Despite only being on the market for three weeks, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has now sold more copies than Splatoon 2 in the UK.
The game has seen a 24% drop in physical sales this week, slipping down to fifth place in the UK charts, but its tremendous overall start means that it is already the fifth best-selling Switch game in the region. Other games in that Switch-specific top-five list are Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (which is the best-selling Switch game in the UK by a large margin), Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.
The Christmas number one, however, goes to Red Dead Redemption 2. The game managed to secure top spot for the second consecutive week, with sales rising by 26% to fight off the nearest competition.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart (physical sales only):
1. (1) Red Dead Redemption 2
2. (2) FIFA 19
3. (3) Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
4. (7) Battlefield V
5. (4) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
6. (6) Spyro Reignited Trilogy
7. (5) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
8. (9) Spider-Man
9. (10) Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy
10. (8) Forza Horizon 4
Did you buy any of these chart-topping games this week? Any Christmas surprises? Let us know down below.

Great effort from Smash, can't wait to get a hold of it tomorrow!
Also well deserved for Red Dead, it's just an undeniably fantastic game and there was never any doubt it would be number 1 for Christmas really!
Squid girl has weak legs.
Awesome to see Smash performing so well in the UK. Nintendo's UK fanbase are some of the best and I hope the Switch continues to do well in the UK.
Great news for both SSBU and RDRD2, two truly great games! Merry Christmas/ God jul everybody!
For Smash to be in top 5 in Xmas week is a real achievement as this is usually when multiplats totally take over. Also to be fair I didn't realise Splatoon 2 had sold that well so that is still good for Splatoon 2.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is an absolute beast though!
Edit: Actually well done to all 3 consoles as they all have at least one exclusive in the top 10 and all of them are amazing games!
Great games. Great year for gamers. Happy holidays everyone
I do like Smash, I spent 2 hours playing it today alone. But I gotta say, if I had to pick one, Splatoon 2 or Smash Ultimate? Easily Splatoon 2.
Splatoon 2 is just a lot more enjoyable to me.
Both of those games are under the tree in my house. Can’t wait for either of them.
Smash Bros Ultimate sales:
> Week 1: ~132,000
> Week 2: ~63,000
> Week 3: ~48,000
> Total: ~243,000
Smash Bros Ultimate should end the year with at least 260,000 physical copies sold in under 4 weeks. It has already outsold Smash Bros Wii U' s lifetime sales, and should approach Smash Bros 3DS' lifetime sales by mid-January.
Given that the game is also the fastest-selling eShop game of all time, it should end the year with at least 300,000 physical + digital copies sold.
one thing that uk charts forgets doesnt include how many new gamers will be getting smash on christmas as well.
I’m a die hard Smash fan, but
Splatoon 2 > Smash Ultimate
Happy Cribo every one, here's to a great gaming year ahead.
I hate fighting games but dying to get this
@Equinox UK is NOT a pretty much lost cause for Nintendo as we lately see and witness and they're focusing on the rest of Europe as well. Absolutely clueless about your thoughts!
One of the most striking things about Nintendo’s 2018 has been the resurgence in the U.K.
I personally enjoy Splatoon 2 more than Smash, and will continue to root for it until the day the servers go offline.
That being said, Smash was always going to out perform everything else from the start. Even if the hardcore community talked smack on it and gave it low scores, it would have still outsold Splatoon.
Speaking of... I can't wait until I finally finish of World of Light so I can put this game down, and hop back into Splatoon.
@Equinox I don’t know anyone with an Xbox, I think my cousin may have his older brothers. I have a Switch, my son does, three nephews each have one, a niece will have one on Christmas morning, my cousin does, his nephew does and I know of at least half a dozen other owners beyond that. I live in Northern Ireland.
@Equinox LOL a lost cause...really. Whilst certainly not as strong as germany or france, Nintendo is doing well in the UK mate, let's not get it twisted.
Don't let facts and figures get in your way or the definition of a lost cause. Over 1.4 million consoles sold in less than two years, Smash Bros Ultimate fastest-selling Switch game in the UK and been at the top of Amazon videogames charts for weeks, Mario Odyssey & Mario kart 8 DX with over half a million sales and still holding strong in the charts, yet a lost cause. Get real.
Anyone else that really doesn't see the fuss with Smash? I feel the same with Pokemon. I really don't get why both are so popular but whatever, at least i learned that just because something is popular doesn't mean everyone will think it's good.
@Equinox
Just because Smash Bros isn't topping the charts in the UK like it is in Japan and the US doesn't mean the UK is a "lost cause."
Smash Bros was never going to outperform mutiplatform institutions like FIFA/COD or Rockstar's big new game of the last half-decade.
@Hyrule
As of the beginning of 2018, the Switch has sold more hardware in the UK than in Germany (~680,000 vs ~600,000 units), though Switch software sales in Germany are higher than Switch software sales in the UK despite the lower install base.
@westman98 Even better news, I didn't know they had outsold in Germany
Most impressive!
Red2 is an amazing piece of Digital entertainment. So Not surprised at all it is #1 again.
Do not really care for fighting games so Ill go with Splatoon over Smash any day.
