In last night's Nintendo Direct it was revealed that Ubisoft would be bringing the classic board game Monopoly to Nintendo Switch, it will go on sale in Autumn/Fall.
You can of course play at home on the TV screen or on-the-go in tabletop mode. The game makes good use of the Joy-Con capabilities and players can feel the roll of the dice with the HD Rumble feature and play with up to six players online or offline.
Ubisoft also say this version has "new rules", and that "As they progress, players can also win rewards, unlock new exclusive content and watch the city prosper in front of their eyes".
Will you be picking this up ahead of the holiday season to play with friends and family?

"Will you be picking this up ahead of the holiday season to play with friends and family?"
No.
Sounds interesting, but it will depend on the price.
Sounds like a gamble.
Depends if its sold at the same silly prices they're wanting for Just Dance..... if that's the case then no chance
However if its around £20 or less I may consider it
In times like these, I'm so glad I switched my choice to PS4 Pro
I can't see myself playing Monopoly with any kind of enthusiasm in my life anymore, but I have to admit, the board looked kinda fun with a lot of detail on the side.
I prefer tangible boardgames. So this is a pass for me.
"HD Rumble dice rolling! The future of gaming technology!"
Considering the Switch's portable nature, I am considering it. Will have to buy another pair of Joycons (was already considering for MK8). Since I travel home for holidays and such, the Switch is perfect for this; although the deciding factor will be price. No more than £20 preferably.
Gaming isn't just for the traditional hardcore crowd!
Interesting that they lay the console flat in the video. Considering that the air intakes would be blocked, I wonder how the console keeps cool.
I remember my mate telling me he enjoyed the Xbox One version but that was from EA not Ubisoft.I will be interested in this if the online mode works fine. The online mode was one of the complaints with the EA version,if the host quit the match because they're losing or whatever then it's over for everyone.Hopefully that wont be the case in this one.
Edit: The Xbox One version is by Ubisoft as well,I was wrong. It's the Android version is by EA.Hopefully Ubisoft will fix the many issues their version has for Switch.
I absolutely love Monopoly & would definitely consider this should I ever be able to afford a Switch. While it would be cheaper to get a board & play at home... taking Monopoly down the pub? Getting people interested enough to play & then making them sit through setting a game up? A quick & easy to play videogame version is so much easier. Plus the boards are nearly as much as a Steam game now anyway.
Definitely has me on "board" hohohohohohoohoo!!
Actually this could be fantastic for travelling, all jokes aside. No chance of losing any tiny pieces down the side of the caravan cooker.
@FX102A I imagine it will be possible to share the Joy-con with a game like this as it's turn based. You only need a single Joy-con to play too so having 2 already, sharing controllers will be easy.
@H_Hunter
Is that so you could already play this gem as it's already released on that system???? Or maybe you switched to the wrong website!
So they put the hd rumble to good use....
Well, it's "only" Monopoly, and I've never been much of a fan of this game (I've always felt that it brought out the worst in people, if you know what I mean...), but from what could be seen in the Direct this iteration appears to be visually appealing at least, with much going on on the screen and reall looking nice. I'm not certain if that will be enough to sway me though... May also depend on the pricing.
@AlexOlney Its all fun and games until you lose your joycon instead.
The PS4 version from UbiSoft was the very first game i ever returned, because it was so darn buggy, it was impossible to play.
And WHEN it ran, the AI was simply flat out cheating.
I love the idea of having this on the go. Its brilliant for train rides with friends or a BBQ. Its just that this dev ripped me off with this game once already.
Maybe reviews and user reports will change that, but this couldn't be farther away from a day one / impulse purchase.
Is anyone interested in checking out the official Arabic language trailer for this game?
This is something i really like to play with friends, now also some simple pool games, chess games etc. In one collection.
@dew12333 Funny,I remember the same guy said something similar about the game 'Troll and I' when he footage of the game was from the PS4 version.
@Emperor-Palpsy I asked myself the same question. Maybe in portable mode this game is not so demanding on the system and there is enough cooling in this position.
Otherwise, maybe Ubisoft just don't know how to use the Switch...
I'm in!
As long as the dog's available
@H_Hunter How does Monopoly look in 4K? As good as the real board game?
@AlexOlney I thought someone stealing a $100 note from the bank was bad enough... sticking a joycon down their trousers is a bit too much!! Definitely a must-have title for me. Though will it have the Free Parking rule? Some of us can't play without it!!
