If you're an indie game developer hoping to grab our attention by creating a crazy, completely over-the-top trailer full of absolute nonsense, you may as well give up now, because nothing's going to top this Team Sonic Racing video.
We'd urge you to just go ahead and watch the thing before reading on so that you can experience it first-hand, but it essentially has an excitable bunch of people running around with shopping trolleys in what can only be described as a psychedelic-fueled version of Dale Winton's Supermarket Sweep from the '90s. Oh Sonic, what on Earth are they doing to you these days?
Still, the use of the Golden O's and the Sonic toaster are a nice touch and there is actually a small amount of gameplay to be seen towards the end (it also features a cameo from Sonic Team board member Takashi Iizuka). If you did somehow manage to watch it until its close, you'll notice that even the little Sega sound effect seems to have given up on performing to its usual standards.
You must have some thoughts on this, surely! Share them with us in the comments below.

Reminds me of a lot of those weird video game commercials in the 90's.
I've no doubt Aaron Webber had a lot of fun doing that.
I mean it even has a sting from Aquatic Ruin Zone for good measure.

Better than the movie, that's for sure.
@Ralizah You still don't have a Sega CD? What are you waiting for?
Wrong answer. Show him.
Honestly I never would've thought to buy the game until now.
Didn't know Sega outsourced commercials to Youtubers.
On a side note, slow and steady never works in racing games.
funnier than the sonic movie
@Deadlyblack
SEGA have embraced YouTube influencers for some time now. Especially Game Grumps.
They already had Yogscast as DLC in Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing Transformed.

@Ralizah exactly this. It’s totally a throw back to those 90s tude adverts. Quite nice to see actually
Speaking of the Sonic movie, I'm sure for those that have seen Detective Pikachu already, the trailer is attached to the movie. After it was shown, I was quite surprised at the reaction to it in the theaters. It was good mix of young kids, their parents and teens. But I heard a lot of "Can't wait to see it". I'm sure some of that may have been sarcasm. But it was a far cry from the collective groaning the trailer brought about on the internet. It was just so odd to hear.
By the way, I agree. The commercial is definitely a throwback. Reminds me of some of Sega's old commercials from back in the day.
You got to love SEGA.
Switch version is At #5 on Amazon UK - So whatever works. In the UK Top 10 next week for sure.
Hahaha amazing!!
This is great! Bless you Iizuka-san.
As others have said it's like going back to the 90's. I like it, tongue in cheak humour, it's a decent advert. Oh and Supermarket Sweep, that brings back memories...
RADICAL!!!! This commercial is totally gnarly!
@UmbreonsPapa Same for my Detective Pikachu audience. The Sonic trailer got the most positive reactions out of all the trailers shown. I would estimate that the horrible-looking Angry Birds 2 trailer got the 2nd most positive reactions.
That's funny. It reminds me of those N64/GC-era game commercials (Super Smash Bros./Mario Party 4 anyone?).
Since when do they allow the admin of their Facebook page to do the commercials too
It would have been 90’s marketing except....the granny didn’t make a bizzaro face closeup at the end
As far as I'm concerned, 'tude never went out of style.
@DockEllisD ditto... I’d like some of the saner members here to post impressions.
I loved it. I had to watch twice.
Didn't expect to see Super Market Sweep mentioned in this site. lol
Hi, Jirard (the completionist)!
It actually makes me want to consider it.
I loved how crazy this trailer was. Gave me that old Sega commercials vibe.
@RupeeClock
It's not paid or planned promotions Sega has ever had a problem with.
It's people playing their games in youtube without their express permission, with rules on what could and couldn't be said or done beforehand.
For example, there was youtuber who uploaded his Yakuza let's play on youtube, and Sega Japan gave him 3 copyright strikes in a row and took down his channel. Luckily, this guy had a friend who knew some people from Sega of America, who got the copyright strikes removed and his channel restored, and than gave him written permission to upload his let's play, but the guy was so shaken from the experience he never uploaded let's play content from Sega games again.
Looking forward to see how this reviews!!
I sensed a lot of 90's vibes in this commercial, and I liked it. Hopefully more game commercials will take notes off of this zaniness.
"Forget the Sonic movie..."
...what Sonic movie?
I don't want to be a pessimist, but its latest trailer sealed its own fate.
Ha ha ha! That was ridiculous in almost all the right ways...
Reminds me of some of the crazier commercials from the 90’s
Content is fine, but it's too long to be fun to watch. They need to hire a better editor.
Somebody watched that married with children 2 part episode.
@Ralizah I was going to post that too!
@Wavey84 well at least they tried. Most game adverts these days just show pre rendered scenes that aren’t even indicative of the in game graphics and gameplay. They have at least tried something of a throw back.
The video starts by showing you a NE chain store called "Market Basket." It is by far the greatest supermarket you'll ever shop in. Price wise, service wise. Can't be beat. I thought that was pretty cool to see that...carry on....
@UmbreonsPapa I didn't hear a single person saying "can't wait to see it". In fact I heard no reaction whatsoever aside from my wife and my youngest (neither of whom is very attached to Sonic) saying it looked terrible.
thank u, next
(I'm not an Ariana Grande fan, despite that comment and my user pic)
@Wavey84
I agree but you see.. if scroll through the comments section.. seems like it works. People consuming the game nowadays have no way to compare to the "real" thing. It is the same if you try to criticize anything that you know had a "better" counterpart years ago, to people who were not even born that era. Well it is the same for all really. You too, me too, we cannot grasp what was indeed better in the past.
@forgottenarctic That means you totally are. Its ok. Like what you like.
That is awesome! Very nostalgic! As absurd as they were I reall miss commercials of the 80s and 90s and I had no clue I did till I watched this commercial...
I just wanna see the casting call for this.
Haha, this was lovely poop!
@PhilKenSebben Seriously, I'm not! Now I have to change my user pic!
