The Evercade Handheld System Will Get New Retro-Style Indie Games, As Well As Old Classics

No thank you. Frankly, I don't need another device that offers the same games I can get everywhere else. This might of been interesting 4 years ago. Not today. The HDMI output though is a cool feature though I admit.

I actually like this thing, and if got stuff like Spelunky I'd be up for buying it. I'm not paying £60 plus £14.99 a cart for what is essentially a slightly better version of those bootleg chinese knock offs though.

There are some legendary games in those collections but there are also a lot of duds, especially in the Atari stuff. I am intrigued by the idea, but unless they can get some heavier hitters onboard I don't see this doing anything but carving a niche market.

80 quid for the console and any 3 game packs seems like a pretty good deal to me. Granted the whole thing becomes pointless if you can just get the same collections on Switch but I do like the console and what it's trying to do. Hope it's successful for them.

I like the idea of new retro styles games making it onto cartridge but i'm not sold on the system. It looks terrible. They should of bundled this into a console not a handheld and it would of been really cool.

The D-Pad looks to be the real deal breaker.

Well, I guess that justifies the 16:9 screen. Not all indies are made equal though, so it will be interesting to see what it's actually getting.

Yes I hope indie hits like Shovel Knight, Freedom Planet, The Messenger, Hollow Knight, Undertale, and Terraria make it to the handheld especially since those are everywhere nowadays.

Honestly, this has the same achilles heel that the Switch has in terms of its library... a lack of retro Nintendo games.

I'm telling ya (and I've been "telling ya" for some time now), this is what Nintendo, Sega and especially Konami should have been doing with their "Mini" systems imo, which obviously means I think they should have included working cartridge/card slots on their systems and let gamers use mini games on them (compilations of old games and brand new 16-bit games alike). With the PC-Engine "Mini" in particular they wouldn't have had to shrink anything and could have even let the people who bought that system play all the original HuCards too. Such a missed opportunity imo.

Now, back to the Evercade: I like the idea of the system, clearly, but I'm just not completely sold on the actual design of the thing, and that's a huge factor to me.

Honestly I would be about 100 times more interested in this device if it were a GBA clone with a modern brightness screen.

I'm trying to figure out if this has anything to do with Nintendo. Does it play NES and SNES games?

@Heavyarms55 Yeah this reminds me of the Neo Geo X. Some good ideas with poor execution that ultimately only appeals to a few hardcore retro enthusiasts.

@BeefSanta It's like an Ouya but you're buying the retro or indie games on cartridges instead of downloading them.

@JayJ Yeah I am just not that interested in the retro classics they have on here. 80s arcade games are well before my time. I grew up with Game Boy, GBA, N64 and Gamecube. That's the nostalgia I have and hope to see more support for. Game Boy and GBA have about 17,000 emulators but like, no decent clone hardware. I'd love a GBA clone that dumps GBA roms from cartridges, but also supports save states and speed up functions, all with a nice 2019 quality mobile screen.

This will be unsupported within six months of its release. People have been burned by this exact sales pitch several times before.

Not to mention in the age of the Switch, no one should be excited about spending $80-$100 for an off-brand handheld whose primary selling point is an archive of 40-year-old titles, let alone established indie releases already available on hardware they likely already own.

@Heavyarms55 Yeah that is a handheld that I have been looking for as well. Essentially just a first generation GBA kind of design but with a nice adjustable backlit screen. Let me play roms as well as original cartridges and I would have nothing to complain about.

That is why I mentioned the Neo Geo X, this device basically just feels like the same kind of thing only less interesting.

I really dig what this machine is going for, but I would 1000% rather have those games on the Switch with a few modern conveniences. I pay good money for games like R-TYPE Dimensions and SF2 on the Switch because I like playing on the Switch. This thing looks neat, but half-baked.

What's interesting is that from a company with a .co.uk URL, although I can't find any information on the actual people making this. Loads of references of The Big Lebowski on their twitter feed makes me think they're European/US at least.
My question would be if there are 2P options with it (lots of appeal of some of the games in that list are the multiplayer options, would be great to have a chance to play through with a friend).

@Filbert_Wang If you think this thing will have widespread appeal you are only fooling yourself. At best this will probably sell like the Ouya, lots of initial interest and early sales from the early adopter type of enthusiasts, but they will probably only be able to appeal to just that one crowd.

