This week, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is celebrating the 3DS and Wii U entries with a special tournament. Both of these games were released in 2014 and introduced downloadable content to the series for the first time ever.
The upcoming 3DS and Wii U tournament starts this Friday on 24th July and will run for a total of three days. You'll be able to select characters from these particular entries such as Ryu, Wii Fit Trainer, and Little Mac. The stages featured are also from this particular generation of Smash Bros.
Nintendo has also revealed the Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Ring Fit Adventure spirits are no longer limited-time and now are available on the Spirit Board and from the Shop.

Smash 4 really did have the best newcomers in the entire series
A good balance of classic ( duck hunt and ryu ) and modern ( shulk and Bayonetta) fan requests like mega man cloud and little Mac and sooo many surprises along the ride for this game. The Smash 4 hype cycle was something that Sakurai will never be able to match IMO
smash4 was such a flashy game lol im really happy for the creative and innovative newcomers they introduced. still love villager
@Blooper987 to me most of them are kinda forgettable Edit: I admit they’ve added some big names, Those were the ones got the most excitement from me like megaman, pacman and, cloud. And the Wii fit trainer was a very creative choice because she represents a unique part/era of nintendo. Villager was good too. But they also chose alot of forgettable ones that made me remember being more disappointed than excited for this game
@Blooper987
I gotta agree, though I do think Ultimate has had some pretty nice surprises too (Ridley, Banjo, etc).
I still want Smash Run back.
@Freddyfred Yeah. I don't know what that karate guy is doing in Smash at all.
@Olmectron Ryu is the best thing to happen to smash bros. - Old school SF2 player / Ryu main in Smash
@OdnetninAges Super smash bros brawl had the most well rounded additions to the cast to me and supers smash bros ultimate picked that up again
Smash 4 was what endeared me to Bowser Jr, simply because they didn't make him a clone or derivative of his father. It stinks that the competitive circuit saw little to no value for him though.
@OdnetninAges Banjo has been the most hype a 3rd party reveal for me.
@Narrator1 There's better investments for your time than worrying what the competitive Smash community thinks.
He's a very fun character, also has the best Alts. in all of Smash.
@Bermanator Me too. Smash Run is the one thing that would make Ultimate truly "Ultimate" for me. Especially if they added some extra maps and rules options.
When is brawl gonna get love
@Blooper987
Y'know, until Ridley...and Banjo...and Simon...and K. Rool...and every veteran...and the special mii costumes...and replacing trophies with google image pngs
Alright maybe not that last part but you get my point
Play with joycon to simulate authentic 3DS circle pad drift!
@NotoriousWhiz I'm happy with every character in Smash Bros so far. Even the Fire Emblem characters, since I'm a fan since the gamecube games.
I was answering in joke to a user who said most of them were forgettable.
im not a huge fan of most of smash 4's additions to the roster but the ones i love. boy do i Love
For me, it is sadly the other way around. I personally think that SSB for Wii U and 3DS had the most uninteresting character roster. Sure we got some iconic characters like Mega Man, Pacman, Ryu, and Cloud, but also some boring, lame, or questionable ones:
I still think that SSBU has the best newcomers so far. Mostly because Nintendo finally listens to the fans for the most part. People have been asking for years for Ridley, and we got him! Same with Daisy, King K. Rool, and Simon Belmont. Japanese folks wanted the DQ-Hero also for years. And the ygot them, and the European people finally, finally even got their Banjo-Freaking-Kazooie! Banjo-Kazooie in SSB! Finally! And not only that! We also got other iconic characters like Joker and Terry. Maybe we will even get other videogame icons in the second Fighter Pass sich as Crash Bandicoot, Rayman, Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia, Dante, and more.
@RareFan I actually really like all those characters. And I'm happy they are in the game. Especially Bayonetta, Robin, Palutena and Lucina.
Incredible! Some love for the wiiu 🥰
Think I'll participate in this tournament. Haven't done one for a while so this will be interesting.
@Olmectron I, too, was joking, sort of, ... ish
@RareFan
Sure Palutena, Lucina, Robin and Bayonetta are not MegaMan/Cloud levels of iconic BUT I honestly feel they were fantastic choices because they (for me at least) represented the most exciting 'expansions' to the Nintendo pantheon on the 3ds and Wii U consoles.
Fire Emblem Awakening and Kid Icarus Uprising are my favourite 1st party 3ds games. Whilst not new series they certainly made both series much more relevant than they had been for a long time and these characters were much more fleshed out than most Nintendo characters.
Other than Inkling (who was the leading new character for Ulitmate) I don't think there was a better candidate for characters new to Nintendo on Wii U than Bayonetta.
The three franchises you have dismissed as being too small aren't even that small. If you look at sales figures for 3ds games Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus are among the best selling games to not feature Mario, Pikachu or Link.
If you haven't played the games you are dismissing you are missing out!
As long as they don't buff bayo...
Well that's disappointing. I was hoping we'd get a real tournament for Wii U and 3ds. I mean I have the Switch version, but, I'd much rather play Smash 4 since it's a much better game. There aren't very many people playing still, so I was hoping this tournament might make it easier to find a match, but, guess I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up.
Did I miss something? I distinctly remember finding Daisy Mae and Ring on the Spirit Board after their events were over, and heck - I even saw Olberic and Primrose after the Octopath event ended. I just assumed event Spirits dropped immediately after the events were over.
@SSJW oh....
