One Switch release we're eager to get our hands on in the new year is Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition. If you have fond memories of the multiplayer action-RPG first released on the GameCube back in 2004, you're probably already on board this hype caravan.
Unfortunately, though, its arrival has come to a sudden halt. An update from Square Enix has revealed the remastered edition will no longer be releasing on 23rd January next year, and will instead be pushed back to summer 2020. Below is the full statement from the publisher:
Since announcing Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition, we’ve read so many positive messages filled with encouragement, and all of us on the team would like to thank you for the support you’ve shown us so far.
Today we’re announcing that the release date for the game is being moved to summer 2020. We’ve made the decision to adjust the release date to allow the development team some extra time to make final adjustments to the game to make this the best experience possible.
We know you’ve been waiting patiently for this game, and we hope you’ll continue to support us as you have done so far, over the coming months through to launch.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is coming to PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android devices. You’ll be able to play online with your friends and transfer your save file across all four platforms when the game launches in Summer 2020.
Thank you again, from all of us on the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition team.
As noted above, the decision to delay the game is to ensure it offers the "best experience possible" to players. A neat feature, as stated, is the ability to transfer your save file across all four platforms and you can also play online with your friends.
How do you feel about this delay? Comment down below.

Is it to give them time to remove the ridiculous chalice requirement? Can’t the mog just move faster!? Christ.
First 2019, then early 2020, now mid 2020... I have a feeling this is going to be one of those games that keep getting delayed, only to be a huge disappointment when it actually releases.
Seems like there’s a lot of delays just now. Wonder if there’s anything going on that we don’t know about.
The delay better be worth it. After all it's a remastered, what else are they planning to add to it that hasn't already been add other than to make it run and look better?
When you consider just how crowded the first quarter of 2020 is, this makes sense.
Can't be mad about this delay. With so many game being releases in 2020, makes sense to release the game later. No competition means better chance of selling.
Square enix delaying a final fantasy game ? How odd ..
January 2020 has suddenly lost two games I was looking forward to. Mega Man Z collection got delayed and now Crystal Chronicles gets delayed. Booooo!!
Is there anything left for the month? I honestly don't know. What am I missing?
NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Been waiting so long for this and ugh, it feels like Twilight Princess all over again.
I hope it has a physical release
Will it have local co-op?
@ButterSpill it has neither been confirmed nor denied yet, but usually when a dev team doesn’t highlight local coop and pushes online multiplayer, it usually means it wont be included.
Which will be a bummer tbh, i wonder how cross save progress will be logged, like will multiplayer be only for dungeons? And not as a caravan sharing the same yearly progress?
Much left unsaid, hopefully more light will be shed in the coming months
@Nintendofan83
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore on January 23rd.
With Mega Man Zero/ZX Collection delayed to February and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles delayed to summer 2020, the game may actually have a shot at succeeding now. It’s very niche so it needs some attention. Those other games might not be huge blockbusters but they are popular franchises and a good many consumers may have purchased them instead of Tokyo Mirage Sessions.
@Nintendofan83 TMS #FE is still hitting in January. Atlier Dusk trilogy is coming out. Summer in Mara and Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath too I believe.
I think Square Enix announced this game too early....
just like a lot of their other games.
That's fine. Too many games. Not enough time.
It will be worth it, the music and visuals gives this such a unique vibe! It was a blast in the GC! (And I had to play singleplayer!)
I remember the disappointment when this game was announced. People were still hurt about PlayStation getting the main games in the FF series.
@Starkiller987 My guess is that Square Enix don't want Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles HD to be overlook by the Final Fantasy VII Remake: Part 1. After all that game is coming out around Q1 2020 as well.
@outsider83 When Hironobu Sakaguchi left Squaresoft after Final Fantasy X, that's when I stopped caring about the main Final Fantasy games from that point onward, the series is nothing but just a brand now. Story is lacking, there's just no charm anymore and the battle system feels too much like a Kingdom Hearts without the Disney characters.
@Toy_Link I don't think they even need to announce this game as the Switch is not two screens this time, if anything they could had just give us more remastered of their other games like Front Mission, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Lufia, Grandia III, Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Ogre Battle 64, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Parasite Eve 1 & 2.
It better be worth it, it better run smooth online, because I want that experience that I couldn't get with them bloody GBA controllers and stuff...