At least the hd rumble gets its use here
I would but only at around £20 or less
We had some nice games revealed in the direct for serious gamers, and this is probably no exception if you have a family, so I'm glad they're adding it. I miss the brutally unfair AI in the old ones...it was hilarious to watch. Thimble, Wheelbarrow, Iron, and Dog...in that order for me. Been a long time wow. I'm guessing here, but it looks like a full retail priced effort. Ppl may not be too happy about that.
Also, I'm reminded of the "Othello" guy again, since this is a board game. That dude trolled for a week and was actually pretty funny. He did NOT like the portable powerhouse/hybrid Nintendo Switch lmao.
This is a maybe for me. Can't be certain for sure. If it's cheap, I may definitely get it.
Day one purchase!
It'll depend on the price. I do enjoy Monopoly, and this is easier than dragging a monopoly board along on a family trip in case of a rainy day. My wife isn't into video games, but this is something she would play with me and the kids...
I'd buy this over ARMS, but that isn't saying much. I'd buy almost anything over ARMS. I'd buy WiiU games over ARMS (if the WiiU had anything worth owning that I don't already have)
Hm...
if enough people end up owning a switch then this is a good idea in principle. Take your switch on holiday with the family or camping instead of the actual board game. It would make more sense to release a pack of several games, as I am sure this will end up being massively over priced to negate any bonus achieved by having 1 digital board game.
I'm a big fan of Monopoly I have over 52 boards! So I'm going to be picking this up no matter what (Well it depends on the price of course) But i'm a little upset that the "if you lose you have to pack it away" rule will not be in this Game...
@RioHughes wow, nice. I love the game as well(3 boards). You can always make that person do the dishes i guess...
No thanks, Mario Kart will be all i need to start fights in my family.
It was decent on PS4, started out pretty bad but it played nice with some patches. I could see myself getting it for Switch when I get one later this year just for fun of it being there.
I want to get this, a digital format for Monopoly would be much more hassle-free.
If it doesn't drain the battery maybe but generally monopoly last longer than 2 hours.
Well I play games, so yeah I'm pretty excited about this actually. If this has an online multiplayer mode I know for a fact my mother will buy a Switch (she likes mario kart too but not enough to buy her own system) and I might be able to pitch this to a buddy and his wife as a family system that they won't mind paying for. I think the HD rumble feature is really cool for this game as well.
I will say that between monopoly and mario kart the Switch is now the relationship breaker system. This is bound to start fights.
I love Monopoly
Only if I can custom name and price my lots, That all I ever wanted from the Monopoly game, to make up and use my own names and or throw new or almost random numbers on the board and see how things play out.
I love Monopoly! I was very excited to see this yesterday in the Direct. This will be a definite purchase for me.
@Antray1984 I think that's where I am at on this - I would probably buy a bundle of digital board games, but I just don't see me picking this up. I like Monopoly, but I don't love it. Even at $5, I'd probably give it a pass. But if it were bundled with 10 other popular board games, that's a different story, and I'd be willing to pay more.
I love monopoly too but strictly the board game. It's a good excuse to switch off screens with the family and sit round the table. So I'll pass on the cramped looking video game version.
This is so brilliant. The Switch is the perfect platform for games like this. No more carrying around physical board games with many small, easily edible, swallowable, ingestible, digestible, poopable pieces. Thank God Nintendo have nothing to do with this, as they'd probably defeat the purpose by producing a Monopoly series of amiibo. =P
Now if only other board games (and possibly games based on TV game shows) will follow suit…
Just imagine Connect Four where you can drop pieces by hovering the Joy-Con over the Switch in tabletop mode… ah, so many possibilities.
@HopeNForever : Wow! I had no idea that Arabic-language games were available on Nintendo devices. The more you know… heh.
I think this game actually has a fair chance, of course it's more aimed at the casual crowd but it does look kinda fun
Easily a must have for me. I've always wanted to play a version of Monopoly where I can actually feel the roll of the dice.
Well, Monopoly is Monopoly and some like it some don't. I want it to be great and to succeed so Switch can get the same attention that mobile is getting with board game and card game ports. It's pretty huge and there are, in my opinion, many much better games out there to go digital on Switch.
Carcassonne would be a nice start, but there are so many more...
@sillygostly
Poopable pieces of Monopoly ? LOL LOL XD
Monopoly Switch is best for Solo player while Real Monopoly require at least 2 players to play. Kinda lame to play Real Monopoly alone, without partner.
@Anti-Matter : I'm only excited about multiplayer. There's no way I would buy a board game for solo play. Monopoly Switch supports up to six players.
