When the Nintendo Switch launched there was understandable relief at its positive reception, with plenty of hype ensuring that demand outstripped supply. Though Nintendo has frequently made noises about ramping up production it's taking some time, and there still aren't enough systems to go around.
A case in point is the Japanese market. Though the weekly chart results consistently show the Switch holding steady at the top of the hardware results with decent numbers of a little under 30,000 units, it could evidently do a lot better. Kotaku has posted another summary of the popularity of the system that highlights this. Typically stores are getting 200-300 units in at a time, and then 2000+ people often queue to enter a raffle to claim a system. It's an interesting part of shopping culture in the country that people queue for hours for a mere chance to buy the hardware.
Add in conditions that are often humid, and the lines are apparently referred to often as “jigoku” (地獄) or “hell” in social media.

This is all before the launch of Splatoon 2, of course. Hopefully Nintendo has a bumper stock of hardware on the way for that one, as it's an IP that's become hugely popular in Japan.
Though unfortunate for the shoppers involved, this is a reminder that demand for Switch remains high; that's also the case in various other countries. That's a good sign for Nintendo.
With thanks to all that sent this in.

Paging @Mahe
Besides the initial preorders my local Walmart has only gotten one switch in stock and it sold in a matter of seconds once it was put out. They are not meeting demand at all by any stretch of the imagination.
Well... what is this going to look like after Splatoon 2?
@JamesR Ink everywhere.
Gotta be thankful of Japanese shopping etiquette. If it was like Black Friday it would have been like a warzone.
I can only hope Nintendo has stocked up enough Splatoon 2 bundles for Friday.
We desperately need more switches.
I wonder how they plan to manage the launch of Splatoon 2, which has 910 pts on comgnet.com atm. This is 1000 copies per point generally, talk about 1.000.000 in the first week. Good luck Nintendo
Hopefully Nintendo is stockpiling the Splatoon 2 bundle version and that's why the standard version is only trickling out.
I really don't understand why they have these silly queues and raffles though. Why not have a sensible pre-order system?
@chardir This method prevents scalpers
Reminds me of the heydays of the Wii and the DS Lite.
@chardir What? A pre-order system is stupid, as it'll just end up with a ton of scalpers swiping the units. This way everybody just comes to the shop and has a fair chance whether they're number 1 or number 3.000 in the queue. It is great.
@Blizzia Is it fair if someone can turn up once and get one while another person turns up on 10 different days and gets nothing?
@FX102A Agree about the Japanese attitude, I was there for the first time last month and it was a culture shock to how organised everything is.
A friend of mine got a queue jump for a PS4 on launch and he was verbally abused while walking past the queue.
Ashamed to be a westerner sometimes.
One thing I have never understood is can't they just take stock from other parts of the world and just update the systems for the Japanese market? I'm sure there's a good reason not to and hopefully someone can tell me cause I'm sure we in the UK will have excess stock.
@Great_Gonzalez The UK doesn't have excess stock - most shops are sold out.
Nintendo, the Switch is not the Wii U, you clearly have the cash to meet demand.
Not where I live I could walk into pretty much any store that sticks it and buy it
@FX102A Haha yeah, they think the polite queuing is hell. Wait till someone with no shoes snatches it out of your hands and runs into the sea of baying beasts of the Black Friday shopocalypse!
@Mahe Where are you now, kid? Nintendoomed, what?
so thankful I pre ordered and got on day one, have not seen a single one in any shops near me since launch
Plenty available in Australia.
Good old Japan reminding us that their world and ours are entirely different. I've never had to cue for anything in my life. Except maybe for ice cream. Like... I mean for more than ten minutes or so. But they're all doing it for several hours per day just for a chance? Gotta say, they're dedicated. Maybe this is why Japan get all the good games first.
@chardir Yes. Definitely. Because that means that the scalpers who turn up all 10 times are much less likely to swipe the units. So it is a great way to go about it in my opinion.
White Nintendo Switch bundle, please.
Pretty please, Nintendo.
There were a bunch of Black Nintendo Switch.
Only need at least White color to make it Balance.
Yin (Black) & Yang (White)
Just look at Switch logo.
Looks like Yin & Yang.
How many people total in Japan?
If only there was this level of demand in the West. Switches are everywhere in Florida any more, if anyone wants one.
Got a few friends selling theirs too hmu
I always get surprised when I see Japan's culture regarding waiting and lines. In the west waiting like that would be a disaster.
I just spent over 500 dollars just to get an available switch bundle. Everything else was out of stock.
I just came back from a 2 week vacation on Spain and every time I went into a GAME or Fnac or Corte Ingles store there were people asking for Switches. I went there in 2015 and it was all about the PS4, so there's definitely a big turnaround in Nintendo's marketing with the Switch.
@Luna_110
Discipline Mentality.
Most Japanese people have mentality like that.
