Ever since the game launched last month, Animal Crossing: New Horizons players have been wondering where the series' famous art gallery has gotten to. An ever-present feature of previous games, the art gallery has been a much-loved part of Blathers' museum - fake paintings and all - but it's nowhere to be seen in the new game.
As you'll know if you own a copy yourself, the museum in New Horizons has areas for fossils, bugs, and fish, with a mysterious staircase that leads to nothing. It seems like this could all be about to change, though, as speaking to a villager called Fang reveals some very intriguing in-game text.
Check out the conversation below (and note that it was published to Twitter via Nintendo Switch Share, so this is the real deal).
As you can see, Fang talks about an art gallery that, at present, isn't even a thing. Does this mean that Nintendo originally planned to include an art gallery, or is the plan to patch it in at a later date? We're definitely hoping for the latter.
Just last week, we actually put together a whole feature on why we think the art gallery and good old Crazy Redd will return in New Horizons. This certainly adds even more potential to those early thoughts.
Do you think it's only a matter of time before we see the art gallery return? Would you like to see Crazy Redd return in New Horizons? Tell us below.

HMMMMMMMMMMMM perhaps
More stuff to collect?..... Count me in!
WOOO I AM SO EXCITED
The art collecting was my favorite thing to do in New Leaf
Yes please. Maybe a section dedicated to unused eggs too.
Why is everyone determined to spoil and rush a game that took years to make and will take the average gamer years to play?
This is good news. I find myself wishing we had more buildings in NH. Celeste astronomy lab, Brewster's coffee shop, Happy Home Academy building... These are just a few we could have. There's plenty of room on the island for one or two more venues.
@nintendork64 I want the nightclub with famicom medleys back again
I don't get why everyone keeps asking if such things are DLC. Couldn't it just be in the game and nobody's got there yet?
Great, now the games themselves are leaking stuff...
You guys must have something against being surprised. Do you sneak a peek at your Christmas presents too?
Could you not put the leaked information in the article title?
@popey1980 I'm wondering this too! The game is designed to make you wait for things to happen. What is the point of rushing it? Its meant to be played in short durations over a long period of time, not beat in a week. I suspect a lot of people just want to go viral with their social media posts, but man, the whole game is not meant to be rushed
@Yorumi Right, fair. Who knows, but I assume that any Animal Crossing DLC will be free...hopefully!
@ummyeahnintendo well i mean it shouldn't take a few years to do 100% completion or take a few weeks to get a house upgrade that can be done in 2 days ( no time traveling voo doo of course)
@popey1980 It’s literally the villager saying it though. It’s not even comparable to data mining because Nintendo themselves put it in the game.
So, noob here, the rumour is adding a door up the stairs in the museum, not turning the natural history museum into an art museum?
I don't spend a ton of time in the museum but it is 1of my favorite parts of the game and I would hate to see all my creatures replaced by art. I'm fine with any additions they want to add, just leave my current stuff alone.
I was hoping they would add the art gallery in through future updates. Fingers crossed it comes sooner rather than later!
@rjejr yeah there's no way they'd just replace everything with art lmao
@ummyeahnintendo
"Its meant to be played in short durations over a long period of time, not beat in a week."
Well, it's a game. I think people can play it ay way they see fit. If Nintendo wanted to kill time traveling, they could, but they don't. Why? I think they also want to give people the option to play however they want to.
I've had my animal villagers cryptically mention a big event coming up, and I don't think it's the Bunny Day nonsense, because they usually refer that by name.
@rjejr it’s just be adding a wing upstairs. The museum in this game only has bugs, fish, and fossils. EVERY museum in the series before this has had bugs, fish, fossils, and art. The museum we currently have has less wings than the museums in all the previous games, including the first one.
@rjejr In Animal Crossing on the 3DS, the art exhibit was a separate wing of the museum. If it's added to New Horizons, it won't replace anything, it'll be an addition. The most likely possibility is that a door will be added to the top of the stairs as part of a museum expansion.
@Mountain_Man yeah all the villagers say that and they’ve said it before the Bunny Day update. I think it’s just a general thing they say as there’s always upcoming events.
