Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for 28th October - 3rd November, revealing that Luigi's Mansion 3 couldn't quite make it to the top spot.
The game sold more than 150,000 copies in its opening week, but even that total couldn't defeat Persona 5 Royal which claimed just over 200,000 sales on PS4. Ring Fit Adventure is still performing nicely, too, managing to stay close to the top in third position, and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 has debuted in fifth.
Here are the top 10 (first numbers are this week's estimated sales, followed by total sales):
1) [PS4] Persona 5 Royal (Atlus) {2019.10.31} - 201.448 / NEW
2) [NSW] Luigi's Mansion 3 (Nintendo) {2019.10.31} - 150.649 / NEW
3) [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo) {2019.10.18} - 51.143 / 183.685
4) [PS4] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (Sony Interactive Entertainment) {2019.10.25} - 37.905 / 155.575
5) [NSW] Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 (Sega) {2019.11.01} - 19.438 / NEW

Great hardware and software sales for Nintendo
Luigi’s mansion sales considered good for the series opening? Although it is probably strong on the Eshop it seems lower than I expected....
Persona 5 has become a big thing there, I am waiting for it’s Western Release having not gotten very far on the PS3 version.
However I somehow feel Luigi’s Mansion 3 may squeeze past in the long term. I feel only the dedicated P5 fans will buy it and many will have done so this week. LM3 May see more constant sales over time. Although I’d need to dive deeper into historical series sales to confirm that theory.
Mario and Sonic BOMBA. Holy moly, it done that poorly? Maybe it is really the last Olympic game after all
@gamer89 LM series
Boy what a bad launch. It’ll cross a million worldwide, but this is Luigi’s main squeeze, and a really great game too, definitely deserved better sales than that.
If they could’ve released maybe 2-3 weeks earlier, I feel like sales would’ve been much better. How many people were prone to pay $60 for a spooky game on November 1st? Especially when it has to compete with better, discounted evergreen Nintendo titles?
Just a bummer player #2 couldn’t be #1 for once. All eyes now on Pokémon.
@Tantani
Launch sales are lower than Dark Moon (280k vs. 150k), but higher than the first game (116k).
@gamer89 no, I am asking how good of an opening this is compared to LG 1 and 2 openings
Glad to see Luigis Mansion do great across the globe, overall it looks like it'll be the best selling game in the trilogy. Also nice to see RFA still doing well too.
@Toy_Link oh ok
So it might be comparable to dark moon when adding the eshop for both
I’m still confident, that we’ll see P5 on Switch one day. If Scramble is going to tell the afterstory, why not release the prequel too?
Those Pokémon figures are going to be insane. I'm predicting between the two games, they'll hit 250,000 in opening week. Or am I overestimating Pokémon's popularity?
@gamer89 Yeah, I feel like SEGA releasing a demo was a mistake for sales.
P5 is basically a must play if into turn based jRPGs (also, Cold Steel 3). But played it back in 2017... care about re-playing rehash on PS4 as much as all the ones on Switch - Zero. Hoping Scramble is not a complete disaster
Nice for LM3... It did pretty Ok for a LM game.
It will be a great counter balance for Death Standing in my next week "Home+Commute" set up 👍
@Tantani i dunno this is only Japan's chart. I was under the impression it was doing at least solidly okay in the west?
@Toy_Link that's weirdly promising. It's not uncommon for launch sales to be initially lower than 3ds predecessor I feel because of higher cost on Switch but at the same time i feel a lot ended outselling even their cheaper mobile predecessor in the long run? I could be wrong though but I feel I've seen that scenario happen a few time on Switch with people indeed making to get a game but buying them with slight delays due to the need to save more for them since it costs more than 3ds games and such.
@Matthew010
Pokemon Sun/Moon sold 1.9 million retail copies in its launch week back in 2016. Pokemon X/Y sold 2 million retail copies in its launch week back in 2013.
With the immense rise of digital sales from 3DS to Switch and the more recent impact of the NSO vouchers, Pokemon Sword/Shield won't perform quite that well at retail. Expect it to sell 1.2-1.5 million retail copies at launch.
Luigi's Mansion 2 sold ~300,000 retail copies at launch, so there was definitely a big drop off for Luigi's Mansion 3. Digital/voucher sales + holiday legs should definitely help overall sales, especially as we approach late November/December.
Persona 5 Royale had a great debut, Ring Fit Adventure continues to have amazing legs, and Pokemon Switch Lite sold great without affecting OG Switch sales.
Pretty terrible launch sales for Mario & Sonic 2020. It's the 2nd worst launch for a Mario & Sonic game - even the 2016 Wii U version had a better launch. It's going to need great legs this holiday and during the summer 2020 Olympica to see decent lifetime sales.
Wow. 120,000 Switches sold this past week in Japan.
Luigi's Mansion 3 had an ok launch, but it'll be an evergreen title for years to come. 100k less in Japan on launch week compared to Dark Moon won't even be a blip on the radar of total performance.
@Agramonte
I agree, but with a caveat.
I wouldn't dream of spending another $60 for the exact same game I already own on PS4... DLC included or not. Likewise, I wouldn't dream of spending another $60 for the exact same Switch game re-released that I already own and played on Switch.
However (and here's the caveat), I would rebuy a game for Switch that I already own on PS4, because its adding value. Its bringing something to the table I want (portable hybrid version that can be both a console and handheld game at the same time). If a TV-only game releases on Switch, even if I already own it, I'm there. I'll sell the other copy and cover some of the cost.