I can't wait to get my Switch. This is the first time since the SNES I've not bought a Nintendo console at launch so is a weird experience for me not knowing what people are talking about.
My hype is growing though and I like the idea of there being a bigger library of games to choose from when I do get one... Mario and Zelda on the same day! Woot woot!
@Great_Gonzalez Oh yeah? Then a lot of people would be thankful if you revealed this magical place full of Switches? It seems here that not only is it practically always sold out but also any new stock is snapped up in minutes!
One Japanese retailer expects Splatoon 2 to sell 850,000-900,000 copies at launch in Japan alone, so Nintendo better prepare for even larger hordes of people lining up to buy Switches when that game releases.
@gatorboi352
You probably won't ever see lines like this in the west because Nintendo has stocked more Switches in the west due to the wests' higher demand for games like Zelda, Mario Kart, and Arms, hence why the Switch sells a lot more in the US and in Europe than in Japan.
My local Gamestop just got in five units yesterday. A former coworker of mine works there on weekends now, and I'm curious to see how long those units last.
@gatorboi352 Don't try and pretend there is healthy stock in the U.S. No-one will believe you, anyway. Everyone knows the shortages are just as bad in the U.S!
It's absolutely crazy in Japan.
And here too, it's catching on like wildfire.
I have more co-workers with a Switch now than any other console... And it's only been 4 months. Everyone who sees it wants one. Some right away, some who say "soon as Pokemon releases" or "soon as Mario releases". But everyone wants it.
And they should. It's freaking awesome. Just imagine once stock is readily available and anyone can impulse buy on the spot...
I'm so lucky. on launch day, walked into Best Buy and picked up a switch without pre ordering , also got Zelda at the same time.
I have all 3 Switches now that I needed. One on launch and the other 2 I needed I hunted them down at a Walmart and saw 2 in a case at a Target. I'm good
This makes me happy I got mine in Amazon's recent Prime "sale". I wasn't going to, I only did it to secure mine ahead of time; I can only imagine how it'll be when SM Odyssey is released.
Actually pretty ok in my country atm, it was impossible to get after initial launch day, but now there's actually Switch in stock here and there in alot of stores and online. It's at least not SOLD OUT everyehwhere like it was during launch. Things like accesories are a different story, kinda hard to get controllers etc.
Is still DOOM.
I've been in Canada for three months or so (pity me, albeit their currency scraping bottom has been great for this American), and I've actually seen a half-dozen Switch' in the wild...that last about as long as they do when showing up on American shelves, despite the fact the things cost $400CAD.
@Jessica286 Beat me to it! Dooooooomed!
@WiltonRoots LOL! Is better to say it before comments of that topic start filling the feed.
I would have already bought a second Switch for my wife if I could walk into a store and get one. From amiibo to the NES Classic Edition and now the Switch, Nintendo keeps proving they have zero idea how to efficiently manufacture a popular product. It's sad. Nintendo itself is the greatest impediment to their own success.
@westman98 coolstorybro.jpg
@WiltonRoots ironically, Nintendo is their own detriment.
@Chibi so I'm going to go to the walmart, target and best buy in my town. Post photos of Switch stock here, and you will never reply due to being completely owned.
@gatorboi352 🖒
Guys, my local store has plenty of Switches in stock, and since my anecdotal experience are 100% representative of reality, there is clearly no demand for the Switch outside of Japan.
Nintendooooomed (outside of Japan)...
@gatorboi352 Yep nice pictures! Looks like it's not me that's owned!
@AlphaJaguar You can't produce an unlimited amount of something just because you have cash.
One of many examples: You can't produce more Switches if you can't get your hands on enough LCD screens.
That might very well be the problem btw, since they are in high demand in recent years (smartphones, tablets...)
I wonder if this only applies to Tokyo and the other big cities down south... as far as I can tell it's not impossible to get a Switch in the frozen wastelands of the north where I live, and I even know at least one person who owns two of the things. I haven't yet tried buying one myself, though, so I guess I'll find out sooner or later.
@Kirgo You're being way too sympathetic to arguably the most powerful gaming conglomerate in Japan. They've got a bunch of business partners they can collaborate with. They can even pay a premium for parts if they want to and still retain a profit.
@AlphaJaguar That does not matter if the other companies involved are even bigger.
Display are needed by companies like Samsung and Apple. Nintendo can't simply pay premium prices to compete with that.
Besides even if they really would pay more for the parts, that would lose money on the console. As a company they would of course want to avoid that, just like any other company as well.
In the end, the factories can only produce so much and it is not like Nintendo is the only company with that kind of Problem.
Still waiting for those photos, lol. Have you literally been driving about all night looking for a store with plentiful supply of Switch? It certainly looks that way!
@thesilverbrick they sure do have a track record for that
@Chibi no pics?
@WiltonRoots Yep I was waiting for pics of the (supposedly) bountiful suppl of Switches in Florida. I guess we can all see how much sense Gator talks now!