Cool! I think there’s been a lot of stuff that points to things like this being added. Some people have spiraled so far out of control over whether or not some characters will show up. Like, do you really think nintendo isn’t planning constant support and additions to this thing? This year is all about animal crossing, maybe just be patient and accept that content is being rolled out a little different this time to keep it relevant?
Doesn’t Blathers say that the museum is currently accepting bugs, fish, and fossils. Doesn’t the currently suggest that they will take more soon? That dialogue is activated when you try to donate, but you have nothing new to offer.
I really hope there's an expansion/Season Pass incoming. This game already needs it where I and I'm sure countless other gamers who've been playing it to death while being shut in are concerned. I'm very close to completing all the upgrades (bridges, inclines, terraforming) that I intend to do on my island, and my Nook Miles are running out of meaningful items (including Nook Miles tickets to visit islands with pretty much the same fruit and resources EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.) to purchase.
Along with the Art Gallery, I hope the pier on one end of the island hints at a return of swimming (and perhaps additional fish/sea critters) to collect. As others have already mentioned, another shop/building or two would likewise be nice, as well as a return of favorites like Redd, Kapp'n, and others.
Feature-wise, I'd love to see Nintendo adjust or add to the existing Nook Miles islands to allow players without online friends to be able to acquire things like rare fruit or other items a bit more easily; right now it's as if they're behind both a pay wall and whether you're fortunate enough to know someone with A) a Switch, B) a copy of the game, and C) different fruit.
It's amazing how fast even a game with this much content can begin to run out of freshness, but Nintendo has an opportunity with this iteration to use the Switch's online functionality to greatly extend AC: New Horizons' lifespan. My bet (at least hope) is that a near future Direct will announce just such additional content.
@Crockin To be fair, the content Nintendo has promised is holiday events. It makes sense for them to add other kinds of content too and I'm guessing it will happen, but I'm not going to expect it until Nintendo says they are adding other content.
@Mountain_Man Have you checked your town message board? My villagers started talking about an upcoming event after a fishing tourney notice was posted.
@Dodger that’s true, but there’s been stuff in the code and little clues in the language that slyly point to additions. Would actually be more surprised if it didn’t happen. Just have to be patient, hasn’t even been a month. They want us to play this all year. Even without, it’s a really hefty experience
April Fool's Day would have been a perfect time to reintroduce Redd if it hadn't been co-opted by Bunny Day. That said, signs are definitely pointing to his return, it's just a question of how long Nintendo is planning to make us wait.
@popey1980 because there's varying paces that people play animal crossing.
@Bromer Good catch, I never really gave it any thought.
Today when I was checking island eval Isabelle did mention something about wanting more shops on the island, so maybe they'll put up more stuff as the time goes by to keep the game fresh.
@NorrinRadd It's debatable if they didn't remove time traveling because they 'wanted people to play how they want' considering ACNH doesn't have cloud saves most likely because of time traveling shenanigans. Something tells me if they could've removed it they would, and we'd actually have clouds saves for it.
@Joeynator3000 haha yeah that made me chuckle!
@AtlanteanMan The game just came out and you're already asking for a Season Pass? It's a feature that was in the previous games, so it should be a free update IMO. Bit scummy if it was paid DLC.
@Monkeythief Had that message as well a few days ago. But Nintendo also said that they will keep making updates to the game. So new stuff will come in patches.
@arekdougy unfortunately not, anything currently coded into the game will have been the victim of datamining. There’s already people out there hacking the game saves and generating all kinds of stuff.
Blathers talks about only accepting bugs, fish and fossils right now which to me implies they are going to add this in at some point
Ok....I honestly don’t know the answer to what happens to our egg-crafted items after Bunny Day. Do they remain?
@Octane Agreed. This is a premium priced game (much higher than DS and 3DS AC prices). DLC should remain free.
@FatHedgehog
Yes, they'll remain in your house or inventory, but there won't be any other eggs so build anything you need before the event is over. So don't worry about losing your stuff
Interesting.
I checked out the Japanese equivalent, and it's completely different.
(Keep it to yourself, but the [island] Museum is designed pretty great.
Certainly, it's picturesque no matter how you look at it!
