Regional Exclusives Collage

In the grand scheme of things, Pokémon GO is a forgiving game in terms of in-app purchases: it is very easy to have fun with the game and collect a huge number of the 400+ available monsters without ever spending anything in the in-game store. However, as you narrow down the list of everything you still need to catch, you may well find that a few intercontinental flights stand between you and full 'dex completion…

There are currently 27 regional exclusive Pokémon – as well as one Pokémon with two regional variations (and a pair of Pokémon that are, thankfully no longer regionally exclusive). In this guide, we’ll help you work out which regional exclusives are available to you, and which ones you’ll have to travel to find. We’ll also give you a crash-course in the history of how Niantic has mixed up their regional strategy in the past – providing opportunities to grab exclusives without dusting off your passport.

Recent Developments

Regional Pokémon in 5km Eggs - Mime Jr. Added

Niantic have announced that regional Pokémon will now start to appear in 5km as well as on the map - this is intended to be a permanent change. In addition to this, Mime Jr. - the pre-evolution of the European exclusive Mr. Mime, will also start appearing in that region's 5km eggs.

Generation 5 (Unova) Pokémon regional exclusives

Niantic is now rolling out generation 5 Pokémon, originally seen in the Nintendo DS games Pokémon Black and Pokémon White. The following newly announced regional exclusive Pokémon have been added to the lists below

  • Asia-Pacific: Pansage, the Grass Monkey Pokémon
  • Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India: Pansear, the High Temp Pokémon
  • The Americas and Greenland: Panpour, the Spray Pokémon
  • Western hemisphere: Heatmor, the Anteater Pokémon
  • Eastern hemisphere: Durant, the Iron Ant Pokémon

Regional Exclusives List – A Continent-by-Continent Guide For Holidaying Pokémon Fans

Regional exclusives throw a curve(Poké)ball to the dedicated Pokémon GO player: no matter how many egg-hatching kilometres your roam, you’re never going to just stumble upon a monster kept in the pocket of a completely different continent.

Exclusive Pokémon spawns probably shouldn’t be a factor in where you choose to holiday next year (or at least, anywhere in the top 10 list of factors), but if you’re holidaying a good distance away from home, they’re a nice little bonus. And be sure to let your Pokémon GO playing friends and colleagues know about the list if they let slip that they’re off somewhere nice (regional Pokémon – a better souvenir than a stick of rock).

Regional Exclusive Events – Raids, Eggs, Migrations and Other Events

With the number of regional exclusive monsters growing significantly in recent years, Niantic occasionally throw a bone to those of us who haven’t recently flown long-haul (or know Pokémon GO playing friends doing the same). Various in-game and real world events are used as vehicles for temporary and permanent changes to exclusivity, including the following past events:

September 9 to 16 2019 (Ultra Bonus Unlock Week 2)

Repeating a similar event from September 2018, Farfetch’d, Kangaskhan, Mr. Mime and Tauros were temporarily available to all Pokémon GO players.

  • There was a chance of hatching the usually region-locked Pokémon Farfetch’d, Kangaskhan, Mr. Mime and Tauros from 7km eggs
  • Incubators were twice as effective
  • All four Pokémon were newly available in shiny form

January 15 2019: Lunatone and Solrock Appear in Raids

For one day Lunatone and Solrock were featured in Tier 3 Pokémon raids, allowing temporary access to all players.

September 13 to October 8 2018: Farfetch’d, Kangaskhan, Mr. Mime, Tauros Hatching from 7km Eggs

The game’s original quartet of regional exclusives were temporarily available worldwide in 7km eggs. These eggs are received by exchanging gifts with other players. Relatively low hatching rates for Farfetch’d, Kangaskhan, Mr. Mime or Tauros did not guarantee players a regional exclusive Pokémon.

June 21 2018: Lunatone and Solrock Migration

Niantic marked the 2018 summer solstice by moving Solrock from Africa, South America and North America to Asia, Australia and Europe, with Lunatone moving in the opposite direction. The pair have not switched back for subsequent solstices.

February 9 2018: Plusle and Minun Lose Regional Exclusivity

These polarised Pikachu-esque rabbit friends were released as regional exclusives (with Plusle sticking to North Africa, South America and North American, Minun in Asia, Australia and Europe). Niantic decided to allow opposites to attract – and the dex-filling duo have been available everywhere ever since.

January 5 2018: Seviper and Zangoose Migration

Before January 2018, Seviper could be found in Asia, Australia, Europe and Zangoose in Africa, South America and North America. The long feuding pair were switched and have yet to revert to their original locations.

Regional Exclusives at Pokémon GO Fest, Pokémon GO Safari Zone and Other Events

As with the extremely elusive Unown, regional exclusives are shipped along to various Pokémon events such as GO Fest, Safari Zone, and the Pokémon World Championships as another perk of attending (and in the case of GO Fest, paying the price of entry).
