Earlier today Capcom TV's latest livestream was focused on Monster Hunter, and as it popped up on this scribe's YouTube feed we set up a random live blog to watch the promised gameplay of Monster Hunter XX on Nintendo Switch. Eventually there was some fresh gameplay, which looked rather tasty considering this is a game that supports cross-play with the 3DS version.
The video below starts off with the previously seen reveal trailer (at the 2 hours 11 minutes mark, if the video doesn't auto-play for you), we then get some off-screen footage from the portable and desktop Switch configurations, and after some messing about we get some direct feed of the docked game. Unfortunately even the uploaded version of the broadcast is limited to 720p and has some dips in image quality, so this doesn't show the game at its absolute best.
In any case, check it out below.
Are you hoping to see this localised to the West? Are you planning to just buy it from the Japanese Switch eShop if it isn't? Let us know in the comments.

They actually made some visual changes to the Misty Peaks, so that's something.
Not a great effort with the visuals but it still should be a lot of fun and won't stop it being a million seller. It's actually one of the few games announced so far for Switch that I'd like to play.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE yeah, but it is a port from the 3ds. Hopefully, in the future, we'll get a fully fledged MH game utilizing the Switches potential.
Looks good to me.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Because you can't find a Switch anywhere.......... And when you do you'll want your save data. Furthermore not everyone wants to take the Switch out of the house, so playing on your 3ds isn't as uncommon as you think.
After the article that's placed right next to this one?
No thanks.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Concerning those visuals: any useful verdict is WAY too soon to tell.
First off, it wasn't all that clear to see in this decidedly sub-par stream, with both frame rates and resolutions going all over the place all the time (even popping in and out of lower resolutions when displaying still images) and of course, YouTube streams and videos are always compressed, so by default, you'll always have quality loss, so none of what you've seen is representative of how it'll look in real life.
Second, and more importantly, Famitsu has reported that, according to their own sources at Capcom, the current state of development of the game is still only at 75%, so that still leaves a LOT of room for tweaking and improvement until the final release, which will release in Japan on the 25th of August.
So, what we've been watching in this video here, is not even the final build, but simply a work in progress.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Again I believe not wanting to take the Switch out, as well as the Switch taking up considerably more space when you take it out are two legitimate reasons. Personally I'm not really fazed by either, but I can see why others might be.
Game looks considerably better than MH3U did on Wii U. Which was previously the best option for hunters in the west, visually. This one has definitely improved on it. Probably a combination of the source material being a 2016-2017 release vs 2011, and the fact they've simply put more effort in this vs MH3U (which kept a lot of low res textures and had horrible geometry in some places, like backgrounds).
I'm stoked!
@AlexSora89
If you're mad about MegaMan (as I am) then let them know along with the 1,000 other people on their Twitter that you refuse to buy it on any system but Switch, and that if they want your money they know where to find you:
https://mobile.twitter.com/Capcom_Unity
But don't go take it out on the Monster Hunter team who has been nothing but good to Nintendo fans, and is doing right by bringing the franchise to Switch. Getting upset over not having a game... the solution isn't to deprive yourself of even more games. Game deprivation is what got you mad in the first place, no? It solves nothing, and the only thing it will accomplish is serve to ensure even more games stay out of your reach in the future.
Day one import with and English option or day one buy in the west. I won't reward CAPCOM with an Import sale if I can't read it.
It naturally looks like a 3DS game but with better resolution. I didn't expect anything else when cross play was confirmed.
I would have MUCH preferred a MH4U version, but whatever. MH for Switch, I'm there.
sigh ....I'll most likely buy it to scratch my hunting itch, but I really hope the Switch gets MH5.
I'm hoping they upped the difficulty level from X (Generations here in the West). That was the easiest MH game I've ever played. Fun, but still not that hard compared to 3U and 4U, imo.
Only Japanese PR gets so excited with PS2 quality models in HD.
I mean, it doesn't look bad, but it's the 3DS version up-scaled.
Waiting it comes to Canada.
I really want a WEST version. Stop with this damn japanese only market.