@Joriss There's nothing wrong with the original GBA methods in terms of performance except for the fact that it's a very expensive feature. If anything the new online multiplay method for this game would be even worst as Sony and Nintendo had terrible online bandwidth. Sure it's not expensive anymore but with changes comes consequences as well.
The hell is going on with this game? It’s been delayed like 3 times already, its a Gamecube remaster, what’s taking so long? I wonder if they’re having issues with its online coop connectivity or something.
Square Enix heard that I was going to prioritize Tokyo Mirage Sessions in that release window.
Mea maxima culpa.
@ButterSpill Judging by the Tokyo demo that was shown in the past couple of months, it's unlikely. The way they did the menu is an overlay style. Makes it great to play from one console but I don't see it working well with local co-op. MAYBE they could squeeze in two player from one console, but couch co-op gaming is a thing of the past. Only one doing it now is the Switch and even that is slowly dieing..Couch co-op that is. Switch is still going strong.
Buuuh!
I mean.. It want it to be as good as the gc game and look better, but still.. Buuuh!
Of all the games that need couch co-op, this game needs it the most. But it is highly unlikely that will be the reason for the delay, unfortunately.
C'mon, Squeenix! I'm sick and tired of being patient for this one.
I want to play this again co op again so badly I can hardly wait
I hope these delays don't lead to a cancellation or platform jump. That's been known to happen.
I wonder if the game will utilize the Switch phone app for a second screen the way GameCube used the GameBoy, or if multiple Switch units can be used for local co-op.
I for one couldn’t be happier because there is too much anyway- I need to get caught up. I think a lot of these delays are better positioning. There are several games due out beginning of next year that would overlap the fanbase as well as some that just released. The big KH 3 DLC drops Jan/Feb, Star Ocean just released, Pokémon, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, and Trails of Mana Remake. Now this gives me some breathing room
@retro_player_22 they confirmed awhile back there were new areas, bosses, and some other new features, so it’s not a straight remaster. Still, I don’t see how it really needs an extra 6 months, especially 5 weeks before release...
Well that's a bummer. This game was originally coming out around my husband's birthday and he really wanted it. Now I'm gonna have to figure something else out.
I'm ok with this. Looks like it's going to be a Japan exclusive physical release so was going to have to order from Play Asia, I have another few months for my wallet to recover from Christmas.
I'd much rather see a game delayed, rather than rushed out. That being said, I'm a little bummed. January would have been a great release date, as it seems like we get less video games overall throughout the winter months. I'm worried it might get lost in the shuffle releasing during summer, likely next to some high profile games.
Never liked the original. So whatever
@ShadJV The game was planned for 3 different platforms one which is for PC and usually with console game like this being ported to PC, it tends to have performance issues (could be grahpical issue, framerates, UI, etc.) so my guess is that they are trying to make sure it runs great on all platforms before they approve its release. Besides they also don't want players to ignore the game as the FFVII remake is release around the same time of its original delay release.
@retro_player_22 I was responding to your original post.
@retro_player_22 also there was nearly two months between FFCC and FFVIIR. Their releases weren’t that close, especially with how often they drop remasters and remakes. This is not going to be one of their bigger games, it’s more niche like the Chocobo Mystery Dungeon remaster. Besides, if they were worried about releases being two months apart, they’re doing exactly that with KH3:ReMind and FFVIIR anyways.
Edit: oh and this game isn’t coming to PC, the listed platforms are in the article.
Hope this means we get local co-op and moogle carrying the chalice during multiplayer.
To all the "I'd rather it get delayed then blah blah blah" apologist
When a Tripple A company delays a game it's rare that they didn't know it wouldn't be ready by the year they claim it would be beforehand.Stop letting these companies lie to you about a product they expect you to buy.Other games are much more worthy of taking up the time and space in the minds of gamers that actually make thier release dates and are actually honest and transparent about why they're delayed and Square Enix has never been at least to me transparent and honest about that.Final Fantasy 7 Part 1 out of 3,6,231 parts???????Stop letting them push crap on you.
@retro_player_22 I’ve only played FF7 and 9 on the original PlayStation. But I still watched what was going with the series, only because I’ve always liked to pay attention to the industry as a whole. At some point during PS3 era, I started to think that FF game releases no longer felt like an event. So your comment is interesting since FFX was a PS2 release.
As long as it worth the update. I can wait got to many backlogs to get done.
@Nintendofan83 Tokyo Mirage Sessions
Also I'm grateful January is as quiet as it is considering the rest of early 2020 from February to May
