Super Bomberman R was something of a shock announcement for the Nintendo Switch as the popular character appeared to be on something of a hiatus in recent years. However, according to Media Create sales figures from Japan the Switch launch title marks the best opening sales the franchise has seen in almost two decades, with nearly 40,000 copies sold.
Admittedly, 1998's Bomberman World shifted almost twice that figure with 76,801 sales in its first week and Bomberman Land (2000) and Bomberman: Party Edition (1998) both came close with 32,595 and 34,945 copies respectively, but it's still an impressive haul and proves that the time was indeed right for the character to make his return.

Cool, now go and revive Bloody Roar Konami!
Wow.
Bomberman for smash?
Super Bomberman Rich!
I've held off on Bomberman R but good to see it selling well.
@BensonUii I'd kill for that
played it the day I got but have not played since. way to busy with I am setsuna and fast rmx . will go back it after I'm done Zelda. , witch is next on the hit list.
You'd wonder how Bomberman has survived so long with such poor sales. I'm not sure it's had good sales since the SNES. The first 2 games may have sold 1 million or thereabouts(in Japan alone the 2 SNES games sold over 1 million copies). Can't find definitive information for the rest of the world besides Japan. Don't get me wrong, I like Bomberman as much as the next person. Still, this is a cheaply made game with an overinflated price tag so it mightn't need high sales to turn a profit.
Bought it, but I have to finish Zelda Botw first!
If only it wasnt a cut down lite version of the Wii and 360 games with a weak tacked on "story" mode.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE By not being an overproduced budged behemoth. It certainly made its money by quantity though.
Easily made game on everything but toasters.
I give my thanks to the developers i didnt expect that this game was so much fun!
The best bomberman game. Nice job guys.
I haven't been to try this game yet along with Horizon dawn zero and Nier because Botw is that amazing. I hear good things about it. but some say the mp is wonky.
BTW why hasn't anybody wrote an article about cross dressing Link yet?
it does look fun but I wouldn't spend £50 on this
Love Bomberman but not at that price.By the time it gets reduced to a price I'm willing to pay the online modes will be dead and I'll have too many other games to care about it.Shame really as if it was a £20 Eshop download,it would be a day one and the online modes would be much more populated.I've also read the set up for finding matches is pretty awful. Was terrible on Wii too.You had to wait 2 or 3 minutes till every player pushed start and there was always the one who wouldn't and then left the lobby before match started. No time to put up with nonsense like that when there are plenty other games to play that I can jump right into.
Now revive Legend of the Mystic Ninga.
The multiplayer is still fun but compared to the Snes games it's pretty rubbish and the lack of a dpad doesn't help the controls. Oh and the online mp barely works
Glad to have the bomber back!
I was glad to see this series back in the lineup. It might cost more than I like for a really no-frills game, but it is still one of the great party games. The kids approve.
If you don't have kids or a bunch of friends who will join you for local multiplayer, I might recommend waiting for a price drop or a used copy. It's not exactly a game for the hardcore gamer community.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Those numbers are week 1 sales, not the total sales!
@Jeronan that's till very, very low sales, especially considering games typically sell the most in first week. Most of those games didn't even sell more than 5,000 units...
Custom Battler Bomberman NDS is my favorite.
Hopefully there will be a lot of different genre Bomberman franchise.
Cooking with Bomberman, Bomberman Kart HDX, Bomberman Universe, Bomberman Wars R, DJ Bomberman, etc.
As long not Hentai Bomberman. >_<
I still play my SNES super bomberman with 4 player tap
@Jeronan I'm well aware of that. But the first week is usually the peak and then they rapidly tail off. So most of those games would be lucky to reach 50,000 in sales.
@AlphaJaguar yes and yes...and legacy support for fightsticks would be a godsend to keep from having to drop the cash on the hori stick coming out, although don't see it possible bc wii/wii u sticks aren't usb
I really want this game, but I can't justify paying $50 for it. It'll come down in price at some point. I can wait.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Not only are they week 1 figures, but those are only the Japanese numbers. I'm sure all the western sales boost the totals to more sustainable numbers.
@thesilverbrick Again, I know that. Right, Super Bomberman on SNES sold 500,000 units in Japan and Super Bomberman 2 sold 700,000 units in Japan. Has anything since come close to those numbers?
