Minecraft's Steve Revealed As Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Next DLC Fighter

I am not buying. On the positive, at least he is optional. I was holding off on buying the Fighters Pass in case he ended up being part of it. Glad I did't!

Minecraft is a game very near and dear to my heart because of how it factored into my childhood. I'm absolutely ecstatic over this reveal, even though I don't really play it anymore

I'm just hoping for the Doom Slayer now, he's pretty much the only feasible character among those I'd like (Skull Kid...a man can dream).
Travis would also be nice, especially with NMH3 coming out; a SMT rep would be cool as a tie-in for V, but alas we already have a character from a SMT subseries.

O couldn't care much for minecraft but this one does sound unique as hell, and that is what I like about new smash character. Way better than byleth which didn't add anything impressive to the game.

So disappointed... When I saw it started with Mario, I thought someone from the Mario universe. I was hoping for Waluigi (although Luigi would be a better choice to introduce him than Mario), but this??? I never expected this tbh...
Well, at least I have like 70 other characters I really enjoy, and hopefully 4 more in the future.

Reservations about the creator of mine craft aside, I can see why they added these characters. It's possibly the most popular modern game, and the highest grossing. Sakurai seemed massively salty though.

@SalvorHardin I could tell he just HATED putting him in smash. Not the coding he could do that with his eyes closed even with the extra challenge. Steve was just not a character that he envisioned in the game. To be honest I am absolutely ecstatic he is in minecraft was one of the only super popular cross platform game that was actually fantastic (cough fortnite was bad cough)

Overall indifferent about Minecraft, and I get it's cultural relevance, but man, that pixelated model juxtaposed against the rest of the characters in Smash is reaaaally rough. A walking glitch in the game that kinda ruins the immersion for me. Wish I could selectively remove characters from the Season Pass lol

Minecraft makes sense, but still doesen't look like like a good fighter.

I know "Steve?" isn't really a great "character", but he represents a great and massive game, includes a more iconic character in Enderman, and has a very unique way of functioning. I applaud Sakurai so much for reworking the entire game to add in such a unique character.

I'm not really a minecraft guy, but if you're looking to add in gaming icons you can't really deny the impact the game has had. Also Steve looks like an interesting choice, and I'd kinda been hoping for a new weird smash fighter.

Edit: Also for those saying the art style doesn't fit, you do remember Mr Game & Watch, right?

Steve probably wasn't fit for Smash at all. I'm putting my hopes on Challenger Pack 8 being Crash Bandicoot now.

I really thought it would be something from the Super Mario universe. Good surprise, and my son will be thrilled, but I'm not emotionally invested in the character. It'll be a fresh set of mechanics in the game though.

My favorite thing about these presentations is trying to discern when it'a a Sakurai pull Vs when it's a pull from the suits at the top.

Same thing effectively happened with Byleth when they were revealed.

Not...the character I was begging for. But good for those that wanted him.

I'm happy. It's a different way to play, which is what dlc that costs this much should add, not just what amounts to a cosmetic reskin of an existing character. I was hoping for Crash or Ryu Hayabusa though.

This is not a good Smash Character. He's only in the game because it's from a high selling franchise. Nothing else. This is my true first disappointment from the character pass 1 and 2. Hard pass for me. I'm happy for Minecraft fans though

I get why cause it's a absolute juggernaut of a game and I've enjoyed playing it before but the characters just arent well characters.

@The-Chosen-one um minecraft is a fantastic game with a lot of people loving it pretty sure just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isnt a huge reveal to most. Fortnite was always trash but was popular, minecraft has stood the test of time and is still a great game today.

This is actually a very nice surprise. There wasn't any character I didn't want in, but I had pretty much written off Steve months ago. Honestly, the only reason I didn't want the character in was because the visuals and animations would look kind of janky by default. Minecraft's stuck with i's blocky style forever, and never got any visual changes, though the integration isn't as off as I thought. Steve and the others still feel weird, but a bit more distinct than out of place, especially with the builder options.

Pretty fun reveal, and it'll get people talking. Minecraft's always been popular, and it's just a solid game. I'm hoping I'll get some franchises I'm into next time (I'd be down with only Nintendo characters from here on out) but this was satisfying. Just not looking forward to the salt fest that'll come up online...

