During last night's Japanese Nintendo Direct it was announced that Taiko: Drum Master - known as Taiko no Tatsujin in its homeland - is coming to the Nintendo Switch, complete with songs from Super Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2.
Two-player support is included thanks to the fact that instead of using a drum peripheral, you use the Joy-Con to drum - just like the recently-released Japanese exclusive Gal Metal. A range of wacky party games are also included.
The game launches this year in Japan. We'd love to see this released in the west, but the odds aren't great; the only title to be localised outside of Japan is the PlayStation 2 version, which launched in North America in 2004.

Yay !
I will be working out how to get my hands on this.
Although I hope you can use button inputs too.
Considering all the licensed music in these games, it isn't a surprise. But you can still download it from the Japanese eshop or import it from something like Play-Asia, since the Switch is not region locked.
This might be my first switch import!
The red and blue joy cons really suit the game too
Day 1. Have both 3DS games. Held back on PS4 because of switch version
I want this.
Finally I can play one of these games!!!
got a jap 3ds just to get the 3 taiko games and theatrythem dq, still need to get the ps4 one and was expecting this to be an inevitble announcement (also got all the psp and ds ones)
Getting it. It's nice to have some Nintendo music as well. I haven't played Taiko games before because I didn't really know about them before 3DS came out and I haven't gotten around to getting the DS games which are region free.
The Wii U versions were great. Pirates exclusive.
Finally some info on this! Absolutely worth an import.
I imported the PS4 bundle so I will get this, physical or not.
Awesome, but I'm a bit iffy about the motion controls. I'm not sure if they will be as precise as the actual taiko drum...
So this must be one of Bandai Namco's 3 exclusive titles... no surprise lol. Tales of... is the second, I wonder what the third will be?
Starting a Japanese account for this game and this game alone.
Sad that I didn't see any news about a tatacon, but this is a day one purchase. Getting digital. I play Taiko too much to have to switch carts. Doko Doko Don!
wait wait wait...I can put my taiko in front of me and play the game. ....ok I need them to make some plastic bachi add ons...
Yep, this will likely be the first game I buy from the Nihon eshop. Oh boi.
I'd import but I imagine it'll cost like $10-$20 more, so neh.
Hope it has the Gatchaman theme tune.
Tempted to import this. I made a Japanese eShop account a while ago but it turned the Switch news tab Japanese (even on my regular US Switch user profile). Not sure if I did something wrong but it was annoying so I deleted the JAP account.
can this be easily navigated without knowing Japanese?
Can you play this without the drum controller? This game could get me to create a Japanese account and download my first Japanese digital game
I played the arcade version with the massive drum controllers while I was in Japan on holidays and it's a lot of fun! Already considering the import!
@leo13 yeah you can use buttons or touch screen undocked
@link3710 not sure about that. Taiko was confirmed for Switch last year.
This was just first time they showed footage
@kobashi100 thanks. Hopefully it comes out soon
This is why I cried when Nintendo confirmed the Switch being region-free. Finally after all these years no need to buy a Japanese (Nintendo) system to play this god tier series.
Taiko is affordable again 😭❤️
Btw those Nintendo songs are worth it alone.
Reckon they will release a drum kit, or will it just be like Gal Metal and use joy-cons?
@GrailUK : They may do both. I recall past instalments being available as deluxe editions with drum peripherals, but they are available as standalone software as well.
These games have been some of my favorites for the 3ds and ds. I can't wait to get hold of this for the switch. I think this will be my first imported switch game.
@JoeDiddley buy it from a japanese game seller.
@YANDMAN thanks, yes that or buying points for the Japanese e Shop was what I was weighing up. I’ll probably go physical.
