Last month, Japanese publication Famitsu revealed the first two games in the tactical role-playing series Langrisser would be receiving remakes on the Nintendo Switch. As previously noted, both games include modern touches like enhanced visuals and voice acting.
The debut trailer for Langrisser I & II on the Nintendo Switch has now been released by Chara-Ani, reconfirming the title's arrival in Japan on 7th February 2019. Based on what we can see, it looks like it'll be a respectable remake of the original games developed by Masaya Games and first released on the Sega Mega Drive in 1991. If you're not familiar with the Langrisser series, be sure to check out our feature.
Gematsu also reports a limited edition of the two-in-one release is now available to pre-order in Japan. It includes a copy of the game, limited edition box, art book and an original soundtrack CD. First-print copies of Langrisser I & II will also include a download code - providing access to a special "Classic Mode" where users can play each game in its original form. A new heroine will also be playable in this mode, with the artwork done by the game's original artist, Satoshi Urushihara.
Have you played a Langrisser game before? Do you like the look of this trailer? Are you excited about playing the first two games coming to Switch? Tell us below.

Oh boy, a minute of anime portraits with five seconds of gameplay! What a great trailer, it gave me such a good look at the game!
...
I am actually pretty interested in this game, but they really could've done much better with the trailer.
@Varkster Yeah I've seen enough Japanese trailers to know that it's a trend...but that doesn't make it any less annoying to me. Unless the game is a visual novel or heavily narrative-driven, I like to get a good feel for the gameplay more than the story or characters when I watch game trailers.
The art is so awful that I have trouble caring.
Day 1.
If only they stop making the sprites look like a mobile chibi flash game then maybe I would be interested. For now I still had second thoughts on this but might give it a chance if they show me more gameplay. Here's hoping the Grandia I & II remasters doesn't suffer a similar fate.
If the DLC changes the battle sprites to the old school versions in addition to the character prtraits, it would either be the best bang-for-your-buck DLC ever, or it would make the game as a whole the most expensive re-release ever made, depending on how you look at it...
...I wonder how much Der Langrisser goes for these days...
@retro_player_22 Warsong was my fave genesis game, but I'll happily admit the graphics were rubbish. At least in the new game you can see the soldiers lol. (But tbh, that resolution screen isn't really gameplay so doesn't impact the game any! The actual strategic play was great...which is the main thing for a strategy game lol!)
It's probably a case of Urushihara's art style developing over the years, but man, I did not recognize the characters in this trailer as the ones from old artwork. Looks a lot more generic.
Although arguably Urushihara's style was generic for 90s manga...
@SmaggTheSmug
I don't understand why they felt the need to dramatically change the style. It might have been generic 90's anime style, but now it's generic 20teens anime style...
Plus now every female character has miles of exposed legs, chest, etc, while the men stay safely armored. That alone tells me not to buy this, should it come state side. I've got no patience for the male/female sexualization imbalance in games.
@aznable I don't know if it's Urushihara returning, but his style may have just changed over the years (90s were 20+ years ago...).
As for "imbalance": Urushihara is known for his sexy drawings and the exposed skin was there in the original. One does not hire a pinup artist to draw puritan art.
one of the best games during sega mega drive era. So glad i can relive the experience again in a remake. Must buy!
@SmaggTheSmug
All this gameplay, I can't handle it! Ah yes, that's better, let us look at the 2D artwork. Phew, almost thought I'd have to endure more than 6 seconds of gameplay, because that would've been nuts!
It's not like I'm buying a game based on whether the gameplay looks fun, right?
Langrisser II is a fantastic game, the SNES and PC-FX versions had branching paths - and you could even become the Prince of Darkness yourself!
I hope this gets an official English localization.
Starring:
Not the guy from Ys, this is a different guy, in his breakout role.
I have good news for fans of Satoshi Urushihara artwork. I heard that the First-edition copies will get a free DLC “classic mode” that allows players to see Urushihara's old illustrations in-game — he's even drawn his take on the new character for use in this mode.
@LaytonPuzzle27 Thank heavens for that! Still, having that done as DLC is the same nonsense as was done with the Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology on 3DS: Update game with dogshit new artstyle, charge extra for game to not make player want to stab his own eyes out... (At least this one is free at first.)
