The Japanese games market is pleasingly different to the West, with its own trends and patterns alongside some unique releases. We get a look at this courtesy of the weekly Media Create results, though the updated data shows that old favourites continue to lead as last week's new arrivals struggle.
Starting off with software, the Yo-kai Watch / Romance of the Three Kingdoms cross-over continues to lead on 3DS, with Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 in second place. In truth sales go off a cliff after those two, all coming in below 10,000 units each; the results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [3DS] Yo-kai Sangokushi (Level-5, 04/02/16) – 41,768 (401,481)
- [3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 (Square Enix, 03/24/16) – 24,489 (541,635)
- [PS4] Dark Souls III (Bandai Namco, 03/24/16) – 8,833 (267,654)
- [PS4] Far Cry Primal (Ubisoft, 04/07/16) – 8,805 (34,107)
- [3DS] Disney Art Academy (Nintendo, 04/07/16) – 8,453 (26,170)
- [Wii U] Splatoon (Nintendo, 05/28/15) – 6,717 (1,332,219)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SCE, 03/19/15) – 6,451 (737,304)
- [PS4] Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition (Spike Chunsoft, 04/14/16) – 6,179 (New)
- [Wii U] Super Mario Maker (Nintendo, 09/10/15) – 5,973 (846,096)
- [3DS] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo, 02/18/16) – 4,388 (140,536)
- [Wii U] Pokken Tournament (Pokemon, 03/18/16) – 4,348 (124,715)
- [PSV] Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X (Sega, 03/24/16) – 3,797 (87,931)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Happy Price Selection) (Nintendo, 03/17/16) – 3,603 (31,095)
- [PS4] Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness (Square Enix, 03/31/16) – 3,495 (126,903)
- [3DS] Assassination Classroom: Assassin Training Plan (Bandai Namco, 03/24/16) – 3,261 (38,113)
- [PS4] Republique (GungHo Online Entertainment, 04/14/16) – 3,156 (New)
- [PS4] Skullgirls 2nd Encore (Arc System Works, 04/14/16) – 2,678 (New)
- [PS4] The Division (Ubisoft, 03/10/16) – 2,333 (125,615)
- [PS4] Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence Sengoku Risshiden (Koei Tecmo, 03/24/16) – 2,206 (30,538)
- [3DS] Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire (Pokemon, 11/21/14) – 2,151 (2,789,955)
Moving on to hardware, all but one system shows a drop in sales this week. Bucking the downward trend is Wii U, which climbed to a little over 6000 units - that's still a poor number, but positive momentum is always a positive thing. The 3DS family of systems, led by the LL (XL), are still just behind PS4 in second place.
- PlayStation 4 – 20,257 (23,889)
- New 3DS LL – 14,573 (18,042)
- PlayStation Vita – 12,337 (13,278)
- Wii U – 6,091 (4,963)
- New 3DS – 3,677 (4,420)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,220 (1,296)
- 3DS – 1,211 (1,411)
- 3DS LL – 196 (242)
- Xbox One – 142 (212)
An unremarkable set of results overall, and it'll be interesting to see how Star Fox Zero performs for the Wii U when the figures come out next week.

Wow, Splatoon in 6th place. But then again it's only 6500 sales, lol.
@manu0 Splatoon is almost a whole 1 year old!
IT'S STILL STAYING FRESH!!!!
Ah, the dog days of April, waiting on E3.
Is SFZ getting a Wii U bundle in Jspan? I know Pokken did. Has Japan Wii U stock improved?
Well at least we know we'll get something next week with the financials even if it isn't a full blown NX reveal, they have to give forward guidance for 2016-17 I would think.
With game sales across the board very low, I'd be SO suprised if SFZ didn't take number one. I reckon it will probably sell about 60k?
It's impressive that Splatoon is still doing so well.
@Mogster sorry to say it won't. I'll be amazed it it does 15k tbh
With Yokoi-Watch showing up high, I am a bit worried of how Pokemon can beat the sales of Watch.......
Also, some nerve of Sony to make Vita like a big thing in Japan while not giving a damn about it in the west.
@Socar that's because the vita never sold well in the west. It's been out a year and a half longer than the wiiu (a total sales failure) and is only a few million ahead of it.
@faint Still, Sony like ignores it and that is cheap. You have to support your products throughout and that is something Sony ought to do for Vita.
No number for the 2DS sales? I thought the console had finally reached Japan.
@Rei I've been wondering about how well the 2DS has performed in Japan since it was released 2 months ago. Why Media Create hasn't tracked its sales remains a mystery to me.
From what I can tell they lumped them in with the og numbers
@faint Too bad, I was really interested.
