Update: As was rumoured, Zeraora is the new 'mon.
Here's some PR:
Zeraora is an Electric-type Pokémon that gathers electric energy from outside sources, emitting strong electrical currents from the pads on its hands and feet to create a powerful magnetic field. Zeraora uses this magnetic field to levitate and move through the air with extreme speed.
Name: Zeraora
Category: Thunderclap Pokémon
Height: 4'11"
Weight: 98.1 lb.
Type: ElectricThis Mythical Pokémon is said to be so fast that its maximum speed is the same as that of lightning strikes. When using massive amounts of electric energy for a powerful attack, Zeraora’s fur stands on end all over its body!
Zeraora is only available in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, and cannot be encountered in regular gameplay. Launched in November, 2017, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon are the latest titles in the core Pokémon video game series available exclusively on the Nintendo 3DSTM family of systems.
Original story: As you may well be aware, the upcoming Pokémon movie 'Everyone's Story' is gearing up for imminent release in Japan; the film is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theatres on 13th July, and we are expected to receive some brand new footage of the film early next week.
According to Serebii, some new footage of the movie will air on Japanese Variety Show Oha Suta on Monday 9th April, and as intriguing as that may be on its own for Poké-fans, the more exciting news is that a new Pokémon is set to be revealed during the show. Who could it be?
Well, before you get too excited, it's much more likely that this reveal will be an official announcement for Zeraora - an electric-type mythical Pokémon that was unveiled by datamines of Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon - rather than anything from the game(s) coming to Switch in the future. It might be quite some time until we see anything entirely new, but an official announcement for the (currently) last entry to the Pokédex will still be very welcome indeed.
Either way, it's still fun to speculate over what may or may not appear, and we'll make sure to keep an eye out for the announcement. Are you desperately waiting for news on the future of the Pokémon series on Switch? Let us know what you'd like to see in the comments.

I want Switch news. I’m looking forward to that game.
I wonder what kind of theme for Generation 8.
Are pokefans still excited for new single Pokemon if there's no new game coming? There's like 800 of them already...
Flying type eeveelution! Gamefreak employes are teasing it for months now, it was leaked and the new movie had a focus on the sky and the secondary main character has an eevee.
@darkswabber color me excited!
@SmaggTheSmug I can't speak for others. But I am always genuinely excited about the reveal of new Pokemon.
I will say I wasn't aware of the data mine and I am surprised about the Zeraora. Didn't know it was thing. I just googled it and it actually looks pretty cool. Its like a cross between Lucario and Electabuzz, with a bit of Galvantula thrown in
Well......technically this new Pokémon should be in Pokémon Switch right? Or is that not how this works?
My kids will be excited by a new Pokémon so when it is shown I can give them some fun news
It will be Pokemon Rumble mobile and ppl will port beg for a Switch version....
I may be a bit off on this, but I think the upcoming Pokemon Switch game (at the very least the first one coming) will be either a complete re-imagining of the Pokemon formula, or a remaster of Diamond and Pearl with added features and HD just to test out the ground for HD development before dedicating to a whole new generation.
I think no matter how often Pokemon designers can fart out new Pokemon, it's just really unlikely in my head that they would develop a whole new generation of Pokemon on a completely new engine and on their first HD system within 1.5 years. But hey, I could be completely wrong.
@Varkster Well, it's likely they've been prepping for this for far longer than 1.5 years. After all, we know they started prepping for HD game development at some point prior to 2011, a.k.a seven years ago. By 2012, all the HD models for Pokemon had been developed, but what Creatures Inc worked on for the five year span between that and Detective Pikachu is a mystery.
@link3710 I would hope you're right, however I really doubt they would come anywhere near re-using models from 2012.
These models would need a lot of re-work and polishing as well as a very huge load of animating (which takes a million years longer than crafting models). Not to mention that creating a HD game is a wholly different endeavor - you have to have these animations up to standard with other games alike. The Pokemon team have a very big amount of money and I really hope that they invest it into making this/these Switch games as it would be very wise. I'm still going to stay skeptical about the new generation of Pokemon until I see it (although honestly I'd be a lot more excited for a re-imagining of the world of Pokemon with already existing ones).
When I'm talking about animations take Ni no Kuni 2 for reference. The upcoming Switch release has to look a lot more like THAT rather than the simplistic style of animation found in the 3DS Pokemon games.
@Varkster luckily for them, the 2012 models were made to last. They were already HD quality from the very beginning.
You can bet they'll be milking them for as long as they possibly can.
@Varkster It might be why Sun and Moon (and in some respects the Ultra versions) were a bit underwhelming. Internally, they may had already moved on to the Switch and this generation (I even hate to suggest it) was a holdover. And I don't say that as someone who completely disliked the games. I enjoyed what was there. They were just lacking in a lot of areas.
