Every month, Nintendo invites Japanese players to take part in random questionnaires to determine which games they would like to recommend - a slightly different form of user reviews, if you will. This is often a great way for smaller, indie titles to reach a new audience, as players often vote for the potentially hidden gems that find themselves buried on the eShop.
This month's data shows that Hollow Knight came out on top, with players' votes from the month of June all being added up. We thought the game was excellent in our review so we're not surprised to see it grab the number one spot, and there a few other crackers that have made the top ten, too. This list is digital-only and can include any title - not just those that were released last month.
1) Hollow Knight (Team Cherry)
2) Celeste (Matt Makes Games)
3) Yooka-Laylee (Team17)
4) Overcooked: Special Edition (Team17)
5) Gorogoa (Annapurna Interactive)
6) Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (Inti Creates)
7) Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition (Mojang)
8) Stardew Valley (Chucklefish)
9) Ikaruga (Nicalis)
10) Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 (Capcom)
We have to say that we think they've created a pretty decent list here, with a nice selection of games that deserve to be played.
But what do you think? Do you agree with the list? Have you been playing something else recently that you think deserves some love? Share your favourite titles with the community below.

Hollow Knight and Celeste is a cracking top two. If they don’t mop up a good few GotY awards between them I’ll be surprised... and disappointed.
Still on the fence about grabbing hollow Knight and I have no idea why... I think it might be about time I take the plunge; the amount of praise the title is getting is just incredible.
@ryancraddock Erm wrong game info on the right
Hollow Knight deserves all the praise it can get. It is one of my favorite games of all time.
I'd play Hollow Knight as a rental. For some reason the aesthetic and setting doesn't draw me in, but this many people can't be wrong about it quality of its gameplay, so I'll take a dive eventually, one way or the other.
@Bunkerneath Eek! Fixed now!
It's fairly cheap on top of being absolutely fantastic @meloman
I quickly became bored of Hollow knight.
It's art style is stunning though.
i find HK hard to get into , i can see its nice looking and all, but dying and going all the way back and having to play everything again is s a pain
I voted for Portal Knights.
Can't wait for the physical, anyone heard any news? As they are ignoring my tweets
@jockmahon Hollow Knight doesn't have any perma death. When you die you respawn at the last Rest point used and you lose your money and a chunk of your Soul container. Killing the ghost you left brings them back.
You don't lose any abilities or anything like that and there's usually a rest spot before a boss as well as near a fast travel point.
I can see why I too can't stop playing that game.
I wonder if Hollow Knight has the power to become the new "indie face". So far I think only Shovel Knight reached that kind of notoriety, with even Cave Story being only second place to it.
Glad to see that Japanese gamers have better taste than American ones. Afterall, Yooka Laylee is a criminally underrated game
Why Mega Man Legacy 2? I thought part 1 was generally deemed superior. Not really quibbling, though - that is a very, very good top 10.
Yooka-Laylee!?
@Switch_will_fail or - another way to look at it - criminally overrated. It's not, obviously, but it's not anything other than a 6 out of 10 game.
@Balladeer Hollow Knight released last year in reality, and won zero GOTY awards from my knowledge. It sucks but Cuphead just stormed all the indie awards (and you know they never make it to the triple A rewards becuz $$$). I doubt it will be able to run for awards again, but would be nice
@Pazuzu666 Well hey man, that's like your opinion
@jockmahon then steer clear of Dark Souls when/if it gets released 😉
@Switch_will_fail the dude abides.
It’s a little surreal to hear that a game company based in the same city that you are is successful as a Nintendo brand. Go Adelaide! And go Team Cherry!
I'm amazed that this is so successful, just because watching it at Treehouse, nothing about it seemed all that interesting to me. I find that for some reason, especially the Nintendo crowd seems to go totally crazy for one indie or another like it's the greatest game of all any time an indie comes along that's actually decent as opposed to a garage hack. It's hard to filter when it's actually an amazing game that must be experienced or when it's just the echobox of "finally an indie game that seems like an actual game."
Lumines Remastered is the best recent digital downloads, I can play this forever.
For the most addictive: Vostok Inc. This game is like Steamworld Dig/2, it wastes your time like no other.
Gorogoa is the most unique game in the eShop. It changes your perception.
Sky Rogue is the most hidden gem. This game proves that graphics is not everything. It's more fun than any flight shooting game, I wish they made one for VR.
It's a steal for 15 bucks.
It can be frustrating...but boss fights are like a dance...there's a pattern to everything. When you figure out an enemys weakness and then exploit it...victory is very satisfying.
There's a way to minimize backtracking after defeat...I wont say what it is though it probably isnt really a spoiler.
Great game....really enjoying it so far.
@Richard_Atkinson grab it, i was playing God of War and Yakuza 0 before grabbing this one , and from that momment i've been playing 3 to 4 hours daily
For me Holllow Knight is one of the best Metroidvania type of games of all time , was playing God of War and Yakuza and i stopped because of this one, great graphics, great music, and the game is hard enough that you keep coming back "one more time" to defeat that hard boss.
@SmaggTheSmug While you are accurately describing the mechanics, @jockmahon is also right that some of the save points related to difficult boss battles can get frustrating. I find some are just long enough and challenging enough to get you thinking focusing on a different task than fighting the boss and the muscle memory and progress I made in tactics is slightly lost. Maybe I'm just getting old. Love the game, overall, but this is the one area where many will get discouraged and miss out.
@guamyankee Curious about your way to minimize backtracking for boss fights. Go ahead and spoil with a spoiler alert.
@NEStalgia It's a standout in my gaming history, anyway. Whatever that's worth. Tight controls, demanding challenge, large environment, plenty of strategic choices and an intriguing, rich, world. For anyone that enjoys the Metroidvania genre it is a must play, from my point of view.
I actually just picked this up last night. I was going to wait for the physical release but I decided for $15 I might as well just download it. Cleared some space off my 200GB SD card to do it, but it was something that I needed to do at this point.
I am really surprised by how much I enjoyed playing this game for the first time last night. When I was researching the game I was getting kinda scared away by all the comparisons to Dark Souls and people complaining about the difficulty because I usually hate games like that.
The low price is definitely what did it for me though, for $15 I was willing to take a risk. Glad I did, the game is very well polished and it is quite pleasant to run around and explore with. I haven't gotten that far into it so my opinion might change, but I think I definitely won't be feeling ripped off by this one even if it gets really tough later. Some games feel like they are just going out of their way to piss you off, but this doesn't feel like one of them.
Interesting that the Japanese players voted for so many Western-developed games, given the old saw about Western games struggling to flourish in that market.
I think Ikaruga, the Bloodstained spin-off, and the Mega Man collection are the only Eastern-developed games on the list.
(Obviously, Stardew Valley is heavily influenced by the Harvest Moon series.)
@Bunkerneath I would like to know this. Holding off to see if it gets physical as a few I’ve bought now I wish I’d waited and I have a huge back log so no rush.
@aaronsullivan Im not too far in, buts its been my experience so far that there's usually a save point near each boss.
@Richard_Atkinson
I was on the fence as well, picked it up a few days ago. Awesome game
