Nintendo has revealed that the ever-popular battle royale phenomenon Fortnite has been downloaded to almost half of all Switch consoles worldwide.
Ever since its launch on Switch back in June, Fortnite has seen the usual, regular updates to the game present on all versions - including new Seasons, weapons, gameplay mechanics, cosmetic items, and more - helping it to remain relevant and enjoyed by players around the world. The game's performance on Switch has left a lot to be desired at times, and a couple of missing features have left some fans feeling frustrated but, on the whole, the port provides players with a decent way to play their favourite battle royale game in more ways than ever before.
Just yesterday, we shared the news that the Switch has now managed to sell 22.86 million units worldwide; while exact figures have not been provided, it's easy to assume that this news means Fortnite may have amassed somewhere around 10 million downloads on Nintendo's console. Of course, that's just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the game's complete player base, but still an impressive number nonetheless.
Nintendo has said that, since the game's release at E3 this year, Fortnite "has shown up everywhere", going on to say that "many people continue to play the game, boosting the overall utilisation ratio of Nintendo Switch".
Are you one of the many players who has downloaded Fortnite? Do you still play it to this day? Let us know with a comment below.

Not mine, and NEVER will
I'm not surprised, considering it costs £0 to buy. (Besides the huge investment of effort in advertising this game.)
Super popular free game is super popular.
...
...
News at 11.
Downloaded and deleted.
Not on mine.
Some of us aren't freeloaders.
How many are still playing it a week or a month later though? I don't see anyone on my friendslist playing it.
Downloaded to see what the fuss was. Deleted it after 30 seconds of gameplay. Spent more time registering!
Like many others have said, it's FREE to start and play. So most people are going to be willing to try it.
Further the media wont shut up about it either. Not just gaming sites, but I've even seen (laughably bad) articles about it on BBC and Yahoo "news". So basically everyone with an internet connection has at least heard of it.
It's not a bad game. But if it were a paid title it wouldn't remotely as popular. I would go so far to say it wouldn't be 25% the monster it is, if it weren't a F2P game.
I downloaded but couldn’t be bothered registering so it got deleted pretty quickly.
Downloaded it, I never play it. My GF likes it, so worth the download.
Same here. I downloaded it and after almost 30' I had deleted it. I would prefer a non-free good fps game exclusive to Switch! Call of Duty will never be out but a Time Splitters 3 or a new Turok or a new Crysis would be awesome.
I have got 10+ hours from it and spent no money so for me its been great. I havent played it in a while though.....
But how many players are active out of that number? Because it doesn't matter how many free downloads they get if people aren't invested in it.
Fortnite play for free, but V-bucks need purchase separately.
Can’t complain. Free game and it plays well. Would love to play it more but backlog and splatoon takes my time
LOL
No
I don't play shooting games.
@AcridSkull I play it kinda regulary. Mainly because its the only game I can play with my friends that own Xbone and PS4 , thats the main reason. While I can play other games with my xbone friend, PS4 allowed crossplay only for Fortnite as of right now
@Anti-Matter lol you don’t play shooting games. I would never have guessed.
My nephew got a Switch couple weeks ago... It's currently a Fortnite machine only. But he is spending money on it, I've got my son the last two Battle Pass things, I play it and there are a lot of people on my Friend list regularly playing. Allowing Cross platform play with PS4 definitely has given it a boost.
Tried it out; I don’t consider Fortnite a bad game, but it’s just not for me.
I downloaded and never played. I’d imagine releasing the figure the way they have many people downloaded it and never actually booted it up.
@1UP_MARIO proof if ever you needed it that you can be slightly unhinged without playing shooting games
Emmm it's for free... So pure download numbers are in no way an indicator if a game is popular or not. If, by any means, it's an indicator if people are interested in it or not, but that's it... Number of regular players is the indicator that would be interesting.
Free newspapers or daily flyers are also delivered to 100% of households. Doesn't mean it's popular
On my cousins switch, he only has three games
Fortnite, RBI, and some mobile game
RBI has an hour
Mobile game, a little while
And he has 400 hours on Fortnite!
(I really need to convince him to get botw)
@chardir Yep same thing here I couldn't even being myself to play it after 2 games a lot of people I know badger me to play it cuz I'm good at at shooters but dang it was boring. I still don't get how people like it so much. All I know is that I've lost several friends online because they stopped playing good games and started playing fortnite.
Off topic but I love the thumbs down button lol
I have about 130 hours into it, I enjoy it and it is a simple alternative to the rest of the games I am playing.
@Stocksy @1UP_MARIO
If you guys are just going to bully Anti Matter all the time, you're better off putting him on your ignore list and moving on. You guys aren't funny and just look sad at this point.
I only download it because my nephew wanted to play it.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Give it a go, I enjoy the squad battles the most. Its good to play just a few matches every now and then.
