The Switch success stories just keep on coming, as Nintendo reveals that the console enjoyed its best-ever sales week in the US over the Thanksgiving period.
The company's internal data shows that combined sales of both the flagship Nintendo Switch console and the Nintendo Switch Lite reached a total of more than 830,000 in the US over the course of the week. Naturally, the sales were boosted by Black Friday offerings; Nintendo's main focus was a Switch bundle which included a digital copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for free.
Incidentally, the successful week has pushed lifetime sales of the Nintendo Switch to 17.5 million in the Americas alone. As of 30th September 2019, the console had shifted 41.67 million units worldwide - it'll be interesting to get an updated tally in the new year.
Switch software has also been having a good time in the Americas as of late. Pokémon Sword and Shield have sold a combined total of more than 3 million, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 8.5 million, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has reached 8 million, and Super Mario Odyssey has shifted 6.5 million copies.
Phwoar.

Not to shabby.
60 million is within reach me thinks.
I can't imagine how much the Switch would have sold if Nintendo actually tried with their Black Friday deals.
Wow what a number!! It's so great that there's such a demand for the Switch even without mainstream discounts!
@redd214,
Yes why discount when demand is so high.
@PBandSmelly
Remember how the DS was ridiculed ?
@westman98 They did try. They tried to make money, and they succeeded.
@KitsuneNight Console will hit 100 fairly easily if next year's first party output replicates the launch year (which I reckon will have obvious parallels) It's already the least powerful console on the market. Releasing more powerful competitors isn't going to have an adverse effect on the console if they bring the games.
Nothing can stop the switch now.
Just keep releasing good games and fix the online.
@GrailUK
Yeah the argument that the new generation wil tank the NX, never made much sense to me to be honest.
The PS2 kept on trucking till 2013.
The DS mutated in to the 3DS.
As long as the games keep coming and the price is righ,t this machine wil sell.
Because it's a hybrid and can be a main machine, a console or a portable machine.
And the underpowered argument don't make much sense to me either.
It's basically a portable ps3.
How is that a bad thing ?
Where are the naysayers now? Where are they? They're all gone because fact: The Switch prints money for Nintendo. It is a bonafide success.
@Mordridakon
The naysayers are now complaining its "underpowered"
As if that ever meant anything
The Snes and ps2 were also "underpowered"
it's not how powerfull the hardware is, it's what the developers do with it that matters.
I can't imagine what those numbers would be if the Black Friday deals were actually good!
Wow. Love it, phenomenal turnaround Nintendo.
If anything, the extreme momentum of the Switch will make it hard for the PS5 (or XB4) to have as big of a splash as they did in the PS4/XBO launch window.
And if Nintendo manages to pull off a major release for 2020 Christmas? Another non-remake Mario, Zelda or Metroid?
Only 3 million more and it beats the SNES right??
@GrailUK Yeah... But I think if they really want to take attention away from competitors they'll need s-tier games like BOTW or Mario Odyssey. It'd be cool to see something that impactful that isn't a Mario or Zelda, but I imagine it'll probably be a Mario or Zelda.
You can expect Switch to hit 50 million worldwide post Xmas if not more.
I suspect sales will then slow down around summer next year prior to x box 2 and PS5 but 70 million is doable
@roboshort I'm not sure man. They are being so prolific that I'm sure we will see a new IP or 2 next year.
Everything hinges on Nintendo making a new Zelda game. I looked at my paws this morning and saw the future. The next installment will have Zelda and Link get married and have a kid. Yes, you heard about it here first. The probability of this being the future is about 2.5% which is almost guaranteed, I think.
@westman98 people rewarded the lite for having almost no deals. I just couldn't believe it when its limitations were the same price as an a xbox one with a game, or PS4 with 3. I took the xbone naturally. Bramd loyalty I guess.
@MrVariant
The Mario Kart 8 DX Switch bundle sold far more than the Switch Lite during Black Friday.
@MrVariant you can’t chalk it to brand loyalty when the Wii U flopped so badly last gen. Brand loyalty keeps the same people coming regardless how good or bad the product is. The Switch is engaging a whole new user base with its own merits.
@GrailUK I hope you are right. I guess they released Arms the first year and Astral Chain this year so maybe we’ll get something new next year too
Nintendo doesn’t tend to pump nearly as much money into new IPs as Sony does, though, which is too bad cause it makes it harder for them to take off
@Tharsman Wii U was a terrible idea. Huge box for a controller with a screen? Less stuff for non-gamers as opposed to wii fit/ring fit adventure and Labo was an affordable VR/arts and crafts.
You are right, but I felt brand loyalty was why so many flocked to more expensive Nintendo, which yeah commonly is called any type of game like coke for soda.
@westman98 yeah you got me; I changed my mind on the lite when everyone did better otherwise, including Nintendo. It can't even play brain age, which I am hyped for.
We all have to remember in USA Xmas hasn't come yet so those numbers will only grow. And to all the Lite wasn't intended as a Switch replacement so get off the high horse here. They already stated some games will not be same on the Lite and yet clearly some people can't seem to remember that at all here.
@Samwise7
Snes sold 49 million units.
@roboshort Labo and Ring Fit (the latter doing rather well!)
Amazing numbers just wait until after Christmas. We have a big week coming up before Christmas in the states so sakes should skyrocket if there are some deals. I just love it because Nintendo is finally seeing success and the install base is increasing rapidly just wish more people would try the online:(
@westman98 agreed! The deals where not special. I was looking for another pro controller, but never found a great deal.
@KitsuneNight Oh right thanks! Still not many more though. 49m seems so low for a machine that had such an impact I think!
@Samwise7 a lot less gamers back then. Back then it wasn't cool to play video games and our favorite hobby was kinda scuffed at by most. I remember my mom being talked to at school several times because of my love for video games and the teachers perception of it being a waste of time. Granted some people still feel that way but a lot of us grew up and still love this hobby so it has become more widely accepted. The older folks like 60 plus(not all in that age bracket) will still act like it's a thing for just kids🤷♂️