I have called it when this game came out I have wanted steve forever and it now happening i'm soo happy I never did jump up from my seat like that in months He is my knew main, also can we just talk about that remix music It just frecken great. Four years ago I might have been annoyed by Minecraft Steve as a character in Smash, but now that I've played the game, I can appreciate it's brilliance even if I'm not a huge fan. You can't ignore the fact that this is the most successful video game of all time, and in just eleven years I think Minecraft Steve can be said to be iconic in the same way that Mario, Sonic and Pac-Man are. I also happen to think that Minecraft's music is stunning, and its worlds lend themselves to a unique looking and functioning stage for Smash. So long story short, I think this is a great addition.

Also, Minecraft Steve and Claire Redfield/Leon Kennedy were the two character additions that I thought were near-certain, so that's one half down. I'm still holding a sliver of hope for my beloved Goemon!

This is probably the most significant Smash addition of them all

IF I was going to buy the 2nd DLC pack! Neither of the choices thus far have enticed me to purchase.

It would take a Waluigi-sized reveal for me to spring for the DLC at this point.

I haven't been able to see the video yet, but I feel like Sakurai cannot be too enthused about adding these charas to Smash.

Not a Minecraft fan myself but I'm perfectly fine with this addition. As a programmer, I'm fascinated by their dedication. Nothing seems to be out of bounds. They'll go as far as rework their entire framework to allow block placement during gameplay. That must have resulted in many headaches.

@graysoncharles Ice Climbers wasnt a high selling series, nor was Kid Icarus but these are iconic characters that FIT the smash universe. Minecraft is mostly played in first person, the characters dont speak or perform any kind of distinctive actions. Minecraft is a great game but their characters aren't.

The complaints of Steve having “no personality” are silly. The stoicism in Minecraft is a deliberate style choice and Sakurai seems to have captured that perfectly while adding monstrous amounts of variety and functionality to the character and the stage. Given Minecraft’s massive popularity (being the highest selling game of all time) and its ties to Nintendo (a Mario crossover set) and support of the Switch, this inclusion makes absolute sense from the standpoint of marketing, video game history and representation. I’m excited to see them in action, as they look like they’re going to being some wildly new stuff to the table.

From the point of view that Smash is a celebration of video games, Steve is a top-ten inclusion, at the very least.

My 3 month old fetus will love to be able to a see a video game he's never laid his eyes on yet.

I don't really think the character fits, Steve is barely a character to begin with, he's just an avatar for the player to interact with the world of Minecraft. I'm sure Sakurai will make sure it works, it just seems out of place to me.

Steve is essentially Kirby 2.0 because now that he's added, Sakurai not only has to rework the entire game for Steve's sake, but also every single DLC addition moving forward has to be reworked from the ground up for him.

Remember, every new DLC fighter gets a new map, and every map has to be retooled from the ground up to accommodate Steve's blocks and all his mechanics.

Not at all what I expected but great. I'm not a fan of Minecraft but I'll give him a shot.

Yeah, the game is iconic... but you might as well put a Minecraft tree instead.

The face...the body.... the null personality.... the way it moves.... it’s an abomination to character design.

This may not be some players cup of tea but it will help drive some DLC sales or copy sales for sure this holiday. This gets a huge demographic, kids.

Gotta admit, will fully acknowledge that I'm being "salty" but as someone with a personal distaste for Minecraft, this is the first time I've been completely underwhelmed by a Smash Bros. fighter.
I mean, I get from a marketing standpoint how it makes sense considering that Minecraft is one of the most popular games ever and I'm happy for fans of it but on a personal level, I just feel nothing.

Reading these comments... Wow. I'm very surprised to see such a distaste for Minecraft in Smash. What people need to realize is, Steve was many many kids first "Mario". And that Minecraft is just as pivotal a game to the minds of current-day teenage gamers as Pokemon/Mario was to me. When looking at the Video Game Hall of Fame, you'd have to be higher than a kite to say Minecraft isn't a top tier placement in there.

If Smash Bros didn't already have other incredible gaming icons, and Steve was added, that'd be one thing. But as soon as I saw DLC being added to Ultimate I thought it was pretty much a lock that he'd be in.

Minecraft is massive among some people, so it makes sense. Not for me though.
Next one I think will be the Monster Hunter, close to the Rise release date.

