Despite all of the initial backlash and the whole redesign fiasco, this year's Sonic the Hedgehog movie went on to be a big success at the box office. The film managed to beat records set by the gaming world's other recent successful film, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, and went on to earn around $210 million in just ten days.
Given its success, it wouldn't exactly be surprising to hear of an upcoming sequel, but the film's director Jeff Fowler has insisted that no such talks are currently taking place. In an interview with USA Today, he notes that while a sequel isn't being planned, he'd "love to do more" with Sonic and friends on the big screen:
"There's so many more great characters to bring in and just more stories to tell, [but] nothing would bring me more happiness than getting another shot with these characters and to tell more stories. We'd love to do more with the Sonic cinematic universe."
If you haven't seen the film yet, remember that its digital release was actually brought forward and is available as we speak; the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD release is scheduled for 19th May.
Would you like to see a sequel? If you've seen the first one, did you enjoy the film? Let us know in the comments below.

With all the damn American Pie and Scary Movie sequels in existence, Sonic should and better at least get a sequel or two. Fingers crossed we get Chaos Emeralds and Knuckles in the next. We know for sure Tails is in the mix.
Saw the movie with my young kids and we all loved it. It would be great to see a sequel with Tails in, they left the door open so would be really surprised if it never got one.
I hope this all culminates in an epic ‘Endgame’ like scenario where Sonic and all his friends throughout the movies have to discover the real superpower of teamwork to stop Eggman from building an Interstellar Amusement Park and controlling the universe and the final battle should feature a Live and Learn/Gangster’s Paradise mash-up.
Hoping we don't get another Super Mario Bros. situation, where they tease a sequel at the end and nothing comes of it.
After producing the most successful video game adaption movie, you'd be remiss to not continue that story. Especially considering the teaser at the end.
The movie was actually pretty decent and worth the way the story unfolded I'm actually surprised to hear that. I assumed work on a sequel would start immediately tbh.
It's obvious they are making a sequel and are trying to keep it under wraps. That end scene with Tails obviously set up the movie for a sequel and Robotnik looking like Eggman was also a teaser.
Also, why wouldn't they want easy profits?
I wonder how they will introduce Metal-Sonic and Knuckles though?
Ugh- no, just no. The first attempt was pedestrian, lazy and dull as all get out.
The only saving grace was Jim Carrey and I think he deserved all the praise he got for the role.
This movie would have been a lot more relevant twenty years ago but again no, this flick was dead upon arrival.
Please SEGA- just let the little blue blighter die...
@NoNoseNosferatu How was it dead when it done really well and audiences responded well to it? Just because YOU don't like it and don't want more doesn't mean everyone else feels the same, in fact all the evidence suggests people want more.
I would say one in a million. So your saying there’s a chance. Love the dumb and dumber reference! X x x x x x
I do not believe for a second that a sequel isn't somewhere in the works. It did really well and had built-in sequel bait. No chance this goes nowhere.
Please no, one was way more than enough.
How I can see a sequel going: Dr Robotnik runs into Knuckles on the mushroom world where he is protecting the Chaos emeralds. Robotnik convinces Knuckles to return him to Earth but steals some of the Emeralds to power up his robots. Sonic and new friend Tails team up to stop Robotnik.
I hate it when a movie ends on a tease and a sequel has not been confirmed...
They BETTER make the sequel.
The whole film felt like a lukewarm starter, where the waiter constantly reminds you that "your meal will be ready in just a moment!"
Not for me thanks. It's cool that it didn't disappoint fans though.
I don't think much is in the works right now (barring virtual writer's rooms, pitching ideas, or work from home animation/editing).
Normally it's a terrible sign if a franchise starter doesn't have a sequel already in the works by this point. But nothing is normal right now. The whole film industry is on hold. We'll know better in another six months maybe.
Loved the first movie and would gladly see a sequel.
Just get better writers, don't "Hollywood"-ize Tails, and we're off to the races.
@Alpha008
Didn't Christopher Nolan end Batman Begins on a 'Joker' tease? At the time he had no intention on doing a sequel and WB hadn't confirmed one either. Fast forward 3 years later we get the best comic book movie put to screen with The Dark Knight. Fingers crossed then the Tails tease in Sonic does eventually lead a sequel that can become the best video game movie put to screen.
@JRokujuushi
Apologies if I have misread your post but you make it sound like you are actually disappointed that a SMB movie sequel was never made.
Hard to see how they won't do a sequel with the success it had, even when the Chinese market was out of the equation and global markets slowly closed up in the weeks following.
POSSIBLE VERY MINOR SPOILERS
Given the post credits scene, I thought there was going to be a sequel for sure 🤔🤔
No talks they can publicly discuss at the moment, most likely. I find it hard to believe no talks of a sequel of any kind hasn't occurred. Usually with these kinds of properties, a sequel is either decided on either ahead of time or the minute they know it's a hit.
not in the works but has a teased ending?
But the ending though.
I swear they better put knuckles and chaos emeralds back and when they find his lair he goes snoo PINGAS usual i see?
This movie was so awful....beyond embarrassing. Olive Garden paid promotion (2x)...script felt like it was a mishmash of ideas and no cohesive tone, lack of humor/jokes...
please just close the book on this painful piece of "cinema"
@unoclay I mean I wasn't looking for a life changing movie. It was a fun movie, my kids loved it, and I liked the easter eggs to the old games. Not sure why so many people hate it, then why did they watch it?
