Earlier this week, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai uploaded a picture from the Switch entry to Twitter, featuring Pit from the Kid Icarus series (see above). It sent many of his followers into a frenzy, as the Battlefield level in the background (picturing Inkling Girl) was actually the one from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
While many thought it was likely to be an older build of Ultimate, before the game's own unique Battlefield level had been constructed (credit to GameXplain), it also led to wild speculation that the previous Battlefield stages could be making a return as DLC. It appears this is not the case, though. Sakurai noticed how some fans responded and decided to stamp this out right away with the following English tweet:
Yesterday I posted a pic showing what looks like an old version of Battlefield. This was a dev stage we used to check how the game's fighter models would look using a common light source, etc. You won't find this in the final version of the game!
So, there you have it – the stage seen in Sakurai's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate screenshot is a dev stage and it can't be found in the release version. Case closed.
Were you hoping to see this or other Battlefield stages added? Would you like to see any other stages return? Tell us below.

I wasn't aware anyone was asking for it.
@Kalmaro They could have just been adding this in as a little extra, there's probably a lot in Smash (and, for that matter, other games) that nobody asked for.
Personally I think it'd be neat if they did bring back all the old Battlefields and Final Destinations for nostalgia sake, but won't miss it if they never do so. ..which they probably won't.
I hope they still add in a few returning stages, as they did in Smash 4. PictoChat, Rainbow Road, and Pac-Maze are sorely missed.
@Yosher I'm all for free stuff, and all the older stages coming back would be interesting (bring back Poké-floats!)
After Everyone is Here, it would be cool if we also got Everywhere is Here, with all the Stages from the previous games coming back, and the other versions of Battlefield and Final Destinations too.
So, who really cares about that stage?
They should also make another Everyone is Here for Assist Trophies and Pokémon.
Promote one character from Assist Trophy to Fighter, like Waluigi, Ashley, Bomberman or Isaac, and then bring back all the Assists and Pokéball Pokémon from the previous games, even Little Mac, Isabelle, Dark Samus and Charizard would have both roles at once.
@victordamazio
I thought that too. But I would also pay good money to have all of the old stages back.
@Yosher It would be a neat feature if you could select the other versions of Battlefield and Final Destination like the fighters' alternate costumes.
There would be a lot hype for every time players choose Melee's F.D. for a last match.
Just add a Wooly World / Crafted World stage for goodness sake.
@PikaPhantom it drives me mad that PAC-Land came back but PAC-Maze didn’t. One is an iconic part of video game history, the other looks like a pointless kids drawing. Sure, PAC-Land’s scrolling is a reasonably unique mechanic in Smash, but still... it’s just rubbish all round.
Battlefield? I didnt know EA released that on the WiiU?
@Kalmaro With the amount of stages they brought back I'm honestly surprised they did not go all the way for these too. Some stages also were surprising omissions, IMO, and I hope they come back still.. even if it's through paid DLC.
@Elvie That would be pretty cool yeah, though with how Melee has run rampant for years in the Smash competitive scene, I think maybe some people might be tired of seeing Melee's F.D. at this point.
@Franklin They did have a Woolly World stage in Smash 4 but was, for some reason, not brought back, even though it would've been great to go along with Yoshi's crafted look. Personally the stage I miss most probably.
@Yosher
Precisely.
@gaga64 I know some argue it couldn't have come back because the ghosts would change colors only for specific players and appear normal for the others on their 3DSes, but they could just outline the ghosts with the player's color instead to show which one is immune. Not the best workaround, but it works.
It also still amazes me that there's not a Bowser's Castle stage yet, or something for R.O.B.
Glad to see him confirm that Smash Switch was initially a WiiU port.
If only the Pokefloat stage returns, that was a really unique stage.
It seems that Sakurai tweets in English when he wants fans to hush up
Can we just get a new Kid Icarus?
I wonder how often he thinks to himself, "Nobody is going to notice that this is a dev only thing..." and then realizes he was wrong.
@victordamazio nah, all that time spent on stages and (especially) Assist Trophies would be pretty much wasted, as it'd be way more exciting (and profitable) to develop new characters or even modes with those resources.
@victordamazio
Personally, I'd go for "Every game mode is here."
I miss Subspace and Break the Targets.
@clvr No, the Smash Community thinks too much about the Fighters, while they are the most important part of the game, they should care more about the other aspects, like Stages, Songs, Spirits, Trophies, Assists, Bosses and Modes.
There are many franchises that already have Fighters that deserved more content beyond another Fighter.
Lots of things I really want to see. I want a metal sludge stage and then PREVIOUSLY I would have liked Sans included in smash... i really wanted to BONE them to death 😂😂😂😂😁😁😁😁
If there's any stage I wanted to come back, it's the alternate versions of stages such as Mushroomy Kingdom World 1-2 from Brawl (which would have served as an excellent stage for Piranha Plant, since the original SMB World 1-2 was its first appearance) and the greyscale version of the Game Boy Kirby stage from Smash 4.
@westman98
Smash Run with player interaction, just like City Trial.
Another Kid Icarus please. Or another Kirby by Sakurai would be amazing.
Select your pics of the day more carefully, Sakurai.
It's fine to use a dev version to take screenshots with more ease, but showing unused content stirs up a lot of talk, especially when the game is out for more than a year and many are still picking up every last crumb of new information about updates and DLC.
Now we have a couple frankly disappointed people, however, Sakurai quickly responded and explained the situation to not break anymore hearts. ^^
And it unearthed lots of demand for stage pack DLC - and on that note my favourites are Orbital Gate (that awesome-looking Starfox stage from SSB4), and a "Best of" Miiverse stage.
@PikaPhantom bruh PictoChat is already a stage in Ultimate
@Kalmaro I want:
Final Destination (Melee & Brawl)
Battlefield (Brawl)
Poke floats (Melee)
I personally think there could be more Sonic Stages, since there are only 2.
@HeartlessMimikyu There's PictoChat 2, which has an entirely different set of drawings the stage circles through.
Why can’t he have random stage DLC no it’s gotta be endless boring cameo filled ones for the fighter pass,
Battlefield is a boring stage anyway
@victordamazio and that's exactly why it makes more sense to spend money on those, rather than anything you brought up, because the community at large wants characters and modes more.
You can't just say "no I want other stuff more so you and everyone else should, too", it's pretty childish.
@clvr I'm just saying that Smash Bros. is not just Fighters, the extra content is also important and people should not focus only on the Fighters, and I don't think content related to the existing Fighters should be paid, more Stages, Bosses, Songs and other stuff should come in free updates, only the character packs should be paid DLC.
@victordamazio you realize that all of that costs a huge amount of time and work, right? I obviously would like to have all of that, but you also gotta understand that resources are limited and have to be allocated "here" or "there", you can't have everything.
Especially if you have the pretense of not even paying for it.
It would be really cool to have the Metal Mario stage (Meta Crystal) from Super Smash Bros. 64 as a DLC along with its orginal music and a remix, and maybe also the original and a remix of the metal battle music from Melee.
@Chibi_Manny: Ultimate has the Meta Crystal battle theme (music).
Everyone_Else: Yeah, I wish they had included all the previous stages, including redundancies like Sector Z/PictoChat (original), the ability to select the multiple variations of Battlefield/Final Destination, & the Mushroomy Kingdom underground, but it's not the end of the world that they didn't.
Edit: While they weren't regular stages per say, I imagine others have used the stage creator to recreate the various trophy stages from Melee.
