Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is getting its biggest helping yet of DLC goodness this week in the form of Torna – The Golden Country, but the way in which Nintendo is distributing this stand-alone story has caused some confusion for players.
We've had a few concerned emails from readers wondering exactly how they can purchase this new content; do they need the expansion pass (which is available via the original game) or the stand-alone release, which is coming in physical form? It's quite an unusual situation as DLC is usually dependant on owning the original game, so we'll forgive the befuddlement this once.
In short, there are two ways you can purchase the Torna – The Golden Country expansion. You can pick the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 expansion pass via the game itself, and the content will unlock on the 14th of September. However, it's also possible to buy a physical version which does not require you to own the original Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The catch here is that the physical version doesn't launch until next week (September 21st) so you'll have to wait a little longer for that edition.
To be honest, we're not sure why you'd want to buy this add-on story if you hadn't already played the main game, but hey - each to their own. Fans of boxed titles will at least get another red spine to put on their shelves, so that's something.

So, is it like... Worth it as a standalone release?
Considering that it's a prequel story, some players might want to play the prequel before the main game itself.
I'm glad that this is getting a physical release itself, this is what I'm opting for. It apparently even includes its own expansion pass code, so you can enjoy that with Xenoblade 2 too.
"Choice"? I'm getting both. Already have the DLC, and I will be buying the physical edition because I'm a mindless shill for the series.
@EvilLucario That means you're going to receive an additional expansion pass code you won't be able to redeem. I guess you'll need to share it with someone.
Does anyone know the file size of the DLC?
Oh, I thought the physical had both the original and the expansion on there
@RupeeClock Might give it away, yeah. It won't unlock the actual expansion story though, I'd imagine.
We'll see when it releases though.
So....
Basically it called Xenoblade Chronicles 2.5 ?
@subpopz So it's kinda like New Super Luigi U? (Not in terms of gameplay, of course!)
Yeah it should be more of an "expansion pack" (more like Destiny 2's Forsaken, or Diablo III's Reaper of Souls than what you normally think of as "DLC")
While I definitely felt like XC2 is the weakest in the trilogy, I still enjoyed it enough to pre-order the physical edition of Torna the other day.
@Anti-Matter Well no its 1.5 or 2 minus a half
@Bunkerneath No its a separate game. It's not as big a game as the main game, but it's big enough to be a full RPG on its own, just not as utterly massive as the main game. The DLC pack for the main game includes it however.
Xenoblade 2 + 0.5 = 1.5? (Edit: Oh now I see your edit that makes more sense )
Does it explain the game's mechanics? As someone who's never played Xenoblade before due to being overwhelmed by the game's size I'd consider starting with this...
@NEStalgia It's a prequal to 2 so it must be less than 2
Maybe they are releasing it in physical cart because of file sizes?
Got it before the Amazon deal went away - so only 31.99.
Basically the season pass in physical form for $2 dollars more. And I can keep in my LE box.
Always best to hold off on the Season Pass till the end
@Damo "You Don't Need Xenoblade Chronicles 2 To Play Torna – The Golden Country
DLC or physical game card? The choice is yours"
You dont' need it, but if you buy this game - Torna - digitally it's still $39.99, but if you buy the expansion pass digitally it's only $29.99.
I understand people may want to pay an extra $10 for a physical box but paying an extra $10 digitally seems a bit odd if the digital "game" or expansion pass will work without the original.

I was going to get this and play it first, I like things chronologically, but too many people have told me there would be "spoilers" to the main game if I did that, so I'll play it the way it released. When I can get them both on sale for $60. Just started DQXI, I'm in no rush.
I'm 23 hours into Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Started about 7 days ago), I'll be waiting until I finish to get the DLC. Loving the game so far.
Lazy journalism. File size should have been mentioned somewhere here, particularly with Switch all but entirely requiring a large SD card in some variety.
I have yet to play 2 so this sounds like a great way to see if I like it, plus since it is a prequel it will play proper going from this to the full game story wise.
They're already confirmed that on E3.
Torna is 3.2 gb size, btw.
@ArcanaXVI
In the Gamescom thing, or whatever, they said it didn’t matter which you play first, because they both fill in gaps for each other.
@ArcanaXVI original Xenoblade 2 also will ruin some major reveals in Torna, huh.
Interesting that they've bothered to make this a standalone release too. Must be worth it, in their eyes.
I will get this but I am nervous that I won’t enjoy the cast of playable characters.
@rjejr wait after its release before deciding. So far, all we have are assumptions of the best order.
@ArcanaXVI Anyone who played XC2 knows the overall story of Torna, the villians, their motives, who dies and who survives. Those are much bigger spoilers than what's guaranteed to be spoiled by Torna. Let's first see what they reveal in Torna before assuming the best order.
The game director clearly supported the idea of people starting with Torna and said they considered having it as the first part of XC2, but in the end the scope was too big for a single game. So it wouldn't be surprising if the author intended order was Torna first, but it was too small for a full game.
I also thought the phsyical version contained both games. Why buy the physical then, you ask? For the same reason I buy anything physical.
To be honest, we're not sure why you'd want to buy this add-on story if you hadn't already played the main game
For those that want to play it in chronological order and may not have played vanilla XC2 yet (won't be me, ijs )
I'm just waiting for GameFly to realize that a physical copy is coming so I can throw it into my queue. Any day now GF...
@subpopz Yeah. Also my biggest reason to get DLC is the extra story ones. And usually those come last.
I never get items, costume skins or new mode DLC. So the Season pass usually not anything I want till the very end. Easy to hold off.
