Despite the fact that the Switch is in full swing and how offers an entry-level option in the form of the Switch Lite, Nintendo's Doug Bowser continues to refuse to call time on the console's forerunner, the 3DS.
The veteran handheld is selling dismally, software support has effectively ended (at least from Nintendo's standpoint) and services are slowly but surely being cancelled. Despite all of this, Bowser maintains that the 3DS remains a viable 'entry point' for younger players.
Speaking to The Verge, he said:
We continue to look at the 3DS family, both hardware and games, as a strong entry point for some consumers. And we’re seeing that. As long as consumer demand is there, we’ll continue to provide both hardware and software on the front.
When quizzed at what point it could be said that the 3DS is finally dead as a platform, Bowser replied:
We’re certainly not going to say it today. I think time will tell. We will continue to support 3DS this holiday and into 2020.
On one hand, of course Bowser isn't going to come out and declare the 3DS done and dusted – not while Nintendo still has inventory of the console it wants to shift over the festive period. But in the cold light of day, the machine has little in the way of a solid future; software support has all but dried up and it's almost impossible to find brand-new versions of anything but the 2DS variants of the system now. Still, it has an amazing library of games, so that's certainly something.
Perhaps 2020 is when Nintendo will finally pluck up the courage to bid the 3DS family a fond farewell.

Why should he? There's no reason to stop selling. The Game Boy Advance was still sitting on store shelves for YEARS after DS came out. If people are still buying the games Nintendo has no reason to stop selling them.
And if memory serves, Sony didn't pull the final plug on PS2 until just before PS4 came out. Like, 2012ish.
Why on earth does everyone want this wonderful little console to die so badly? There’s been something unnecessarily cruel about the way this site and the general public clamors for it to be stamped out.
"We will continue to support 3DS this holiday and into 2020."
I've seen 3 or 4 Black Friday ads so far, can't recall a single 3DS console or game. With support like that...

Best Buy - I stand corrected, four 3DS games.

@SlowPokemon Because we want Nintendo to focus on the Switch since it is newer and no one is really supporting the 3DS now anyway.
Long live the 3DS. I am still trying to get some titles for cheap. Recently brought Mario Tennis Open, Mario Golf: World Tour and Puzzles and Dragons Z + Super Mario Bros. Edition. Need to get a few others like Stella Glow, Bravely Second, Bowser's Inside Story and Extra Epic Yarn.
@SlowPokemon It’s not that people want the 3DS to die. I think it’s more so that it’s painfully obvious that Nintendo is done supporting the 3DS with new games and they just won’t admit it. The canned PR speech they keep giving rings hollow when we all know they’ve pretty much put the 3DS out to pasture to die and have no intention of bringing anything new to the table. I think people just want them to admit it and stop dancing around what we all know to be true.
It should be transitioned to a fully supported legacy system. New software should NOT be the focus. But getting a 2DS to market at around $60 with a HUGE SD card would be a good goal. With retail quitting on the system, Nintendo could make money off eshop sales for another decade. With some price reductions, there are probably two dozen excellent DS family titles I missed that I would happily download at a fair price.
The system could continue to provide a revenue stream and give access to some of the greatest games ever for a solid half decade or more.
@SlowPokemon Totally agree...I adore 3DS!
If you’ve owned a 3DS for a while (I’ve had one since launch), I doubt there’s much more the system has to give, but for someone who’s never had one or for just a short time there is a vast catalogue of must play games on it, that are now available at a budget price.
@Heavyarms55 To be fair, Sony pledges at least ten years of support for all of its home consoles.
PSOne: 1994 - 2006
PS2: 2000 - 2013
PS3: 2006 - 2017
Why are people so obsessed with Nintendo "admitting" the 3DS is dead? If you're done with it, move on. If it's so obvious to you, you don't need Nintendo to put it into words for you.
I love my 3DS and still play it now and then. Most of my games that I have are for it too.
Being discontinued is not the same as being dead.
For example the GameBoy is not dead, only discontinued
As long as there are people playing those consoles they will never die! Long live the 3DS (and the other too as well )
The 3DS is excellent. There's a wealth of great exclusive titles on it! The DS/3DS will continue to attract people for many, many years.
@SlowPokemon because if it had died when it should have Luigis Mansion 1 would be on the Nintendo Switch right now along side AlphaDreams last projects
Why is the news media so intent on burying the 3DS? Slow news day? I will never understand that it's a great system let people buy that want to buy it, don't keep running it down into the dirt with these idiot questions an articles.
I've written a list of games I still want to pick up for 3DS. None are too expensive. I think the only ones still holding their RRP prices are Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga and Ultimate NES remix.
Honestly I still play my 2DS XL all the time. For me it's all about the games. I love playing Zelda OoT and even DS games like Chrono Trigger.
Plus a 2DS with a free built in game is dirt cheap and a great entry for young gamers. My son isn't even two yet but I can imagine in a couple of years my 3DS is the system I will start him out on. Soo many classics
This site sure has an obsession with 3DS death. I swear articles like this keep popping up two sometimes three days a week. Killing it isn't going to suddenly make the switch better than it already is. Besides it's not the system that dies. It's the game development for said system.
