Upcoming title Battle Princess Madelyn will be arriving on both Nintendo Switch and Wii U this fall, with the exact release date to be announced "very shortly". To celebrate, a new trailer has been released to show off some of the game's action.
We've been following the development of Battle Princess Madelyn for some time now on Nintendo Life, starting way back in February of last year before the Switch was even released. Since then, we've been treated to snippets of video footage - including the game's first level, teaser trailers, and the frantic Arcade Mode - and we're slowly but surely edging closer to the game's release.
If you've missed the journey so far, the game follows the story of a young knight in training, Madelyn, and her ghostly pet dog Fritzy. They set out on an adventure to save her kingdom and her family from the clutches of an evil wizard, and the whole thing is heavily influenced by the likes of Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap. Christopher Obritsch of developer Causal Bit Games has said the following:
"From its initial concept days, right through the successful Kickstarter campaign which reached over $212,665 CAD, until its imminent release, Battle Princess Madelyn has developed and grown from inspiration from feedback from my daughter, who inspired the original idea, gamers and ideals from the very best of classic retro games fused with modern presentation complete with gameplay and fun. I believe all our goals have been achieved with much much more added ingredients, features and elements that will have gamers engaged in a game that has been crafted with real planning, dedication and, a lot of love."
It shouldn't be long now until the game arrives on your home Nintendo console of choice. Will you be grabbing this on Switch, or will you treat the Wii U to a brand new experience for a change? Let us know with a comment.

WANT!
Physical release, please???
Nice and also a good swansong treat for Wii U owners too.
Superb. It's been a long time coming yet I'm looking forward to it even more now than I was back when I first heard of it. Day one!
@retro_player_22 I totally missed it's arriving on WiiU. Surprising but delightful.
So is this the Limited Run WiiU game? They have a PS4 edition listed in their “upcoming games” section
Really hoping this is good as I’m a huge ghosts n goblins fan. Looks great
It's really nice that they release it on Wii U too. Many other indie developers whose games weren't finished switched to the Switch (no pun intended) when Wii U was abandoned by Nintendo and just called it a day. Huh, Playtonic?
@Moroboshi876
Credit where it's due, they've stuck to their promise
Looks ace! I'll be getting this on Wii U or PS4!
@Moroboshi876 And don't forget some other games that cancelled their game before the Switch was a thing. Looking at you Hyper Light Drifter
@adh56 no sir. We’re only working with LRG on one run for PS4, no other titles.
@mvbv I mean, it's not exactly something you can be mad about. It's have cost them more than they'd earn, so cancelling the Wii U port was a good decision.
People tend to forget how much of a commercial failure the Wii U was. All the people who didn't "stick to their promises" couldn't afford risking their company going under by putting their game on a console that hardly had a future or a sizable playerbase.
Can't really blame them for that. It'd be like me asking you to choose between making me angry but having food on your table for you and your children, or making me happy but giving up your home and the ability to provide for your family.
Irrational.
Will be getting this for sure
This is looking much much better than the original announcement days. Somehow I thought this launched a long time ago to no fanfare. Glad to see it's still kicking.
@Yorumi massively appreciate you saying that. Battle Princess Madelyn and NAIRI: Tower of Shirin are two games that my team and I took to Kickstarter, through to release with the developers. It’s something we really, really wanted to address. Anything with the Hound Picked Games tag WILL communicate and WILL deliver.
YAY!!!
I like how varied this looks. So many 2D retro games have very grid-style level design with tons of copy paste graphics. This looks much more hand crafted.
Mattle Princess Badeline
I almost teared up seeing the Wii U is going to see some actual new software on it.
Wii U underestimated beast, U.
Buying this on Wii U day 1. Many thanks to @eripmav and the dev team for making it happen.
Dead Collector: Bring out yer dead!
Nintendo: Here' one.
Dead Collector: Nine pence.
Wii U: I'm not dead!
Dead Collector: 'Ere, he says he's not dead.
Nintendo: Yes he is
Wii U: I'm not.
Definitely a Wii U purchase for me. I really should start picking up more Indy games on Wii U. Juggling two Switches is easy when you can share game cards but when it comes to Indy titles, since most are digital, it's easier to get the one copy on the shared platform (Wii U) than double dipping. BTW this game looks beautiful.
@LightyKD I'll talk up the Wii U's indie selection all day. Guacamelee with local co-op, Runbow, Affordable Space Adventures, Shovel Knight, Runner 2, Little Inferno, multiple Shantae games, (so, basically everything that was in two Humble Nindie Bundles. I hope another one of those happens soon). Here's a short list of greats: Stealth Inc 2, SteamWorld Dig, The Fall, Sportsball, Gunman Clive, Freedom Planet, Swords & Soldiers, Human Resource Machine, Fast Racing Neo (FAST RMX on Switch isn't very different), Year Walk (points for weirdness), Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails
@eripmav I would be willing to pay double the price of a PS4 release if you did a Limited Run Games version for Switch. Everything about this game that I have seen over the past few years has continually hit me right, smack in the nostalgia.
Yessss, Wii U!:3
