We're honestly not sure what happened to Dr Kawashima's Devilish Brain Training: Can you stay focused? in Europe back in the day; it was all set to arrive in the region in 2013 but then that didn't happen for 'reasons'.
Japanese and North American gamers have had a while to work on their concentration skills, but the good news is it's back on the radar for a European release on 28th July on the 3DS. That news was dropped in a minor variation in the EU version of the Nintendo Direct broadcast, with a humorous line acknowledging the long wait in the region.
The third entry in a series that has sold more than 15 million copies in Europe to date (that DS boom was big time), this game seeks to train players' brains with a series of challenging concentration-based exercises.
Will you be picking this one up in the Summer or is your attention span already well honed?

What a Smart Devil you are!
Gonna guess that localisation costs must be low as the market for this on the 3DS i'm guessing is lower than during the DS Boom Years. If there was ever a Nintendo game to go Mobile in some form I thought it was this one. Probably gonna be eShop only too.
Oh well, guess they know something we don't.
Took the ages. At this point we Europeans should be receiving the game for free If the price tag is ~£5 I'll get it cause I've been looking forward to this game for quite some time, but I can't imagine coming back to my 3ds in July when we have Splatoon and other cool games already on Switch
I wonder if the doctor's look has changed because of accusations of pseudo-science and false-advertising by the neuroscience world
So wait, this is just the same game the rest of the world got years ago?
Must've had some serious hoops to jump through with the whole "Train Your Brain" thing. Lumosity says "hi."
huh...that reminds me that I need to get this in NA.
Wonder whether we'll get the corresponding StreetPass puzzle now.
He's really represented as a Red Oni, which is nothing like the Abrahamic devil, but I guess that's really difficult to localize. I'm surprised this game didn't have more controversy.
"Nintendo made a game where the devil tries to hone your mind to his will!? INTERNATIONAL OUTRAGE!!!111"
I'm just relieved that they're keeping "Devilish" in the title (it was indicated as much when the game was classified in Australia close to 5 years ago).
And I'm glad that it's finally coming, even this late into the 3DS's lifespan. I've never given up hope! Day 1 buy!~!~!~!~! This game was reaching Duke Nukem Forever levels of elusiveness (fortunately this won't be a dud).
It better come packaged with a soundtrack and a functionally useless Dr. Kawashima amiibo to make up for it!
I will miss the "tbd" next to its name in every European financial quarterly release. We need something to replace that!
I am assuming there was some kind of silly legal issue locking this one up.
@PlywoodStick that and Oni-ish doesn't really flow. Ogre-ish? Demon-ish? Wait that is worse. Cue "war on religion" and "think of the children!"...
NDS used to be had a lot of Educational games like Sudoku, Cross Words, Spot the Differences, Quiz, Foreign Language, Math, Cooking methods, Story Telling, Drawing, etc.
3DS has lesser games like that. Well, maybe not really wise to put too much "Toddler" games with price $20 - $40.
@gortsi we've got the non-committally named "Project Mekuru" for that role
@gaga64 true but like they said, this will be an e-shop only release, Dr. Kawashima is actually coming to retail!
Is this because, in this time, Kawashima worked with Microsoft on a game for Xbox and got into arguments with Nintendo? Just a thought...
I had no idea Europe never got this. I never played it... but hopefully it makes some people happy.
Finally! I thought it was going to be cancelled. Not sure if I'm picking it up at launch, but someday for sure
already imported a US copy ages ago lol
In 2006, there was a cool zeitgeist where the DS lite was all the rage, and people were playing the first Brain Training. The game was announced during Iwata's amazing GDC speech that year, and the attending press were even given free copies.
Sadly I don't think Nintendo can capture that magic anymore today, especially in the era of smartphones. Well maybe they can, but it depends on the Switch, and how they market it and whether they plan to bring casual/smartphone style games to the system.
day one for me, been waiting for years. I'll buy the shop version
Its too late now. My brain has already shrunk to the size of a pea.
Never got this in North America, would but Switch has taken over now..
@yuwarite The Switch is garbage. There's no hope of it becoming another DS.
@Mahe The Switch is not garbage, afterall it's selling very well, so objectively, as a business, Nintendo has succeeded in selling a product people want (unlike the Wii U).
As for it becoming another DS, no, I don't think it's possible. The older/casual/female crowd who were buying the DS for Touch! Generations games have moved on to smartphone gaming. We will see, though...
As a hardcore gaming machine, I have no doubt it will eclipse the 3DS in terms of quality software, just as the 3DS eclipsed the original DS for hardcore games. So for hardcore gamers, the Switch is going to be awesome, but for casual gamers... I don't know.