I'd also like to see Rayman, Crash Bandicoot and Travis Touchdown in the future.

I love they added Steve from Minecraft. Minecraft is a HUGE IP from Microsoft. And bringing it to Smash is a very big step for Nintendo.

As someone who hasn't played FEThree Houses, Byleth was a huge disappointment. Somehow though, everyone on here wasn't nearly as mad even though it was like the 6th FE character.

Really though... I will be first in line to protest Fortnite in Smash. That's the IP I legitimately hate.

@sanderev Probably because it's a blocky stick figure (I'd compare it to a LEGO-minifig, but those are way more expressive) that looks utterly out of place with the rest of the characters.

Sakurai also seemed displeased with it too, which actually makes it annoy me more, the whole thing had a "The top brass said..."-vibe to it, you know, along the lines of "Stick that character in the game, the kiddies love Minecraft!"...

It's virtually impossible to please everyone or even a majority. Just looking at comments anytime there's been a new release are mostly everyone writing who they want in Smash. It's always such a mixed bag ranging from a well known character to a underground character.

Based on Sakurai mentioning Nintendo, 'glasses', and wizardry in his debrief, it sure seemed like he was hinting at Kamek for Season Pass 2, or perhaps even the next character.

i still think minecraft character in smash is a joke at least wasnt another fire emblem character but that being said sakura better not waste the last 4 spots please bring ryu for ninja gaiden,doomslayer from doom,mythra from xenoblade 2,and travis touchdown from no more heroes.

I've always thought a Big Daddy from Bioshock would be perfect for Smash. Drill and Plasmids all day long.

okay let's just say this is the most obvious DLC character. Everyone knew he would come and also everyone kept on guessing it was going to be him. Another thing Minecraft is a popular game, so duh he will arrive.

Great news, there’s a lot of potential for a great move set here. Also nice to see another non Japanese developed character. I keep hoping this gives Master Chief or Doom Slayer a chance.

I hope they add characters from: Clash of Clans, Roblox, Garena Free Fire, League of Legends, PUBG and Candy Crush Saga next.

I mean, if it's all about popularity and millions of people playing, not whether the characters have any soul or personality, these are all viable candidates for games to consider next.

For myself: couldn't care less.
For others: happy for Minecraft fans and it is a deserving character.
For future: very, very concerned this means Fortnite actually has a chance to be in this Fighters Pass if it's all about game sales now.

Can't wait for people to be disappointed over Minecraft in Smash, but lost their minds over Banjo Kazooie.

Not a Minecraft fan but this is an awesome pick! Whatever anyone feels, it can't be Debbie's Minecraft is one of the biggest games in history, and deserved main roster representation ages ago!

Find it crazy they actually fixing the character the ability to build stuff in the middle of any stage map!

Wonder if every one of these characters is considered a Shadow Fither with minor move differences. Fact they introduced 4 and not 8 makes me think this is not just simple skin swaps.

@MysticX One of the things that concerns me is if Nintendo starts overruling Sakurai and forcing the issue on certain characters.

Like for example, take Goku from Dragon Ball. One of the most popular characters in all media and an icon whose franchise pulls in tons of money. The game rights are also held by Namco Bandai who has a close relationship with Nintendo.

Suppose Namco and Toei start pushing Nintendo to add Goku to Smash since they stand to make tons of money and the news of him being added will eclipse any other third-party that has been added in terms of hype, even Cloud, Snake, and Sonic.

So, Goku appears as a DLC fighter despite Sakurai's long-standing rule that he would never allow fighters to join smash that debuted in media outside of Video Games, which Goku does not meet that requirement.

My point is, I hope Steve was Sakurai's own choice and not just something that was forced on him by Nintendo. Because if Nintendo is starting to force fighters to be added due to popularity and sales, then it could open Pandora's Box for anyone to toss Nintendo tons of cash to add someone to Smash.

What worries me is if the other DLC fighters weren't selling as good as Nintendo wanted, and now they are starting to force the issue.

That's kinda the issue with someone like Travis Touchdown, he sounds cool on paper and has his fans, but will casual fans drop money to own him?

