Idea Factory has announced that Super Neptunia RPG will be coming to Nintendo Switch this summer, both digitally and physically.
Developed by Artisan Studios in Canada, this game is said to bring the characters of the Neptunia series to life in "a whole new 2D way". Each character was hand-drawn by Tsunako, the artist behind the series, and then animated by what the publisher calls "computer magic" to create a world that’s mysteriously switched from three dimensions to two.
You can probably guess that the game features RPG elements, thanks to that highly self-aware title, and this is made up of side-scrolling dungeons and turn-based battles. We have a list of key features for you to explore below.
Key Features:
- New Me in 2D – Your favorite Goddesses jump from three dimensions to two! Artisan Studios and Compile Heart proudly present new, vibrant backgrounds and newly developed 2D animations hand drawn in this action-inspired side-scrolling RPG! With Artisan Studios and Tsunako collaborating to create new background and character art, fans and newcomers alike can see Gamindustri in a new 2D perspective.
- Where You Lead, I Will Follow – With four Goddesses to rotate on-the-fly during battle, players can change their formation type and unleash devastating attack combos. Depending on which Goddess is leading the pack, players can strategize attacks from four different formations: Strike, Magic, Support and Heal!
- Goddess ‘bout to Break! – Strut your stuff and dish out your special Break Attack to ensure victory! Armed with their classic ability to transform, the Goddesses gain additional stat bonuses that enhance their attacks and lay waste to any enemy!
- Put a +2 Str Ring On It – Strengthen your Goddesses by utilizing Skills and Abilities that can be unlocked with weapons, armors, or accessories! Strategically assign Skills and rearrange your abilities for each battle.
We don't have any release information beyond the slightly vague "summer 2019" window, but we're sure a fixed date will be shared in the near future.
Until then, why not let us know your thoughts on this one in the comments below? Will you be picking it up?

Nepu Nepu Nepu!
....Eh, Mario Maker 2 is more important. I'll be playing that instead, lol
Failed hard on PS4 (did not even chart on Switch) in Japan at ¥7,749. But yeah, lets try again at $50 🙄
[PS4] Super Neptunia RPG (12/20/18) – 11,521
[Switch] No Show.
19.99 physical, $15 Digital - and we at "maybe". They have better luck pushing this as a F2P mobile game.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Actually the characters are based on 7th gen consoles, the Wii, 360, and PS3. The main character is also based on the planned successor to the Dreamcast, the SEGA Neptune.
The purple haired girl represents the Neptune, the brown haired girl on the left represents the Wii IIRC, and the black haired girl on the right represents the PS3. Not sure where the 360 girl is in that image. Also note they have transformations that better match their respective consoles if you don’t see the resemblance.
Been seeing preorder listings for this around for quite some time but been waiting to see if Amazon Australia gets it before I look elsewhere. Think it might be EB Games exclusive though so I'll probably just import.
“From 3D to 2D”
So you’re telling me that I can finally join my 2D waifu in the 2D world?
@Bolt_Strike
To left of nep's head
I'll wait for one of the mainstream releases, thanks...if that will happen.
Not to say I'll pass this one up, though.
I'm not a fan of the animation style. It's incredibly lazy and completly devoid of character and personality. Compare this type of limb animation with something like Cuphead. The difference in talent is off the scale.
So what do you call those Adobe Flash-type animations? I hate them with a passion. Reminds me of cheap browser content from the early 2000s.
Can't speak about the game itself, though, so I hope it's decent.
It's on the list. But I got a TON of games in front of that.
Time to pay collection for the cult of Nep-Nep
@Agramonte Wow, you’re just a ray of sunshine on this site
@NintendoFan4Lyf I don’t recognize them, so they probably are new characters. They’ll represent something.
I’m interested! Not played a Neptunia game before but looks cute and lighthearted.
Can't wait to play this. Nep in 2D sounds interesting.
@TechaNinja Oh derp XD. How could I miss that?
@Anri02 Not pay $50 for a mobile game and suggesting to get HOB, HellBlade and/or CupHead instead of cardboard.
I actually think I been the voice of reason on this site today 🤔
I've been curious about the Neptunia series for a while now, so I think it will be fun to check this game out.
@Agramonte You keep telling yourself that
@NintendoFan4Lyf Probably not. In Megadimension the main 4 got forms that represented the next gen (at the time) consoles. These new characters could be anything from an unused platform to some developer studio.
@Agramonte Compile Heart (devs of this franchise) games have never been huge sellers on any system, though they were a bit better on Ps Vita, because they're super niche and this one is a spin off very different than the main franchise. Also the game might simply not be good or it's a case of the fanbase being burnt out after endless spin offs
Love the characters in this series. Eager to give this game a chance.
@Anri02 Isn't he just? He's got as high a dislike rate on his comments as some of the worst trolls that come here. It's like there's a parallel universe where he thinks he's on PushSquare and there's some dude over there who goes on nonstop about Switch games thinking he's on Nintendolife.
This series is one of my guilty pleasures. Painfully mediocre gameplay, but funny and lovable characters (<3 Compa). I don't think I'd pay $50+ for one of the games, but this will likely get in my collection eventually when it goes on sale.
@ramu-chan That's not a fair comparison. Cuphead's animation was completely hand-drawn and made to be like early animation from the Steamboat Willie / "In Technicolor" era of the 40-50s.
You're comparing Spinach to Apples here.
The older Atelier games would be a better choice though. Like the 1st 3 atelier iris titles or mana khemia. I would love to see those with a little remaster
I'd probably throw this a bone for $20-25, but $50 is just a bit steep.
As a Neptunia fan who would love to see the mainline games hit the switch, I am kinda turned off by this game, I'm scared for the fact that it will leave a lot of people unhappy or make a lot of people dislike the series, The switch is perfect for the series to grow but using this as the first game to convince players that its a series worth trying is more likely to hurt it.
I've been a big fan of the neptunia series for atleast a year or 2 now, and tbh i think one of my favorite things about the series are the spinoffs, sure we do need more main games since the last one was vii and all they really did was remake it with vr support, something that when I first played vii I knew they'd do, mostly due to the fact when you hover over an area, they have a little preview screen that has it in a first person view going around the area, but that's besides the point. to me I've been waiting for this game to come out for months ever since it was first announced and tbh I really could care less how it faired in its home country. sure that could happen in the states or anywhere else for that matter, but it wouldn't happen till the game gets released there. at first the artistic design choice threw me off cuz im so used to the whole 3d look of the games that a 2d cartoony look was weird to me, but tbh I think it wont take too long to get used to, don't get me wrong the game could still end up being bad. but to me I want to play it first hand before accepting the opinions of people who either just want to trash the game before the release, or who only played the game for a little bit and didn't like it. then again I do hope that anyone wanting to get into the series will give it a shot, even though I do recommend starting out at either rebirth 2/3 since the games are pretty fair compared to the 1st game, or pick up a copy of vii since tbh I believe its the better game out of all of them, it has better battle mechanics and new characters, as well as less grinding needed imo.
also sorry if my words are all jumpled around, its just how I write stuff