@neufel "I wonder if the doctor's look has changed because of accusations of pseudo-science and false-advertising by the neuroscience world"
As if there isn't a whole bunch of pseudoscience and false advertising in the neuroscience world/field already.
@LemonSlice
...
Touché.
@yuwarite
"as a business, Nintendo has succeeded in selling a product people want (unlike the Wii U)"
Isn't their job as a business to succeed in selling us a product that they first made us believe we want (something that didn't work in the WiiU's case)?
@Rei Sorry, you'll have to rephrase that; I have no idea what you're actually asking me.
Lol: I believe it when I see it!
@yuwarite The Switch isn't selling well. It has sold less than Wii, 3DS, Wii U and other systems in Japan in the same time.
In US, the abnormal NPD month for Switch obfuscates the release month sales figure, but it still sold at a slower rate than Nintendo's previous systems, not to mention other systems like PS4 which completely blew Switch out of the water and in only half of the time.
@Mahe "Famitsu released the first numbers, placing first week Nintendo Switch sales at 330,637 units. This places the console, using figures also from Famitsu as a term of comparison, behind the Wii (which sold 371,900 units in its debut week), slightly ahead of the PS4 (322,100), and quite nicely ahead of the Wii U (308,600)."
And currently the system is selling out everywhere in the west and hard to find in stock.
But aside from that, it's ridiculous to cast aspersions on a console's lifespan when it's only been out for a month.
The Switch won't be plagued by the same problems of the Wii U since at its heart it's basically a portable. Once the mainline Pokémon games, Animal Crossing and the cheaper Switch Mini comes out, I foresee it selling akin to that of the 3DS if not better.
@yuwarite Nice to use first week numbers when the system has been out 8 weeks. During those 8 weeks, it has fallen massively behind Wii and 3DS, and is even behind Wii U in Japan.
By this point, Wii had sold close to 1.3 million systems in Japan. Switch has sold about half of that. Launch-aligned 3DS numbers are also several hundred thousand ahead of Switch.
Also, stock is readily available in the stores that I frequent. You can just go in and pick one up.
"Portable" or not, Switch is doing badly.
@Mahe "Switch is doing badly." Okay, keep living in your delusional fantasy world, dude. Elsewhere, Switch is selling out; is hard to keep in stock right now, and is predicted to sell 7.2 million this year.
I can't continue a debate with someone so myopic to cast aspersions on a console's lifespan when the console has only been out for a short time.
Like I said, when games like Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey, etc, in addition to price drops, the supposed "Switch Mini", and various other variables, then we'll have a more objective picture on how well the Switch is doing.
What's the real reason you're nibelsnarfing about Nintendo (on a Nintendo website, no less) anyway? The lack of an Excite Bots Racing 2?
@yuwarite I still play and buy Nintendo games on my Nintendo 2DS regularly, you know!
But Switch is just garbage, the sales numbers are not good like some delusional fans would like you to believe, and the upcoming Switch release list looks really bad. I'm just telling it like it is.
@Mahe "The sales numbers are not good like some delusional fans would like you to believe"
Lol, what? Seriously, what planet are you living on? It's already sold 2.76 million units after 1 month. It's constantly selling out everywhere. For a brand new console that wasn't even launched during the holiday season, these are the very definition of "good" sales numbers.
The numbers are right in front of you, and you're still saying they're not "good"; I don't mean to insult you, but you are the one being delusional.
@yuwarite Those are not sold, those are shipped. Wii U shipped over 3 million in the same time, and is ahead of Switch in actual sales in Japan, launch-aligned. Probably Europe too.
Also, according to the latest Mario Kart 8 Switch news, Nintendo sold only 114,000 Switch systems in US between the end of March and Mario Kart 8's Switch launch. That's ridiculously low for a system that was launched a month ago.
@Mahe Yes, and those units are being sold to stores, which is how Nintendo makes money. And now those units are selling out within hours everywhere, so much so that Nintendo is going to drastic measures to meet demand.
Just give it up man, you're being delusional and overly pessimistic about the situation.
@yuwarite Did you see that figure? 114,000 systems in April before MK8? Those are not making much money for anyone.
Also, by your reasoning, Wii U made more money for Nintendo after launch. It shipped more consoles and it shipped a lot more of games!
@Mahe The Switch is predicted to sell as many units as the total Wii U sales (13 million) by this time next year: https://www.theverge.com/2017/4/27/15447342/nintendo-switch-sales-forecast-earnings-2016
And Mario Kart is selling faster than any previous entry in the series: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/05/mario_kart_8_deluxe_breaks_series_records_with_us_launch_sales
And now that MK8 is out, expect the system to continually sell even more units.
You are sorely grasping at old sales data, that was only low due to stock shortages. You are simply delusional and in time, you will see that.
