Black Friday's impact has been felt on the UK charts this week as some unlikely titles make a return to the top ten.
Rare's Xbox One exclusive Sea of Thieves was the big winner, leaping back up the chart to number four after occupying the 23rd position in the chart last week. The game was helped by massive discounts on Black Friday, as were the likes of FIFA 20 and Minecraft: Xbox Edition.
Despite things getting shaken up a little, Nintendo's titles still did reasonably well. Pokémon Sword took 6th place (down from 3rd) while Shield dropped from 5th to 8th. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe maintained its hold on 7th place, while Luigi's Mansion 3 fell from 6th to 9th. Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition dropped two places from 8th to 10th.

Pokemon Sword/Shield weekly UK retail sales:
1) ~190,000
2) ~65,000
3) ~65,000
Total: ~320,000
Total retail sales should surpass 400,000 copies sold by the end of the year.
Very impressed with how well Luigi's Mansion 3 is selling. Retail sales have comfortably surpassed 100,000 copies sold.
That looks like about what I'd expect from the UK charts.
@westman98 Out of curiosity, why do you analyze sales data so much? I always see your name appear on these sorts of lists, is it just a hobby?
*Sees FIFA 20 at #1 and Sea of Thieves at #4...
The UK gonna UK.
That's still 5 / 10 of Nintendo Switch games in there with 4 / 10 created and published by Nintendo. That's a heck!
@STEVEXSTEVE I'm glad he does it as NL rarely do it. Interesting to see.
Gonna breed a ton of Scorbunnys and surprise trade them all on Christmas
@STEVEXSTEVE
It's fun
Also, unlike movie box office revenues, video game sales numbers (outside of Japan) are very hard to come by, especially in more recent years. So its worth sharing when you can extract some numbers.
@westman98 I always look forward to your extra data, keep it up, thank you!
Finished Jedi: Fallen order and the ending is epic!... Not surprised it stayed up there. Finally, a good SW game!.
Tons of pokemon were bought as christmas gifts in my fam on black friday 😊
Games sold by platform
PS4: 500,000 games
Xbox1: 413,000 games
Switch: 361,000 games
And again, the numbers show MOST gamers buy top games where they are available. "hybrid" is irrelevant - they will make time to play at home.
Minecraft Xbox and Sea of Thieves leapt back up as they were bundled with the Digital XB1S that was being sold for £119. Mario Kart 8 is in most of the Switch bundles out there, FIFA and COD is in a lot of PS4 bundles. Pokemon was always likely to be a huge seller.
In that context it’s amazing to see Luigis Mansion hanging in there. Switch continues to do unbelievably well in the UK. I know Nintendo handhelds often do but the software sales are excellent.
@electrolite77
Thanks wondered how the hell sea of thieves got to 4.
@BenAV Agree. I feel it’s looked a bit like this for the past 20 years....
I thought Switch might suffer this week in the UK as most of the real savings were for Xbox and Playstation so for 5 of the top 10 games to be exclusively on Switch (OK 4 really) is some achievement.
It really is the year of Luigi also, people love that green guy!
Edit: Also Ring Fit Adventure selling more than Death Stranding and GTA V makes me chuckle.
Ugh! An EA sports game and another CoD at the top of the list.
I know at least a few more Switch games could of made it if stores actually listened to Nintendo and put them on sale for $40
The fact that the Switch game sales were semi-strong this past week is extremely surprising. Most of their IP sales weren't nearly as great as their competitors. You can't really compete with PS4 games selling at $9.99 and top Xbox games selling around the same price.
thatll happen when you dont offer any REAL deals for the holidays...
@companyoflosers
They still got 5 Nintendo published titles in the top 10 and all the Nintendo titles in the top 40 all increased in sales except Sword and Shield who had minor drops.
Considering as you say there were no real deals then that can only be considered a win for Nintendo.
@companyoflosers
What will happen? What do you think has happened?
@DAHstroy
Thing is, it turns out you can compete. Nintendo games sell at full price because you can’t get them anywhere else. I also believe keeping their prices high is working for them, nobody is waiting for a big discount.
Yeah obviously.
They were not discounted, i had intended to buy Sword myself but as it never got a discount but Witcher 3 and Dragon Quest 11 did... my money and time have gone elsewhere for now.
Also I've cooled a bit on the idea of getting either pokemon games for now.
Maybe next year.
The Switch sold just over 100,000 units on Black Friday week in the UK. (The XBO sold a bit more than that, which makes sense given how cheap the XBO SAD was.) This makes Black Friday 2019 the biggest week of Switch sales ever.
