Nintendo has released a new prologue for the Squid Sisters Stories. The Squid Sisters Stories is an online publication, featuring "top-secret intel" on Callie and Marie, created to help promote Splatoon 2.
The introduction goes a little something like this:
One of our researchers monitoring the Squid Sisters intercepted this top-secret report from the Inkling world.
Let's see now... What? What in the world IS this?!
The new prologue continues:
About nine months have passed since the final Splatfest.
Twilight lowers its curtain on Inkopolis. Neon signs paint the dusk in brilliant shades of green and pink. The Squid Sisters dance on, as though driven by the Inkling love of battling for turf.
Memories such as these linger, vividly etched in my mind, but feel too like remnants of a long-forgotten past.
It happened the night the final Splatfest came to an end.
The showdown of Callie versus Marie ended in victory for Marie, but there was no ill will between the two. The girls left the studio arm in arm, smiling and laughing as they always had. The bond between them would continue, unbroken, for years to come.
Or so it seemed at the time...
It appears that there may be some conflict between Callie and Marie going into Splatoon 2, having begun after the final Splatoon Splatfest. While we have seen some Squid Sister action appear in Splatoon 2 videos, it is still unclear as to what events have happened between Splatoon and Splatoon 2. We'll be looking out for new entries of Squid Sister Stories, which we hope will shed some light into the current relationship and events surrounding the eponymous Squid Sisters, Callie and Marie.
Let us know your thoughts on this new Squid Sister development and perhaps even who you would side with if there is conflict between Callie and Marie.

But they are cousins. How can there be a sibling rivalry? Also #TeamCallie
#TeamCallie isn't bitter, we splatted as best we could
@Gaga64 Let it continue well into Splatoon 2
#TeamMarie ftw
Wow, pretty meta to actually factor in the Splatfest into the sequel's plot.
Wow, well I hope all of you Team Marie players feel proud of yourselves for what you have caused in Splatoon 2
Got to say that this an interesting twist. Never expected that the last splatvast would be part of the story. Still team marie for the win^^
A conflict between the Squid Sisters?
I don't like that one bit... This was highly unnecessary...
Oh, Kalimari...
I mean Callie and Marie...
Nice to see Spaltoon 2 is keeping up with the crazy!
Splatfest outcome would be a really petty reason to split.
...ugh. Do I need to stop following celebrity news in the inkling world too?
reads like the opening for some really twisted fanfic. the only way to avert the video rendition would be to return splatfests permanently.
They are cousins not sisters.
Oh boiiiii
This is starting to get interesting.
Love the way they're going for continuity. Makes us feel like we genuinely were part of the story. Part of me thinks one has gone to the Octarian side. Either way, looking forward to experiencing it first hand in Splatoon 2. Splatoon 1 was very fulfilling for me and it can only get better from here.
Huh, so the final Splatfest does play a little bit into the story, although I'm sure the differences would be minor if Callie won instead, it's actually pretty neat the player's decisions had an impact on the story
@RupeeClock I only started playing Splatoon several weeks ago. Could you give me a quick briefing on what these Splatfests are?
@JubilifeRival Splatfests were online competitions hosted periodically when Splatoon was actively supported.
You would pick a side, and then take part in turf war matches and try to win matches in the name of your team's side.
The theme of each Splatfest was different and usually differed by region. There were simple ones like Cats vs Dogs, Hamburgers vs Pizzas, Fancy Dress vs Costumed Parties, Ninjas vs Barbarians, but also special ones like Transformers Autobots vs Decepticons, Spongebob Squarepants vs Patrick the Starfish, and the grande finale was Calle vs Marie.
If you were on the winning splatfest team, you'd be awarded a bulk of Super Sea Snails. These let you add ability slots to your gear, or shuffle the ability slots on your fully slotted gear. Normally to do that it would cost you a lot of coins.
Now that Splatoon no longer hosts Splat Fests, the Wii U game still has online matches, but has doubled the coins earned from normal play to compensate.
Really neat how they're bringing Splatfests (and their results) into the more official lore of the game! ..although I do hope this doesn't mean the end of Splatfests altogether, even for Splatoon 2. Wonder how this will turn out. The game can't come here soon enough!
@JubilifeRival basically, there would be a goal like
"which is better, hotdogs or hamburgers? "
You'd pick which you like by wearing a shirt representing your choice, then you'd fight other players like normal. Every point you made on someone who chose something else would be tallied and then the winning team would be announced. They would get a reward and that's it.
Lasted over the weekend and they had a bunch, with the last being personal, picking which of the two ladies were the best.
Can't wait for this!
I do miss splatfests, they were great.
Rivalry? They sound like ordinary siblings to me.
I literally can't even.
Team Callie here! I still feel we were robbed in the last Splatfest! I'm not mad though I got to splat a lot of Marie fanboys.
@ScorpionMG: When it mattered most, team Marie pulled through!
...Marie killed Callie!
No! You can't break up the sisters! They have to be there for each other always! ...Oh did I say that outloud? Um, I mean is...what an interesting plot point.
Eh. It's about time Callie moved on to better things and stopped hanging around that opaque-white colored hair wearing harlot. Team Callie may have lost but maybe we didn't afterall. ;3 Callie going in for dat solo-record.
Can't wait to find out what happened between them. #TeamCallie
I'm still sour that I missed that last ******* splatfest.
Go*damnit.
You monsters on team Marie thought you had won, but really we all lost.
Long live the Marie Empire.
Splatoon 2 is a sequel. End of debate.
Narrowly chose Team Marie, then near the end of the fest regretted my decision after remembering Callie's Team Pirate rep line. Not a sweet victory. Also turned out to be a boring finale...nobody aimed for the funny bone.
Man, wouldn't it have been a funny twist if the Spongebob vs Patrick Splatfest was the one that divided everyone in Splatoon. Now, that's the sequel we all want.
@masterLEON No, Splatoon 2 is a SEAquel.
@BraveSonic I'm not SHORE that pun was strong enough.
