The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has now sold over a million physical copies in Japan, according to the Media Create charts for May 28th to June 3rd.
The Switch launch title sold 6,722 copies during this period, making it good enough for 9th place. It has now sold 1,004,689 copies in Japan since it launched early last year.
Elsewhere, 2D fighter BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle struggled to make an impact on Switch, limping into charts in 17th position with 4,271 copies sold. The PS4 version fared better, hitting 4th place with 11,696. Both of these figures include the Limited Edition version of the game as well as the standard SKU. It was good news for Sony in general, as Dark Souls: Remastered and Detroit: Become Human took first and second places in the chart respectively.
Nintendo can't be too annoyed, however; Splatoon 2, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Kirby: Star Allies all made the top ten.
- [PS4] Dark Souls Remastered (From Software, 05/24/18) – 19,870 (91,608)
- [PS4] Detroit: Become Human (SIE, 05/25/18) – 16,932 (56,480)
- [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Bundle Version Included) (Nintendo, 07/21/17) – 14,317 (2,350,839)
- [PS4] BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle (Limited Edition Included) (Arc System Works, 05/31/18) – 11,696 (New)
- [NSW] Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze (Nintendo, 05/04/18) – 11,534 (154,571)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 10,656 (1,562,148)
- [PSV] Full Metal Panic! Fight! Who Dares Wins (Limited Edition Included) (Bandai Namco, 05/31/18) – 10,520 (New)
- [NSW] Kirby: Star Allies (Nintendo, 03/16/18) – 8,655 (517,963)
- [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Limited Edition Included) (Nintendo, 03/03/17) – 6,722 (1,004,689)
- [PS4] Liar Princess and the Blind Prince (Limited Edition Included) (NIS, 05/31/18) – 6,487 (New)
On the hardware side of things, it was a case of normal service; the Switch remains Japan's best-selling system at the moment.
- Switch – 40,587 (36,590)
- PlayStation 4 – 13,025 (12,595)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 5,146 (4,887)

Congrats to BotW, well deserved.
okay Japanese devs, are we getting more third parties games now (Ports/Original)? because Switch is doing fantastic! (Despite not being 1st and 2nd this week)
also congrats to BOTW, for the successful sales! well deserved. 👍
NDF: Monster Hunter World ONLY sold 1 million in japan in it's first week on PS4, what a failure.
Also NDF: Congrats to a 1st party Nintendo IP selling the same amount in 14 months, what a success!
@Menchi187 I think the excitement is because Zelda was never a big thing in Japan, if I'm not mistaken the last one that sold over a million was Ocarina of Time for the N64.
Monster Hunter is huge there so it's not a surprise that sold well.
@Menchi187 thanks for your input. Your understanding of sales, as well as pretty much everything, is nonexistent. Congrats to MHW for selling about half of MH 3DS games in Japan and vanishing from the charts in no time. See? NDF can troll too
Edit: please keep your 94wpm to yourself, I'm not interested in discussing with 10 year olds
@tourjeff Irrelevant. Companies care about total worldwide sales and nothing else. Only the NDF cares when it hurts their egos (which is a lot the last decade).
Xbox One products are Always on Bottom Two in Japan.

@DockEllisD thanks.
@gortsi "I'm not interested in discussing with 10 year olds" Yet you always reply to him.
@Menchi187 No it's not. Irrelevant is to compare a game that is available on a Nintendo platform with another that is not.
Do you really expect them to "celebrate" the sales of a game that is not even available for players that visit this website?
And the article is about the Japan sales not global sales so again, it's irrelevant what they think about the global sales.
@MsJubilee I respond to some of his most obvious [email protected]@@s just to set the record straight, although it's the site's job to ban trolls, not mine. Are you inclined to take a person who uses words like NDF seriously?
@tourjeff even with global sales BOTW is at least 2 million copies ahead of MHW. Troll can't even do basic math
(edit) Mixed bag for 3rd party games on Switch - it seems to be picking up in some cases . Hope Octopath, does well.
Great to see Detroit up there. A really fantastic gaming experience you do not see often.
Great for Zelda... it deserves every single sale.
Incidentally, the block button is one of the greatest features NL has ever implemented.
Zelda has never been a huge seller in Japan, so that's quite an accomplishment for Nintendo.
@gortsi
3DS install base: 21M (using 2016 numbers)
PS4 install base: 6.72
Moving "half" in a fraction of an install base (at a 30% higher price point) is actually an amazing achievement for Capcom.
That's the install base now, not when MH3 or 4 or the other variations came out. And nobody even mentioned MHW before the troll brought it up, how is this relevant to this week's charts?
Considering Japan is not Zelda country that is pretty good! Nintendo has always been good at evergreen titles.
@tourjeff - So you're saying Zelda is an outright flop because the global sales on a topic of regional sales?
Cancel the Switch. It's just not good.
@Paraka Where did you get that from on my comments?
Follow the conversation again.
The higher Blazblue sales on Sony over Nintendo is interesting, but it should be remembered that the PS4 still, at this point, has a higher install base than the Switch. Also, I'd argue that if there is one genre that is amply supplied for the Switch, it's versus fighters - maybe even more than 2D platformers. Apart from the torrent of class Neo Geo games, which retail for peanuts, there are big retail releases such as Pokken, Arms, USF II and the SF collection - not to mention Smash on the way. It's going to be a hard sell for third-party fighters trying to hit 100,000 copies from now on. Maybe DB FighterZ has a chance.
@Paraka - when I hit reply it makes the screen "jump" and I didn't recheck who it hit. Mobile is hard yo.
It was intended for @Menchi187
@Menchi187
"Companies care about total worldwide sales and nothing else."