Anyway, so far from my experience, I have NEVER saw any Snake & Ladder games with RPG infusion (Dokapon Kingdom is much like RPG Monopoly rather than Snake & Ladder).
Believe me, I actually have some nice ideas about RPG Snake & Ladder. I had write down all the Abilities that can be used during the game. This is my little secret.... my RPG Snake & Ladder use SP (Step Point) from numbers of Dice that you got for moving. By collecting some SP, you can use some abilities to support yourself (Dice x 2, SP Booster, Four Dice, Barrier, etc) or strike your opponent ( Slow, Stop, Reverse, Drain, Seal, etc) or All players including caster ( Ladder OFF, Snake Plus, Floor Prime Number Stop, etc).
This game will earn a lot of jeers from the regular crowd, but I'll admit I could totally see myself playing this with my wife and kids if it's well executed
3rd party game uses rumble feature for a board game dice roll. Funnily I cant say Im totally excited. But after ps4 version of any ubisoft board game & the amazing cheating going on Ill pass.
So far it seems boring to me. Maybe if its really cheap like 10.
@AlexOlney you're on fire today!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I'm positive on Switch and you're fairly infamous for being negative on Switch, but I've got to admit, I had that same thought when they revealed that
Seems like a good opportunity to have some of the licensed ones as separate, playable boards. I'd love to see Zelda, Mario, Donkey Kong, Star Fox boards and action pieces in one of the video game versions, now is the time.
Oh, Ubisoft. Just...why. Of all the things they could spend development resources on, they support Switch with a board game and a WiiU launch game that they pulled from WiiU, made multiplat, and STILL can't deliver it to Switch in launch Window. And Just Dance. I mean even Squeenix was there day one with an RPG. Even EA has freaking FIFA. Ubi's hitting all new lows now.
Amiibo Festival 2. Calling it now.
As far as digital monopoly games go this actually does look good. So if you're into that sort of thing, it looks like a good time. But that's still just scraping the bottom. They're in Wii mode. And Ubi's output on Wii was some of the bottom of the barrel too.
My friends say that Monopoly is the single worst board game in existence, I have never gotten to play a game myself because they had come to that realizition way before I met them.
@H_Hunter PS4 also has Monopoly... -_-"
I will only get this if it's $29.99 or less, more than that is crazy for a board game you can buy for $19.99.
If it's priced right, this is actually brilliant. Great possibilities for other board games or even dice and CCG games for playing on the go - less set up and clean up time and not having to worry about space for physical cards and gameplay pieces makes this quite a tempting proof of concept for other companies to examine.
Believe it or not, I spent many hours playing Monopoly on Gameboy emulator once. The local clones of the board game (especially one called "Business" and unlicensed enough to gleefully fill the board with mammoths from Adidas to Mercedes to Disney to Shell) were a big part of my childhood even before video games entered it, and I was used to playing both with friends and against myself when alone, so the AI was a new challenge. Now I can own the latest and highly convenient video game incarnation legally! Count it on my wishlist for sure.
Monopoly makes perfect sense on the Switch. Why all the hate?
I have Monopoly Streets on the PS3 and it's a fun time to play with friends, but not as fun as the Zelda Monopoly Physical Set!
I love Monopoly and don't know of any other way to play online, so this might actually be worth looking into for me. That being said, it can't be a full retail priced game. Worth it for 30 dollars or less maybe.
Hoping some of that unlockable content is player pieces shaped like Nintendo items or characters. Themed boards would be nice as well.
Monopoly is super boring.
This looks alright, but what the Switch really needs is its own online "Clubhouse Games" so I can play Chess, Backgammon, Gin, Poker, Hearts, Mahjong, Hanafuda etc.
That little cart got the most play on my DS, and would be a wonderful thing to have downloaded onto the Switch, especially factoring in the portability component.
Maybe if it's a budget title. I won't pay more than $30 for it.
I love Monopoly so I'll be picking this up. They could do something cool here with Nintendo themed boards like you can get physically.
I'd buy this on 3ds, but never the switch. That switch is plagued with problems and I'll never buy it.
Meh, I'd rather just play the actual board game. Also the Switch laying flat like that and blocking the air intake vents bugs me. I suppose the game isn't all that demanding though.
I would rather eat yellow snow than own this, Risk would have been a better boardgames for switch
@Agent721 I wish they would make Nintendo edition boards available in the video games. There are so many of them now.
@Ryu_Niiyama
Agreed. Seems like a missed opportunity.
