Pga Tour 2k21

Another month slips by in this strange year we're calling 2020, and the video games continue to roll out across platforms. On Switch we saw the release of excellent Paper Mario: The Origami King in July along with the decidedly odd Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise and the return of cult classic Catherine in Full Body mode.

Looking at the lineup for August on Switch, it's certainly slim pickings at the start of the month. That's no problem for us (it gives us time to whittle down our bulging backlog), but the standard summer video gaming drought seems to be in full effect in 2020. We're sure Nintendo will have a juicy little announcement at some point in the coming weeks to quench our thirst--and there are several games with tentative 'Q3' release dates pencilled in--but as things stand it's looking a little dry.

Things are looking up towards the end of the month and into September, though - especially for sports fans. Let's take a look at some of the biggest games coming to Switch in August and September, shall we?

PGA Tour 2K21 - 21st August

Switch is blessed with a host of golf games (or golf-like games), but we're hoping that PGA Tour 2K21 will give us a more authentic spin on the ball sport. It's been a while since the Tour has come to a Nintendo console, and the absence of Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom crew on the Switch fairway means there's a chance for this officially-licensed game to pick up a trophy. We're hoping for good things and it'll be a pleasure to take to the tee in our loudest trousers.

The digital version is out on 21st August, the boxed retail version is due 25th September.

No Straight Roads - 25th August

Sneaking in at the end of August is Sold Out and Metronomik's No Straight Roads, a musical action-adventure romp that sees players fighting their way through a vibrant world using rhythm-infused combat.

It's directed by Wan Hazmer and Daim Dziauddin, lead designer on Final Fantasy XV and concept artist on Street Fighter V respectively. With exclusive touchscreen support, an Assist Mode and 3-player local co-op, the Switch version of this multiplatform title is shaping up to be a fine one. Considering the directing talent, it's definitely worth keeping an eye (and ear) out for this one.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition - 27th August

The remastered return of the multiplayer GameCube hit Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, the original release marked a return to Nintendo consoles for the venerated RPG series back in 2004. This spin-off brought dungeon crawling and action-RPG elements to the table and was played a team of four--each with their own Game Boy Advance connected to the 'Cube.

It was a neat idea, although much like Nintendo's Four Swords Adventure, it required a lot of kit to work optimally, which made it impractical for the average gaming household. It was fine if you had three GBA-owning, Final Fantasy-loving pals, but not everyone did. This remaster adds online multiplayer and cross-play with the PS4 version, hopefully making it a little easier to get a party of heroes together this time.

The western release of the game is eShop only it seems, but you can grab this in a lovely box from our chums at Play Asia.

NBA 2K21 - 4th September

This year's model of 2K's basketball series, we're expecting great things from NBA 2K21. Load times and intrusive microtransactions aside, last year's entry was a winner and we're excited to see if 2K has upped its game this season.

The 'Legend Edition' of this year's entry has been replaced by the 'Mamba Forever' edition in honour of Kobe Bryant, who passed away earlier this year. This more expensive option comes with special MyTeam and MyPlayers bonuses and other extras including the Damian Lillard Digital Collection and Kobe Bryant Digital Collection.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds - 18th September

Okay, we'll put this here for the sake of argument, but it has to be said that WWE 2K Battlegrounds isn't looking brilliant. Featuring over 70 WWE superstars past and present, all in cartoon-y big-head form, this is an over-the-top comedic take of the famously dour, down-to-earth sport of professional wrestling.

Who knows? It could end up being a GOTY contender. We'll be approaching it with an open mind when it releases mid-September - who wouldn't want to see John Cena throwing a Dragon Punch? Still, probably best to wait for the review on this one, unless you're an absolute die-hard fan.

More Awesome Nintendo Switch Games

Aside from the highlighted games above, there are lots more Switch retail games which might take your fancy in August and beyond.