Long as Konami keeps making games and not those bloody Pachinko machines I'm happy.
I didn't got this one because I didn't like the look or the price. Ended up getting 1-2 Switch
That's pretty cool. I love the game but I stink at it. I can't get through World 2 on beginner mode
I got to the boss twice, but...I have no idea how you're supposed to beat bosses in this game, I can't hit him worth anything. I've cheesed the first boss twice though
I've never played bomberman, but it looks like fun on Mp. Not sure there is enough there in single player for me . Still good to see that the fans got what they wanted
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
That's what I was thinking. Big sales? "wow cool!" then I read the article... "40k? ouch". Depending how it compares to # of Switches sold.
I have fun with bomberman, not diehard. But to me that screams "pass. I already have this game." If anything it made me think i should just go buy it for SNES again
that said, i love the idea of revivals and for fans i'm sure they're pumped whether it is dynamic and new or not, but I bet they'd be MORE pumped for something bigger, better with more features! (or a lower price?) lol
@eltomo Amen to that. BOMBERMAN FOR SMASH!
Also, where are the sales for the SNES (and earlier) games people are citing for the older Bomberman games? Would be interesting to look at.
Konami should bring Metal Gear Solid Legacy to the Switch as well as mgs5.
I'm going to be completely honest here... I didn't even know that there were any Bomberman games between Now and the N64.
The Bomerman entries on the DS were fun! Those two-screen multiplayer levels! I preferred Bomberman Generations on the Cube for the Multiplayer though (those coin and reversi battles were sooooo much fun), but the current entry doesn't come close to Bomberman 94 / Mega Bomberman. Single player is a little shallow and multiplayer needs fleshing out. Hopefully there will be a sequel that will vastly improve on the formula. I'd say those who are yet to get it, wait for a budget release ^_^
I haven't played a bomberman game in years so I am very happy with the new entry.
Can be a very fun game with others. The cost of unlockables and some boss though are ridiculous.
I'm tempted, but I'm too much into Zelda. When the physical goes on sale, I will dip.
Glad to see it succeed. I've had a good experience playing it so far.
I'm really enjoying bomberman r. I've said many times, that I wish Switches third party support would focus on retro title sequels from the nes to Wii U. I wouldn't mind if third parties delivered 8-32 bit sequels or like bomberman revitalize those franchise keeping original gameplay while adding modern graphics. The price is high but the gameplay is worthwhile. There's actually more content than destiny and we all paid 60 bucks for Upon release. Even though destiny and bomberman are very different games both essentially have you completing the same objectives repetitively. In destiny your constantly shooting the same enemies on the same maps mindlessly, whereas bomberman your constantly running through puzzles dropping bombs. My point is that bomberman is a great addition to the series and I've paid more for triple a titles with less content in the past. Bomberman s definitely worth More than 1-2 switch. I also have a suspicion that if bomberman sells well, a 2d castlevania may become a reality.
I love this game. This and Saturn bomberman are at the top of the list for the series, in my opinion.
Although those voices are pretty tough to handle... lol
I wonder if BEMANI musicians have a chance to get involved into another Bomberman or Konami games on Switch. Would like to hear music by Sota Fujimori / Yuichi Asami/ Yasuhiro Taguchi / Takayuki Ishikawa, etc. Bomberman with Futuristic outfits like Custom Battler Bomberman + 3D Dynamic camera angle + Futuristic tunes by Sota Fujimori = OMG...!
The game is good, I enjoy playing it. Konami deserve this success.
With Breath of Wild being the only launch title worth buying, it is no wonder Bomberman did good in sales since it was second best lauch game, and considering launch games for Switch, that is not saying much. People crave for some good games for their new console, so much they will settle for a Bomberman game that plays more or less the same as previous Bomberman games. That doesn't mean it is a bad game, but it means that if Switch had a better launch line-up, I highly doubt Bomberman would sell as well.
I haven't bought it and I never will, Konami don't deserve my money anymore.
I say support Bomberman R, this will show Konami that there is a demand for making quality video games for home consuls.
What has sales figures got to do with the enjoyment a person gets from a game?