They need to have at least 2 iconic characters that aren't just part of some business deal opportunity. I also think we should be careful in assuming what went behind the decision making in this. Sure, Sakurai told us a story and I don't doubt it happened that way in some fashion. Doesn't mean Nintendo forced him or gave him an ultimatum in some nefarious scheme

This is a real gen z pick. Kids outta love this. Can't say I ever considered this guy. I've only tried playing a bit if Minecraft but after 30 hours it didn't click. You can make stuff out of ugly looking blocks to make bigger structures made of those blocks. Its more legos than gaming. If this is the game that introduced the everything breaking after you craft it mechanic then a big "ugh" from me. Otherwise I don't care. I get that it's HUGE tho so it makes sense to add. Just indifferent to it. I could have just read this announcement online and moved on. I'm just thinking about the next one now.

Minecraft is literally a game of the decade. Seriously it auto filled as I type this. I get if it was a throw away like Fortenite or League of Legends. This is a title on the level of Mario or Tetris. I respect that it gets put along side as Pac Man and Sonic as contemporaries. You people are nuts not to understand it.

The signs have been cropping up for awhile now, but today cemented it: I truly am no longer the target demographic of anything related to gaming.

Minecraft came out when I was thirty, and as I never had kids, I never got into it. I watched my Gen Z nephew and nieces act like it was the second coming of Christ and all I could do was shrug with a disinterested meh at its ascension.

We're not going to get Jason from Blaster Master or Crono from Chrono Trigger or hell, even Miria from Guardian Legend.

Those days are long gone.

Really glad I didn't buy either Season Passes, though. The Dragon Quest Hero was fine, but the others have been misses for me.

@MsRobophile I think what you're really trying to get at is that you (or those of us of a certain age) are no longer the only targeted demographic of anything related to gaming. And in all honesty, we shouldn't be. The only way this medium is going to grow is to keep looking for ways to get younger players playing and involved. Doesn't mean it is or has to be at the expense of veteran gamers. As someone who considers themselves a veteran gamer, I can't say I ever felt that I am being pushed out of it.

I also don't think its a matter of having to have had kids or being a young person to have grown an appreciation for Minecraft. I'm sure there are many gamers who didn't and still probably don't have children and who were 30 and older when Minecraft made its ascension

I seriously thought Steve was just gonna be a meme, not that he'd actually end up as a playable fighter. I thought that maybe he would get a Mii costume or something, like Sans (the other meme). But I actually think this was a good pick. I understand that people might not like it, but I think it's hilarious. He will definitely be banned from competitive, but if you're just having fun with family/friends, it's gonna be great I think. Kind of weird that you can place blocks on the stage and change the layout, but it's not like they could have added Steve without him being able to place blocks. Again, great for messing around, will be hated by competitive.

I'm glad Steve is in, long deserving slot, wouldn't want those slots to be wasted by any one-shot puppets or anything like that!

Idk why people don't buy all of the fighters passes. Even if it's a character that you don't like, it's a chance to play as a whole new fighter. I wasn't very excited about Piranha Plant, but I wanted as many characters as possible, and I love his moveset! (Not mad at anybody, just voicing my opinion)

Well there are still 4 slots left in DLC Pack 2, so there is hope yet I'll invest. Minecraft and ARMs just don't have $30 worth of appeal to me, that's all.

I'm happy for the many Minecraft players excited about the announcement. Smash is a huge game and there's plenty of room for inclusion in there.

OK I get it. Smash is at this stage a sort of Hall of Fame for videogames.

I guess I can't be surprised at people being disappointed. Every new character is a disappointment to many.

Meanwhile, this is almost a necessary addition. If this is supposed to include important video game characters, this set from Minecraft, maybe the top game in sales — in the entire history of video games (second to Tetris probably) — is a no brainer. Not to mention all the game play variety potential that is added by the character.

The mains are kind of a blank slate avatar for players, but they are representative of the core activities in the game and are iconic. They will be iconic for decades to come, so it would have been a huge omission if they ignored it.

well, that was a nice surprise. I dont even play minecraft, but this sure is quite the hype 3rd party rep that i feel the pass needed. It does make me worry about Reimu not being a part of it anymore, but at least its not a FE character, am i right? xP

Still not bought season 2 pass. Steves inclusion has made me not want too get it still. Looks like I may end up buying the characters rather then the pass at this stage.

