Sonic Forces is out on 7th November, and plenty will be hoping that Sonic Team's release will bring us the second top-notch title for the mascot this year, following in the footsteps of Sonic Mania. For those eagerly jumping in on day one the wait is almost over.
To get people in the mood the official launch trailer has been unveiled, which goes big on drama and set pieces while also including a decent amount of gameplay among the cinematics.
As for our review, you've likely noticed that not many have popped up online as yet; in our case we'll bring that to you as soon as we possibly can.

I've come across 2 reviews, both Switch specific, neither positive. There was also the Famitsu review but then they're nearly always over generous and it wasn't specifically for Switch.

FYI- I picked up sonic Forces for Switch in toys r us on Saturday 11/4. The PS4 and Xbox versions were there too. Street date was broken I guess??
Edit: I didn’t crack it open yet so I’m not sure how it is but I generally don’t pay attention to any reviews regardless of that reviewers experience in the field, etc. A review is someone’s opinion and nothing more. I see a lot of negativity here but really, it all comes down to your own personal opinion. I can’t count over the years how many times a game or movie got a bad review/s and I ended up liking that game/movie!
I’m getting increasingly anxious to see the reviews for this, mostly for a good laugh. It’s fairly par for the course to see negative reviews for 3D Sonic games, but it’s particularly sad this time just two weeks after Mario Odyssey and its universal critical acclaim.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE What were the negatives?
Was already available in a local store last Friday. Didn‘t pick it up considering I had to make an already expensive purchase that day. Ugh, what a waste of money. Will look for it tomorrow, though, I don‘t have high hopes considering the lack of reviews the day before launch.
@Nintendoforlife I've updated the comment.
My kid should be getting his Switch copy tomorrow. I think ll wait at least a few weeks for them to patch it, nothing comes out anymore that doesn't need a patch. Well maybe a few Nintendo games, but not multiplats. Multplat on Switch is just begging for a frame rate fix or something down the line.
Looks better than Boom.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Huh seems like they took a complete 180 from what they did with generations and managed to make a trash game:
Ughhh please please pleaseeee don't be trash. I've been wanted a good 3D sonic game for so long.
Its gunna be trash isn't it?
I’ll buy it on day one, maybe even on PS4 for 60fps and Switch for portability, because I still like to throw Sega as many bones as I can. But I’m bracing myself for bitter, bitter disappointment.
It's incredible to me how no single idea Sonic Team introduces in the series ever seems like a winner.
I don't know what turns me off the most here: the out-of-place character creator or the ridiculous fourth-wall-breaking of Modern and Classic Sonic being separate characters within a video game.
@Rafke It has happened at that store rather often about a decade ago, hasn‘t happened in years. But never to that extent, afternoon or evening before the official launch date, yes, not several days in advance. Well, considering games usually release on Fridays, I can understand why they were a tad confused.
Mediocre or not, at least it'll still be better than Bubsy on the PS4. Recently bought that one this morning, then beat it twice 4 hours ago and now I'm returning that game to get my money back.
Sonic Mania was the winner for me. I have a feeling most Forces reviews will be along these lines. Though I could be wrong...