My Nes hasn't had a new game made for it in decades but do i still play and enjoy it? Of course!
If you're done with the 3DS then be done but stop acting like the thing has to die or Nintendo needs to make it official.
I look forward to the switch must die articles the very day after whatever's next gets announced. Sheesh!
Nintendo just put out a very long announcement about Black Friday and holiday sales. No mention of 3DS, it's over.
https://nintendoeverything.com/nintendo-details-black-friday-2019-deals/
I want them to add GBA virtual console then they could mill it
@Heavyarms55 I want them to add gba virtual console to keep it going. Also I think they could add a few more games then call it quits
@RetiredR citra emulator cough cough
@Zelda1433 I love the Ed's because I can play the nes zelda, links adventure, a link to the past, oot, majoras mask, link between worlds, minish cap, oracle games and links awakening. It's the perfect zelda console after the gamecube
Even if Nintendo suits are planning to discontinue the 3DS post-holiday 2019, I doubt Bowser would admit it until the 3DS is discontinued. It would only hurt 3DS hardware and software sales.
I pulled out my New XL model just yesterday for the first time in a while and forgot how much I adore it. It's such a nice piece of tech. The stereoscopic 3D. The feel of the buttons and circle pad, that massive screen...definately one of my top systems of all time which I will keep and treasure forever. I have about 65 games on it. There are so many good ones.
I think it can still have some legs as a budget system especially if they cut the price on the New 2DS XL down to $119 and the 2DS to $60. There are still plenty of games on the system that could get the Selects treatment as well.
@SlowPokemon I think it comes from a sense that the WiiU suffered because of 3DS (which is true) and people fearing the same happening to Switch at the beginning when big games Switch owners were hoping to get when it was still sparse were going to 3DS instead. It's obviously irrelevant now, but I think the "fear the 3DS" mentality is just embedded into the core Nintendo fan's brain at this point.
3DS is not dead for me.
3DS is still alive.
I still hunting for Japanese exclusive 3DS games and a few PAL 3DS games to enlarge my games library. 🤓
I always felt there was a lot more untapped value in an older hardware than the industry gave credit for. I'm probably not the best sample, I still have all my old systems in one state or another, but the immediate generation could still have some value as a venue if they let.
As stated in the article and going off the fact that I've seen plenty of 2DS units in the wild, I fully expect Nintendo and retailers to push them this holiday season. I suspect the family will sadly but understandably fade out in 2020.
To clarify: I love the 3DS family and still routinely play my systems, but it's clear that any new software releases from Nintendo are clearly not a priority now.
Oh it'll go eventually, but Nintendo has a history of leaving older systems and its games up for grabs a while longer. Its quite nice of them to do. 😊
Plus there's still a few games we'd like to nab for it.
Which means please keep buying the system until stock runs out, but they are done with development.
@PickledKong64 Me too!
@Zeldafan79 Well actually, there have been a few made and some company is reviving Metal Storm on it.
@invictus4000 what rpgs do you have
Basically keep buying out the old stock.
I love the 3DS why all the hate? I used to play on it all the time with friends. A good ol' game of Mario kart 7, hearing a blue shell and h ave anxiety kick in, and just have a good time. I even got the "new" model when it came out. And in my opinion the new 3DS xl galaxy edition is prettier than any switch lite.
@Heavyarms55 true i'm still interested in some games I have't played on the 3ds yet plus I still enjoy playing Animal crossing New Leaf on a daily basis. Even though I have 2 Nintendo Switches, Well that might change when Animal Crossing New Horizon comes out.
tbh i want more connectivity between the switch & 3ds.
@Gwynbleidd
3DS software sales:
July 1st - September 30th 2018: 3.32 million
July 1st - September 30th 2019 1.12 million
Both hardware and software sale have fell for the 3DS
The PS1 and PS2 were around for years longer than they should have, it's a product of success. I am pretty sure Nintendo is just trying to sell off the last of their stock supplies these days anyways.
REGGIE. YOU DON'T WORK AT NINTENDO ANYMORE.
I would totally buy that Japanese pastel pink 2DS bundled with Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn for $49.99-69.99, especially during next year's spring/summer slump.
3DS still has a huge library of games that tons of people like myself haven't played and may never get a chance to, so unless Nintendo ports everything to Switch, continuing to lower the price of the 3DS/2DS bundles will get people like myself to bite.
It's been several years since I was able to StreetPass a lot of people, and that was at an airport.
I've been to giant hotels in major cities, comic-book conventions, and out in public since then, but at most, I'd get one or two StreetPasses. Usually, I don't get any.
I'm trying to fill out the rest of the puzzle boards, but at this rate, I might have to use my Play Coins if I want to complete them.
@Kalmaro that true it time for Nintendo to start really focusing in Switch and stop pretending that the 3DS is still alive almost all the game that released in the 3DS in 2018 and this year have been a comercial failure.
