One of the video game highlights of the past decade was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It's a beautiful game that has inspired its fanbase in many different ways and is still being enjoyed by many Switch owners around the world.
We've seen some stunning animations based on the title in the past, but this latest trailer directed by Lee Jumi and Seon Seungyeon is quite possibly the best one yet. It's an absolutely stunning clip that draws on Studio Ghibli's famous art style to retell the story in Breath of the Wild – from Link's beginnings right up until his final showdown with Calamity Ganon. It's all backed by the main theme song, which makes it even more emotional.
Again, this is a fan-made animation. If this is what the fans can do, we can't help but wonder what a professional animated television series or film based on the Zelda series would like nowadays. In 2015, there was a rumour a Legend of Zelda Netflix series was in development, although this was believed to be live-action and we've not heard anything about it since.
What do you think of the above trailer, though? Would you like to see a modern film or animated series based on the Zelda games?

Either a full fledged anime of Breath of the Wild made like this, or a full series of that awesome CGI Majora's Mask animated short would be amazing to see!
Oh. My. Good. God. This is absolutely beautiful. Imagine a collaboration between Studio Ghibli and Nintendo! Zelda is the perfect project! And maybe Earthbound. Oh and Kirby. .... ok there’s a lot but Zelda is definitely up top.
Not gona lie, cried a bit.
Beautiful. I’m so glad people take the time to make art like this.
And that BotW theme tune is so powerful.
Wow, this is dope! So well done!
That was Gorgeous!
It looked wonderful, I wouldn't mind seeing more of that style.
I’d like a Netflix show like this
I love it when I see two of my favorite things put together.
This makes me want a Zelda anime so bad. To bad Nintendo probably won’t ever approve another Zelda series.
I have to say that this 2-minute trailer made me more excited than sitting through yet another typical Hollywood-fare trailers with mega million budgets.
This looks a bit more like Makoto Shinkai's style to me, but great video!
Better watch it now before the big N has it taken down.
We all keep nagging Nintendo to finally give us some sort of Zelda animated or live action series, but if anything, I’m thankful fans like these are able to help give us a glimpse at what will most likely never be.
This is absolutely beautiful!!

Like this one?
Wow! That was awesome! I wish this was a show!
I wish I had talent like this to draw and animate something amazing like this. Must have taken ages, but is still amazing!
And this is the best music from the final trailer, which got so much hype for BoTW 3 years ago haha.
Not 60 fps
(im kidding. No cartoons are 60 fps. 24 frames hand drawn is extremely labor intensive. Only big budgets, like Disney, ever did 24 fps, as far as i know. Just skimmed the Zelda cartoon advice, it's REAL impressive.)
Meh, no hentai.. Waste of time
"Woooooow!" (Beedle voice) That was a terrific watch.
This is gorgeous and I now want a full movie please and thank you.
Man.... I always wanted a great zelda Anime/manga movie or series. (No not the one " Excuuussse me, princess" lol)
Nintendo wants to be as big as disney, then start with These movies.
Or a action packed anime serie for Super Smash bros.
so this is basically a full digest of the feelings I've got playing the game...oh how I absolutely love this game...
Wow, incredibly beautiful, I want to play the game again.
Thanks for linking this, NL.
If anyone ever wants me to define hyperbole for them, I'll just point them to the title of this article.
100% chance i would watch this on Netflix... over and over again!
Brilliant, Love Zelda, love Ghibli, yes please make this a full film
I've been playing BotW since late November early December and I've been enjoying it so far. Loving everything about it. While playing it I was thinking this would make a great TV series.
The fan trailer is great.
That was awesome, great work!
Beautiful!!!! Want to see an official anime like that!
Honestly, found the backgrounds beautifully painted, but thought the character design and animation a bit... amateurish.
@mr_eman I understand what you mean but for a fan production, which has limited resources, it is a good effort.
@LUIGITORNADO no thanks, don't want link to be portrayed as an obese trans black woman who's in an open relationship with gannon who himself is a lesbian
@SonOfVon Like they did with the Witcher? LOL
Okay, that was pretty good. I wouldn't have been surprised to see that as a trailer for a full fledged movie or series release.
@SonOfVon Cuz that's what they've done on all their other adaptations >_>
Honestly BotW really is the game i was waiting for all my gaming life I think, even now after hundreds of hours I get shocked at just how much effort was put into this that it’s as close to perfect as any game out there. Playing so much makes me want so many other features but hopefully BotW 2 will do that.
I’m so excited to see how the second one will compare and how they could top BotW? To see it’s effect with things like this to self made maps etc goes to show just what an amazing experience BotW has been for people.
Should be a DLC to upload to the game to play on the Switch.
It's okay
But hey, Link looks more like a boy than he does in the game. clap clap
I'd have liked more in-between frames, but overall a nice job. The style was cool (though Link honestly looked extremely girly in terms of facial features half the time, which doesn't fit at all) and it was well made for sure.
Still, more in-between frames. People underestimate them way too often.
Lovely. This was very well done!
@Dakka-Dakka Totally, for a fan production it really is fantastic. For me, when some elements are top notch and others are lackluster, it really puts a spotlight on the things that are a miss. From the character design and animation standpoint, it appears they were attempting a Studio Ghibli animation style, and that is such a high bar to emulate convincingly.
