It's official, the open-world action-adventure Immortals Fenyx Rising (formerly known as Gods & Monsters) is coming to the Nintendo Switch on 3rd December. It seems that the Microsoft Store listing from last week was correct.
As previously noted, this new IP - "taking grand mythological adventure to new heights" - has been developed by the team at Ubisoft Quebec (Assassin's Creed Odyssey). Players take control of Fenyx, a new winged demigod who must save the Greek gods and their home from a dark curse.
Here's a bit more from the official PR, along with some screens and a gameplay walkthrough:
Only by mastering the legendary powers of the gods, overcoming heroic trials and confronting powerful mythological beasts, will Fenyx be able to take on Typhon, the deadliest Titan in Greek mythology.
An exhilarating experience for all heroes at heart, the game features dynamic action gameplay, fast-paced aerial and melee combat and stories inspired by Greek mythology. Players will face off against mythological creatures like the Cyclops, Minotaur and Medusa. With the help of the Sword of Achilles, Bow of Odysseus and Wings of Daidalos, players will launch themselves up into the air to deal with the immensity of these creatures. In addition to combat, players’ logic and strategy will be challenged by world puzzles, from small scale individual puzzles all the way up to the epic Vaults of Tartaros.
Immortals Fenyx Rising is an uplifting and witty take on the open world action adventure genre and is full of rewarding exploration through dynamic traversal. Sprint across open fields, climb enormous mountains, and glide through the skies to discover all the secrets of the seven unique regions inspired by the Greek Gods across the Golden Isle.
In Immortals Fenyx Rising, players will be able to make Fenyx their own with a wide range of customization options available. Progression is varied, centered on the Hall of the Gods where players can upgrade Fenyx’s health, stamina or god-given abilities. In addition to upgrading Fenyx, the weapons, armor, and potions used can also be enhanced by defeating enemies and opening chests throughout the world.
The journey will be as challenging and rewarding as the destination, and players will emerge as the heroes they are meant to become.

Save the gods? Christ, why would we do that? In the words of Kirk, “Let them die.”
@aznable Fenyx is a bit of a bootlicker. The gods are all sociopaths.
@nessisonett To the surprise of no one, right?
Save the gods, destroy the demons
Looks pretty fun.
So is that gonna be a series (aka. new IP) based on the name change?
Immortals: Phoenix Rising
Immortals: Rising Harder
Immortals with a Vengeance
Looks awesome, always nice to see a new IP from Ubisoft.
@aznable Maybe there will be an optional Dark Souls-esque "Walk away, embrace the darkness" ending.
Watched some current build gameplay today. It looks aggressively ok.
BTW: on Reddit a lot of people complain (duh!) about the schizophrenic choice of music.
I actually like it. It clearly doesn't fit, but gives it a bit of it's own personality and attitude because of it.
Have been looking forward to this one since first time I saw it but it's Ubisoft so it will be $30 by February and I just pre-ordered HW: AOC so it can wait. Already waited 10 months since it's original release date in February.
Looks pretty blah to me. Nothing here to make me bite.
If you’re gonna go for the BOTW crowd, you gotta bring something pretty unique to the table. Not seeing it here.
Looks kind of cool, but hope it’s not as grindy as ac odyssey
Whoever picked the music should be shot from a cannon.
sssooo....is that a guy or a girl?
Looks siiiick. Even has the botw anime-style run. Gee, look at that neat-o gannon-possessed-castle draped in evil red. I'm into it.
@DK-Fan Yeah, looks like a girl? Right? haha I was wondering the same thing. I like it, if it's a girl.
@DK-Fan oh, the second video confirms the main character Fenyx is a girl.
I'll see how the Switch version runs before I pick a platform to get it on.
But, CAN WE CLIMB EVERYTHING!? Can we?
EDIT: That gameplay walkthough seems like it's giving away all the surprises for combat. Killing the joy of discovery.
Wow, they really were aiming for BOTW with this, not a bad thing.
@DK-Fan I was also wondering the same thing. The character in the video is a girl but you can choose either a male or female character which you can customise.
Day 1! Wonder if there’ll be a special edition. Getting for Switch but I’m also treating myself to a ps5 for the holidays since I’ve worked nonstop through the pandemic, so guess I’ll be double dipping
Uh, wow. That trailer felt like a punch in the face. What awful music they chose. The character's extra-wide eyes aren't doing anything for her overall look. I guess this is a grab at people that like BOTW?
It looks absolutely awesome. Im all in.
It looks really good, now I just hope there are no trailing missions
Nice trailer, but how much of that was actual gameplay? I'll wait to see reviews, loved Mario x Rabbids, ended up buying Star Link and just couldn't bring myself to care for it, so I'm a little hesitant on Ubisoft titles going forward.