People seem to forget than Sonic Colors and Generations were actually really good games. So, it's not impossible for a 3D Sonic game to turn out well. It's just...not very common. I don't expect Forces to buck that trend, unfortunately.
I've never see the early stages of the Sonic Cycle so much in swing in the run up for this game, maybe cos people were lead to believe it'll be another Generations.
Well, over the next few days we'll see whether the right or wrong elements were picked up.
Although tbh I found Generations okay at best. Though I did stop playing due to a PC gamepad bug that saw Sonic suddenly vear left at a certain point in a stage.
All I know is these comments will be entertaining.
@AlternateButtons Same here. I always believe and consider NintendoLife and GX reviews than any other reviewer.
Even if this did get decent views, I doubt I'd get it. I spent waaaaay too much money this year, so this will most likely be a pickup much later down the road.
I can't wait til I get my copy. 👍
I might get this game at some point. Even if it's just for laughs. The game looks bad, but at least it doesn't look Sonic Boom or '06 bad...
Even with the lukewarm reviews, I'm really looking forward to playing this. I loved generations and if it can deliver at all on the tone and idea that they're building I'll happily take it.
The demo seemed pretty poor and I don't know what this magical day one update is that Sega seems to think will transform the game. I'm still holding out hope this could be good but I can't see it, can't they just make a 3D Sonic game where you just play as Sonic and build the game around That? Instead of 3 Sonics in modern, classic and black (day one dlc) and then this Avatar nonsense which just seems like a slightly slower version of Sonic
@AlternateButtons Just realized the reviewer for Polygon is Jeremy Parish, so let me just disagree vehemently that he has no 'journalistic integrity'. The man has been one of the best in the business for years.
@ricklongo Those who have actually read it know it's a good review.
I'm not getting my hopes up for this game. 3D Sonic just keeps getting worse.
Don't link to PushSquare unless it is explicitly stated as such. I still refuse to visit the site.
@Rafke hope you have Sonic Mania on your radar!
I preordered it for 2 reasons. The first was after that ending in Mania after obtaining all the chaos emeralds, i wanna see if that connects with Forces and the second was that Argos have it for 27 pounds which i thought was relatively cheap for a new release, so if it sucks, its not the end of the world. If it is terrible, then ill trade it in (which i very rarely do) and the use the credit on Doom. I'm not holding my breath, but i'll remain optimistic at this point.
@AlternateButtons Re-read that segment. It's criticizing the fact that time is the only criterion since it limits the number of ways you can approach a stage.
If you're going to bash a review, try to at least understand what it's saying first.
@AlternateButtons it sounds like it lacks the incentive to encourage replayability aside from speedrunning levels, no?
@AlternateButtons but it does mean it could be something to improve on.
@AlternateButtons You clearly didn't, since I already explained it to you. It limits your options while playing the stage. You want to get a high rank, you have to go fast. Exploration is discouraged, and that's reflected in the level design.
Clearly the reviewer thinks this formula is worse than what we've had and that Sonic games are at their best when they combine both exploration and speed, like the classic games did. This is not a difficult thing to grasp. You know that you disagreeing with that point doesn't invalidate the opinion of the reviewer, right?
@AlternateButtons and Sonic Adventure is a game made in 1998
@AlternateButtons because Odyssey improved on them.
@AlternateButtons The ranking in this game goes off of your score. The end-level time bonus is the largest contributor to that, but rings and defeated enemies matter too.
Don't understand how this discourages exploring. It's not like you're prevented from advancing if you don't get good enough grades. Just decide from the start if you're going for secrets (red rings) or a high score.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
So apparently the closest we were getting to an actual console Sonic Generations - compared to the, quote unquote, 3DS version - is garbage?
Dang it, Sega, just release a Switch port of Generations already!
@AlternateButtons Hey, I'm not the one going extremely defensive over an evident lack of incentive to replay levels.
Every time a new Sonic game comes out I get excited right until it ships.....and then I start to think "what have I done?"
@NEStalgia Yeah, me too. Except the excitement part. I just can‘t get excited for a Sonic game anymore and weirdly enough, I‘ll still pick it up day one, beat it in one or two days and have zero recollection about the entire experience the next day. It almost feels like playing the game on autopilot.
@Rafke You mean COLORS not Colours.
They should make another Shadow game.
@GC-161 I assume you're being sarcastic with the whole color thing
@Nintendoforlife Answer me this riddle... why would you write "Velociraptour" instead of the correct "Velociraptor"?
Things that make you go: Hmmmmmm
@GC-161 You know people speak English in England, right?
@Maxz I know that most on planet Earth speak American English.
But let's not get the vapors over it.... I mean, the vapours.
@GC-161 That... Doesn't make any sense.
And no. There is a significant amount of people on this planet, who speak British English. Just saying.
@G_M Not enough to buy more copies of Sonic Colours than Sonic Colors.
Just sayin'
@GoldenGamer88 Weird coincidence! I was humming King Dice’s song as I started reading down the comments. Then I got to yours!
Okay, I think I said this many times before, but I’ve always preferred Mario over Sonic. No getting around that. My feelings for Forces was always, “Hope for the best, brace for the worst.” Regardless of how Forces may turn out, though, I’m glad to have Mania.
Still going to pick this one up and judge for myself. Sadly the Sonic Fandom is so divided that any 3D Sonic game will annoy or be bad to a segment of them. Obviously reviewers will fall under one of these segments too so it will either be harsh or good. I think I read somewhere that Polygon previously gave Generations a low rating too so i’ll take what they said with a grain of salt.
I still think a 3D Sonic that actually takes what makes the 2D games good can work. We have yet to see this realised and I have no idea why Sonic Team have never tried. The boost formula is alright but I think they can do better.
Looks like trash.
The Drama hahaha xD
Looks kinda generic. Also “Speed, POWER, and WISDOM. Seems familiar but I just can’t place it...
I was thinking about getting this but I am overwhelmed with Odyssey, then probably Skyrim, and then Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Also sprinkle in ARMS, Splatoon 2, and BOTW.
@MagicEmperor Best song in the game lol. Did you know it‘s a woman singing that, Alana Bridgewater?
Already looks better than ARMS ever did.
@GoldenGamer88 Yeah! What a voice!
@waluigifan1 OMG shots fired lol.