But ya, if they want to repackage and resell Persona 5 to me, I'm on board with that, provided it's on Switch. That's value added. But reselling the same exact game for the same exact same console I already own, without bringing anything new to the table like hybrid play? Not a chance.
Basically, if they expect me to double dip and drop another $60 for the same game I already own, it needs to be a Switch release (unless it's already on Switch, obviously). Otherwise, not interested.
Those 120k Switches that sold in a week though.
Hot hot hot.
@Matthew010
Anything under about 1.2m (combined) will be seen as a major disappointment for a mainline Pokemon game in Japan.
Gutted how long we have to wait for P5R... need to avoid spoilers now.
@JaxonH Na, that I can play it at home or on the Bus really changes little.
It is boring for me to do the same thing all over again. Even more on games that are story driven and I already know how it will end.
The only extra a 'hybrid" version would brings to the table is that I can be bored in more locations instead of just at home... that is not added value in my book.
I also do not play 1 game at a time. Even when "hybrid" actually brings something new to the table does not mean I'll use it. I will not be playing Luigi Mansion 3 at home (or digging for my old Ps4 copy of P5) once Death Standing Lands on Friday.
Wow PlayStation 4 truly died when the Switch came out
Imagine how many more copies Atlus would have shifted if Persona 5 Royal came to the Switch?
One could dream of playing Persona 5 while laying in bed... but I’ll settle for the classic Final Fantasy games instead on the Switch.
P5R — hard pass until it’s a bargain game.
Persona is on course to be the next final fantasy. I got Persona 5 on PS 3 too, dont own a PS4. But i'm sad Persona 5 royal (or regular Persona 5) is not out on Switch. I don't like dynasty warriors games...
Guys, P5 isn't coming to Switch. Get over it.
I'm surprised how well Modern Warfare is doing. Great game.
@Lando_ i don't see Persona 5 ever coming to Switch at this point all us Switch owners will get is this Dynasty Warriors spin off game with Persona 5 characters
@Agramonte
If it's a favorite game of mine I'll likely not be bored playing it. And I dont have to play it right away. I've always wanted my favorite games on a mobile system.
Half the time I haven't finished the games anyways. Most times in fact. Having portably would actually enable me to want to play it and want to finish it (lose interest in 90% of TV only games I play, because I get sidetracked with a portable game when I'm somewhere else, but can then dock and keep playing once I'm at home, and then I just never go back because I never have to stop playing the hybrid game).
But even if I just played a game and beat it, if it's a game I love I want a hybrid version. Even if I'm not playing it immediately. DKC Tropical Freeze- favorite platformer of all time. Bought on U, bought again on Switch, enjoyed it every bit as much playing again.
Well we can definitely tell these numbers for systems are off by a bit since Nintendo announced they passed 10 million units in JP.
@FX102A nah, persona 5 broke the membrane on the series in the west, but smt js still a popular series with over 20 plus games total. 5 was just the most financially successful. The rerelease honestly will hit with those who played the game and loved it, which is a huge amount of people, and who missed the game in 2017, which is also someone.
Luigi's Mansion though, is Nintendo's game of the month. I don't think it'll have literally any staying power. How many kids can you imagine being like I want a switch and I want one of the 1 or 2 games I get with it to be Luigi's Mansion? Unless they have a speech impediment that makes them say Luigi's Mansion instead of Pokemon, smash, Zelda, or Mario, then no one. Absolutely zero kids.
@KBuckley27 Hey, these dynasty warriors spin offs are fun! I like them. Though I have a PS4 and a switch so, yeah, I don't have a dog in the race. I'm getting both.
@JaxonH You know, I agree. I rented P3 and bought Fes and that seemed like a good deal. I bought P4 and bought P4 Golden on the Vita for slightly cheaper and that was fine because it's honestly a much better game and was cheaper. If P5R is 60 bucks, even knowing that it'll be way better than the oG because the things missing were really, really missing, that's a hard sell
Keep in mind Halloween only very recently started becoming more popular in Japan. Only within the last decade or so. It's not an officially recognized holiday and most Japanese people don't have more than a vague idea what it's about.
The spooky Halloween aesthetic just isn't as popular here. But it's a first party Nintendo game. I don't remotely doubt it will outsell P5 Musou in the long run. At least on Switch.
@Agramonte I dunno the rereleases of persona always add features and parts that honestly it's weird looking back and thinking why the hell they weren't included in the first place. Especially P3 to Fes. Hell Fes got a total combat overhaul and an extra 30 hour game stapled on it.
P5 looks to be, well, less, but still it adds stuff that felt missing in the OG so I wouldn't call it a rehash exactly. It's closer than P3 to being a money grab, but P4 Golden added about as much as P5R does and there's no way of given the choice Is choose the OG p4 over golden.
@CheapCheepBeach one more winter Olympics please before the official cancel.
@Xansies
If it's anything like LM2, it should be an evergreen. It sold ~2 million post Christmas 2013 (selling overall 5 million+).
Super happy to see Story of Seasons doing so well, holding it's own against some pretty popular titles. Now just to wait for a western release!♥
@JaxonH P5 was my favorite turn base jRPG games in 2017. Right now, Cold Steel 3 is. They keep on coming and massive back log. I rather find a new "favorite game" than keep playing old ones.
Yeah, I do not have that problem. If I really like a game, I find a way and keep playing it till I see the ending. It takes over - whatever is on my other systems are background noise.