No one will see this because I’m so late but, ah classic smash fans. Complaining about every. Single. Fighter. People saying he has no character is kind of the point, and I think the feels the exact same as he does in Minecraft. Minecraft was the first real game I played besides Mario, a lego game, or Wii sports so I really hold it close to my heart. I really haven’t got exited for a smash reveal until this one, and I got to admit, this is the first dlc fighter I’m buying, so the marketing strategy worked on me lol.

I don't even care about Minecraft but this looks like fun. Definitely an interestingly different character.

Totally agree with this point, and even though he will be a dream pick for many, the look of him does not go at all well with the game, no doubt the developer has done wonders with his inclusion but still, glad he is optional.

Guess this means that Goku and Shrek have a chance of getting in Smash as well.

I don’t get the salt. Every new character is something new to experience in a fun game I enjoy playing. Minecraft is an icon from gaming that goes beyond just gaming. The game is truly a great playing experience.
Older people might feel like they are too old for Minecraft but then again, my Dad has put in hundreds of hours into the game and he’s in his 60s.
Hipsters might not like Minecraft because it is popular but there are legitimate reasons why the series is so popular and remains so after such a long time.
Some high brow folks might not think that Steve graphically fits in Smash but he completely works for the same reason Mr Game & Watch works. Even in the trailer they play on the stiffness of the character and how lifeless he looks. His movement is sharp a deliberate. The rigidity is played up for the comedy of it.
Seriously, if you’re mad about Minecraft being included in Smash then you must have a difficult time having fun.

I'm not one for buying DLC, like, I only have 1 time I think ever, and that was because it came bundled in when I bought whatever game it was.

This dude is not enticing me to make an exception. First two characters in this set are not exactly exciting. I can't remember the last time I saw anyone talk about Arms on my Twitter feed, and got plenty of Switch love on there.

I'm sure this will make some happy, but it's a big head scratcher for me.

Never played Minecraft, but I'd say it's a good character inclusion. I'm nigh in my 30s and just haven't tried it, weird people could think it's not a good idea though. Creative moveset and a HUGE game.

and as for people talking about it being DLC...yeah well, I bought the DLC characters I want and left the ones I don't. I'll maybe buy them when I have spare cash kicking about.

Well, there are 4 more character slots, so perhaps they they will put other requested characters that will appeal more to the ones that don't like Steve. I alredy got most of my favorites characters so one character that don't appeal to me isn't going to ruin my Smash experience.

Normally I can take or leave people’s opinions on this stuff but. WOW. It’s Minecraft, one of the most loved things gaming has ever produced, hell its been top ten in Japan since it released on Switch. This is definitely a case of ignoring the grumbling segment and basking in the love its recieved.

I kinda grew up with Minecraft, and it holds a special place in my heart even if I don't play it as often as I used to. That being said, I'm not too happy with this character inclusion. To be honest, I don't even know if you could consider Steve a "character", he's really more of a player avatar akin to the miis. However, the miis fit Nintendo's aesthetic, have three distinct playstyle variations and can even wear different costumes. Steve is just a generic interpretation of a human with no personality whatsoever. In my opinion, he won't really add anything to the game except for broken mechanics. Oh well, I'm glad that so many people are happy about it, I mean Minecraft IS one of the most popular games of all time, and hey, at least he's not another fire emblem character. 😂

I know it sounds petty, but this was honestly the worst possible character that could have come to Smash for me. Just his existence alone basically rules out that we will ever get Master Chief (I'm sure there wont be another Microsoft rep), Crash Bandicoot (if there was a moment for him to be revealed, this would have been it), and Shantae (or any other indie rep for that matter since Minecraft is technically indie). Those 3 were my top characters that I've ever wanted in Smash. Chief to represent Microsoft and the second most popular game to revolutionize console FPS games. Crash to represent Sony, along with being Mario and Sonic's rival in the 90s. And Shantae just because she's my favourote indie character and would have an awesome moveset. All my hopes blasted out of existence for a character in a series that I wonder if more people watch let's plays of, rather than actually play themselves. I'm crushed.

Yeah, I'm really disliking fighter pass 2 so far. The four remaining characters need to be amazing. I'd suggest, 1) Sora (with Roxas, Aqua, King Mickey, Terra, Ventus, Riku, and Kairi as skins); if Disney still doesn't want to play ball, we can substitute in Jill Valentine (with Sheva, Chris, and Claire as skins) 2) Rex and Pyra/Mythra 3) Chun Li, and 4) Lara Croft.

