Tyrogue Evolution Banner

On your quest to catch every available Pokémon in the Pokémon GO Pokédex, you will get used to encountering monsters that behave a little differently to the rest. Tyrogue and its personal fight club of evolutions are a good example – a Pokémon that you’ll never see in the wild and one subject to some not immediately clear evolution rules. In this guide, we’ll help you find a Tyrogue and better understand how it will evolve.

How to get Tyrogue in Pokémon Go

Tyrogue Pokedex Entry

Players who know their Pokémon history will know that Tyrogue (Pokédex #236) was one of a number of ‘baby’ Pokémon introduced in the Johto region Gameboy Color games Pokémon Gold and Pokemon Silver. These Pokémon helped to flesh out some popular evolutionary lines among the original 151 – Pokémon daycare eggs received from Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee (and newcomer Hitmontop) would hatch into a new common ancestor Pokémon: Tyrogue.

Appropriately then, In Pokémon GO, Tyrogue is an egg-exclusive Pokémon. As with all other ‘baby’ Pokémon, you’ll never encounter it in the wild (unless Niantic choose to stage a special event). Instead, it hatches from 5km and 7km eggs. (Note: baby Pokémon haven’t always hatched from 7km eggs, and future game updates may remove them from this group).

As you can see from our egg distance guide, there are a lot of other potential hatches from 5km eggs (55 at last count), so it may take you some time to luck into hatching your Tyrogue – 7km eggs have better odds (until Niantic mixes up the hatching list).

On the bright side, egg hatches are guaranteed to have a good spread of IVs (the stats relayed in the ‘appraisal’ screen) – plus, you’ll get a handy amount of Tyrogue candy along with every one you hatch.

How to obtain and hatch 5km and 7km eggs

  • 5km eggs may be randomly dispensed by spinning the sign on a Pokéstop or Gym (along with 2km and 10km eggs)
  • 7km eggs are received in gifts sent from other Pokémon GO players (in your profile > friends section)
  • You can only carry a maximum of nine eggs at a time – eggs will not drop if you already have nine eggs
  • Once you’ve got the egg you want, stick it in an incubator and go for a walk – rinse and repeat until you get your Tyrogue

Tyrogue Evolution: How to get Hitmontop, Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee

Just as getting Tyrogue is reminiscent of the games it originally featured in, its branching evolution options are handled in a way inspired by (but not exactly identical to) the rules of the handheld series. Whereas those games determine the evolution based on the Attack and Defense stats of your Tyrogue, in Pokémon GO specific Attack, Defense and HP stats are associated with each evolution:

  • Hitmonlee is associated with Attack
  • Hitmonchan is associated with Defense
  • Hitmontop is associated with HP

Thankfully, checking a Pokémon’s IVs has become very simple since a July 2019 update to the appraisal feature – so there's no need to use an IV Checker tool to figure out what you're going to get. It’s now a simple case of checking the appraisal feature on your Pokémon's status page, and seeing which bar (Attack, Defense, HP) is longest.

Between bar length and the icon provided on the ‘evolve’ button, the screenshots below clearly illustrate how you can now easily tell which Tyrogue evolution you will get for your 25 candies:

Tyrogue To Hitmonlee Stats Example
  • If Attack IVs are highest, your Tyrogue will become a Hitmonlee
Tyrogue To Hitmonchan Stats Example
  • If Defense IVs are highest, your Tyrogue will become a Hitmonchan
Tyrogue To Hitmontop Stats Example
  • If HP IVs are highest, your Tyrogue will become a Hitmonchan

But what if your Tyrogue has two or more highest IVs of equal value? You will then receive a random evolution from among the valid options, For example:

  • If Attack and Defense are equal, your Tyrogue could be either a Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan
  • If Attack, Defense and HP are equal, your Tyrogue will evolve into Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan or Hitmontop

Getting all three evolutions is a project that will take a while to complete - however, it is worth noting that unlike Tyrogue, all three evolutions can be encountered in the wild.

Happy hunting (and hatching)!