And I have no eye for art, so for me to think that, it must be good, right?
If you've never been, you should take a look for yourself!)
It's meant to be a line bragging about the local island having a museum when you're visiting another island, and is for 8/8 JP personalities and 7/8 English personalities, but somehow one personality's English text is completely different.
It really does seem like 'whoops, we put line 26[art gallery brag]'s text in line 25[museum brag] by mistake', then they redacted line 26 and it got left in.
Seems entirely possible it's just a leftover piece of dialogue from older games. But that staircase is weird and the absence of art is also quite strange. Along with swimming/diving and a variety of NPC cuts.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the feature return in one of the planned updates. And I really do hope all these various things return, and with other new features over time.
PLEASE! be real, please! I need my paintings, counterfeits, Crazy Redd membership fee, password hunting with villagers, and filling up the museum again. Its so empty without the Roost and painting exhibit.
maybe the museum is going to have an upgrade like it did in new leaf. and not just another floor.
the staircase might be a entrance to the second floor leading to a hallway with two or more doors. one room will have something to do with Celeste (like it did in new leaf) and the other one having a painting collection in it.
hopefully an update will come before the end of the month. or by June at the latest depending on how detailed the gallery is and will be. for all we know there might be updates to the other exhibits in the museum as well..
I'm all in, especially if they add a little coffee shop adjoining the art gallery - owned and operated by, of course, none other than the coolest AC character ever: Brewster <3
since Crazy Redd and Tom Nook are mortal enemies,Redd is gonna have his own Island like where he sell daily selection of Paintings and itens, that you can asses to Blathers like Fossils and donate multiple times.
Redd could come to the pier once a week with a ship like Beedle‘s in Wind Waker
@nessisonett I wasn’t talking about mining, it’s more than everyone is being so quick to post what’s in the game and potentially ruining it for the people who are playing it like they would a traditional AC game, ie, a slow leisurely experience. Spoils it knowing what’s coming up.
@nessisonett it was more a comment on how people are rushing the game and posting literally everything they see. It’s not a game designed to be beat in a week. My opinion I guess, that’s why I don’t understand those that do that time-travel thing.
The game feels really empty compared to New Leaf. Where are all the shops? Please tell me Tortimer is somewhere to be unlocked. It's very pretty, but majorly lacking imo. I'm 100 hours in and I fear I've unlocked everything. Oh and where have the bananas and stuff gone? Seriously?
Returning players would do well to wait and see if this stuff gets added later if you ask me.
He was always one of my favorite characters. Has anyone upgraded Nooks Cranny? They're so many different views on how to upgrade, it's confusing. Has anyone got a tailor shop? Again, conflicting information. Every site I go to says something different. Oh, last night I saw the constellations lady, Blather's sister.
@Moon
The game doesn't tell you what to do. For the fruit, go buy a nook ticket, you go to different islands. I have found oranges, coconuts, and pears. Peaches are native to my island. Ask Nook, what should I do.
There was a recent supposed big leak saying there will be a big summer update which would add an art section to the museum as well as bringing back diving alongside a deep sea creatures section in the museum. Also Brewster and his cafe will be returning (which had already been supposedly found in the games code by dataminers).
@biglittlejake We have a tailor shop. At the end of Mabel's second visit to our plaza, she asked us to pick out a spot, but who knows what actually triggers it. Is it always on the second visit? Do you need to buy enough stuff from her to trigger it? <shrug>
@brideck
I have had Mabel show up five times. I have only bought once, no shop yet. She's just a peddler.
@biglittlejake just buy from her. Why should the Able sisters open a shop on your island when nobody buys something. At least talk to her.
@FatHedgehog
They remain, at least in the other games they did. I came to the point of just selling the eggs after crafting the furniture and etc.
@vanYth
I will try that strategy. Still, what about upgrading Nooks Cranny? I have spent 149, 830.
I have no idea with Nook's Cranny. We have two players and we do a ton of business in there every day and there hasn't been a peep about expanding it yet. I'm sure it'll happen eventually.
Nintendo Life Writer Potentially Spoils The Surprise
@biglittlejake I've already got them all thanks mate. I just mean there're more fruit in New Leaf.
