As many of you are probably aware, the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire has had its first one hour session, with five more to come over the weekend. Though some were suffering a handful of disconnects, in general all seemed to go rather well.
In any case, our resident Splatoon expert Alex took lots of lovely footage to showcase the new weapons and stages - he loves this series and is pretty darn good at it.
Did you join in with that first session or are you planning to jump in later this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

No, I didn't play and won't be for the foreseeable future but I hope everything went smoothly. Looks very similar, right down to the limited d pad pretext options and Judd. The levels look alright and that weapon seems very similar to the Splattershot which was my main in Splatoon, though I'd miss not having the shield as a special anymore.
Yeah it definitely felt like playing the next call of duty in terms of new gameplay feeling to the last iteration. But i dont see a reason yet to dislike it. Had fun.
Wasn't a huge fan of the game on Wii U, mainly because of bad team mates I was always stuck with. But I had a blast today, my teams were really good as were the opposing teams. Something about the game felt really nice and made me crave more.
I was able to jump in both testfires so far. The connection was flawless. Pro tip, I was able to join 5 minutes before the scheduled time and played a match beginning 5 minutes after the end time.
This was my experience of the first test between 19:00 & 20:00 GMT. (Below)
So I was buggered if I was staying up until 3am to try the second test and have the same happen! I'll try the one today at 11:00 and if it's the same result then I'm done wasting my time with it.
Is anyone on the GMT time zone trying to connect getting the following message:
Error Code: 2124-8006
An Error had occurred.
Please try again later.
Got the same message trying to connect to eShop.
Possibly Nintendo servers have crashed maybe??
update (19:35 GMT)
Now states in game 'Connecting to Internet' for numerous minutes until this error code is displayed:
Error Code: 2306-0502
An error has occurred
Please try again later.
Noting online to explain these error codes😩
Update (19:45 GMT)
Gave up trying!
Hope others had better luck.
I had a great time I had a good hour and also managed another game after the cut off point . I have never played it before so wanted to see the fuss about it . I loved the game but there were some issues. I had a couple of games where it crashes mid game and a coupe of times when the Internet connection just stopped and i was awaiting other players for Ages at one point . I still managed quite a few games and I had a blast ! 1 thing I didn't really like was I played in handheld mode and found the controls confusing looking up and down was weird I don't know if it's easier on docked mode but maybe I'll try that I only had a brief chance with being given the controls it would have been good to keep those in the game somewhere as I didn't really know what was going on for awhile
Well that was disappointing! Not the testfire or the video but the fact that I played Alex, inked his butt and didn't end up on the video. Bit of creative editing?
It's just more of the same. And that's not to say, that's bad but not really worth getting up at 3:30 AM for or play it at 8 PM when I'd usually start watching my daily movie. Still quite some fun, though.
Also the connection was kinda wonky. That never happens with Online Gaming for me. Only happened while searching for games luckily.
The fact that B is jump threw me a bit off in the first few matches, too. Played way too much Zelda so I am so used to pressing X to jump instead of B and opened up the map accidentally.
Looks fantastic, though expected nothing less
My only concern is that there seems to be more barriers preventing climbing up walls in squid form. Maybe that's just these levels. The rotation will probably annoy me again, as will drip feeding us content. Even with those annoyances it's still splatoon; the most fun third person shooter I've ever played. ☺
@lemonjellydude Personally, I'm not a fan of motion controls. If you're a bit like me you'll want to use standard controls. Go to the options menu by pressing '+' on the weapon select menu and turn off the motion controls!
The game plays much better this way.
Loved the motion controls of the first game but they just don't work well when playing the switch hand held. Tilting ruins view especially when making quick movements.
The map view set to X needs refinement. Should be slightly transparent so you can still see some of the action behind. I'd prefer that the map shows up only when X is held down - the moment you release/stop pressing down removes map view. That way you're not having to make an extra button command just to get back to the action.
Thanks for the video, @AlexOlney!
It was great to watch someone who's also a Splatoon freak/veteran playing the Global Testfire. It was especially insightful to see how often you inadvertently opened the map instead of jumping because of the neural pathways forged by those 400 hours of playing Splatoon. ^^ I'm pretty sure the same thing would happen to me and will need some time to get used to it.
It was also interesting because your playstyle seems to be not that different from mine (except for the Splatlings). I would've sucked with the Roller too.
Are the Splat Dualies comparable with the Aerospray? Which weapon from Splatoon 1 comes closest regarding their range?
Man, I would've loved to play the Global Testfire 2. Sadly, I can't afford a Switch right now (I really wish Splatoon 2 was a double release... 😡), so I'll probably have to wait until summer..
I tried the dualies, and was terrible.
I went to the standard blaster and was a little better.
I then swapped for the roller and OWNED everytime!
My team rarely lost!