This is not a bad pick, Minecraft is very popular and Steve looks like a solid fighter.

I get that people are salty that someone they wanted to see added to the roster failed to get in. I wanted Ryu Hayabusa or the Prince of Persia to be a DLC fighter.

But this is a great pick given Minecraft's importance to gaming and how Steve's kit is nothing like we've seen in Smash before.

Fine, maybe people wanted Travis Touchdown to make it in. But to act like this is a horrible pick and make up a bunch of crap about how Minecraft does not deserve to be in Smash is sad.

Yeah, maybe Nintendo also chased after the money on this one. But there is no doubting Minecraft's popularity, and I can see him being one fo the better selling DLC fighters in the game.

I remember hearing rumours about this character joining the roster some time ago, but I never thought they would work as a playable character. I want to see how it works, but the good thing was that it was a big surprise.

Also your question of, "what does Wii Fit Trainer, Isabelle, Duck Hunt have to do with Smash Bros", can be translated to "what do these Nintendo creations have to do with a Nintendo Fighting Game based off Nintendo things?" Can you figure out the answer for that yourself, or do you need help?

@MsRobophile ...half (well, just under half now) of the DLC revealed thus far are nostalgia picks from the 90's and 80's, and K. Rool, Ridley, and the Castlevania protagonists can arguably be lumped in the same boat, so I'm not sure the point being made here

Out of the millions of characters only 4 more will get in, so the chances of who you want getting in are VERY slim. Just yesterday everyone and there parents loved Minecraft, and today everyone hates it. They are supposed to be a surprise that you would never expect. Now if Waluigi get in, the collection will be complete.

It's just weird when you realize an entire generation idolizes a character who came into popularity three decades into your life. Minecraft still seems like a newfangled thing to me and it's eleven years old.

Not sure why this character is getting so much hate. Minecraft is ICONIC in the video game industry.

And people saying he doesn't fit into Smash's style, or he looks bland? THAT'S EXACTLY HOW HE LOOKS IN HIS ORIGINAL GAME. Character styles don't need to be revamped to fit in. Most of the ones that were changed for Smash were outdated or 2D figures.

I woke up a few months ago and realized RPGs now star people young enough to be your nearly-grown children. That was surreal.

Then I realize this has been a long process in the making. Pokemon was the first huge see-change in gaming that I missed the boat on, having been entering college right around the time it rose to prominence.

Minecraft definitely failed to register on my radar. I knew grown people who tinkered with it a little, but the real enthusiasts all seemed to be Gen Z kids.

I'm not even saying it's bad they added the Minecraft guy. Kids love him. But it does make me feel old and irrelevant.

I kind of feel bad for Sakurai because he basically has to do whatever the big wigs want. Sure it makes sense but IMHO, Minecraft doesn't belong in Smash. I do kinda wish they’d adjusted the visuals a little to make it more in keeping with smash’s aesthetic, as every other character has had that, but I think this is a great inclusion!

Minecraft isn’t for me, I’ve tried it and found it the opposite of fun truthfully, but it’s huge and many love it. It’s impact on the medium of video games is undeniable, plus closer to home it represents a time when Xbox and Nintendo shook hands and teamed up for the players, which was awesome!

Plus the moveset looks unique and fun!
Hopefully the next fighter will be a bit simpler to add and more fun for Sakurai....and Crash Bandicoot.

@shoeses So is Duck Hunt Dog and Wii Fit Trainer frankly. They aren't playable characters in their respective titles and they don't have distinct personalities either! The Pac Man and Mega man and Mr. Game and Watch that Smash is using don't have personality either! And it's a Nintendo fighting game? Well you could say that was true maybe a couple of decades ago! Many new characters coming into the game are third party fighters! It's more than a Nintendo Fighting Game. Now it's a Video Game All Stars Fighting Game and Steve is a Video Game All Star!

@JereJK Well said. Definitely a better choice than Byleth, overall, considering the overall impact Minecraft has had on indie games and pop culture in general. Byleth came from a great game, in a fantastic franchise (that I haven't yet gotten the chance to try), but literally 99% of those who people say they'd "rather have" in the game instead of Steve are either more obscure, less impactful, or still icons in their own right but can't beat the king. Like, Ryu Hayabusa is cool, but most of those playing Smash haven't heard of him (still hope he gets in, personally, though!). Crash Bandicoot I see as an exception to this, but obviously compared to Minecraft even he hasn't had the same exposure. Smash is a CELEBRATION OF GAMING, and this is the one pick in the roster that I think demonstrates that point really well! Those who are hating are just biased against the game without trying it or fail to see just how legendary of a moment this is for Smash as a video-game museum of sorts.