@lightranger7060
It probably will be so ugh, they wanna be like BOTW but they won’t try to copy the brilliant way it handles simple stat progression that avoided having to constantly toss out equipment.
@DavidMac Further down in the article, there is also a gameplay video. I think the gameplay video probably gives away too much of the combat. Like there's nothing left to discover, like they're spoiling the progression. The great thing about botw was earning & disocovering all the powers, or finding elemental weapons, because they weren't shown in the trailer videos.
The true question is: will the Switch version be upgradable to PS5 or do we need to wait for the ultimate edition? Oh... Wrong game and wrong console.
Game looks super cool though, I'll probably get it on PS4 because we all know how Switch versions of multiplatform games run like crap.
@aznable Kratos helps bringing balance. Fenyx hasn't even been released and I already want a crossover!
Gods, what a terrible name change...
I was half convinced of this BotW wannabe in spite of it's uninspired art direction but the new name dragged the whole package to LameHades
Basically BotW x Kid Icarus: Uprising. I can dig that.
If Kratos existed in a brighter more BotW universe...and was a female.
@DK-Fan Actually there is a character creator in the game. But you'll need to watch the "Ubisoft Forward" to see that.
https://youtu.be/McGgmtH0KMY?t=4851
I think I will get this game on PC and maybe on Switch if the game is good and the Switch version is decent enough.
Man, I'm gutted PoP isn't coming tot he Switch. Wth???
The trailer didn't show much but there are already hands-on gameplay videos out there
I'm not so sure if I like the cartoony over the top style, also the narrators are kinda annoying, but gameplay-wise looks good, at least movement and combat could be fun (the puzzles look pretty simple and filler-like though)
is it me or the mechanics of this game which by the way looks great in the gameplay are a little similar to ZBOTW?
i mean, i don't want to spend 50 euros on a ripoff...
the stamina bar, the dodging, open world, wings instead of the glider, bow & arrow, idk it looks a bit too much like BOTW.
Greek BoTW. Meh. Nothing really interests me. Even the combat seems pretty lackluster. At least with BoTW the engine could let you do some weird/interesting things with combat. This feel a bit too hack and slashy without a rewarding system to compensate for it.
Looks kinda thrown together, y’know?
Looks good. Reckon this is an Xbox purchase though.
Depending on a few trusted reviews this will trump Hyrule Warriors for me.
I guess nobody in the comment section played Breath of the Wild, as Immortals is a hell of a BOTW rip off....cant you see it?
Looks good, like a remastered version of BOTW. Will wait for reviews and potentially a sale before i invest. If the Switch version is anywhere near as good as the others, that'll be where i play.
@Skoffo it even has shrines and Malice ha
Am I the only one that actually loves the look of it? Lol. The trailer is terrible, indeed, but guys, look at the gameplay video! An ambitious open world adventure game based on the greek mythology with a Zelda style? I'm totally in!!
The trailer got me hyped, love the music and the editing. Beautiful stuff.
But then you see the gameplay videos on YouTube and it looks like a BotW clone, much more than Genshin Impact. I'll probably skip or buy it off the bargain bin.
I don't think that switch version will look as good as they showed. I'm afraid every version won't look that good as they showed.
@DK-Fan @WoomyNNYes if you watch the gameplay pre view then it shows you can create your own character male or female, but the name Fenyx is locked
@BlackenedHalo Breath of the wild borrowed ideas from other Western Rpg's the producer said so himself, so people using ideas from breath of the wild isn't a big problem as its helping create good games.
I've got the last half of breath of the wild to complete, hyrule warriors coming out in November, immortals rise of the Fenyx in December, genshin impact this month and windbound just came out, its a really good year for me and for people who like these seemless open world games
@Skoffo stamina bar?
Dodging?
Open world?
Bow and arrow?
Sounds like 90% of other Rpg's if you ask me
Looks like someone has been copying Nintendo's homework and spliced it together with a typical Ubisoft game. Does look kind of fun though
The game looks amazing and the areas look beautiful, haven't seen much of the combat yet but so far it's definitely a day one buy, dont get the salty people who won't buy this just because it borrows from zelda even though zelda borrowed from other games, it's like they think breath of the wild invented open worlds and the stamina bar 😂
@Yanina
I know, right? When suddenly James Brown kicked in with the Minotaur breaking out and gallopping towards the hero I was like "Wait, WHAT?!!" with a huge grin on my face. So unexpected and so cool. I mean: James Brown! Minotaur! Nuff said!
And I absolutely love what they've done with the remix, the new beat, and mixing it with epic soundtrack music, cutting the trailer to the rhythm. It's seriously cool.
