Today sees a brand new update (and therefore some brand new content) for battle royale phenomenon Fortnite, and if you've become just as hopelessly obsessed as almost everyone else on the planet, you'll no doubt want to know exactly what to expect.
First up is the Stink Bomb. Acting as a grenade for your inventory, the Stink Bomb explodes into a cloud on impact and slowly damages any of the poor souls desperately stuck inside. If you start to see these deadly clouds on the battlefield, make sure to keep out of their deadly fumes.
There have also been some bug fixes related to Discord integration, and improvements have been made to "information displayed when in a Battle Royale", but the most exciting news is the return of Final Fight: Teams of 20. This limited time mode has five teams of 20 taking each other on, with the Storm Circles giving players more room to hunt down opponents. The final circle triggers a countdown timer and, when the time is up, the team with the most players remaining wins.
Mode Details:
- Final Fight plays similar to standard Battle Royale, but instead of the Storm circles closing all the way, the Storm stops after the 3rd circle.
- When the circles have finished closing in, the final countdown timer will begin.
- The remaining teams will battle it out until the timer expires.
- The team with the most players remaining at the end of the timer wins!
- In the event of a tie, the two (or more) teams tied for the lead win the match.
The game's servers went down at 9am BST (4am ET) today to implement the latest patch, with a return to normality expected in just a few short hours' time.

I've been playing a bit of Fortnite and my opinion hasn't changed. It's alright, but I don't really understand why it is so popular.
I pretty much play Fortnite on my Switch all day long at work. By when I'm off of work I'm sick of it for the day and it's "me time" at that point.
@Grant007 Wow, what is your job where you can play games all day? I have had jobs in the past where I could play games a little bit during slow hours, but never all day!
@Heavyarms55 I work overseas in war zones
@Grant007 Oh... God that sucks. I hope ALL you have to do is play Switch games. I hope you days are as uneventful as possible until you come home. Stay safe!
@Heavyarms55 Thank you so much for the kind words.
I had my first solo Battle Royale victory in Fortnite last night. Didn't fire a bullet. What do I win?
I like this game a lot. It's a lot of fun to play.
@gcunit "Best Boy Scout Camper 2018"
Oh no, we are going to get an update on this game for every tiny little update now aren't we?
Not slagging the game off as I have actually been getting a bit addicted to it but I do not need to see a story every day on the game here as well as all on all the other gaming sites too.
This is your chance to be different!
@Stocksy I'll take it
No giro controls update. 😞
Still, will have to keep improving with the sticks. 🤗
@SBandy Agreed. Whilst Fortnite has been a win for Switch, it was an even bigger win for NL. Could do without the constant flow of Fortnite news we already get on other sites. I can always just not click on them, but it seems like content for contents sake.
I prefer constant news for Fortnite from Nintendo Life than constant news of what hackers do.
@RETRO_J Yes, I believe some of us do want to read this. I had no idea these were Switch only updates. Not sure where you got the fanboy snobbery from.
@Laxeybobby The hopes that they'll one day do the right thing and add gyro controls is basically what keeps me going in the game. I'm doing my best to learn all the basics and get as good as I can at the game and then when they add in the gyro controls, being able to finally aim will feel amazing.
Wake me up when we get Save the World on it. Battle Royale has too much of walking from place to place with it only getting exciting once you do meet people.
It certainly doesn't take Splatoon's place in my heart.
@GoldenGamer88 Oh God, finally someone with the same opinion! Why no-one complains that you basically run around collecting stuff for the first 5-10 minutes until some action starts... Especially as a noob on this game this is a huge turn off. Coming from Counter Strike and having played any online shooters beside Splatoon 2 recently, this game is suuuuuuper slow in terms of action... Still not used to it...
@mazzel I'm told PUBG is even slower than Fortnite. Seriously, have the map be a quarter of it is, give the players hover Boots and Speed Jumps and so on to give them Mobility and we'd have an action packed Battle Royale game that ain't the usual the stuff.
@mazzel @GoldenGamer88
That's part of the fun. It's a risk reward situation. You either go to places with really good drops where everyone will go or go somewhere with worse loot but evading combat. It also adds to the tension. You never know when you'll get sniped or followed by other players so you'll have to be alert.
If you take out those elements stops being what it is and basically becomes another generic shooter.
@Alber-san So you either go where everyone goes (i.e. Tilted) and get killed more or less immediately or you avoid conflict by going somewhere off path (and get just as good loot) but walk for miles. So you either get frustrated or bored out of your mind. I don't get it. It's just not my cup o tea, I guess.
@GoldenGamer88
I usually find a few people to fight along the way, but I understand it could be boring for people who want only action in their games. I'm a very patient person so I have no trouble waiting for battle.
Both you and @mazzel should try 50v50 tho. Try to land really close to where there won't be storm (the circle). There's always a lot more action going on there.
Honestly...
The game’s not terrible.
@Alber-san I get the point! Also that taking out these elements would make it like any other shooter. I mainly play 50v50 now for that exact reason. But still it's so slow compared to other shooters. And it doesn't have any tutorial for noobs, right? Or at least it's hidden pretty well...
@mazzel Try landing in Tilted Towers...believe me you will see action
@mazzel
Nope. You'll have to use youtube for that. Although I haven't used any tutorials and I feel like I'm learning simply by playing.
I've played PUBG on my phone.... And gyro does help, so would be fun to have some gyro on Fortnite in the distant future.
I play the game safe, at first, literally would go for the first half of the game avoiding everyone because I suck at one on one combat (my aiming is terrible) and my building is not the fastest..... But still fun to play with friends who are better in that sense.
My only wish is that you could earn coins as you win, because some dance moves are halarious but I don't have real money to spend at the moment
@BenAV That’s exactly what I’m doing. Just can’t get good enough with the analogue sticks. Yet my son (who plays XBone) has a go and picks it up with ease.
@Heavyarms55 I'd imagine the fact that it's free is a huge help.
@gatorboi352 Oh yeah, I am sure that goes a long way toward it.
@mazzel You must be playing squad or team modes. Give solo a shot. You'll die within the first 5 minutes and have all the action you could want.
@SimplyCinnamon53 I'll give it a try!
There is only one map, right?
@mazzel Yep, Tilted has the most action, but it can get boring going to the same place everytime so you can try Retail Row and Pleasant Park as well. That’s the thing about Fortnite, everyone has different strategies, you can go to the places mentioned above and get great loot but fight a bunch of people, or land some where like wailing woods where no one ever goes, try and hide and hope you make it to the end. I hope you find a way to enjoy the game, it really is fun once you get the hang of it and try to get a squad together