I haven't downloaded it but that's mostly because I'm not big into online gaming and I have too many other games that I've purchased to play.
@Frenean Give me a break. If you think poking fun at him posting the exact same thing every time an article is posted is "bullying" you're going to have a rough life in front of you. And let's be real, which one of these sounds like bullying...
A lighthearted joke: "lol you don’t play shooting games. I would never have guessed."
Or the constant berating of: "I will NEVER play M rated games. Violent games are disgusting and PURE evil. I hate them and will destroy all of them"
I know which of those seems more extreme to me. If you're going to post nonsense like a broken record on repeat, you need to be ready to deal with a little push back. It doesn't mean he's being bullied or that anyone has anything against him as a person.
It's quite literally all my kids play on the Switches anymore.
@roadrunner343
He isn't targeting anyone though, you just disagree with him. I just ignore him, why can't you? I see people calling him unhinged and other names all the time, and that's even more sad than his over the top opinions. It's funny that you think I'm defending him as if I agree with him or like him or anything. He's on my ignore list so I don't even see what he posts anymore, but I see plenty of people tagging him and mocking him.
I archived it after a week or so later, like majority of people probably. Active user-base numbers would be more interesting to see.
I find it funny how a lot of people are even proud of not having downloaded it.
It's a good game, playing 2-3 matches isn't giving it a fair shot, it's like playing 3 matches of smash and loosing then saying "oh this game sucks"
I've spent 200+ hours on it, spent some money on it cause honestly, it's money the dev deserves to have after giving me so much joy.
@Frenean Then go call out those people that are insulting him, not posts that are clearly lighthearted in nature. Targeting a large group of people (Anyone who consumes any sort of violent media) does not somehow make the behavior less offensive than responding to an individual. This is a public comments section/forum. You need to be ready to discuss and have your opinions challenged. If you don't want that, then you shouldn't be posting them in public for all to view in the first place.
Much like I posted in disagreement to your accusation of "Bullying" and you in turn posted in disagreement to me, and the cycle continues... of course, we're both free to ignore each other. But again, it's a public discussion, so you should expect to be challenged publicly - especially if you constantly post the same garbage with extremist language stating how much you hate it, want to destroy it all, it's pure evil, etc...
Not playing mainstream games doesn't make you cooler or mean you have better taste in games, guys.
@roadrunner343
Calling him unhinged isn't exactly challenging his opinion, but go ahead and keep ignoring that little comment to fit your narrative. There is nothing intelligent or constructive in insulting and mocking the person you disagree with.
@WinterIceFox
And not playing mainstream games doesn't mean we're trying to be cool or elitist. I don't hate Fortnite or anything, I just grew bored of it pretty quickly.
@Frenean Considering you're the one that quoted someone that 100% absolutely was not bullying in anyway, of course I used that as the main example -_- You're the one that quoted them, not me.
Nevermind the fact that I didn't ignore the "Unhinged" comment at all. I specifically said it reads to me like a lighthearted poke, given the joking nature of the comment and the winking smiley face and all. So again, if that's you're definition of bullying, you're going to struggle dealing with anyone if life.
Once again, you think the occasional jab clearly in jest, with a winky smiley face and all, is somehow more offensive than constantly berating an entire group that their behavior is PURE EVIL, letting them know how much you hate it, that it's disgusting, etc...? If you want to repeatedly post nonsense, go right ahead - but you have to expect to be challenged or the target of some lighthearted jokes. If you want to play the white knight, at least go find someone that is actually attacking/insulting him.
@roadrunner343
If I struggled to deal with other people's opinions, I'd resort to calling them unhinged instead of actually coming up with a decent counter argument to said opinion. Why you can't see where these guys went wrong isn't really my problem. If you aren't going to bother engaging someone in a polite debate, especially if their frequent comments on the same subject are disagreeable, you might as well put them on your ignore list because you aren't adding anything to the discussion.
Also, again I put the guy on my ignore list a while ago because he posts the same stuff over and over again. It was that easy. I didn't feel like arguing with him about his opinion, so I simply ignored him. That's a much better alternative than looking just as bad and petty by making fun of him.
@Frenean Once again, the problem is "where these guys went wrong" when it's abundantly clear that one of them in no way "bullied" anyone. You're completely ignoring half of my comment and one of the people you quoted. If you want to argue over whether or not sarcastically calling someone unhinged, complete with a winking/smiley face, is somehow bullying, fine - I get that. I disagree strongly, but I'll accept that. Even so, I find that far less offensive and hate filled than the vast majority of the posts filled with hatred/evil/disgusting comments. Which I also don't find offensive at all - once again, I don't care if people post nonsense. Just be ready to defend it or be the target of a joke or two. It's really not that serious, in this case at least. If you've seen more sever bulling, insulting, or whatever... by all means, go call them out.