And it's seriously left-field. As you say it gives the game attitude, shows that it doesn't take itself too seriously, which is a cool thing. It's like SHREK, actually. Nobody complained about the music choices there. On the contrary. It was applauded for that. Complainers really are a humorless bunch. I applaude the developer/publisher for this bold and fun choice!
EDIT: The moment of silence, bird's chirping, as the hero walks away after slaying the Minotaur and when Medusa shrieks in unison with James Brown's shout... that's pure, perfetcly timed trailer comedy gold!
@playstation_king https://youtu.be/zWNfVXqYJKk
I was watching this video and there's a lot of BOTW inspired elements, not that this is a bad thing and it looks like they've mashed it together with the recent Assassin's Creed style combat. It does look fun and another game for me to pick up on Switch before the end of the year.
I don't understand the logic of those who say it borrows from a game they like to play so that means they don't want to play this, surely that's more of a reason to play it
Personally I don't think the game looks ready for release as-is, in terms of gameplay. I hope the few months they have left can be used to polish it more. The video showed a lot of issues that need to be taken care of for it to be a quality release, especially in combat.
Unfortunately the game probably goes gold in less than a month, meaning what we just saw is probably what we will get.
Oh well.
@playstation_king that's the thing, man, it's soooo stupid in my opinion... XD. I guess they've never played an Assassins Creed or Far Cry game. BotW borrows a lot of things from games like those, and nobody complained.
@playstation_king What RPGs? First of all, BOTW is not an RPG, second, there is no western RPG/game with such gameplay system. The only thing is the open world which was inspired by Skyrim and other Bethesda's RPGs. There is nothing else "western" about it.
Ugh. The music choice turned me off!!!!
Mr James Brown in a video game. I like it - ants in my pants and I got'ta dance.
What the hell guys, this looks awesome!
That music, great funky mix choice too!
I'm gonna pre-order.
And it's already being labelled a "BotW clone", too. Fans never change.
No telling if I can grab it at launch, but it'll be on my wishlist for sure. "Always has been"(c)
@BlackenedHalo the towers copy from the ubisoft games. There's plenty of games that use a stamina bar not just Rpg's, there's quite a few games that use a weapon break feature before BOTW, cooling has been in many games aswell, only thing BOTW has that's unique are the shrines and gliding
Don’t like the lead character.
When i saw the gameplay i was like wow breath of the wild gameplay with a mixture of kid icarus (in a good way)
I didnt see all of the gameplay ao i hope its possible to make your own character (male/female)
Great looking game .... awful title
@The-Chosen-one yes you can make yourself male or female, blue, green, red or grey skin aswell
@sandman89 you create your own character at the start male or female, different hair styles and skin colours aswell etc
Looks like they just copied breath of the wild with a different story arc.
All Ubisoft games(except Anno 1800)looks fun from first glance. And then outposts and juggernauts come to play.
Ubireath of the Icarus.
I'm eager to try it out, though am hesitant to get too excited because of Ubisoft's penchant for bugginess.
It does look so much like Breath of the Wild though. I'd kinda preferred them to port Watch_Dogs 2 first for a bit of contrast.
@playstation_king oh. Why wasn’t this shown in the trailer 🤷🏻♂️ That’s better
Kid Icarus: Breath of the Wild
Just watched some of the gameplay, and weirdly just got to 3.21 and it looked very much like a shrine, except you fall down a hole instead of using a lift.
But plagiarism has always been around in computer games.
@sandman89 it was shown in the ubisoft event rather than the trailer, this video is better at explain the game
https://youtu.be/phpm8v_uRWs
@aznable someone needs to play SMT V when it comes out lol
Wow now my interest in this game dropped quite a lot. So basically you're an all powerful "avatar of the gods" that have lots of power and kill easily any monster in your path. Oh and look shiny attacks. And horse. And you can fly, isn't that neat? Clearly the game is aiming for an audience that I am not a part of.
@Yanina I also enjoyed the music, really gives the game its own personality and not just another epic song like always. But then again, the trailer itself was pretty 'meh' in my opinion.
Didn't realise how much I missed Kid Icarus until now so I might get this
@carlos82 Like BotW did with Ubisoft games like AC or Far Cry, what's the problem??
Really guys, stop with that.
@Lugazz the cahatcatwr doesn't start off as powerful as the trailer shows and the wings have to be found just like the master sword in zelda,
Watch this instead it's more detailed than the trailer
https://youtu.be/phpm8v_uRWs
@the_beaver yeah the first thing that springs to mind when I play BOTW is Far Cry 🙄
You might want to read my further comments just a tiny bit further down then the one you've reacted to
Maybe I'm weird, but I don't like that the main character is fully customizable. Even a silent protagonist like Link gets some personality by being, well, Link. Yeah, sure, get new clothes or hairstyles, but in games like these I think a recognizable main character does more good than full customization, like in full fledged RPGs. Also first impressions count. Remember when they tried changing default Commander Shepard into a woman for ME3? It was weird and disjointed. Here they started off with a woman, now imagine if they replaced her with some dude for part 2 while maintaining that it's the same Fenyx.
