Reflect on 2017 and you might remember this was the year Nintendo launched the Switch. It also happened to be the same year TIME named the system the top gadget. The device managed to beat Apple's iPhone X and Microsoft's Surface Laptop.
Now, TIME has put together a top ten list of the decade's most important and influential gadgets. Thanks to its existing win, the Switch was recognised. It's worth pointing out this list doesn't cover every year within the decade, and there are even some double-ups in certain years.
- Apple iPad (2010)
- Tesla Model S (2012)
- Raspberry Pi (2012)
- Google Chromecast (2013)
- DJI Phantom (2013)
- Amazon Echo (2014)
- Apple Watch (2015)
- Apple AirPods (2016)
- Nintendo Switch (2017)
- Xbox Adaptive Controller (2018)
Here's exactly what it had to say about Nintendo's hybrid system:
When it comes to gaming on the go, no one can top Nintendo’s track record, beginning with the humble Game Boy in 1989. But the introduction of its hybrid Nintendo Switch in 2017 — which you can play either portably or connected to your TV — might be the company’s most important contribution to gaming yet. Compared to the competition, it handily takes the crown as the most important video game console of the decade, with fans begging developers to bring their next title to the Switch. Its smartphone-inspired portability, paired with Nintendo’s ever-growing library of blockbuster, independent and vintage titles, makes the Switch feel like the culmination of Nintendo’s idea of what gaming should be.
Put your hands together for the Switch in the comments below, and let us know what you think of the rest of this list.

We truly do live in the best timeline, huh?
I hesitate to call some of those important or influential.
Anyone else think that an xbox one controller is not a good choice for one of the top 10 "influential and important" gadgets of the decade? I'd barely put it on a 2018 list let alone the decade.
Tesla is a gadget? Oh yeah it runs on battery, it's an electronic toy.
thats a pretty crap list lol.
When people are "influenced" to buy 2 Switches in order to trade pokemon.........then yes.
Xbox is called a desperate measure for a dying console.
@RedBlueCarrots The Adaptive Controller is actually really cool! It’s designed to be customizable to help with a MASSIVE range of special needs and mobility issues. If the Switch deserves a spot on the list, I think the AC does as well. Both are very innovative and tread new ground in the gaming industry.
(Full disclosure: I do not own an Xbox and don’t intend to buy one. I just think that the Adaptive Controller is cool and does a lot of good.)
@PBandSmelly It allows people with physical disabilities to play games, just like everyone else. It’s probably the most Nintendo thing not to be made by Nintendo, and I’m surprised it was Microsoft who stepped forward to make a way anyone can play. Definitely deserves to be on this list
I’ve seen lists like these put together, and the process was a joke. I don’t care what Time thinks, just look at their Person of the Year.
How can some of you not see how revolutionary these gadgets are? In the early 2000s we didn't have cell phones and then the decade ended with smartphones. The jump wasn't as big as people remember...
...however this list starts with the tablet which imho isn't that great but opened many doors between phones and TVs - but also this list has a drone, a car, remote casting device, a smart speaker, a smart watch, smart earphones, a hybrid home/handheld video game console and video game accessory that adds a massive amount of inclusivity.
What did you expect to happen this decade?
This is the same magazine that had a 7 year old as their person of the year right?
@isellpixels we had cell phones in the early 2000s. My first phone was a Nokia flip phone when I was 14 (year 1998). We had smartphones back then as well thanks to Blackberry. However it wasn't until the iPhone in 2007 that smartphones really took off. As much as I despise Apple products, no one can deny that their products have been influential, as noted by the large number of them on this list.
I think the Switch is The Ultimate Console.
I wish more third party developers would think the same and published more recent AA/AAA titles on the console, instead of the many-years-old ones it mostly gets..
Recognized. You had one job...
@ItsOKToBeOK When it comes to accessibility Nintendo is the worst actually. My friend has one finger on one of his hands and Nintendos strict control schemes and inability to change button mapping, and especially the games requiring wiimote+nunchuck makes a lot of their games inaccessible for him. On the ps4, for instance, the system let's you remap every button the way you want. The Xbox adaptive controller is a great thing.
