Today's turning out to be quite the day for Pokémon fans, as it has now been revealed that you can get your hands on special versions of the Pokémon Sword and Shield starters through Pokémon Home.
Yes, in addition to the news that the games' first DLC expansion, Isle of Armor, will be launching on 17th June, today also brings Hidden Ability variants of Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble. As noted by Serebii below, you can obtain them by depositing a Pokémon from Sword and Shield into Home.
If you need any help with using Pokémon Home, feel free to check out our full guide to the app - it should tell you everything you could possibly need to know.
Will you be getting these for your collection? Are you close to completing your Pokédex? Tell us below.

Grassy Surge, Libero and Sniper.
You're welcome, Ryan.
Since the article does not detail what the starter's hidden abilities are:
Grookey family - "Grassy Surge"
Turns the ground into Grassy Terrain when the Pokémon enters a battle.
Scorbunny family - "Libero"
Changes the Pokémon's type to the type of the move it's about to use.
Sobble family - "Sniper"
Powers up moves if they become critical hits when attacking.
The Libero hidden ability is effectively the same as Greninja's famous hidden ability "Protean".
It's famous for giving that Pokemon a Same Type Attack Bonus on all of its moves, and being able to avoid taking super effective damage by changing its typing.
Oh thanks, I'll make sure to do that then. Gotta get all the extras.
Can it be sword or shield or does it need to be both?
@Eel
You should be able to obtain hidden ability starters via online trading anyway, since breeding will make them readily available.
What will probably be challenging will be getting gigantamax versions of the evolved starters with their hidden abilities.
I deposited a Pokémon from Sword into Home but nothing happened. Not sure what I’m doing wrong 🤷🏻♂️
@RupeeClock games been flooded with these for months, hacked and shiny galore.
@RupeeClock well, I do have home installed on my switch so this sounds quicker if I just want the hidden ability starters.
@RupeeClock responsible for the nearly only ice stab people see
@ancientlii
The Scorbunny family currently can't learn any ice, water, grass, dragon, or fairy type moves, so that's not going to be a problem lol.
@Supadav03 Same. Unless you need a Pokemon from both games? In which case, not happening.
You have to go to the gift box in the app
@Supadav03 It's in the gift box on the mobile app, there's a rotom in there that I had no idea about!
@IanC14 I deposited Pokémon from both Sword & Shield but still nothing...
@Lute-Waffle @AndyD Ah, thanks guys! I found it and had all 3 starters, a Rotom and an Eevee waiting for me.
@ryancraddock distrubuted lol - unless this is how they spell it in game in which case I hang my head in shame
Totally forgot I have this installed with a premium subscription. I miss the 3DS games I think.
To get it, you need to deposit a Pokémon from Pokémon Sword & Shield into Pokémon HOME on the Switch and then check the Mystery Box in Pokémon HOME on mobile.
@Laxus Once again, TPC making simple distribution events needlessly complicated.
@AndyD any version. just depost a pokemon from sword/shield to pokemon home then look at pokemon home on mobile and accept your mystery gifts then go back to pokemon home on switch and transfer them to your game
This is a major thing for competitive. Rillaboom and Cinderace are getting a massive buff! I think the former will be especially viable now in VGC.
Do they all have set nature's?
Scorbunny: Jolly
Grooky: Adamant
Sobble: Modest
Feels too lucky to be random.
Honestly it’s a lot of hoop jumping, between the game, Home Switch and Home Mobile. I get it, they want to foster engagement between all the pieces of software. It’s the first time I booted up Home Mobile in months so I guess what do I know. 🤷♂️ 😜