@Ragdoll72 I watched it, personally, because the reviews were mixed (hard to determine if it was good or bad) and i am part of a videogame podcast and wanted to report on it.
Keep in mind, Kids arent a good gauge of whether a film is good. They dont have critical distance/experience to know whether Pixar vs. awful film like Sonic are good/bad. They digest everything they are exposed to. Meanwhile, adults can recongize (say, Pixar) as great--and we need not pretend things like Sanic are anything other than a cash grab....
Each one of us has a billion skeletons in the closet from childhood--media we liked, and now (hopefully) have the intelligence to reevaluate.
I respect that you thought it was fun--but in objective, critical terms, it was absolutely awful. So many moments that could have been funny, undermined by lazy/nonexistent jokes and writing/ script that was obviously glued together from multiple drafts. Even Carrey couldnt carry it.
I am a fan of many awful films, fwiw--the key is knowing when it is bad. Just because one enjoys something doesnt make it critically good.
Wait... then why did they throw in that mid credit scene?
Honestly, I bet a lot of movies are having trouble attracting investors to kick in when 99% of movie theaters are closed and the digital market place is still figuring out what the right price point is.
I don't fully understand the hype of the film. It's ok at best, some nostalgia for those who like the character, but it would be a better fit coming out back in the 90's. It is funny to see people hyping it as doing 'better' than Detective Pikachu, despite it grossing less worldwide. It does help me understand how Sonic still manages to be a thing despite having some of the worst games ever though, lol
@Tipehtfomottob I was mainly just using that as a frame of reference since it's one I'm familiar with.
That said, while I acknowledge the SMB movie is far from great, I can't help but get some enjoyment from it when I watch it. I find their bizarro-world interpretation of the Mushroom Kingdom intriguing. So yeah, I guess I'm disappointed it never got the sequel it teased.
It's easy to see why a sequel is not in the works... Yet. Paramount probably didn't have enough faith in the movie to plan a sequel until they saw the first was a success. Once it was clear it was a hit, coronavirus was shutting everything down. Hollywood is figuratively burning down right now. At this point, NO ONE is starting any new movies.
@TheFox This is more or less the real reasons why it were not planned.
I bet they are just waiting on a new script, there's no way they'd go through all that effort to fix the Sonic movie if there wouldn't be a sequel, the building of the Eggman character, a very important character reveal at the end, etc.
I’m surprised they didn’t fast track it, although maybe this pandemic ordeal has something to do with it
@Ventilator Just based on our profile pics, I can tell we think alike.
@unoclay thanks for the lecture on what is good and bad that I didn't ask for.
@Ragdoll72 Apologies if offended, sincerely. You did reply to me saying, "Not sure why so many people hate it, then why did they watch it?"
I guess i assumed that replying to my comment, and asked why i watched it, made me think that you were actually asking for a reply.
Sincere apologies.
I don't get all the people calling the movie awful. It's generally targeted at kids, so yes it was never going to be a cinematic masterpiece. Shocking I know.
Yet its tone was spot on - more earnest and less campy - and it really hit all the right notes action-wise. (Also I was so glad there was none of that early 90's edgy 'tude or the franchise's later obsession with chili dogs but that's just personal preference.)
The jokes were surprisingly decent and included a few zingers I really didn't expect, like that Robotnik line about being an orphan, which by my reckoning must be the best joke in any videogame-to-movie adaptation ever.
True, there were maybe one too many instances of product placement, but the movie smartly owned it and made most of them into cleverly placed running gags, which I could appreciate. Anyway, given the movie's financial success I'm guessing they'll cut back on outside sponsorships if a sequel ever gets made.
Overall my family really liked the movie. It was a humorous and enjoyable time-waster for us adults and, for the kids, the best movie they said they've watched this year. If you haven't watched it yet, don't go in expecting Citizen Kane, but just one of the best video game movies ever made.
@WallyWest many folks would agree with me and I stand by what I said. The Sonic Franchise is rubbish and needs to be buried.
Just rented and watched the new sonic movie. Was shocked and surprised on how they brought the game to the screen. I used to play the sonic games when I was in my teen years, so I think my son will like this movie. Hopefully after this covid-19 thing is over they do a sequel, especially with teasing tails at the end. Would love to see a sequel with tails, knuckles and all from the games.
@TheFox Yep. I were a big fan too. Too bad PC version never came.
It was good and the cliffhanger with Miles at the end suggest a sequel may happen though I doubt they would do one. Even if a sequel wouldn't happen they could still make a cartoon or TV show that continues the story from where the movie left off similar to what Godzilla the series did back in 1998. The movie never had a sequel so the story continues with the show instead.
The movie made a box office killing of course there will be a sequel. There are so many ways you can go with the Sonic universe. They are just saying this so people can start the free marketing machine 🤦♂️
@NoNoseNosferatu Yeah sure but just because the minority agree with you doesn't mean the majority do.
Overall imo, I thought the Sonic movie was well worth it. The Sequel to hype people up. Everything. The Plot was simple but effective. The whole power of friendship has always been consistent with Sega. I can't stop watching it because it was that good. Majority of people gave it 5 stars. I don't listen to Critics or trolls. I listen to myself and majority would agree that this movie is gonna be breaking box office records despite the fact the movie had little to no expectation. The fact Paramount delayed the movie just so they could fix Sonic's design is a win win.
Spoiler alert * I was watching with my sister and as the movie was ending we were disappointed they didnt include Tails or even mention him. But then after some credits Tails showed up. Perfect ending! I really want to see the sequel with Tails!
