The Nintendo Switch launches today alongside its very own eShop, and there are already quite a few digital delights for you to sink your teeth into.
The issue here of course is storage space; with only around 25GB of the Switch's 32GB of memory available to the end user, space is at a premium from day one - unless you've been wise enough to consult our Micro SD card guide, of course.
With that in mind, you may want to plan your purchases wisely to ensure you don't end up struggling for space. Below are the file sizes for every eShop title available at the moment in the west.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 13GB
Super Bomberman R - 2.1GB
1-2 Switch - 1.3GB
The King of Fighters '98 - 180MB
Waku Waku 7 - 117MB
Shock Troopers - 115MB
World Heroes Perfect - 122MB
Metal Slug 3 - 161MB
Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment - 147MB
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove - 148MB
New Frontier Days: Founding Pioneers - 848MB
Othello - 11MB
VOEZ - 620MB
Vroom in the Night Sky - 810MB
Just Dance 2017 - 12.5GB
FAST RMX - 838MB
Snipperclips - Cut It Out, Together - 949MB
I am Setsuna - 1.3 GB
Which titles will you go for, given these file sizes? Let us know with a comment below.

Where are the Virtual Console games?
Hmm interesting. Not too bad since i plan physical for most of the big name games.
Was a little surprised by the file size of Just Dance 2017 until it occurred to me that a single layer (25GB) Blu-ray can store a little under 2 ½ hours of content at a decent bitrate (though certainly not reference quality, which would necessitate around double the bitrate).
I'm actually really impressed now knowing that Ubisoft have managed to squeeze in some 3 hours of fantastic quality (A/V-wise, certainly not artistically =P) video in less than the space of a single Blu-ray disc. I'm not an audiophile, so I can't make a judgement on the sound quality.
@Frank-The-Tank I wonder if Nintendo have abandoned the idea of the VC in favour of classic mini systems.
Why port GC software when you could tart it up. 1080p60 F-Zero GX?
I'm going physical but I'm covered I got an 128gb microSD.
@Frank-The-Tank Did you miss the 6 on that list?
If only there was even just one good game... sigh. I've never seen Nintendo create any new game system, or launch titles as disappointing as this in all my life.
I downloaded the Shovel Knight Treasure Trove, Snipperclips, and I Am Setsuna. The rest of my lot are physical copies.
So you can run out of space on your Switch within an hour. And you can fill it with just 2 games. Classic!
If Dragon Quest Heroes 1&2 ever release here you can't load that on the Switch itself.
@RadioHedgeFund They won't port Cube games because they don't have analog triggers.
@RadioHedgeFund They confirmed we're getting NES and SNES with online multiplayer through the subscription. And since they'll want to make their money back from porting and adding features to those games, they won't just be rental that's for sure.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Going physical games is your solving problem.
@RadioHedgeFund
I think Gamecube VC is a wonderful idea.
Imagine Paper Mario The Thousand Years Door, Harvest Moon Magical Melody, Super Mario Sunshine, The Sims Bustin' Out, etc on the go inside Nintendo Switch with 1080p.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I've run out of space on my 500GB PS4 in less than two months of owning the system. I can't just stick a microSD card inside that though.
"Which titles will you go for, given these file sizes?"
I don't choose games based on their file sizes.
This is why I plan on getting higher capacity memory cards for when I actually get the Switch.
Still awaiting words on if we're going to have a South American release...
I'm surprised a game as big as Breath of the Wild is only 13GB. Makes me question why a lot of modern games have such inflated file sizes.
For ya'll still looking for a Switch, I suggest going to Wal-mart or target to get one. I literally just walked in and asked for one then I was able to get it.
I just had a revelation. I live in the sticks. No proper internet. Downloading games has never been an option. But then it hit me. This thing is portable. I can just carry it to a friends house or a restaurant and download it. Playing portable is great but this opens a new world to me.
Yep. Aside from maybe the most-played ones such as Super Mario Odyssey, Sm4sh Switch/Sma5h and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I'll definitely go physical this time around.
THE WEBSITE CHANGED
@TheWhiteFalcon
Thats because Sony (and microsoft) don't optimize the games.
Nintendo is king in that regard!
That's why I'm really curious as to the file size for Skyrim!
Interesting. But I'm still on the fence.
Im going all digital for the switch , the g.f has already requested I buy just dance but at that size I'll probably go physical
@Damo Anybody there try out Skylanders yet or you leaving that up to Andy Robertson? I'm just curious if all the of Skylander data is saved to the game cartridge or the memory as the game is set up to maintain all the info internally, it sounds like it literally turns the toys into DLC once you scan them once it seems. I know each toy would be a small amount but we have over 100 Skylanders, it could add up.