@AlexOlney yeah, instead now everyone needs to simply have 20/20 vision to see the micro 6" screen and the patience and focus of playing videogames in social settings.
@NEStalgia why? What do you mean why? Ubisoft that went all-in neck-deep with Wii U and got burnt. I don't blame them one bit, and this is coming from someone who bought almost every single Wii U game they put out. Nintendo and it's fickle fanbois don't deserve real 3rd party support ever again.
@gatorboi352
Guess you must be one happy camper then to see the Switch the little western 3rd party support it has??
Video game versions of board games are just boring, enjoy your sleeping aid people!
@sillygostly Actually, there have never been any Arabic-language games on Nintendo consoles, even if they are available in Arabic on other platforms. I was only pointing out the trailer because of the fact.
I heavily doubt Ubisoft can even technically include Arabic support for Nintendo consoles, even if they are now marketing Nintendo Switch games on their Middle Eastern YouTube channel.
I'm personally waiting for that day when Nintendo does include Arabic language support on their consoles. They already have a licenced distributor based in Dubai releasing localised consoles to local retailers, starting with the Wii, which include Arabic text on the packaging.
@westman98 not happy at all. But not surprised either.
@gatorboi352 I wouldn't say Ubi went all in neck deep. They DID offer good support early on in the WiiU but they also made almost as many critical errors as Nintendo. If they sent any more mixed signals they'd tie a pretzel. Going with ZombiU as a launch title was a good show of support, but also an odd choice. Survival horror is a niche genre, with a novel/experimental approach, but a Nintendo is the platform LEAST likely to appeal to fans of that genre. Even so, it sold reasonably well. Thus it was inexplicable that Ubisoft was highly disappointed in the sales, despite being a niche genre as a launch day title to a new console from a brand that's least associated with the genre.
Why? They were banking on it being Wii2 and assuming it would pick up where Wii left off ans the greatest fad to sweep the Earth. Maybe Nintendo personally assured them that was going to be the case. But that was still a heck of an illogical assumption to make. They had AC3 at launch as well. Genuine support, and good to see. Low sales, but iteration 3 on a console 1 and 2 and 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 weren't on should expect to have low sales, brand building. And they never complained about AC3 sales so I presume they got what they expected there.
But following ZombiU they choked on Rayman. Nintendo was selling their lineup window, drought and all, with that game positioned as an important one. Then Ubi choked, pulled the plug, delayed, then went multiplat. They were the exclusive in that Window. It wasn't a great window, but it was an important title at an important time. That, along with EAs seemingly intentional WiiU image bashing set the spiral in motion that grew.
Ubi didn't stop supporting it, they cake back with Black Flag and Watch Dogs (which went badly but they tried and they deserve credit for that) and even Splinter Cell, they tried. But they did so AFTER they made that Rayman mistake as a snap decision after the ZombiU bad planning, which had a big hand in sealing the console's fate.
So they did offer more support than any other western third party, but there's a reason Iwata did an Asks at Ubi HQ....sometimes those two companies are of similar idiotic mind, and Ubi contributed to the problem of WiiU by NOT going all in when it mattered, then trying to go back to going all in after they helped damage it.
So now we get to Switch and we get Just Dance, Monopoly, and the very same freaking Rayman they helped destroy the WiiU with. And they STILL can't get it there for launch. Seriously, are you sure they're not actually a Nintendo 2nd party? How can a company not named Nintendo get that so wrong?
NOW, to be fair to Ubisoft, they also have Steep coming, which, maybe not to the average gamer, but for Ubisoft, that's a full AAA title they're putting their weight behind, so it's not exactly BG&E or AC from our perspective, but it's genuine AAA support (when it's ready) from Ubi, so I'm being slightly hard on them. And they sent out the Switch polls to their Wildlands beta users, so they are trying to figure out where to support Switch. We don't know what their major games for holiday 2017 will be until they leak everything a week and a half before E3 So we don't know if they're going to through "normal" support this way or not yet.
I think Monopoly + the WiiU Rayman together just seems like a face slap. Heck, they should have just put Steep in that lineup instead of Monopoly. It's farther off, but would have felt like serious games support more than what they showed. that's the only Ubi holiday 2017 game we know about for any platform because it's from last E3.
Ya know, I wouldn't give this a second's thought on any other console, but on Switch it suddenly becomes appealing.
This extends beyond video games. This is for people who enjoy Monopoly. I for one grew up playing the game. The idea of playing with others anywhere on the spot is fairly appealing.
As long as it's $30-40 and not $60, I'm all in.