@playstation_king that is totally true but the zelda mechanics are quite recognizable
Will wait for reviews (and price drops) but I think this looks pretty good.
@SmaggTheSmug saying that though I fully expect BOTW2 to add a female playable character, I think most games lime these especially rpgs have to add the male and female option to avoid being sexiest and add diversity, wouldn't surprise me if in a few years theres an option to change links skin colour aswell
How come there isn't a pre-order option for the Gold edition on Switch? Not that the pricing isn't ridiculous, but neither the Ubisofts store nor the game's own pre-order page will let you grab the expanded version for Switch.
@playstation_king The moment Link becomes customizable he stops being Link. Sure, have an option to play as Zelda (or Linkle if you're feeling adventurous), but Link is a specific character with continuity from previous games.
It's not like Pokemon where the player character is just "a trainer" and customization was a long time coming. Link is Link. Sure, there's multiple Links as he reincarnates, but at the end of the day each Link had a defined look. Just like Lara Croft, Kratos, Geralt, Mario etc. I believe a specific character makes a franchise stronger. Full customization is better for games that are more on the RPG/player avatar side of things (Pokemon, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, any MMO) and for action/adventure genre it just makes the main character bland, voiceless.
Also Nintendo is still a Japanese company. American ideas of "diversity" don't apply there. Kingdom Netflix show had a very diverse cast despite all of the characters being Korean, because "diversity" is not skin color.
Long live the Annunaki!
@Jasonmd Came to talk about the music as well. How can anyone thing that is a good fit for this game? I'm constantly baffled by this trend of using famous songs on trailers instead of original music that actually fits the game's atmosphere.
It is very different making the player assume the role of its own in-game avatar vs immerse the player in a specific role @playstation_king of course I wouldn't mind having a Zelda game where we play as the Princess. I would love it! But I also totally agree with @SmaggTheSmug that having a defined character makes the franchise stronger. The character itself becomes a logo, a brand for the franchise to be recognized.
I don't see ever Sonic being customizable, nor Bayonetta, Kratos, Mario, the girl from Horizon Zero Dawn, etc.
Looks fun , wonder if the Switch version will look as good as PS5 version.
@playstation_king Thanks for the video by the way. Unfortunately I felt that I've learned more about the story than gameplay itself hahahahhaha I wish for it to turn out a great game, it's just that I am now with zero hype. For sure I'll read the reviews
I'll wait for reviews before getting this one. As much as I like the flavor text and Greek/Roman Mythology in general, I'm not entirely convinced yet. Plenty of things to play anyway lol.
Seems heavily influenced by AC Odyssey and BOTW (shocker). I loved both games so have no issue with that. Hope it is good, I for one I’m excited for it, but probably will get it for Xbox. Hopefully will have my new shiny series x by then
I never liked BoTW because of its slow pace and a big chunk of the time it just feels like you're playing a climbing simulator
This game looks like it took BoTW and actually made it into a fun game.
@dBackLash You do realize this game will not start with glide abilities and will have low stamina, just like BOTW. So the beginning of the game will force you to climb and manage stamina for exploration. There is no weapon degradation but that mechanic actually forced players to use different weapons and think about using the best weapon for the particular encounter.
The game takes a lot of inspiration from BOTW so you may be disappointed.
@Scollurio 🤔 what? They’ve all gone mate.
Why the name change though? It's hardly a catchy name. I didn't realise it was Phoenix, I was reading it as Fenyx as in Fentanyl hahaha
@tabris95 I will be diving head first into that b!tch. SMT strange journey was one of my favorite time sinks from my DS era.
Looks great to me, but concerned about performance on Switch (the only current gen console I own). It may inspire me to buy another console if the reviews are good enough and the Switch version struggles. I'm guessing the James Brown inspired trailer music won't be the actual in game music.
I'm getting very strong Kid Icarus vibes, and since Nintendo can hardly be bothered to bring it out, or fix its obvious flaws when they do, I am quite interested.
I think it looks cool, especially if it reviews well and does not have major performance issues.
Do you have to play as a female or can you choose a male character too?
It has potential. If the Switch version doesn't get butchered (I mean bad graphics and performance issues) this might just be my Zelda fix this year (And Age of calamity of course, but that's a Warriors game).
And this is quite a thing: A new ip, Zelda inspired no less, from Ubisoft. And on a Nintendo device. Not a small download. Not a port. Not just dance 1001. A fully fledged new Ubisoft retail game, on Switch. Miracles do happen!
