We're into the Fall / Autumn season, and you know what that means... the Holidays are coming. This scribe saw mince pies in a UK supermarket today, which means that Christmas is a short 3.5 months away.
Retailers are getting into the spirit, in any case, and North American retailer Target has taken the chance to lead into the Holiday Season with its 2017 Top Toys List. The Nintendo Switch made the cut, popping up in the Techy Toys section.
- Moonlite—Bedtime Story Projector for Your Phone, $24.99
- Star Wars Force Link BB-8™ Mega Playset, $199.99
- Meccano Erector M.A.X. Robotic Interactive Toy with Artificial Intelligence, $149.99
- Nintendo Switch™, $299.99
There's a hint of irony that the press release doesn't hyperlink the Switch, unlike most other products in the list, because it's not currently in stock on the retailer's website.
Nevertheless it's another reminder that retailers are seeing the Switch as a hot property right now, and are no doubt scrabbling for all the stock they can get ahead of the Black Friday / Holiday shopping sprees.
Here's hoping those trying to buy one for the festive season can get their hands on a unit.

hahaha
But, seriously, it's a gaming device, not a toy. Gamers are so stereotyped already...
EDIT: For those of you who say it's a toy, you're totally right, I just wanted to say something clever since I was early
Meh, I'll take it.
@OrigamiSquirtle Isn't a game console a toy by definition?
The Switch is a handheld toy and the competition consoles are toys as well. Are people so insecure?
@OrigamiSquirtle It is a toy. It just happens to be one that people of any age can play with without feeling stupid/juvenile.
Really, any object that can be used for pure entertainment is a toy, whether they're advanced pieces of technology or a plastic ball.
I can see the retailers now, "scrabbling" to get the Switch available for sale. Not sure how playing a board game will help, however.
Isnt it "scrambling"?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Hey, I don't play with toys. My office filled with Transformers and myself take offense at that notion.
@OrigamiSquirtle Game systems are toys. Nothing wrong with that.
It's a Nintendo Entertainment System! 🤓
Also another word for toy. My house is packed to the brim with objects that fit the description...
We have lots of adult toys at home besides the switch.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
A comment from you I wholeheartedly support. Nothing wrong with toys, adult aimed or otherwise.
Keep it in the minds of the populace anyway you can. The faster this device gets to 10 million sales and beyond the more vialble it becomes for 3rd party games and the more chances Nintendo will take with fringe software. That is something that benefits us all and I hope the next 3 months are crazy for sold Switches. 10 Million isn't unreasonable by the end of December, assuming they can manufacturer enough. Lets see the 3rd parties and their offerings fall of 2018.....I bet it is a far stronger and more diverse then this year.......which honestly feels like the best fall lineup for a Nintendo console in sometime.
I'm itching to see this year's console bundles. Not only for the Switch, but for the N3DS as well.
How would they know it's not a toy? It's not like they've ever seen one in stock!
I like toys
Good job for putting among kids toys a thing that,while it does have kid-appropriate characters,its also getting this guy:
And there's going to be more.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Hi.
I'm a young adult male 33 years old but have some Amiibos as toys when they are not being used.
@Anti-Matter that's great to know. Thank you for sharing
@OrigamiSquirtle It's a toy.
I don't consider a gaming console a toy any more than I'd consider a phone, tablet, or movie to be a toy. They have the capacity to entertain a child, but aren't exclusively made for that purpose.
Hellblade is on a toy. Old people learn to prevent dementia with toys. Soldiers learn to fly/shoot/sail on a toy. Astronauts prepare for deep-space missions on a toy.
Hmm, thIs suggests to me that there is stock building up and being held back for a certain Friday.
*We're all toys now
It's kind of surreal to be reading about Christmas lists when it's been 100 degrees (fahrenheit, just to clarify for the non-Americans) outside for the last month straight and the massive forest five miles away from where I live is burning to the ground as I type this comment. What I wouldn't give for it to be fall here right now.
Normally I would be mad that consoles are considered toys, but if thought is put into it, then they really are just toys. Toys for adults that is. Look at a child play a toy, then look at an adult holding an electrical device, yeah... No difference at all.
@Anti-Matter hey bud I'm 31 and love me some Nintendo just as much as you and quite a few of the rest on this site. Curious though at 33 how do you consider yourself a "young adult"? Perhaps in your country things are perceived differently? Maybe the young at heart approach? Not that it really matters just asking as I've seen you mention this in other articles.
"Great for the big kids among us, too"
As in millenials? I am beginning to suspect that all the millenials in the commercials are there to make it appealing to kids. After all, kids always looked up to older children. Supposedly children find 20 somethings to be very cool nowadays. I don't think many 20 somethings bought a Switch though (except the people on this site). Why would they? All the indies can be downloaded (and at cheaper prices) on pc, tablet, smartphone, PS4 and XboxOne!
Oh, and those millenial commercials with the cheesy rock-music are awful and actually worse then the Wii u commercials!
Good stuff. Keep the publicity momentum rolling.
Also, it's a toy. Games Consoles are toys. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
@ballistic90 Did you know that "Scrabble," the game, was named after the word "scrabble," which is part of the English language? It means reaching around frantically for something. For example, if you slip and end up dangling from the edge of a cliff, you might scrabble for a foothold or something like that.
@Anti-Matter
Someone who's 20 might be a young adult. At 32 that ship has sailed and been nuked from orbit. 😉