And rightly so!!
I'll be the first to admit I was a little wary of being a day one adopter after failings of the Wii U (very underrated console I might add, just didn't capture the publics imagination and therefore didn't receive great support).
As it turns out though, it's probably one of the best purchases I've EVER made. Had countless hours of fun with it and I've still got a list of games as long as my arm that I've yet to purchase.
Fortunately my daughter has asked for a Switch Lite for Christmas which gives us the opportunity to buy some of those games for her (win win situation)
@hitherehello
And he did it. 😊 UK spelling... just like realise, organise, colonise...
@Ooyah
Ahhhh... that makes sense.
@Sandro89
No. They have the person who gave one of the most important global issues a voice, and made us all actually think about it. You really think that's so stupid?
@ItsOKToBeOK and Nintendo still does not have something like the Adaptive Xbox Controller. Also most Nintendo games do not allow you to change controls/ all controls which is a pity for disabled gamers.
Atleast Sony has a more wild variety of controllers/ and allows you to change controls system wide. However it is still not enough.
Sony and Nintendo both need something like the adaptive controller!
@Clabeux : I think some of the PowerA controllers have remappable controllers, including the recent Scorbunny/Grookey/Sobble ones.
ackchyually Nintendo's handheld beginnings started with the Game & Watch systems long before the Gameboy
Honestly can’t argue much about this list, even though a lot of these didn’t personally impact me i do know they impacted lots of people in a great way so thumbs up from me
@Sandro89
She’s 16, educate yourself
Switch even appeared in the season 1 finale of Dr.Stone,when the main protagonist(a man used to modern advancements that got stuck in a new stone age)reminished about the marvels of the modern world.
@hitherehello it's correct:
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/recognise
@ItsOKToBeOK
and logitech finished the job
and released a set of switches to make the xbox controller truely usefull
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/11/logitechs-100-adaptive-gaming-kit-finishes-what-xboxs-xac-started/
@isellpixels
Hoverboards, self tying laces, talking one size fits all jackets and flying cars.
Only things I dont believe should be onnthe list are the airpods and the watch as I dont think they are new or different and people already had choice before them
@Flowerlark Actually smartphones are just GameBoy inspired telephones.
@KitsuneNight almost all of those exist.
@Marios-love-child I have to agree I was a day one adopter after being won over by the marketing.
I just have to say wow this console is the best console I have ever owned and has encouraged me to try out lots of new games. It is flexible to many differing situations and is truly a joy to play.
@sanderev
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzEU3hcfFgY
well they are a bit late
100% agree. I want this type of system for the rest of my life and that means no streaming!
@KitsuneNight True but there is a company that has been developing flying cars for over 20 years now. Also actual hoverboards have been in testing for years, and Nike is selling the https://www.nike.com/us/en_us/c/innovation/hyperadapt hyperadapt shoes that tighten automatically.
That last one is actually the closest to the Back of the Future. But also the one that's the most realistic to do
@Sandro89 Take a look at "grown-ups" and tell me they're generally smarter than kids who actually care about the planet, animals,... You know, life, not just a cancerous shortsighted hunger for power and monetary profit at the cost of considering all life expendable resources.
on-topic:
Switch is the only one (of just five of them I somewhat know) that I actually own and ever wanted.
@Ooyah
"realise, organise, colonise".
Have you been reading my manifesto?
@Dezzy
Thankfully not, and I think I'll give it a miss! lol 😆
I disagree with a few of these..... Specifically the Apple watch, and airpods (and maybe echo (I'll do a little bit more research on devices like this) because those 3 weren't anything new, didn't really bring anything that new to the table, it was just an Apple product so people bought it.
I can maybe understand the watch, cause there wasn't any smartwatch good at the time, but it wasn't iPhone 2007 revelation. It was just another apple product. (Hence why wireless charging became so huge when iPhone X had it, even though many other phones had it them)
But I do hope more system are compatible with Xbox adaptive controller, it's so cool to see more and more people from all walks of life have a chance to play games. Heck that deaf girl from the game awards is crazy good at fornite.....like WHAT! It's just so cool!