@Bizzyb i agree plus doomslayer deserves to be in smash as well since all the doom games are on the switch plus maybe the reason why they delayed the switch version of doom eternal will not just polish it up even more maybe they ll reveal doomslayer as the next character while revealing the release date for the game not getting my hopes but still it could happen

From my point of view, no one truly "deserves" to get in Smash. They can all get in, as long as they properly originate from a video game and have good enough moveset potential (which Steve certainly does have, so I don't quite think it's too high of a bar either).

I was freaking out in orchestra. My teacher asked me if i was ok. Thankfully he didnt get pissed cuz he is a gamer and was as excited as i was. Everyone else was just confused. Some of my friends understood why i was going mental while playing gargoyles.

I've never played minecraft in my life and now I just feel old, though I should be use to it I'm not familiar with any of the anime characters they added either

@Franklin Will people give the "Oh god, not another sword user." thing a rest already? Most video game characters are going to have swords as their main weapons(even if they can use other weapons in their home games) or swords are their most famous weapon that often factors into the plot.

Yes, we get it, Smash has numerous fighters that use swords. And barring Marth/Roy and the clones they spawned, none of the sword fighters fight nothing alike.

Even the two Magic-Based Swordfighter in Robin and Hero are different since Robin uses the Durability System from Fire Emblem and Hero uses a magic system with MP like in the Dragon Quest games.

Some sword fighters like Ganondorf don't even use it as their main weapon. Ganon is still a brawler and only brings out the sword for his Smash Attack which makes him less like Falcon.

My point is, Steve has a sword. What does it matter? Does the rest of his kit not matter because he's a sword fighter?

Why is there such a backlash against sword fighters in Smash Bros? This has been a complaint dating back to Smash Wii U/3DS.

Honestly, I have characters that I actually like less, but it's just the fact that Steve will most likely bar off my favourite characters that feels the most devastating. I realize this is entirely personal though, and I'm sure there are a lot of people beaming at this, and I'm not trying to take anything away from them. @Entrr_username maybe impossible is the wrong wording. More like extremely unlikely. Since Steve is a Microsoft and an indie rep, I doubt those categories will be pursued again in Fighters Pass 2 with Master Chief and Shantae. And since Crash 4 releases tomorrow, I believe that this reveal would have been his best chance of making it in.

Personally, I would've preferred either Crash (who just released a new title) or even Travis Touchdown as the playable character, and have the Minecraft character as a special Mii Fighter Costume, but I guess Nintendo really wanted a Minecraft playable character *shrugs * so I guess this is what we're stuck with.

Feh, another wasted character slot. The higher-ups bullying Sakurai to add this in should get kicked out. Minecraft is cringy and highly irrelevant now and had barely even half a decade where it was quote-unquote "popular" before rightfully being mocked and laughed at for how much it oversaturated itself on not only Youtube, but the Internet as a whole. Consider me exponentially unimpressed, unamused and overall just disgusted.

As somebody who never played Smash I always thought it looks like chaos. This just adds to that feeling big time.

Been reading through comments throughout he day and I must say its sad to know that i've been so happy for all the people begging for banjo, hero, joker, etc despite having never played those series, heck, I'm just happy to get new characters, yet when they add something that my generation in particular is nostalgic for, everyone starts whining like they've ruined the game.

Two other things.
1) it isnt a new or trend game at this point, it's 11 years old
2) Everyone complaining that steve is a blank avatar keeps forgetting villager, or the fact that many characters like duck hunt or wii fit trainer alone dont have too much personality and instead are more a rep of their game as a whole. in this way, steve is a rep of minecraft as a whole

Maybe because I just don't have the patience for creative sandbox games, I never got into Minecraft. But I know the franchise is a big hit so I am happy for the fans who been requesting him for a long time. Steve really was one of those characters like Altair or Banjo who was frankly, annoyingly requested on almost any message board for years (probably since Minecraft hype really started) Years of denial yet here they are like some serial dream. What does make me interested in playing him though is that this is another character that the devs had to think of an out-the-box way to adapt him properly for this game. What's cool about Smash Bros is that the characters are given an extra level of detail with their movesets that make them feel they came straight from the ir home series While in other games, guest characters may have to have their properties altered to fit this game's combat style, characters can translate surprisingly well into Smash Bros. Something like the way Mega Man's moves or giving Hero a command deck does sell this off.

