It's not unusual to see references to existing Zelda games buried in new ones, but the guys over at GameXplain think they may have found yet another reference hiding in Breath of the Wild – and if this is legit, it's actually pretty crazy that it's taken this long to surface.
The location is Lurelin Village, which – when viewed from a certain angle – looks a lot like Outset Island from Zelda: The Wind Waker.
Not convinced? Well, there's a watchtower which you can climb and once you're up there, the layout of the buildings is pretty similar. You can see what we mean in the video above.

Yup, it’s a nice reference, I wouldn’t say it IS 1:1 like outset island, just reminiscent enough.
Weird. I think I missed this village entirely.
Off topic, I have to send my Switch off to be repaired. It’s not reading any micro sd cards. : (
But once it comes back I’ll check this Easter egg out
Doesn't quite follow that most of WW Hyrule is 50 metres underwater when the sea level in the village has only increased about 1m. Still, looks similar enough that I can believe it's a deliberate callback.
This is another one of those things that I noticed the first time I went to Lurelin but didn't even think to mention it because it just seemed like such an obvious reference.
I promise.
Even though I love BotW more, this video makes me really wanna play Wind Waker HD.
More than the call backs to WW is the fact that some people never came here on their initial playthroughs. It just goes to show how every player's adventure in BOTW is their own.
What, what?
Mind blown.
Took a few seconds on Google to find a reddit thread with the same discovery from over 2 years ago.
First I didn't watch the video as I don't click bait for YouTube videos. Second this is nothing really new as Breath of the Wild is built around all Zelda everything.
I LOVE this stuff... I still remember when I found what looked like the Deku tree area from Ocarina of Time.
Any time these BotW articles come up and I watch some secret like this or a random glitch it just makes me want to fire up my Wii U and jump back into that game.
Few games have that affect.
🤔😮😲🙀 I had no idea since I never got to play Wind Waker 😢 but I will play the HD version someday just don't know when
@Kienda
Yeah I just can't stop playing for long as I try to balance out playing all my games but BOTW is far above the rest as I now have like 415 hours. You're right that not many games have that affect, I have it on the Switch.
This was one of my favorite villages in BOTW. When i came Lurelin for the 1st time all i could thing of was "I'm in the Moana movie! So much Moana vibes in this village!" Now this Outset stuff? BOTW still reminds to be awesome!
This was the third village I found. The first was Kakariko and from Hateno I just went on a wander and ended up here, and didn't want to leave as it was so chilled. I was quite content just watching the sun go down by the sea.
@Aslanmagic Right there with you, buddy. Same exact issue with mine. I'm worried I won't have it back before Final Fest in a couple weeks
It's probably either a coincidence OR they were just looking for ideas for a nice town layout so they skimmed through some old Zelda games for ideas.
@Desrever oh no! I hope you get it soon. I’ve been digging playing my Switch lately so it’ll be missed.
And again I’m reminded how much I’d love to have Wind Waker HD on Switch.
searched "lurelin outset" on twitter and someone had noticed this just a week after release
Honestly? I'm 100% convinced
@DEADCELL This is actually VERY possible to do as even I didn’t discover it until pretty late in the game myself. But this could also be due to the fact that the game isn’t linear to the point where you MUST discover this village or any location in the game for that matter.
sometimes I play the game to look for Link's house from A Link To The Past. There's a couple I think could be. It's all about how you approach the map.
This village was literally the last place in the game that I discovered.
I really dislike that village. There's barely - if any - interesting NPCs. It just seems like they tacked it on towards the end of development to give the south eastern portion of the map some sort of generic tribal fisherman vibe. And literally the only main shop in town is a gambling house, which - in my opinion - doesn't really seem to fit the laid back, primitive nature of the settlement - well, not to me, anyway.
We need WW HD on the Switch.
That stupid half baked nothing to do in village? Big whoop
I love stuff like this - so singular to gaming.
Wolfenstein 2 having that arcade machine playing the first game was awesome
Ac with nes games etc
More of this please
THIS SUPPORTS MY THEORY
I FRRAKIN KNEW IT
l already knew about for 3 n half years, so why is it telling us about this now? The game has been out for a long time, so late timing.