Thanks. Just laughed so hard tea came out of my nose.
@gortsi It was 15 million for "4"
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/02/3ds_sales_tracking_ahead_of_game_boy_advance_in_japan
and the top is Generations in 15/16.
Absolutely nothing really - Zelda is a massive success (and deserved) in every possible way regardless. Just defending all things MHW 😀...
Hmmm...Sony can't quite crowd Nintendo out of the top 10, can they?
More than a year after the Switch launched and it still remains the best game on the system.
It's hard to compare between genres, but BotW is just too much goodness in one package.
@Agramonte MHW is a phenomenal success, no doubt about that. Unfortunately I can't get into these games whether they're portable or not, just not my thing even though I've tried many times
Kirby is still doing really well isn't it?
@gortsi Oh I hear you - not for everyone.
I thought that it already had sold one million.
Not too surprising considering BBTAG's DLC drama (which means people may just be waiting for the inevitable ASW expanded version with all the characters included) along with Mori's disasterous interview about how they made the game with simplified mechanics to appeal to the Western market which is both disheartening to the Asian market AND a rather rude decision to make on behalf of the Western one. I do really like the game, but I can't say this backlash is surprising.
@CrimsonMoonMist
I, for one, would have waited on my Cross Tag Battle purchase if I'd realized the characters I was most interested in playing were being with-held as paid DLC (but those characters still appearing in the story campaign as enemies, emphasizing their on-disc DLC nature), or the characters that seemed like obvious inclusions are simply nowhere to be seen (like Taokaka from BlazBlue, although their unusable chibi form is decorating the lobby's item shop, rubbing salt in the wound).
Feeling pretty burned on that purchase right now.
It is still going to take a bit for the FGC to migrate to Switch...at least in equal numbers to ps4 (plus the , but as long as the games keep coming...you can count me in.
@TrixieSparkle Reminds me of the whole SFV tease where DLC fighters would show up in story mode before you could even buy them. Though at least they had the excuse of being unfinished unlike this game's first DLC batch which was out on release day. Kind of makes the gesture of making the two RWBY gals free seem kind of hollow.
@gortsi @MsJubilee
Block button is your friend. I’ve blocked all the trolls and it makes the comment section so much more enjoyable. I see your guys response to them still though, so I’m just saying... why bother? Block is junk filter for this site.
A little surprised to see Detroit selling well. Didn’t seem like something that would exactly set the world on fire.
Imagine being so fragile that you need to block comments with which you disagree. It's not like you get notifications on your phone every time someone says something mean about Nintendo. I'll never get people who enjoy living in an echo chamber.
I've played the Breath of the Wild demo a few times but I still don't have the game. It just doesn't feel like Zelda to me, and this comes from someone who loved the NES original.
DAMN THIS IS HUGEEE! don’t care what anybody else says. The fact that Zelda moved 1 million units on switch alone is amazing. Finally the series getting the recognition in Japan it always deserved. Lol been watching that sale counter since 700,000 for this moment 😍
What's this, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, an incomplete game is struggling in Japan? Hmmm...I wonder why.
@Menchi187 Oh I don't know, it might have something to do with the fact that Zelda has notoriously done poorly in Japan while normally Monster Hunter has done amazing?
Those are very poor sales for a mainline MH game in Japan for that time period, conversely those are very good sales for a Zelda game in Japan. Frame of reference is important here.
@electrolite77 What do you expect? They have to move the goalposts when their original narrative doesn't fit.
They sure do love 🦑 🐙 in Japan that game has been in the top more than any other game on switch
@gortsi I believe it’s passed 8 million worldwide
"The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has now sold over a million physical copies in Japan, according to the Media Create charts for May 28th to June 3rd."
Well no duh BlazBlue looks like its struggling compared to that, it just came out!
Plus, its a fighting game, a niche genre, being compared to the most famous of RPG's, which is a popular genre.
@Kinoen I think they mean the Switch version of Blazblue. That one has a bit less than half of the sales of the PS4 version.
It's at 17th place on the list with 4,271 units sold. The bottom 10 of the top 20 or so is missing from this article.
@Agramonte Ugh I wish I enjoyed MHW more. Just not at all fond of a lot of the systematic changes they made. Just gonna have to dump another couple hundred hours into MHXX.
@Indielink the good thing is that there is an option for either camp. MHW is not for everyone, even some MH fans. So good they bringing XX over. I personally can't go back, but that is just me.
Higher sales for BlazBlue on PS4 are hardly surprising. The system has better controls and reputation as a fighting game machine. A friend who's into competitive fighting games specifically got a PS4 gamepad because of the better D-Pad. And that's not even taking the plethora of arcade sticks into consideration.
Also I want that Liar Princess game.
@Agent721 I won't block anyone. It only takes a millisecond to scroll past someone's stupid comment, but sometimes I like reading what these people say because it makes me wonder what planet they're from - it's not dissimilar to watching vids on youtube about sovereign citizens or flat earthers. They're like our very own sideshow curiosities.
But yeah on some forums and websites their brand of derailing and sly digs would have got them banned in a heartbeat, I think they're just really soft here.
@Agramonte Walking while using pots and swapping armor mid quest just seems like blasphemy to me.
But oh that no loading screen map is lovely.
@WiltonRoots
I got so annoyed seeing nonsense arguments presented as fact that I blocked them. I come here for fun, not ridiculous arguments by young children or adults acting like young children. Life is just too short to waste my free time on that, so I’m real glad they added that option.
@Ernest_The_Crab Aye, and BoTW will still make any other game look like its struggling.
If you mean BlazBlue vs. BlazBlue (PS4 vs. Switch), PS is the go-to system for all things anime, so its no surprise the game is doing better there.