Ugh. I'm not at all interested in Minecraft, so this is a little disappointing. But it'll probably make the kids happy and maybe sell like 8 billion more copies of this game. Oh well, it could have been worse... but I still wish Nintendo would include more Nintendo characters in their all-Nintendo game. At least I got Min Min out of the deal.

Wow! Can't believe all the dissapointement in the comments. I'm not a Minecraft fan at all but even I'm excited for Steve in Smash. He's a perfect fit for the roster of gaming icons. And folks saying his look doesn't fit, what about Mr Game & Watch?

Remember back in the day when the third party reveals were ACTUALLY meaningful and not just appealing to a certain demographic just to boost sales? Remember Snake and Sonic back in Brawl and the MASSIVE cheer they received? Remember when in Sm4sh the first third party reveals were so masterfully selected and meant something other than a quick cash grab, like Mega Man and Pac Man? Yeah, me neither.

I get it....it's an iconic, generation defining game. Every kid is consumed by it, etc. But ick.

Also, at this point, can we just get Game Pass and xCloud clients on Switch and make my whole XBox library cross compatible? I have more Microsoft products on my Switch than my XBox at this point.

@FRANKLIN_BADGE Listen, I think ur missing something here. Yes it is the best selling game in the world, it's popular with little kids, and microsoft bought it, but calling Minecaft a cash grab is a bit unfair. The game is over a decade old at this point and it still retains a large userbase so clearly it's got some validity for smash. Oh yeah also the game started with a team of two people so it's base intent certainly wasnt a cash grab (kinda dont like the "marketplace" MS recently implemented though). Comparing it to fortnite (which is still a fun game) is unfair for the reasons I listed above in addition to the fact that fortnite started as a much different thing; an attempt at a long standing project failed so to cash in on it, devs for a massive company decided to implement a f2p battle royale with purchasable skins and battle passes, so despite being enjoyable, it fits the "cash grab" descriptor much better

@Ccc85 Are you stuck in 2002? Super Smash Brothers isn’t purely Nintendo any longer! Now it’s a fighting game featuring the greatest video game characters of all time from many franchises! I just bring up Wii Fit Trainer, Duck Hunt, and Isabelle because you wouldn’t normally see them in a fighting game. So if they can be in Smash Bros, why not Steve? The PAC Man and Megaman in Smash Bros don’t have a personality so why is it suddenly a problem when Steve gets added???

Lol at people complaining about people not liking this Fighter choice. Many people commented that they are happy for the ones who did like the decision however so why are you calling them out? Not everyone must like this just because the franchise is big. We're not sheep and you're not the shepherd. We can like something just as we can not like something else. Stop it.

The problem I have with Minecraft's Steve and friends being represented in Smash is that Nintendo and Sakurai are doing exactly what they should have never done in the first place: Try to please the fanboys.

The same fanboys who were pestering Nintendo for AGES to include characters like Geno and Banjo-Kazooie since the Melee days. The same salty fanboys who are crying every day because Waluigi stayed an assist trophy. A side character that was mostly designed as a surplus.

Smash Brothers WAS mainly and primarily a Nintendo fighter, with some special guests since the Brawl days, like Sonic and Snake. But we have come to the point where ALMOST ANYONE can get into Smash.

The days when Shrek and Goku being in Smash memes were laughable and idiotic? More and more like reality now.

And game and watch doesn’t even have a face. PAC-MAN is pretty much just a yellow circle. Duck hunt is just a cartoony duck. Steve is an avatar. I like to call this character “Minecraft” because he is just a portal for Minecraft representation. He is a very good choice.

@FRANKLIN_BADGE There is no proof that Nintendo chose to include Minecraft just to please fanboys. No one knows what goes on in their meetings. The most likely reason they chose Steve is because they were looking at what games/characters represent video gaming as a whole and are iconic in the industry.
