With 2020 grinding to something of a halt for many people around the world, the upcoming Switch game releases for April and May are perhaps more interesting than the average springtime months for many of us. Fortunately, we've got some gems to look forward to in the coming weeks.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons may be gobbling up most people's time - quite rightly - but variety i the spice (orange) of life, and there are some excellent games coming to Switch in April and May, several of which were only recently announced in the surprise-dropped Nintendo Direct Mini.
Let's have a look at the biggest games coming to Switch in the next couple of months, shall we?

Trials of Mana - 24th April
Trials of Mana, a fantastic Japan-only Super Famicom RPG known as Seiken Densetsu 3, only recently received an official localisation and release in the west as part of the excellent Collection of Mana Switch release. As a sequel to Secret of Mana, it was always likely to be good, but such was the quality of the game and the localisation that we're gagging to play it again in its remade, reimagined form.
The Wonderful 101: Remastered - 19th May
The glorious return of this previously Wii U exclusive comes following a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign from developer PlatinumGames. Along the way it broke through some Stretch Goals meaning that The Wonderful 101: Remastered will feature additional content. This means that there will be something new for veteran fans of the original game, although we imagine most of them contributed to the Kickstarter already.
If you missed out on The Wonderful 101 first time round, this is the perfect way to catch up on Switch. Not long to wait now.
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition - 29th May
Monolithsoft’s epic RPG Xenoblade Chronicles originally launched back in 2011 on the lil' old Wii. Now it's back to on Switch as Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. Series fans will no doubt have played the sequel on Switch already, so it's nice to have both of them available on Nintendo's latest console.
With improved visuals and a peppering of improvements over the original standard-definition release (and the New 3DS version), we'll only be missing a port of Wii U's Xenoblade Chronicles X and we'll have the full set on Switch. Wouldn't that be nice, hmm? In the meantime, we're itching to see how the original Xenoblade Chronicles holds up nearly a decade after its debut.
XCOM 2: Collection - 29th May
One of the surprise announcements from publisher 2K in the Nintendo Direct Mini broadcast, Switch has plenty of brilliant strategy games to its name already, but there is always room for a classic and XCOM is the series that birthed an entire sub-genre of strategy classics branded as XCOM-alike or XCOM-style.
XCOM 2 is Firaxis Games' 2016 sequel to the rebooted XCOM: Enemy Unknown from 2012. XCOM 2: Collection for Switch features four DLC packs (that'll be the Resistance Warrior Pack, Anarchy’s Children, Alien Hunters and Shen’s Last Gift) and the War of the Chosen expansion, too, so we have high hopes for this when it releases at the end of May.
Bioshock: The Collection - 29th May
There's always a lighthouse, there's always a man, there's always a... pizza? Yes, it's been a while since we played these classic, atmospheric first-person shooters and it's fantastic to have them Switch-bound in all their remastered glory. This collection brings BioShock Remastered, BioShock 2 Remastered and BioShock Infinite: The Complete Edition to Nintendo a Nintendo console for the first time ever, and we're looking forward to heading back to the soggy depths of Rapture.
However, one thing to note is that if you're buying the games physically, you'll need to make sure you have plenty of space to install them because this, the XCOM Collection above and the Borderlands Collection below will require a hefty amount of free space on your Switch's internal memory or Micro SD card. We do wish publishers would kindly put a stop to this sort of thing. Time to invest in a more substantial Micro SD card, we suppose.
Borderlands Legendary Collection - 29th May
The final in 2K's trinity of collections, Borderlands Legendary Collection includes Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, as well as a load of add-on content for each game. Again, if you're buying physically you'll need to make sure you've got space to download the content which doesn't come on the cart itself, but it's still a treat to be getting these games on Switch regardless.

I'm still a little confused about the Wonderful 101 because it's releasing in May, but on the e-mail for backers that arrived two days ago it's still indicated as arriving in April. Does anyone knows if the copies for backers are going to be sent earlier?

I'm having to suspend my gaming spending for a while due to the COVID-19 situation, I took a pretty gnarly pay cut at the day job and life is pretty dicey right now. I was hoping to pick up Trials of Mana but it looks like I'm gonna save that $ for Minecraft Dungeons cause I've been CRAZY hyped for that since last year. It's not a huge deal, I'm still getting stuff to review AND there's Animal Crossing so I'm all good. Might give me the motivation to check out some of my backlog too!

@GrailUK Cause they are considered emergency relief. I work for Amazon, we don't have to work, but we're still open. You can't close food, essentials, etc. Would cause people to riot.

I'm open to XCOM 2, although I don't see how it's going to run well on Switch, considering it doesn't run well on even more powerful consoles. Although, having played both XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, I'd opt for the latter in a heartbeat. It was a much more satisfying experience.
Also open to The Outer Worlds, but I want to see how it runs undocked first.
I don't understand the appeal of the Trials of Mana remake. I've got the original in the Collection of Mana. I don't think polygonal graphics are worth $50 more.

Only one that interests me is Trials of Mana (fortunately!). Where the hell is Doom Eternal, may end up buying it on my Xbox at this rate. Been a slim year so far for me. Ended up getting Daemon X machina in a sale and enjoying dipping into that until something worth buying new releases.
That retrobit N64 controller looks hella hard to use. What's with the Dpad position? Aside from that, Trials of Mana for me all the way, assuming I get it on Switch anyway. (And I likely will, given that PSN has been unstable for me since the outbreak). Xenoblade chronicles is a maybe for me, had my fill of the original Wii version. Lots of cool releases overall though.

Wait. I SAVED like $20 by donating to the 101 Kickstarter? That's not how Kickstarters are supposed to go!
I would argue that EVERY system is a glorified port machine, but for their exclusives. And I would argue that the best exclusives are still on Switch. Other systems may have more, and might push more polygons, but I've spent more time on Fire Emblem: Three Houses ALONE than I've spent playing my entire Xbox One catalog.