And if Switch ever gets Lego Dimensions, well we own that on disc on Wii U and it has over 8GB of download updates for season 2, they just keep downloading in the background every time a new "story pack" is released. Could add up, or it could be on cartridge. You know of anything yet - saves, DLC, updates - storing on a cart or are they read only? You always know things.
Wow, the Waku Waku 7 on my Japanese Wii is around 14.8 MB
@TheWhiteFalcon Exactly my PS4 is half full already and I don't own ANY digital games...
@AlienX for two reasons 1) resolution, 2) compression, and I believe all Wii shop games had to be under 45MB or around there. I expect (hope) Waku Waku 7 to look and sound better on the Switch.
Also if you buy Disgaea 5 from the Japanese eshop, it has an option to set the game in english.
@CheezIt Good thing there's 4 or 5 good games, ey?
@Xaessya Wait seriously? I'm going to have to look into that when I get a switch
Weren't the Tomorrow Corporation games supposed to be available at launch as well?
As someone who watches download sizes carefully, I always really really appreciate you guys listing the sizes, and always look forward to you printing them! Thanks!
@Xaessya Ohh, boy, that's tempting! Have physical on preorder, but would love to have a jump on it, too....
@NEStalgia
I was surprised by it too.
Hmm, the physical copy of I am Setsuna from Amazon Japan is only $5 more than the digital download with shipping. I wonder if it has an English option.
Getting my Switch in the mail March 6th, can anybody tell me how the Neo Geo games run? And are they on the American eShop?
Just got my switch hooked up way smaller than I anticipated. I like it. No VC games in the shop for me. BUMMER! Got Zelda so i'm sure i'll be ok for awhile haven't put that in yet still getting this new ID set up which I think i've done. Wanted me some Metal slug action! The screen looks great I was worried my eyes are getting worse with age, but seems ok as I set everything up in table top mode which is something I didn't think I would ever use. I can see using this way more than I thought.
@Metal_Slugger
Interesting. I think there was an article earlier on how to get Japanese games. Let's dig it up. I'm a big SNK fan myself, and Metal Slug, Shock Troopers, or KOF while sharing a Joycon sounds fantastic.
@VR32F1END Yeah that Shock Troopers looks like it would be super fun. Watching trailers in table top mode that Shovel Knight: Spector of Torment looked great on the Switch screen. I think I liked it better than on the big screen.
Downloading Zelda day one update now.
Also the WiiU comparison to the Switch now that I see them in my living space is like comparing an early 2000 computer with bulky peripherals to an apple mac mini wireless setup. I love my WiiU but I really think it's time to retire it. Wish I had another setup for older consoles. Someday maybe I will get my crap together and do that. Clean up some space in another room for that.
Also got it! Japanese Shock Troopers downloading now.

I won't get the Switch until 2018, so I have a lot of time to decide haha, but I plan on buying all games physical. Should I make an exception for 1-2-Switch?
Just playing my retail version of Zelda Breath of the Wild today. was going to get I am Setsuna but I still refuse to pay retail price for digital downloads. Drop about 15 to 20 bucks off and I might consider it. probably will pass on I am Setsuna now
wow fast is under 1gb
No binding of isaac on launch day. Im certain it was a launch game?
I bought fast rmx first and downloaded the snipperclips demo . i will probably get i am a satsuma next as it looks great
I'm going physical for the most part, except for Shovel Knight and possibly Fast RMX.
These reports act like people don't know how to but memory cards for Christ's sake! These file sizes are small and if you have ALREADY purchased or own a decent sized memory card, this is a non-issue. Maybe I'm the only one with a 128 gb memory card lying around. A couple 64 and 32 gigs just laying around from old phones and tablets that I can reformat.
@alexandrecn1985 me too. With these file sizes so far, I'm set for awhile.
@Xaessya awesome. Didn't know that.
@DWWM textures, anti-aliasing, and all that extra stuff they throw in on these newer games. Nintendo's art design is what keeps their files low which in itself is awesome.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE not if you have a MEMORY card which in this case is like have a portable HDD on your PS4 or XBOX One when those 500 gigs ran out. PS4 finally added the ability to use portable hdd's just recently after all this time. Wasn't able to fill them up in a day off of 2 games but there is finite space.
@Frank-The-Tank On the VC.
Snipperclips is bigger than FAST RMX?! How is that even possible?!
The people at Shin'en must be compression wizards just like Nintendo
I can't seem to work out how to put download games onto the memory card....
Does anyone how to or it only gives the option once the Switch memory is full?
Do you know what the file size would be for Street Fighter?
