It's fair to say that the return of the legendary Shining series to western shores isn't exactly what we - or many other fans - expected. Shining Resonance Refrain - which is coming to Switch, PS4 and Xbox One on July 11th - feels like a world apart from the turn-based strategy instalments which made the franchise so popular during the '90s, but we should probably just be grateful that the series has a future at all.
If you're a little more open-minded than us then you'll want to check out the latest trailer for the game, which gives a short look at the heroes you'll be controlling.
Here's some PR:
First off, we're introduced to Kirika Towa Alma, the Diva of Nature. She uses her bow to deal damage from a distance while supporting allies with healing magic.
Next, we meet Sonia Blanche, the Lightning Princess. Fierce, yet elegant, she darts across the battlefield with her sword and shield, dealing damage to single targets in quick bursts.
Following Sonia, Agnum Bulletheart, the Pyromaestro makes his appearance. Always aiming to be the center of attention, Agnum deals massive damage to large groups of enemies with explosive fire magic.
Cooling things down after Agnum's appearance, we have Lestin Sera Alma, the Glacier Sentinel. He uses ice magic to slow down enemies before cleaving through them with his trusty halberd.
Rinna, the Whirlwind Sylph brings some cheer to the party with her lighthearted attitude. She deals heavy damage from the back lines with powerful magic abilities.
Finally, we meet Yuma himself. Armed with the power of the Shining Dragon, he fights with dragon-like ferocity to protect his friends.
Never mind "get a load of these beats" - get a load of these names.

Ok! THIS LOOKS GOOD!
NO WAY
I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS
Woot!... perfect for after Ni No Kuni2!
Ys8 in June and Shining in July! (my US Amazon Switch pre-order says September 25th 🤔)
Already pre-ordered.
What a nice english dub cast
Load of the beats got, no regrets had.
@RegularGameFan the musical aspects, perhaps, depending on how much they influence the story. If they tie into the actual gameplay, I might even think something along the lines of Ar Tonelico (which will be totally expert of me despite not having played a single entry yet). But what I've briefly played of Eternal Sonata on a rental time 360 in a game cafe also had a strong impression on me with its battle system - slightly reminiscent of Valkyria Chronicles in its turn (you take turns but have a stamina gauge to position the characters and punch away in real time while it lasts) and making some use of weather conditions on the battlefield.
This game's BS (or maybe I should avoid abbreviating it, this being the internet and full of fans) reminds me more of what I've seen in gameplay videos of the newer Ys titles but with the visuals more reminiscent of the newer Tales ones. Not that such vibes don't appeal to me.
It's releasing too close to Octopath Traveller, I might buy it some other time but it seems forgettable from the trailer.
Bad timing Sega...
I don't get it, are they weapons or musical instruments? Do you play music to the monsters to kill them? Or hit them with it?
DRUM SOLO!
Sorry but no
GET A LOAD OF THIS!
GET A LOAD OF THIS!
GET A LOAD OF THIS!
GET A LOAD OF THIS!
Still interested but will get Octopath Travelers first.
ooooh I like the looks of this. Will be playing at some point. Any word on a price?
Getting Octopath, then Ys, then maybe this.
@Dayton311 50 bucks I think.
@Dayton311 $49.99. It comes with a metal slip case if you preorder.
Maybe this is Sega's answer to Mirage Sessions.
At any rate I never played the original games, so as long as it's good I'm interested. But yeah, if it was going to be so radically different they probably should have called it something else.
Weapons that double as musical instruments? Or vice versa? Clever, either way...
Ohhh deez beats! Looking forward to this game.
This looks fun! I was interested when I thought it would just be a standard fantasy JRPG, but I'm much more interested now.
@Kutal AUGH
HE'S NOT GONNA GET AWAAAY WITH THIS!!
oh wait....
Nnnnnnnn... No
Oooo I like
Wait a minute......this isn't Sonic the Hedgehog -_-
I'm really excited for this game.
Octopath Traveller, Y's VIII and Shining Resonance all release within a few weeks of each other. Not to mention, Mario Tennis Aces drops June 22nd and Wolfenstein June 29th, and Captain Toad Treasure Tracker the exact same day as Octopath, and Crash Trilogy the exact same day as Shining Resonance, rounding it off with Mega Man X Collection 1/2 July 24. it's gonna be madness from the 1 month period spanning Mario Tennis to Mega Man X.
@Yorumi
The game is supposedly pretty hard core as a JRPG (difficulty wise) with a very unique battle system. You'd probably like it.
Looks really cool, but this will have to wait until I'm done with Octopath. This trailer also made me think of the Tales game that's supposed to come to Switch. E3 reveal I hope?
This game actually looks decent. People need to start looking at things for what they are, not for what they think something should be.
This looks a LOT like a Tales game with music thrown in. Which is actually a compliment coming from me. I like the Tales franchise so this should be good. Kinda wish it played more like the originals or the PS2 games but it still should be good.
The real descendant of the classic Shining titles is Golden Sun.
But Camelot is too busy making Mario Aces and whatnot. When can we have another amazing RPG, Camelot!?
@Dualmask Been there, done that