@Varkster Well, take a look at what's been done on those models since then. XY introduced a bunch of new animations in the Pokemon Ami minigame. SM and USUM has added in further new animations, including basic walking animations, none of which were used in game. In addition, there was a leak some time ago (can't even remember where) that showed Bulbasaur with HD ready textures, and you can find images of the models rendered at HD in Citra anywhere. There's no reason these models wouldn't be good in HD, especially since they've likely had no less than six years to animate them all, and shown little other work compared to Monsters usual 1-2 games per year.
Game Freak shouldn't write the codes of the future-release pokemon in their games, instead should add them with updates. Now the surprise is dead
@Gerbwmu It's mentioned in the article that it's not for Pokemon Switch, it's for a Pokemon not yet released for the 3DS games.
@bagajr Well, it only says "much more likely". So to be clear, the writer of this article is making an educated guess. But in the end, doesn't know much more than anyone else. So it could possibly be an entirely new Pokemon. But I would imagine it is Zeraora. Though a Gen VIII reveal would be nice
Yeah, it's probably going to be Zeraora.
@UmbreonsPapa I've always said there was no chance of Pokemon Switch coming out this year because a late 2018 release would be only 2 full years after Sun/Moon, and there's always been at least 3 years between every generation. But your comment was the first thing that convinced me 2018 MIGHT still be possible. The final island in Sun/Moon and so many other things felt rushed, which makes me think you're right about them starting on Gen 8 for Switch early. I still highly doubt it though because XY and SM were both revealed long before April of their release year, and they've never saved the reveal for E3 before.
It's Zeraora. I'm not holding my breath for anything else - though I'll admit it would be nice.
Zeraoera? Is that an Electric-type evolution of Zoroark?
@SmaggTheSmug only recently got back into Pokémon, but genuinely interested to see what they can come up with when almost everything has already been done. When they start making a trash bag into a pokemon you know they're low on ideas.
I will only get excited if they reveal pokemon switch. Not interested anymore in the handheld version.
@bagajr I'd be stunned if it did
It's Zeraora, guys. Chill out
Most likely Zeraora which is fine but they won't be distributing it until much later this year.
@bagajr I don't disliking certain aspects meant that the game was a rushed job.
I’m still waiting for Eternal Flower Floette
@Desdar300 I never said I disliked the final island. I really enjoyed it, but it still seemed weirdly short compared to the other islands. Either way, I don't actually believe they pushed the game aside to work on Pokemon Switch, I was mostly just talking about it as a possible unlikely scenario.
@Fandabidozi : Ppft. I'm still waiting for ???-type Arceus.
Yeah little doubt it is Zeraora. That said, they could treat it like they did the Shiny Legendary dogs in 4th gen. An event release that you get it in the current game, and send it to the new game to unlock some kind of special event. In 4th gen we got the Shiny legendary beasts(which I still have) and when you transfered them to Black or White you got a special in-game event to unlock Zoroark.
Obviously Zeraora.
Aussie theme for gen 8.
You can bet i be looking at the internet 9th April to find out what exactly it is. And if it is only a new pokemon for 3ds then at least i have another pokemon to add to my collection (if its free). And my 3ds crew won't suck so hard at online battles.
@UmbreonsPapa Even if it is just Zeraora, I think I found evidence that Pokemon Switch is almost certainly coming out this year or spring next year.
If the movie coming out this year features Zeraora, which it almost certainly would, then it contains the last Pokemon of the Alola Pokedex.
The movie that contained the last Pokemon of the Unova Pokedex (Genesect) came out in the same year as X and Y. The movie that contained the last Pokemon of the Kalos Pokedex (volcanion) also came out in the same year as Sun and Moon. So it's likely that the movie containing the last Pokemon of the Alola Pokedex will release in the same year as Pokemon Switch (this year).
@Varkster You're gonna get your feelings hurt when you compare games and expecting the other one to follow suit. That Ni No Kuni comparison was odd and misplaced. Also its clear GF has been working on Pokemon switch for more than 1.5 years. They said themselves that the younger staff worked on US/UM while the senior staff worked on another project.
@Lthoise I never said the games should be alike or Pokemon should be like Ni no Kuni - I was moreso referring to the quality of the 3D and animation departments. The standards should be very high for this next Pokemon title, if they aren't — it will be a major disappointment let alone misstep.
Pokemon hitting the Ni No Kuni visual standard would be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath.
Wait, Thundercat ??
@Anti-Matter Yeah, it's the yellow cat everyone knew about since forever...
Called it.