Wow I’m so shocked the number one game in the world for a year has been downloaded a lot
@roadrunner343
Ignore him. That's all that needs to be done. Either that, or have some kind of discussion to try and turn his opinion around. I don't care what the guy says, if you are just going to poke fun at him, you're just as bad in my opinion. I'll take him off my ignore list and try and talk to him.
@Frenean Great - so you feel free to do that. And also feel free to think I am just as bad as him, I suppose. You're free to do that.
I can't imagine a world in which people are unable to have a lighthearted joke targeted at someone they disagree with. I can't count the times I've poked fun at myself, my social/religious upbringing, political views, etc... Thankfully, there are plenty of people that disagree with your stance, and have no issues with a bit of lighthearted (And sometimes, not so lighthearted) fun to make a point. If everyone simply ignored everyone they disagreed with, we'd be in a lot of trouble.
@AcridSkull Different people, different friends lists. I see many Switch friends on my list playing Fortnite.
That's a lot of people that are not building in Fortnite. lol
Oh look at some of these comments from the hipsters that say they never even downloaded Fortnite lol. It's things like this why most developers skip a Nintendo system. The goody two-shoes too high and mighty to even install a free game that people took the time to make. Getting mad at the success of a game because it's not Nintendo made, or that don't have any of their characters in it. Listen, Fortnite is not my cup of tea either, but that didnt stop me from downloading it for my son and throwing $40 to Epic for the support. Did the same thing for Paladins and AOV. Same goes for Warframe when it comes out. That way, if they put more games on the Switch, maybe, just maybe, they may have something else I might like. If not, someone else in my household will. Come out of your shells and try something different for once.
Okay, a few things.
I don't understand why people are acting surprised or confused about people liking the game. Everyone has different tastes.
Not installing + hating on the game isn't something to be proud of, makes you sound closed minded.
If it's not your cup of tea fine, doesn't mean you have to look down on the game or people who play it.
On another note, looks like people have been putting the dislike button to use in here 😆
Still fun, play it every now and then, but busy with my backlog of games such as Bayo2, DB Fighterz & Blazblue.
the cancer keeps on festering and growing i see, go ahead a downvote me for it idc, i will still speak my mind regardless.
@Paddle1 @MongolRaider
Here's the thing, I agree with you guys that it's kind of pointless to just hate on the game and say it sucks. It's a really well made game for the genre, and it's free. That's great and I respect Epic for making a monetization system that's as good as it is for a free to play game.
However, some people here haven't downloaded the game because they're not into the kind of game that it is. People don't have to be. For instance I grew out of multiplayer shooters a long time ago. I still downloaded the game even though I knew I wasn't going to play it much, and I didn't. It isn't because the game is bad, I'm just not into that type of game.
Also, Switch owners aren't the only people who needlessly badmouth the game because they don't like the genre. I've seen PLENTY of PlayStation owners do the same thing. I agree that people shouldn't dislike it because it's popular, but you shouldn't assume that people who don't like it don't like it to try and be cool or hip or something.
@BensonUii
Right, and the thing is that I haven't seen him actually attack or insult anyone specifically, but plenty of people go after him. They won't ignore him because they WANT to make fun of him, and they're childish for it.
It’s FREE. I’m sure I’m not the only one that downloaded it, tried it, and promptly deleted it. Those download numbers are irrelevant. Heck, considering it’s free only half of Switch owners even trying it is not that good.
What a sensitive bunch
Not really interested.
@Frenean I agree, I don't think there's anything wrong with not liking the game. It's just the belittling others for enjoying it that I find unnecessary.
And all the hatin on the Switch because it can play Fornite on the go must bind your britches right.
I have it on Switch, Xbox, PS, and PC. Because it's free and cross play. Don't play it all that much though.
It's understandable why, the game is free and highly popular. I downloaded it back then they released it, but I have only played it a few times. It's not really my thing, but the free nature means it will be on my console until I need to free up space.
How brave of all these commenters to say they’re proud they don’t have it installed and never will. The whole ‘I played 2 games so I know what I’m talking about’ is ridiculous. You don’t play 1 match of Counter Strike and expect to be amazing and you can’t spout about how you don’t understand the phenomenon because you aren’t good at it.
It’s just ridiculous to feel proud you don’t enjoy something that many others do.
You have to admit, Fart Night is a real gas to play!
@chardir
Yep, was just going to say the same. Played 10 minutes and deleted it. Also it's free so I wouldn't be too proud of that number...
@mazzel You will be surprised because Fortnite is REALLY popular. You will see millions of views on Fortnite youtubers. Also this game was on PC first then went on other systems.
@roadrunner343 None of the two comments are a form of bullying....
@IceEarthGuard I know I know
I'm just saying that number of downloads is no number to measure popularity. I'm also playing it from time to time.
Very fun game. Love it.
