There's little doubt that The Pokémon Company has been making a big play on the nostalgia of older gamers this year. While Pokémon Sun and Moon will still be marketed to young players, there has been messaging to tempt lapsed trainers back to the series.
In any case, The Pokémon Company will be hard pushed to produce something as effective as this unofficial Pokémon: Evolutions trailer. Independently produced by John Wikstrom and a team of people, it's a high quality and emotive video - if you grew up in the '90s this will very likely ensure there's 'something in your eye', whether you're a big Pokémon fan or not.

Thats exactly how my childhood was, great ad to bring lapsed players back.
Ok, I wasn't a Pokemon Fan when I was a kid and got into the series as an adult, and yet the ad still strucked me and made me tear up...
I don't think I'm evolving so much as decaying at this point.
I came to the series as an adult, just as Silver came out. Pokemon kept me going through some of the worst and most difficult times of my life. And there have been more than enough of those. Silver and Pearl in particular gave me a reason to get up in the morning some days. I kind of wish I had the childhood memories of it as so many here do, but I was 26 when the first games came out, so far too old for that. What I do have though are the memories of my son's childhood - he was about 3 when I got Silver, and 6 when I got him his first GBC and a second-hand copy of Yellow. He played that thing to death, and it was something great that we shared. And now my daughter, who was 6 when she got her 2DS and Omega Ruby, wants Moon for Christmas. I will get Sun, and we will play together and trade just like I did with her big brother. So yeah, the ad did make me tear up, just a little.
I have been a fan since red/blue/yellow and I am really looking forward to pokemon moon! Makes me tear up thinking about me and my sister training, trading, and catching pokemon for the first time! In the late 90's these games got me through rough times In my childhood. Pokemon fan for life!!! Lol
Now I miss my GBC. Nice vid.
That was lovely. Nostalgic.
Wish i didn't sell my pokemon cards during my teen years where I "outgrew it". Yeah right I did... Dumb idiot kid.
Wow, the power of childhood and nostalgic are really beautiful...
Pretty much my experience as Pokemon fan since R/B/Y
Lovely promotional thing. It's quietly nostalgic without being pandering.
Nintendo, hire this man for your advertisement department now
@Ed_Fairway
And also the boy who roled as his child version.
@Anti-Matter It could jumpstart a career for them
Just because Pokemon is enjoyed by children and has a cartoony look doesn't mean its not a game that can't also be enjoyed by adults I'm 30 years old and I've actually enjoyed the latest Pokemon games!
Everybody from my generation I'm a nutshell
Wow, very well done. I love the small touch of the Ken Griffey Jr, Nintendo Power cover....that definitely hit a spot.
Also, seeing the cover of the card binder with the drawings, I had to do a double take to make sure that it wasn't mine!
@HawkeyeWii
Now, now, there's no need for that. Everybody's different and I'm sure you are lovely. 🤗
They should have used the original Gameboy instead of the Gameboy Color. That would have really hit home. That dude isn't a true Pokemon fan if he's discovering Pokemon Sun and Moon from a shop display. True fans would have watched the live reveal Direct, visit Serebii.net every day, and have daily discussions about Pokemon on message boards.
Love it!
Although, I’m not sure we all “evolved” into something better by turning into a bunch of corporate henchmen, mindless consumers, “social” media sheep, and glorified slaves to this broken system. Most of the time I wish I could de-evolve back into a pure and innocent child again. 😮
Well, at least video games keep the fantastic, wonderful, glorious, amazing, imaginative, creative, adventurous, heroic little child in me alive. 😀
PS. I genuinely thought this was official before reading the article.
Silly commercial... you grew up and aged... that's not evolving. Psh.
As an early 90s baby, Pokemon was pretty much my childhood & that video was just beautiful, summed up those feels and memories in a nutshell; rocking a gb/c, collecting the cards, playing & trading with friends, late nights etc
Sun / Moon really are looking to be something special - don't think I've seen this level of hype & excitement since the first generation.
Darn those onion cutting ninjas! If they had swapped the advert with the sister that would have been me exactly. I still have my gbc with red and gold. I um...need to do something about these tears that magically keep appearing....brb.
Edit: That blink transition was so depressing though. I swear sometimes I feel like I've been alive for SOOOO long and other times I am like "Wasn't I 10 yesterday?".
@abbyhitter It isn't about "true" fans (nice "no true scotsman" though). It is about the person that may have enjoyed playing as a kid but moved away from pokemon and maybe gaming as an adult but felt that "magic" again after seeing an advert/demo. Not everyone is a lifelong gamer. Even those that are, some may have stopped playing pokemon for a significant period of time and are excited/intrigued by the new one.
Wow, this was well done! So many feels in this one. 0:13-0:24 really resonates with me; before the advent of backlit screens, I would play games on my GBC by night-light (my room was in a loft, so I couldn't very well use the lights).
I may just break out the old GBC (still working!) this weekend if I find the time.
So the point is its not the same anymore?
Nostalgia is for posers
It's very touching to me.
After seeing this and the NS video, I wonder if Nintendo will start going for more Apple like advertisements from here on. The actor in this video looks like a black Jeremy Renner.
For as venerable a series as it is, Pokemon has absolutely decimated popular scientific literacy of the theory of evolution.
Pokemon don't evolve. People don't evolve. Animals don't evolve. They mature. Grow up, if you will. Species evolve, but individual creatures by definition do not.
The irony in my rant, though, is that by looking at the Pokemon series as a whole, highlighting how antiquated entries have been replaced by modern, more fit ones, this trailer actually gets evolution right... and then immediately wrecks it again by conflating it with the maturation of the players.
Argh.
@Zach777 Silly logo you have...that stupid anime is coming out. That's not evolving. Psh.
@GreenX1
Silly reply you make... that's not a logo; that's called a profile picture. That's not evolving either... pshhhhh.
Nice!
I love this.
