As it stands, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is already an excellent game, but we knew from the start that this is only the beginning. Due to an incredibly successful Kickstarter run, there's plenty of extra content coming via DLC, some free and some paid depending on whether or not you were an original backer. Though the meat of this DLC is still in the works right now, the first bit of new content has now arrived in the form of Hard Core Mode, a tough-as-nails difficulty that should challenge even the most seasoned of gamers.
Version 1.01 brings with it many bug fixes alongside the aforementioned difficulty setting, and it just went live for all platforms in all regions around the world. Except for North America, that is. Matt Bozon just tweeted today that the update has been delayed in that region until Thursday, though no reason was given. Still, at least it's only a couple more days.
What do you think? Will Hard Core Mode tempt you into replaying this? Were you an original backer? Drop us a comment in the section below.

Any word of hope for an upcoming Switch version?
What's a Wii U?
Oh snap Wii U support!
Really though, Shantae is great. Not sure I'm hardcore enough for this mode, though.
I love Shantae, so I welcome a Hard Core mode with open arms.
I would also welcome a Switch version of Half-Genie Hero for on the go.
Tough as nails huh? Considering how easy the game is i wouldn't hold my breath.
Hype, I can't wait to play hardcore
Bring this to the Switch!
Seriously, I'd rebuy Shantae and the Pirate's Curse for Switch in a heartbeat and I've been waiting for 1/2 Genie Hero to get announced for Switch to play it. Make it happen before the year ends!
7 comments and 4 of them about the Switch.
The Switch is wonderful, but give the Wii U a few dying breaths (of the wild).
Awesome, this is perhaps the last great game I'll play for WiiU besides things I already owned. Shame it's not for Switch, but as I already have my Kickstarted WiiU copy, I can't complain too much, it's such a great game in the already-great Shantae series.
Would be nice if other developers continued to support existing gamers on WiiU, like say, releasing the remaining Star Wars Pinball tables we've been promised...
@BoFiS
And the added characters for Pokken Tournament, who are already in the data.
I never got this yet so a switch version would be loved.
Marvellous. I got ******* out of the good ending because of the point of no return at the end of the game, so it's the perfect chance to replay it.
Bug fixes are also welcome, I suffered quite a few of those. Getting stuck inside walls after suffering an attack shouldn't happen in a game this good.
Cool! Now all we need is Nintendo, & Wayforward to put this hero in the next Smash. Not just half of her, all of her. Sidenote: There's already some cool fan(-created) Smash remixes on Youtube for Shantae.
Good thing there's an update, if there's apparently game-breaking bugs; I didn't say there were, I said if. I don't actually own the game, yet, so I wouldn't know firsthand.
I just don't like the trend of everything is now a kickstarter; if it's a bankable idea, the customers need not financially back anything, as they will buy the finalized product, anyway. Oh well, sometimes it's a good thing...
Not sure if I would want to replay this one... The pirates curse was insanely good but this one seemed far too easy to 100% and replaying the levels was tedious. Hardest part was after the final boss battle. Almost turned it off.
Ah, so that's what that update I had on PS4 was. I'll try out this hardcore mode.
Half-Genie Hero was quite enjoyable, but personally, I found it difficult enough. I'm not actually saying I found it hard; just that I don't mind if a game is on the easy side.
I backed the game originally. Managed to get all but two achievements on Steam. I'll have to do a couple more playthroughs - one for speed running and the other to tackle this difficulty.
@MarcelRguez there is no point of no return in Shantae HGH. You can whistle out of a stage almost at anytime. Plus, after you beat the game, can continue your current save file to get anything you missed.
@hcfwesker Mild spoilers of Half-Genie Hero below:
You're going to have to tell me how exactly. I (or the game, can't really remember) saved right before the fight with Risky. As far as I know, I can't go to the previous screen, can't use Warp Dance and the "Exit" menu option just throws me back to the title screen. I also have the four items needed for the good ending, I just didn't show them to Uncle Mimic.
I know I'm not the only one with this problem, for what that's worth.
@JHDK em.. It's an add on for the wii right XD
@MarcelRguez in your pause menu there is a whistle, top left of inventory. Use it and it will bring you back to the overworld map screen. The whistle is the first item you get in the game when first talking to Sky
@hcfwesker Can't believe I didn't notice that. I did think at one point that the absence of a "drop out of the stage" option in the menu was a weird oversight.
Thanks a bunch, mate.
The update came in Europe also two weeks ago by the way. Works great. WayForward is always a quality dev, unlike Inti Creates or Nicalis.