This game is the most fun that I've had with JRPG in recent years and I don't even like the main characters that much. (I find Pyra and Rex annoying)
Such a good game.
And Ninty is so smart to release the expansion as a standalone so more people may pick up the game if they are not sure about the main game.
@TechEagle no, it should, if done right, give greater meaning to moments in the prequel.
@ArcanaXVI is right, prequels should always be played after the original, the word prequel literally tells you this. Preceding game and prequel are not the same thing. A prequel is a follow up set before the previous film/game.
@rjejr play Xenoblade 2 first, when they say you don't need to play Xenoblade 2, that's just marketing to draw in people who maybe don't want to invest in previous game. If you don't intend to play 2, go ahead, but if you do, you are going yo have moments spoiled, in a 100 hr game. I'd rather have the shorter prequel "spoiled" than the main game.
I am torn on this title (pun intended), since I don't know if its worth 40 Dollar/Euro, content-wise. Also, I expect lots of rehashed areas.
If I'll buy it, I go for the physical version though. However I have only played the base-game for 20 hours so far...
I've got the Season Pass so I'll be getting it digitally, but I'm tempted to get the physical copy so my kids can share that on their Switches. Though, neither of them has beaten the main game yet or even played it much for a good long while, so no rush.
@Wraggadam1 "but if you do, you are going yo have moments spoiled, in a 100 hr game. I'd rather have the shorter prequel "spoiled" than the main game"
Anyone who's not played the game and has read through the comments section is likely to know the twists by now. LOL.
At the end of the day, XC2's story is pretty mediocre. What makes it stand out is the game-play.
@Henmii Keep playing the main game until you've finished the main story, then you can decide if you want to get the expansion.
@RennanNT "wait after its release before deciding"
I was thinking about that. Besides spoilers I was also thinking it might be a better game control wise so XC2 might play worse if I play Torna first. But I will wait for reviews and see.
so...it works just like similar cases. Bethesda has done this several times with Prey, Dishonored, and Wolfenstein as examples. DLC add-ons grow large enough to become their own thing. Its not complicated
@Tsurii "the thing about spoilers is nonsense"
Well I believe you, but then again I also believe this person
@Wraggadam1 "If you don't intend to play 2, go ahead, but if you do, you are going yo have moments spoiled,"
So as I just told the other person, I'll wait and read a lot of reviews and comments before playing either, probably not until next year, unless the eShop gets a BF 40% off sale on the bundle. Which is how I bought Mario and Rabbids complete after E3.
Who knows, maybe they'll re-edit both games together like Godfather 1 and 2, or the 3 1/2 version of Watchmen and Black Freighter.
@Anti-Matter
Xenoblade Chronicles 1.5
It’s a prequel to 2.
If you own both do you think the Blades from 2 will transfer to Torna?
I've yet to play XC2 but am considering picking this up. It's shorter so more manageable time wise for me. Honestly, overall seems more interesting too. The characters look more up my alley.
Good to see Nintendo doing something like this. Wish more publishers did the old expansion packs that also can be standalone. Being Nintendo the price is a little high but there are many series I discovered in the past thanks to releases like this.
@Anti-Matter More like Xenoblade Chronicles 1.5 since it is a prequel story. Also, your English has gotten much better bro. Kudos.
@EvilLucario Same
I've already got the season pass so no need for me to get it
Love XC2 and will get the physical. Wonder if they improved performance of the engine at all. Parts of the main game were super grainy in handheld mode.
Loved XC1, thought XCX was ok, and was completely put off of XC2 by it's design choices. As well as some of the gameplay changes.
I wonder if i should give Torna a try...?
@subpopz I'm 130 hours into Octopath with 3 character's stories left to finish. I did not expect to be playing this for so long. It's not a bad thing, but I've accumulated a backlog of like 4 games over the past 2 months because of it.
@Yosheel Totally
My main doubt remains...the season pass code that comes with the retail version, contains everything save the Torna game? because it would be a serious misuse of space if I get the retail version and still have to carry the whole filesize of the Torna expansion because I want to use the free pass.
@rjejr
It's all about the combo value. Bayonetta is 30 USD digital por Switch...but if you get it after purchasing Bayonetta 2, the price goes down to 10.
In this case is the same...if someone already gave Nintendo the full price or the original XC2, they can get this prequel for less money...getting both is cheaper than getting each of them separately.f
I dont think DLC is the proper term
@Yomerodes Well yeah, if you want to be logical about it I suppose.
Physical for me.
Been playing XC2 after I managed to get the special edition.
I'm on chapter 3 right now, but I don't know: should I finish the normal XC2 before playing this?
Or playing this would make sense before continuing XC2? (since it's a prequel)
So Torna is on a physical card with a code for the expansion pass or is it completely digital? I am thinking about getting the game physically.
@Spectra i personally absolutely adored it ! What didn't you like about it ?
So I downloaded Torna. Heard that I also get 15 Legendary Cores for XBC2, fired up XBC2 and played it for another 5 hours to do the side quests for Tand have yet to start Torna.
I'm at 180 hours in XBC2 and with the exception of Odyssey, it's pretty much the only thing I've been playing this year
I think that playing either game first will spoil bits of the other game — so I'm interested at seeing how Monolith addressed this — I'm certain that they took this into consideration and crafted something that has mystery either way you flip the coin.
Can't wait
@puddinggirl,
That would be the sensible thing to do. But by the time I am finished the dlc-card may be out of print. Ah well, I'll read some reviews and see what I'll do.