@Vicki_S
yes and Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and 4 Swords.
@carmudgeon. I love it when that happens, I've fallen off cliffs and such to end up discovering new areas, weapons,etc. It's funny how that happens quite a bit🤣🤣
@Vicki_S. I agree and I like your picture 👍
@Mr_Persona We just need ALL of them on Switch and they can throw in Link’s Crossbow Training and the Twilight Princess Picross game as bonus content.
@Michaelrojelio84 Thanks. My two favorites combined 🙂
@Vicki_S Sadly I never played Wind Waker so if it comes to the Switch I'll definitely buy it. As for BOTW I've put in about 415 hours and still haven't completed everything, I need about 500 Korok seeds and 4 more Shrines. I also need to complete Trial Of The Sword
@Mr_Persona hold on there, this game came out 2 years and a few months ago. O_o
@WhiteTrashGuy I literally didn't find that place until after doing all the beasts (but still before Ganon)
I found this late in the game, but noticed it immediately. It's not exactly a secret?
I wish that they'd done more with the villages in the game. Here's hoping that BOTW2 has more little things to do in each village other than buying supplies. (Though I did adore building Tarry Town!)
I feel like if the team had been given more time they might have flushed out the towns a bit more. But I actually came across this village pretty quickly. I remember wandering around in Faron with like three or four hearts.I ended up looking for one of those hidden shrines for forever and got struck by lightning. It was pretty epic and kind of scary. I love how the game didn't hold your hand.
I was also super lucky because I ended up finding the grove of hearty whatchamcallits so I could make dishes with tons of yellow hearts pretty early on. (Which was good because it took me forever to find my first great fairy!
That's kind of cool actually. It makes me wonder what else could be hidden in there.
If we overlook the fact, that the landmass is completely different, the houses are located in different positions, the village itself is on the opposite site of the map, Outset Island was on top of a mountain, while Lurelin Village is at sea level, then yes, this is exactly Outset Island.👍
BTW guys, I recently played Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and there was ALSO Outset Island.🤯
Noticed this first time I visited the place, pretty cool.
@erv I haven't played it, but for me it's good. I love that they did add this. More reasons to get the Switch pro when it's released. I'm sure all games will be working from the previous switch as well
@DEADCELL I only found it really late in the game, after the final boss
Think I discovered Lurelin Village when I shield-surfed down a sloped pathway straight into the vicinity of a Bokoblin lookout post! Which i video captured. Just beyond was Lurelin.
@gangsterswedish Me too. That's the one Wii U port I really want.
@DEADCELL There's like a hundred places the story doesn't send you and you'll miss if you aren't exploring
Man, I loved the look of Lurelin Village. Too bad there was... almost nothing to do there. I wonder if there was more content planned for this area that was cut. It seems on par with the other villages that are near Divine Beasts.
@Vicki_S
hmm l'm not sure if nintendo wants to remaster Ocarina of Time again, l just thought about like the big zelda games mainly. But it would be nice to have the bonus mini games with Twilight Princess.
@San_D
I'm counting this year and yeah BOTW came out in 2017.
This video really highlights how much better looking Wind Waker is than Breath of the Wild. Those colors POP!
@Setery
I found all of the towers first. I wanted to see the whole map. I was chasing a bull, trying to ride it, and slide down the side of a large cliff. I was suddenly on a beach! Palm trees, crabs, clear water. I decided to follow this beach. I finally came to a small villiage. I spent a week there as I was going to the island in the distance I had discovered. The trial where you are stripped of everything. It is the story I tell people when trying to explain what it is like to play BOTW.
@wollywoo There is evidence in some of the released artwork that a fifth guardian was planned, possibly an aquatic one. Considering the town and how empty the Southeast corner is, it is a good bet you are correct.
@Mr_Persona I don't really care if OoT and MM are remasters or just ports (preferably of the 3DS versions since they're perfectly fine in 2D). I just want all the Zelda games on one console.
@Mr_Persona lol
I just cant do that guys voice. I have never made it through an antire video he narrates
@DEADCELL wait... WHAT?!
@Vicki_S
ah l see
WW looks better and is more fun than BotW.
Inspired by it, not a 1 on 1 copy apparently.
