerona I always wanted to be first at something....
Planet coaster on game pass today - tremendous game - very impressed. My x series still to arrive. I don’t expect much of a gfx difference tbh - load times etc however will be significant improvement (I hope)
@Punisher67 should add I am moving from a one x on 4K tv to series x
Happy to see Nintendo returning the favour, Microsoft always speaks so highly of them. Like last gen, I'll probably sit this one out without getting a PlayStation or an Xbox, but I love reading the industry news regardless.
I think the time is right for me to buy a PS4. (Not a typo).
although i miss the magical moment from day one, i was always dissapointed in the months after i don't buy nexgen consoles from day one any more. i wait at least a year when there are a bunch of great games available, and the console price drops or you get bundles.
after 2005 it was alway a win win situation.
beside that, i realy like the switch, i dont have the need of a new console.
@Punisher67 i have the latest lg oled cx 65inch.
curious about the 120fps at 0.01ms.
but i wait till next summer
@WCB you are just like me when i was younger lol.
gotta have em all:)
enjoy mate
Being a gentleman and respecting your competitors are great traits. Hats off
@jarvismp Every generation of new graphics cards on PC launch without 'exclusive' games, but PC gamers use upgrade mainly to play games they already have.
The cross gen releases will have a nice visual boost regardless and all the previous gen multiplat games are getting excellent performance boosts, which are best on Series X.
All I'll say is people want consoles on launch day, others don't. People pay full price, others wait.
Kinda defeats your point lol.
@Anti-Matter I wish there were modern day DDR games on Xbox. A man can dream.
Staying with my switch
How meaningful...
Well you know what console the Nintendo of America President will be playing on tonight.
Nice. Good to see that Nintendo is being nice and isn't being intimidated my microsoft. That made no sense
I am more excited to get my PS5 in January than the Xbox Series X tbh. Dualsense is going to change gaming forever.
Now ask Microsoft for Banjo Kazooie back
@Lordplops This time it doesn't matter, since the new series XBOX has full backwards compatibility.
So all the latest and upcoming titles still planned for the previous/current XBOX will be compatible with the new XBox series S/X.
All current available titles can be played on the new console as well.
This is a huge difference compared to previous generations. Even though the current XBox has backwards compatibility with XB360 and older, it took quite some time to get in place.
So people upgrading or new to XBOX Series S/X have a ton of games to play right out of the box.
@nessisonett
Seems your post has been a neon sign; alas, I do agree with you in so much as that having my gaming PC so pass on Xbox console, and PS5 I too will press pause.
Well. You play offline and in ten minutes time your game stops working! This is exactly the same issue that the 2013 XBOX had! It’s 2020 for goodness sake!!
Also issues with power buttons and over heating. If MS wanted a disastrous start to its new console cycle, they have nailed it.
@Jeronan Wow, I know nothing about this generation of consoles. Just had no interest since I had my Switch. If it can run all previous game releases on Xbox and the 360 that's pretty sweet. Not enough to get me to buy one though haha.
@Jeronan Ah! Y'know you may have just hit the nail on the head why this next generation feels more like another refresh of the last one to me.
@Jeronan OG XBOX and 360 compatibility is limited to what they decide we get though which kind of sucks but what they did choose is pretty good overall, I think almost all my 360 games will work on it.
Unless you guys are seeing "Switch U" or "PS6" somewhere I'm not, a new generation of gaming arrived three years ago. Now it has just been largely completed (although I may be forgetting something unreleased from Atari and whoever else?🤔)
I was thinking about getting a PS fir MLB The Show. But since the 21 version will also come to Switch, I am good.
My take on the new generation is. This is the most boring one yet. No exclusives yet and all the talk about loadtimes and ray tracing. I'm just glad Nintendo is still in the game. My switch is still the only modern gaming machine in my collection and I dont think it's going to chance before nintendos next big console release.
I am curious about the ps5 controller though. Really want to try it out.
Buying a ps5 as soon as possible. Don't really care for the xbox. Nintendo will always be my default of gaming, so it seems.
Both Xbox and PS are just doing the bare minimum to justify a hardware upgrade. Consumers need to make their choices. Buying these day1 are pointless, to me.
If you don’t have a switch or all 3 consoles, I feel you’d be better served buying that instead to boost your potential library than a new gem system that will save you load times.... meh.
@nessisonett Snap! My gut says the Xbox Series X is technically the better console. Don't know why, it just does.
And Sony exclusives are up there with Nintendo's in terms of their quality and my need to have them.
If anyone can order a ps5 and Xbox series x...
Guys, I think that Bowser is taking over PlayStation and Xbox!
RTX 3090, 3080, 3070, PS5, XSX, Ryzen 5000... AMD 6800XT in 2 weeks.
It has been a Hardware launch bonanza!... and everything is Sold-Out. New generation of Gaming has landed for sure - Craziness.
Xbox Series X is great so far. Really enjoying the RTX, 4K and HDR. Having gone from a vanilla Xbox One and never owning a One X the change is dramatic and well worth the price. All my Xbox One games look better than ever and some are even optimized for Series X now at no additional price. PS5 will have to wait a few years but I always get roped into buying the sony console second by exclusives.
He should really stop hanging out with the enemy! This is a console war!
Got my Series X and it’s lovely. Good to see the guys at the top of the industry get along better and are more grown up than some (too many) of the people playing the games. They might be rivals but they also realise they need each other.
No! I am happy with what my Nintendo Switch Lite gives me. The only reason I play Xbox if at all is for PSO 2. I qm not getting another Xbox.
Hmm I don't see a compelling reason to buy either console yet. I never owned an Xbox before and probably never will. I'm not interested in subscription services and all their exclusives are coming to PC anyways. I'll consider a PS5 once Gran Turismo 7 and Persona 6 come out.
@dmv-mon Whenever Nintendo comes with next I will get that.
Skipping this fake next gen consoles... loading times and slightly better graphics dont really make for a better experience for me.... and no new console can beat nintendo for their games. Switch all the way for me and i kinda hope next gen fails
@dmv-mon did you just reply to yourself?
I would love to buy the ps5, but my wallet says no so ill prob wait 2-3 years
Switch already started the new gen.... Ps5 and xbox finally stepped in...
After building my PC, Im officially done with PS and XBOX. Nintendo wins for me with couch co-op and its exclusives.
I've spent maybe 300 hours total of gaming on PS4, which is the same amount of time I spent making levels in Mario Maker 2 lol.
This was actually one of the worsworst launches in history...IF you could actually get one.
If you somehow managed to beat it a scalper/bot then you might not even get it launch day. Then when you do get it, there's really only 2 or 3 games that are even new and worth it.
Otherwise it's just a 500$ upgrade for old games
Nintendo doesn't really compete with MS or Sony anymore. Both have long since abandoned the family and kids demographic. Nintendo is really the only company that consistently tries to make new experiences. They're not always on point (the cardboard stuff), but at least they're trying.
Nintendo: Congratulations on launch! (but our Switch is the only console available in stores, lol.)
@BirdBoy16 Sweety! I do alot things to myself 😚
@dmv-mon I’m sorry I asked 😳
Lol there goes all the third part support come 2021.
Nintendo is only at their best when they got stiff competition, so it's nice to see Bowser be sportsmanlike about it.
@Malones2792
Let's see about that.
Releasing your expensive productions only on new consoles, with install bases of just a few million, is unlikely to be a wise financial decision.
At this point, the Switch version is essentially the GameBoy tie-in you'd be planning anyway back twenty years ago.