"smartphone-inspired portability" This right here is how can tell this was written by some millennial who has no idea what they're talking about. No, the portability isn't smartphone inspired. Nintendo has been making portable games since before cell phones were even available on the consumer market. Calculator-inspired portability would be more accurate because that's where Gunpei Yokoi got the idea for a portable game.
iPad definitely a yes, but airpods and apple watch? F#ck dat. Apple finally comes out with decent headphones and people go nuts. The Apple watch is only successful when compared to other smart watches. Not to mention both these devices are only used by people who already have iPhones. They probably do come in handy, you no longer need to pull out your iPhone to flex.
@Ttimer5 Agreed. I am not sure how influential releasing apple versions of existing products actually is.
That so called person of the year is a puppet that will be tossed aside when no longer needed. Politics as normal no matter what side of the debate your on.
I think the adaptive controller has a place on the list. It would of been wonderful for several people I’ve known over the years to play games.
@ItsOKToBeOK Nintendo and Microsoft partnered together on that project which proves just how little you know
@KitsuneNight somebody got majorly tricked by BTTF lolol
The world's first hybrid system. It definitely is one of the most important and influential inventions of this last decade.
No better words can describe what Nintendo has done with the Switch
Why is everyone throwing out these best of the decade articles? The new decade doesn't start until 2021. We still have over a year to go.
@Flowerlark lol old school DS had touch screen and microphone like smartphone and that was 2 gens back. What an epic fail for time to say switch was inspired by cell phones. I'd say it's an upgraded Wii with how joycons are motion sensitive and work far better than the wiimote.
@Sandro89 Her age shouldn't really have an effect on their choice. I think the fact that she's such an involved climate activist is beautiful.
@isellpixels
Part II !
I was actually also having a dig at Blade Runner.
Blade Runner is closer to actual 2019 in some regards but not quite.
Moving ad boards for example things are stil dull and gloomy etc.
2001 is stil the movie that got it mostly right.
No matter how you feel about TIME, Switch rightfully deserves a spot here. Even if portable gaming isn't your thing, you still have to respect games like BotW, Witcher 3 and many others running on a portable device. And the other thing too, if you're more into playing games on a big TV with better sound, the Switch does that too.
Just a awesome device all around and I'm way more interested in the future of hybrid gaming that I am traditional console gaming. Just my personal opinion though.
@Sahnec i think he’s trolling. But failed, so don’t bother...
On the Switch: I do see it as a great product of course. But I fail to see it as important. Or influential. Noone has tried copy it yet. Many have tried to evolve most of the other products. Except the xbox adaptive controller.
@RedBlueCarrots
It’s literally a dongle for an existing solution that has existed since before I was born...and I ain’t young.
@Clabeux Hmm, that’s pretty whack. I thought pretty much all tech company’s played nice about accessibility. The analog sticks are above my pay grade, but, in theory, one should be able to solder up some larger switches directly to an existing Nintendo controller pcb. Generally ability switches have those 3.5mm phono connectors ala control voltage devices. But if they’re just plain old switches underneath the hood, surely they can be stripped, soldered and stop voltage at will just like the rubber button underlay on a gamepad. Might be worth googling to find a solution.
Edit: I’m way overthinking this. 8bitdo has a wireless dongle that allows you to use xbox and playstation controllers on a switch. For about an extra $20, the xbox adaptive controller becomes a switch controller. I have one and the standard xbox controller works effortlessly.
I'd only agree with the iPad, Switch and Xbox Adaptive Controller on that list.
Out of those 10 devices I had only heard, seen, or own 2 (Switch and iPad) of them. Not sure what the other 8 craps are and probably don't care as they are not that important to me.
Another list that most people won't agree with due to tastes, and different definitions of "influential". This is just their opinion. The difference, is that they have a long running magazine that some people take seriously to voice theirs. I personally don't care either way about this list. I was just curious to see their opinion. It has been quite a decade after all.
I'd agree with this, and so it only stands to reason that Nintendo doubled down on this huge success by..... stripping away anything and everything that remotely made the Switch unique or noteworthy in releasing the Switch Lite.
@hihelloitsme Something only a Troll could love.
@SwitchForce not sure I follow.