@Toy_Link this is a consequence of the sucess of the Switch, lot of people that have 3DS is not longer buying games or playing for them because the Switch can be both a handheld and home console at same time, why i gonna spend my money in a handheld console that is particulary dead now that i can play my games in both as a handheld or a home console.
My Target's still got a 2DS XL display unit and plenty of 3DS games. (I only had the regular 3DS so I never realized how nice the XL feels...I was tempted, but then was like "Wait I want a Switch.") I think there are still parents picking it up or buying their kids 3DS games since they can't afford a Switch.
Well that console was a big hit so yea
Played Strange Journey, Persona Q and Persona Q2 on it so far this year and currently playing through Etrian Odyssey Nexus. Q2 is probably my personal game of the year so I'm more than happy with this year on my 3DS.
Stop bashing 3DS. I shouldn’t even have to say that to a company called NintendoLife. It’s a great system with a massive library of awesome games. Quit being Switch elitists.
After reading this article I bought myself a spare 2ds xl. It came with installed tomodachi and physical copies of pokemon moon and what seems to be a holy grail: teddy together, lol
As someone who recently buy FE Awakening on the e-shop and wants to buy FE Fates Birthright physically (and later the other two versions), I cannot support the discontinuity of the New 3DS/2DS and its games.
I couldn't buy a 3DS until 2014 due to things I was dealing with, so I have had to catch up with the 3DS games, and I still have games I want to buy besides FE Fates.
Why are Nintendo fans so obsessed with the death of the 3DS?
Okay Nintendo Life, since you are so OBSESSED with killing the 3ds line, constant article after article, I am going to buy a 2DS XL, thanks Nintendo Life! you have constantly brought it up and reminded me over that the 3DS has a vast library of games that I missed out on some games. Thanks
@PickledKong64
Just straight up RPGs?
Dragon Quest VII
Dragon Quest VIII
Ocarina of Time 3D
Majoras Mask 3D
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
Fire Emblem Awakening
Fire Emblem Fates
Fantasy Life
Zelda Links Awakening (GBC)
Zelda Oracle of Seasons (GBC)
Zelda Minish Cap (GBA)
Pokemon Red (GB)
Fire Emblem (GBA)
Zelda (NES)
Zelda II (NES)
Chrono Trigger (DS)
Final Fantasy IV (DS)
...just to name a few of the traditional RPGs. Then there's a ton of pseudo RPG adventure games too like:
Shantae (GBC)
Shantae Risky's Revenge (DS)
Shantae and the Pirates Curse
RPG Maker Fes...
The list goes on and on and on. I have about that many platformers, adventures, shooters, fighters, and art ones too. The 3DS is just so awesome!
@Gwynbleidd
Moving the goalpost, eh?
I already answered gave you some statistics about how 3DS software is selling at a downward trend compared to 2018 (and 3DS software sales were already lower in 2018 than 2017), so I'll let you answer my question.
What is stopping Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition from selling 500k this holiday season? I would assume that of the 13 million or so Wii U's out there the majority still work and most of those Wii U's don't have a copy of RE4 Wii downloaded from the Wii U Eshop. What is stopping 500k Wii U owners from buying 500k copies of one of the most acclaimed titles of all time?
honestly if he wants to continue to sell this great handheld he is gonna have to think of ideas to sell the system, add new things onto it instead of the horrendous annoying "system stability", actually fix the look?? And add new games on it.
But, that's if he actually wants to pull the work for this handheld to stay alive, i wouldn't have a problem seeing the Nintendo 3DS living, it's just -you gotta work for it. Also, this is just a theory; but i believe he is doing this, because the old president actually worked on this system, and it was a bigger success, than possibly the nintendo switch? although that wouldn't make sense, when the switch sold allot of copies -i just trying to understand why, -i mean i have no problem with my baby staying alive. I'm just curious to why??
Finally; they should seriously work on making games for the nintendo switch instead of porting so many damn indie games, or games that are from different systems. It's quite tiring to see that -i wanna see a nintendo titles for the switch, -yes i know about the other titles okay. I am just saying.
We need a setting to hide these "The 3ds isn't getting new games but some people still like it" posts. It's a budget system with a huge library that fits in your pocket. Plenty of people are still buying it and enjoying it even though it's an older console. I find it fills a different need than the Switch does anyway, even if I generally prefer the Switch. I'm not worrying about when Doug Bowser or anyone else will officially declare my old system dead.
Just let the thing live, it's clearly not taking anything away from the Switch. They'll be no new major titles, but Nintendo could pop a few more games in its Nintendo Selects line to sell on the cheap. I'd definately pick up a few more titles if they did.
I'm still amassing a 3DS game library. It's an awesome system. Keep it going.
Even owning a brand nex Switch Lite, i have every intention of buying a 3ds. The game library is amazing ! So much games i want to play ! Especially since i never owned a Nintendo DS either and it's backward compatible !
@invictus4000 tha is man! Yeah I under appreciated the 3ds in it's time. I loaded it with a bunch of virtual console games. It's how I played super metroid and earthbound!
@SlowPokemon because it feels dishonest to buy it and not make new games. They could port the wiiware but nope. Better chance of $1 virtual console.