I mean yeah, retro gaming is a big thing but the problem with that is how it is a very crowded marketplace these days and this is very far from being the only way to play these games. I mean I got the Atari collection on my Switch which has a lot to do with why I am not interested. I love classics but I won't be rushing out to buy this because it just doesn't do anything special.

@Timsworld2 All it really needs are the 3 tabs like on the PlayStation Store - "Indies", "Free To play", "Full Games".

I sometimes go to "New Releases" on the eShop and have to go down 3 screens of random stuff.

@JayJ - I meant retro gaming in general, regardless of what we personally think of the product, in-between Sega, Nintendo, snk retro products it's pretty well timed.
I've had fingers burned a couple of times with retro machines from 'Shang-ji corp' (just made that name up), which don't seem to last very long. Hoping that this coming from a company based in the west will have a bit more reliability (although I'm under no illusions where it is made) or at least a returns policy if it breaks after 2 months.

For anyone interested, I checked and no 2P (or accessory to enable it) for the time being, they didn't get any info about future releases.

They need to also bring obscure titles from 8-bit/16-bit eras that NEVER get republished, even though they were good games. Also, publish hard copies of indie titles that were digital only and no longer available. Good luck with that...

no, I already have lots of retro games on the switch like Namco collection, sega genesis collection, Atari collection, snk collection, castlevania collection, contra collection, street fighter collection, arcade archive games, arcade neo geo games. why would I need this system when I have all of these.

loved the first official trailer, though I was expecting there to be a confirmed release date and pre order details. no new information but I genuinely love the look of this.

It does look interesting but I have yet to see a Reviewer test the hardware and test the HDMI output to see it work in person.
This is a niche product and as long as it doesn't go past retro I think it will have a place. And the price will help with sales. I know another of naysayers but I think there are more that would welcome it then put it down. We got alot of couch quarterback whom have yet to test the hardware and should stop doing so.

Still arender and still looks like utter garbage. To of essentially copied the Famicom logo aesthetic is sooooooooooo lazy. oh it's a retro based consoel we'd better make it look like anothjer existing retro classic console. it shows absolutely zero thought into the design process abd that is enough for me to know it will be dreadful.

For me its fun if real. Already have retro machines: -Gb and Gba.

I am surprised by the hostility towards this, There seem to be a lot of people that love the physical product and this is physical only. Yes it hasnt been seen running yet but Im sure we will soon enough. Those cart boxes look great and such good value as well. This to me is what other people should be doing. The switch does now have a lot of retro compilations but theres always room for more!

Some cool games here but the HDMI out looks ridiculous. Is anyone actually going to play this device with the cord going across the living room like that? Also how will two player games work?

Nice trailer but everything are still just CGI render, it didn't actually show a real person holding the thing yet which proclaim that there's still not a working prototype yet. Hopefully this doesn't end up like the Coleco Chameleon.

@Savino Far as I'm concerned, it's simply that being negative or dismissive, is FAR easier than actually being positive and looking at things with either a neutral or constructive mindset.

And of course, the anonymity of the internet only enlarges that sentiment and simplifies voicing it, so that's why we now have labels like "keyboard warriors" and "armchair specialists"...

@rxchrisg Yeah I definitely agree, the whole retro gaming market is getting ridiculously over-saturated these days with unnecessary dedicated devices. It's like unless you are the type who feels some inexplicable need to collect all kinds of obscure consoles that have no real importance I don't see how anyone could get excited about this kind of stuff.

im really liking this thing for one its a official way to buy old games, a base console as well would be nice for the carts if this is a success. lets hope they dont ffffffffffff it up as im excited about this one.

@JayJ even “collecting” it is kind of stupid. If I was collecting,I’d be collecting a real Atari 2600,or a real NES,with their real games. If I just want a portable with those games,I already own switch,which also plays new games too. I can’t imagine spending 100 bucks on this little portable unless it AT LEAST has Netflix,YouTube,Hulu,etc. but even then I wouldn’t buy it.

Getting some Atari Lynx vibes from this. I remember how that thing was basically like a bunch of portable Atari arcade games. It was also overpriced too however, and at 100 dollars, this is definitely overpriced. I'm also concerned over what versions these games are based on.

Still I'm interested just for the Interplay Collection and if they get the resolution, scaling, etc right on this, it could make for a snazzy way to enjoy some EWJ on my 4K display. There's never too many ways to get my retro game on via an HD display so I'm optimistic but not entirely sold on it yet.

Okay, I said this before, but, does no one else find it weird that there is no actual pictures of this thing? Just 3D models. Smells like vaporware to me!
