Angry Video Game Nerd I & II Deluxe Now Officially Confirmed For Switch

I haven't watched Angry Video Game Nerd in a long while, so I am curious to ask if he is still as relevant as he once was, especially the way YouTube has changed and evolved with so many gaming channels springing up?

Man, this game is gonna take me back to the past...

@FragRed I would say he is still relevant. James and Mike still makes good content but the videos always remind me of YouTubes earlier years. Not a bad thing 😃

Easily the most professionally balanced (read: fair) rage game out there. Everything in it is pretty much possible. Highly recommended.

Plus, the second one has the Nostalgia Critic as a boss. I can't pass up such a delicious double-dipping.

With two video games based on "AVGN," I can't wait until there's finally a movie based on "Rental Reviews" (my favorite Cinemassacre show, at the moment).

He still digs up some pretty obscure kusoge, which is impressive in this era. The sketch-y stuff has aged but his reviews are still brilliant.

@FragRed Yeah he is definitely not as relevant as he once was. He has really slowed down ever since he got married and now that he has a baby it seems like he only makes an AVGN video every once in a blue moon. The whole thing sorta seems like a has-been youtube sensation that reflects upon a bygone era.

@RyanSilberman I just finished watching the Earthbound one after I read your comment. It's like making up complaints at this point. It's okay, but it gives the idea the game is much harder or poorly done than it is. I mean, moreso than old videos, lol

Love the show and still watch it to this day, and it's still better than most of the other shows I've seen on YouTube so I can't wait for these games, I've played most of the first and it's great and I'm excited for the sequel

@FragRed Dude it's crazy. Cinemassacre is bigger than ever. AVGN had Macauly Culkin in an episode about the Home Alone games this past Christmas. James was also just on Macauly's podcast. Pizza and Bunny Ears.

@FragRed His newer episodes tend to range from great to okay, I don't really recall a really bad one, but then with his show nearing 200 episodes, of course its never going to reach the highs of his best episodes often, what show does when all the best ideas have been done already?

But still, I think the ever once in a while format has helped it not get stale or sick of the show, and we have Mike and James Mondays and Rental Reviews that provide weekly content, so I think the set up they have now is pretty good.

@FragRed I always liked James Rolfe’s content and continue to watch it regularly. Don’t watch him though if you expect legitimate game criticism especially as his Nerd persona. He focuses mostly on humorous nitpicks and rarely gets too descriptive about the games he plays. Especially lately they’ve been more skit based than informative, yet still very enjoyable.

@AlohaPizzaJack But...That's always been part of the series tradition? Genuinely critical as some parts of every video could be, he also frequently exaggerates on what can amount to nitpicks for the sake of comedy. That's what makes the Angry Video Game Nerd's humor. I mean, this is the same show that connected Mario 3 to the depths of Hell.

But I point out the Earthbound episode in particular because of how he embraces the more impactful elements of the game; not to mention the sheer dedication to his craft in a beyond-full-length episode to boot.

Surprised no one has sued for all the different noticble IPs it's using. Because 2019. No one can have fun

@FragRed Don't know if "relevant" is the right word to use about someone who focuses mainly on retro stuff. I have to say as much as I still enjoy AVGN, James is best when talking about old movies, especially horror. You can see he's sharing his passion, like in a recent vid in which he compared twelve Dracula movies to the book to find the most accurate adaptation. No jokes, no skits, no swearing, just pure love for horror movies.

Yeah, it got a pretty good trailer in the latest Ecco the Dolphin video... which he didn’t even get to the truly rock solid parts of!

As much as I love James as a content creator and as nostalgic as AVGN is for me (and impressive that it's still going), I only remember playing the first game when it was new and thinking it had some great music but really unfair level design. Might pick this up if they touched up the level design to be less of, as the Nerd would put it, a sh*tload of f*ck.

AVGN probably posssesses the greatest legendary status as a YouTuber one could possibly obtain.

@doctorhino Pax was running March 28th - March 30th in 2019. They were pretty busy with a panel and stuff if I recall, though was a long time ago.

@Kreko They may be selling a physical edition on their Cinemassacre website. Though don't quote me on that, they stuff a lot of merch and blu rays etc on there.

@FragRed still a potent hyperbolic parody of petty fanbrained complaints, still some actually fair and informative points inbetween, still some humour I fail to appreciate and some that genuinely makes me at least chuckle.

As a result, still the only "YouTube critic" series I can stomach.

Great that we finally be able to play the second installment on a Nintendo console. Loved the first one. Wasn't that hard. Bloodstained Curse of the moon 2 on veteran after stage 4 is hard but still fun to play

@Savino Yeah, the sketches really haven’t aged well but some of those older reviews are classics and I really appreciate the care he puts into his reviews.

One im really looking forward to, I still watch him regularly and enjoyed the first game and now it has much better balancing plus a new third chapter

@doctorhino That was a great one, I can take a bit of his nonsense sketch stuff but that was a really solid review of a game that looked both terrible and strangely appealing.

@FragRed I don't know how long it's been since you've seen one, but I would highly, HIGHLY recommend his Earthbound review. It's a long one, about 40 minutes, but you can tell the game left an impact on him, and it has some great callbacks to his previous episodes. He does knock it down a couple notches with fair criticism of some of the mechanics, but when he ends a review gushing over the game he's reviewing and not drowning himself in Rolling Rock, you know it's something special.

The first one lacks some good design when it comes to enemies and stages, although the controls are flawless.
The second one improved on everything and fans of AVGN and his other properties will get the most out of it.
I would recommend getting this one.

@FragRed Came here to write the same thing. I loved him like 10 years ago. But I have not watched any of his videos in years.
But maybe that's just me because I kinda stopped watching any of the "internet people". Except for Redlettermedia now and then.

@nessisonett I remember that game coming out and it looked like a third person GoldenEye in the screenshots leading up to it but just played like garbage. I played it at a game store and was amazed they were even letting people try it because everyone was just making fun of it.

It's funny, I haven't considered AVGN a mature show for a very long time. Back in like 2009 when I was in school still, I did. AVGN was edgy for being willing to swear relentlessly and make all kinds of vulgar jokes.

But now, while I still watch his content, it strikes me a VERY juvenile. It's vulgarity for the sake of vulgarity.

I honestly think that James Rolfe has largely moved on from the character and continues the series because he knows his fans want it, not because his heart is in it any more.

This is awesome. I love watching his indepth, humorous analyses of games with glaring issues, inconsistencies, and glitches. There's something very comforting and kind of nostalgic watching his show as his "basement" (set) look cozy like playing vids with some buds in a basement. I grew up with the classics, so it's really fun to play a game(s) in his honour and image.

Pass me a Rolling Rock and a controller!

@Heavyarms55 You're more right than you realize. James has stopped writing for AVGN regularly and he has Screenwave do most of the work for him. He basically just an actor at this point.

Never understood the love for the Nerd. He seems to have a huge fanbase, as seen here in the comments, so he obviously has appeal. Weird sketches about old video games with a bunch of cussing didn't do anything for me at all. But I'm glad there are people who find him funny and enjoyable.

Most of video game youtubing can probably be traced back to AVGN, but it has long ago moved on from scripted videos of random older games to streaming new ones.

I was just playing the first one on my 3DS the other day. I forgot how hard it was. I didn't know there was a second one released? Depending on the price, I'll check it out.