@Nintendoforlife - Multiplayer community is the main reason I can see people swapping back and forth. If you have a group of friends with only one system you may only play on that. It sounds like local wireless is going to be separate without crossplay (online will) so I can see people swapping to play with different people.
@bezerker99 to be fair the other two you listed have G rank, the G versions are naturally meant to be a bit higher. I'd guess XX is harder than Gen... though still may be easier than 3U and 4U due to Hunter styles, arts, etc... it was made to be more accessible. My guess will be 5 will try to do a better job of keeping LR very accessible but HR legitimately challenging.
Please let a US localization be announce E3 though, I need this!
@bezerker99 Generations doesn't have G-Rank, this is the expansion/G version of Generations. So yeah, I've seen Gajin's video on the final boss and even with fully upgraded armor she hits pretty hard.
@bezerker99 only played Tri. How would you compare with it?
I may as well be watching footage from Tri
@Joeynator3000 - oh cool! we finally will get G-Rank then, had no clue
@Desy64 - Tri was my first Monster Hunter experience. I loved that game at the time but it feels very archaic now after having played MH3U, 4U, and Gens. Capcom really has tweaked the Monster Hunter formula A LOT since Tri and the series has, imo, definitely benefited from it. You can still get these latter (and much improved over Tri) versions on sale now ....but the sale ends today (June 5th). MH4U still tends to be my favorite and it's on sale for just 12 bucks! Wish I had gotten it for that price. A steal, imo.
Rawr~
@bezerker99 Yeah Capcom usually does this all the time, the first game always goes up to high rank, in the past they'd release a "portable" game that's also only high rank, and then release a G version at the very end. 4th Gen has been kinda weird with this, releasing 4G/U right after MH4 instead of doing the Gen games first. 4U would've been even better if it came after Generations/XX...lol
Looks fun. I hope Capcom will release more games for the Switch.
@JaxonH
In all honesty, I'm kind of disillusioned about petition and web-based fan demand. The only kind of demand, outside of Kickstarted, that actually accomplished something was Operation Rainfall (and, to some extent, Operation Moonfall, but the Majora's Mask remake was admittedly kind of a given).
@AlexSora89
Ya, I don't mess with any of that. But Twitter is where it's at nowadays. Times have changed, and pretty much all developers (like Capcom) tell fans to voice their demand on Twitter. They said as much with Disney Collection when fans were asking about a Switch version.
It's an instant bell weather for interest. They know only 1 out of 1000 consumers (for example) will actually speak out. So if thousands of people are complaining on Twitter, they know there's real interest.
Twitter has a real impact, and only takes a second to drop a tweet as a reply, "Hey, where's the Switch version?"... done.
@ShadJV Arts and Styles were done to shake things up for a spin-off game-- but they're likely to stick around, judging from near-unanimous positive reactions from fans and critics that the devs have explicitly noted.
@crackafreeze I hope you already have a Switch console and just need the MHXXS game, because it is impossible to find a console in Japan! I was there several weeks ago and it was sold out everywhere I looked. (I even went to three cities: Tokyo, Kyoto, Hakata)
It looks semi-worse than 3U or equivalent.
Hard to say.
My question, is how many load screens are there compared to 3U?
Amazing what a switch in resolution and a bump in texture quality can do for a game's graphics.
Its great that this exists but its not a great port at all. I understand that its kinda limited it what can be achieved based off of the source code but it still doesnt look very sharp at all and is a little disappointing. The good thing is this will hopefully open the gates for a completely new game on Switch.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Because: business sense. Millions and millions of MH fans who own a 3DS can buy, then upgrade later when they get a Switch. Also, this is healthier for the multiplayer community instead of fragmenting it. Also, some people may just want to play on 3DS? There are times when it's appropriate to slip a 3DS into your back pocket rather than chuck your Switch into your backpack. I'll be getting copies for both platforms, and, on the topic of aesthetics, I love the 3DS' 'retro' graphics, and 3D.
@JaxonH
I'll try to get more vocal whenever my passion decides to burn once more.
@crackafreeze good for you! I also preordered and got mine day one. I wanted a second for my younger brother, but unfortunately there weren't any in Japan. :/ I'll probably settle for a non-tax-free Switch haha.
